Commonwealth in this context means the Australian federal government (because the official name of Australia is "the Commonwealth of Australia"). So, a commonwealth car is just a (federal) government car.

And one woman (who shall remain nameless) had her car drive her dog around whilst she took a helicopter to a meeting that would have been quicker to drive too.

Australians wept when we lost John in 2017. His 'interviews' with Bryan were a TV highlight each week, for many years. Their timing was just sublime!

Had the pleasure of working with John Clarke on a movie a few years back, absolute gentleman. Was a big fan of his since the Fred Dagg days and was thrilled to be working on the same movie as he was, very sad loss when he passed not long after. Cheers to our Kiwi neighbours for the talent they have produced over the years. Gotta go now, the separator has broken and the Trevs got the tractor stuck in the river again.

It’s just dry Aussie humour. I really don’t think this guy got it.
John Clarke, a New Zealand genius. Aussies are very fortunate he jumped across the ditch to find some peace and quiet.
Here he is paired with Bryam Dawes, a veteran comedian, actor and writer himself (and for a period of time the Head of Comedy for ABC Radio (the national broadcaster, kind of like PBS)) playing the straight man, although they played both of these roles pretty straight.
Watching John Clarke do impersonations is itself an entertaining pasttime, he doesn't change his voice or pull faces but you notice he adopts verbal tics and cadences, employs subtle hand movements and sitting positions. All very low key but spot on.
He's not saying your honour, but Jana (Wendt) is an Australian 90's Gold Logie award-winning television journalist. Nicknamed the 'perfumed steamroller', indicative of her interviewing style.
If he reads this he wont know what a Gold Logie is !

John Clarke was not an Aussie. He was a Kiwi. Born & bred in Wellington NZ. His first well known comedy act was as "Fred Dagg". He made a movie called "Dagg Day Afternoon" in the early 1970s. Fred Dagg and his seven sons, all named Trevor... just saying 😊
He was from Palmerston North, not Wellington.

A Commonwealth Car is a carpool run by the australian federal government for the politicians to use as part of their 'official duties'. Some have drivers or some are just a car for use when they are at home and not in Canberra. States can also have similar carpools.
Australian humour is very subtle, sarcastic and nuanced. We also don;t hold our leaders in high esteem, they are mere public servants who are ridiculed and made fun of. Australian humour is very dry, sarcastic and ironic.

the great thing about these skits by john clarke and bryan dawe is that john c never acted like anyone other than himself, but it was always really obvious who he was playing. such a clever duo. miss john clarke.

John Clarke and Bryan Dawe did these interviews at the end of a current affairs show on a Thursday night. John would often portray an actual politician or public servant. What made him unique was that he never attempted to impersonate the person he was representing so as to not to distract from what he was saying.
They also did a series in the lead up to the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games. They portrayed a logistics organisation dealing with infrastructure builds and so on. It was done as a straight faced mockumentary. Loom for "The Games".
Yes I have that, and it was so reaIstic it confused the heck out of the French journalists covering the leadup to the Sydney Games. They didn't realise is was satire.
Never mind by the time Fatso the fat arse wombat came along with Roy and HGs show after the days events they started to catch on to the humour.
John Clarke is a New Zealander who started his comedy career here with a character on TV named Fred Dagg, a spoof on extreme perceptions at the time of the Kiwi farmer, all taken to ridiculously funny extremes in which his dry delivery fetured. He later moved to Oz to grow his career with outstanding results.
For those not familiar let me try to explain --
John Clarke was a New Zealand comedian who moved to Australia because there was great opportunity in Australia. (It was kinda common for this to happen).
He started his career in his native country with a character called Fred Dag (a sheep farmer) who would explain current events in a kind 'straightforward' style. Pointing out the absolutely insanity of the spin that politicians and bureaucrats use to cover up their inability to do even the simplest actions.
Clarke was a voracious reader of official and news sources, looking for the clear spin that they use to cover-up abject failures.
He later teamed up with Brian Dawe (who acted as a kind of 'straight man') to create Clarke and Dawe, where they satirised current events, not by trying to impersonate public figures, but rather by skewering the absurdity of these official's attempts to avoid blame for their failures by weaselling out of mistakes that they were clearly responsible for.
On 21st July 1991 Greek tanker Kirki lost its bow off the coast of Western Australia, resulting in a major pollution incident.
During the incident and the subsequent tow to a safe haven, the ship lost approximately 17,280 tonnes of light crude.
The combination of severe weather conditions and the effects of the Leeuwin Current helped avoid serious pollution of the West Australian coast as they dispersed 7900 tonnes of oil lost during the initial stages of the spill.
Yeah, they managed to tow it up to around Geraldton way and out of the weather to transfer the remaining oil. The maintenance of that vessel (the Kirki) was diabolical, all of the safety systems were in disrepair or circumvented and it was touch and go as to whether they could even keep the ship afloat. There is a good video of the recovery on the Kirk with a bit of satire at the very end on how the oil caught fire.

This is fantastic. An absolute classic. Clarke and Dawe are an Australian institution. Every week Clarke would pretend to be a current politician and Dawe would interview him about the political news of the week. There are literally years and years of these interviews available to watch.

Very sad day when John Clarke passed away a few years ago. Born in NZ he was an important part of the Australian comedy scene. Look up some of his Fred Dagg character skits. Dated now but still very funny.

As others have stated John Clarke was a New Zealander. Cellotape is the leading brand of sticky tape in NZ ,usually clear. In Australia the leading brand of the same type of tape is Durex which in NZ and most of world is a leading brand of condom. John was taking the piss at Australia but it was too subtle for the Aussie audience. A very witty and clever man.
Cellotape is also the common British name for sticky tape. Same way they use Hoovering for Vacuming.

They were absolutely hilarious. Brian taught me to juggle (it’s now my party trick) whilst I was doing work experience on the set of their ABC show The Games (a parody series about the board of directors in charge of the Sydney Olympics) best show it was amazing. John signed their book for me and they were just wonderful to work with everyday. It was so sad when John passed. Their comedy is as funny today as it ever was ❤
Look up the great word farnarkling. John Clarke was a comedy legend who bought us great characters such as Fred Dagg. He was originally from New Zealand but we always claimed him as being Australian.
A Commonwealth car is simply a car that politicians from the Australian parliament travel around in. This duo did a lot of these satirical skits together. In each one, Brian Dawe would play the role of interviewer and John Clarke would play a different person each week. But the thing was that he made no effort at all to look like them or sound like them. It was just him speaking in his normal voice each time. Sadly, John Clarke died in 2017. He was originally from New Zealand but became one of Australia's favourites.
The correct name of our country is the Commonwealth of Australia, just as the United States of America is shortened to America or The States. A Commonwealth car is one owned by the national government.
We used to watch Clark back in the 70's on Country Calendar as Fred Dag. A NZ treasure.

That is the best example of humour we have, by miles! It was the funniest segment on TV every week and it's well worth watching more - even though a lot of the diiscussiions are 20+ years old, they still resonate today.

John Clarke is actually a kiwi, and did a lot of comedy in New Zealand before he moved to Australia. He played a kiwi farmer called Fred Dagg. Have a look at some of it, classic vintage kiwi comedy.

Jana Wendt is an Australian veteran journalist who was a reporter on Australia’s version of 60 Minutes and she fronted A Current Affair.
They did a skit once a week on the national broadcaster ABC. Thursday night, I think. Never did a bad show. RIP John Clarke. Dave had a fabulous radio piece called Letters from Calangado. Both Australian icons. Xxxx

John Clarke was actually a New Zealander. He was brilliant at this kind of deadpan humour and the other guy played an amazing straight man.
John was a brilliant man who could take the piss out of anything, and keep a straight face while doing it
HI, a slight correction, John may have been born in Wellington NZ but her grew up and developed his talent in Palmerston North NZ and attended Massey University and Theatre here. He became a 70s icon on NZ television before emigrating to Australia becoming even more famous. His Fred Dagg character never left NZ and the back blocks of Taihape with his seven sons all named Trevor.

When that item was broadcast Clarke & Dawe were on _A Current Affair_ , which Jana Wendt was host of.

John's humour is typical of what we call a dry sense of humour. His humour a lot of times, targeted the ludicrous decisions made in certain govt departments, and in particular how mistakes are conveyed to the general public by going round in circles when questioned under any circumstances. John was a master at portraying govt ministers whom follow a particular route to evade answering questions which would ordinarily just require just a yes or no answer. He was hilariously accurate in his portrayal and endeared himself to all whom loved seeing his skits. RIP John, there's never been another like you since. Much respect ❤

When shooting these scenes, Brian Dawe (the interviewer) had to focus on John Clarke's forehead because if he made eye contact, he'd break and wouldn't be able to stop laughing.
Oh, I so miss Clarke and Dawe every week. Always looked forward to seeing their satirical take on recent events in the news. RIP John Clarke.

In these skits, John Clarke portays similar mannerisms and attitudes to a New Zealand millionaire (and for a short time, politician,) Bob Jones. John Clarke was born in Palmerston North, and Bob Jones in Wellington, which are 150 kilometres apart here in New Zealand.
Classic Clarke and Dawes, Bryan was the perfect straight man for John's humour.
For some of Clarke's earliest work that made him wildly famous, look for 'Fred Dagg Country Calendar.' Country Calendar is (still) a long running NZ weekly rural news tv show. In 1974 they ran a spoof episode featuring the fictional Fred Dagg played by Clarke.
The Front Fell Off refers to the Greek oil tanker Kirki. The front did fall off in rough seas and almost a total of almost 18,000 tonnes (8,000 initially) of oil spilled into the ocean.
The oil was contained using floating booms and dispersant. The remaining fuel was transferred to anther tanker. The vessel was towed about 1300 km north to the Dampier Archipelago.
John Clark / aka Fred Dag is a New Zealander but lived most of his latter years on the Gold Coast of QLD Aussie. To me his most memorable and funniest years were from the 1970’s and beloved song (one of many) the gumboot song, an ere when his wardrobe consisted of shorts, black tank top, distinctive ‘hat’ and of course his gum boots, dog, farmer persona. He will always be a great Kiwi icon, taken far too soon. Rest in peace 💛🇳🇿
Bob Collins was a minister in federal Labor governments from 1990 to 1996 when Labor was defeated in an election. Collins quit politics two years later and was made Officer of the Order of Australia for services to the Northern Territory and indigenous rights (irony to follow) in 2004. Later that year he was badly injured in a car crash. While recovering in hospital police informed him he had been accused of historic child sex offences against indigenous boys and his home had been raided. Child porn images were found on his computer. Further accusations of child sex offences followed. Collins was by now fighting cancer while still suffering from his crash injuries. He managed to keep delaying his day in court until he took his own life in September 2007.
He doesn't say "Your Honour", he says "Jana". He's referring to Jana Wendt, who was a longstanding anchor of the most popular current affairs program on Australian TV at the time, called A Current Affair.
John Clarke & Bryan Dawe have made many shows like this - they take an irreverent look at people & issues making the news of the day. They most appeared on the ABC (government tv network)
ABC Radio first. Then commercial TV for ten years. Then government TV for sixteen or seventeen years.

I love his reactions. He clearly has no clue and so he makes outrageous assumptions. It always makes me laugh. Proves we should take nothing for granted.
I've got an old cassette of these skits, Greatest interviews of the 20th century. More than 30 years old now. And while some of the people they are playing are vague memories, the skits still stand up as funny. Amazingly you can substitute in a modern politicians name and they still work and are relevant.

A “Comcar’ is like a personal taxi that picks you up, instead of using a cab charge. I used to get a comcar sometimes in the army when travelling home. Would get picked up from the airport and taken home, it’s pre booked, not used these days I don’t think.

I net John Clarke in the Lygon St Woolies in like 1999, he was friends with my housemate. Great guy.

FTR: the "Jana"/"Not!Jana" joke refers to a presenter on the TV show "A Current Affair" back in in the early 90s. Jana Wendt was the main presenter for the show and a household name at the time.
John Clake's genius comedy lives on in all the audio and video recordings. All his material great but I think his Fred Dagg character was the best.

RIP John Clark. I do find it amusing watching Americans trying to figure out Aussie terminology. Commonwealth car. My first job when I was 18 was with Telstra but at the time Telecom. Our cars wore federal plates with the first letter being a red Z. There was no rego label either. They were basically owned and insured by the Commonwealth. Hence being Commonwealth vehicle's. They also went faster in every gear than normal cars 😅
Well...... John Clarke did choose to go to uni in Oz. I listened to a lot of ABC radio (wireless) in the '80s and '90s. John Clarke was often interviewed, promoting fun with the English language. Things like making up poems in the style of various great poets for fun. He would also deliver monologues in a deadpan, monotone. He was a true creative artist and loved the wildflowers of Victoria, especially in Gariwerd. Other than that I agree with most comments and yes I kack myself watching Fred Dagg - or language ain't that different.
