Classic Game Room reviews EXTREME-G 2 for the Nintendo 64 from Acclaim and Probe released in 1998! XG2 is the direct sequel to 1997's excellent Extreme-G for the N64 and plays much the same with hyper-fast driving, wild track designs and futuristic weaponry. While the designers seem to make the game more EXTREME!!! for Extreme-G 2 they also mar its performance with murky visuals, frequent slowdown, boring music and clumsy track designs. XG2 is a fun game but a step back from the original that remains a futuristic combat racing game worth playing if you can find it for a good price (which you should be able to). CGR Extreme-G 2 video review features XG2 gameplay on N64. XG2 has numerous codes and cheats that unlock new bikes and features. - Zábava
This game was a hidden gem, I played this so much when I was s kid, and yes breaking the sound barrier was brilliant. Watching the gameplay abd hearing all the noises in this review brought a huge smile to my face
XG2 is the superior game. Once you learned the controls and tracks things get easier yet still has challenge. Breaking the sound barrier is one of the most satisfying things I've ever experienced in a racing game.
@The Best Part About Making Meatballs totally agree the music just doesn't fit.
I use to blow hours on this game trying to finish it in one go because it wouldn't save on my n64.
I remember going so fast i'll be hugging the track wall hitting turbos an all....man late 1990's to 2000's🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽🤟🏽
Bro I was just saying on another channel I remember playing this aged 6 back in 99/2000 90s an below legendary era 💪
@@lazy9432 frfr good ole times
Always makes me happy when I'm checking out games to buy and I find an old CGR review of it.
This game was a hidden gem. I played this so much when I was s kid, and yes breaking the sound barrier was brilliant. Watching the gameplay and hearing all the noises in this review brought a huge smile to my face!
Merry Christmas CGR.
I just got Extreme-G III for Christmas and absolutely love it! I hope you review it too Mark!
Mark, your the man! Merry Christmas from another CGR fanboy!
Lol, Turok Dinosaur Hunter sound effects at the end.
I came here to remember when i was 10 years old
Playing this game without any memory card on the nintendo 64 making me play all the entire day no rest oh lord this game sure was part of my childhood
@InecomCompany - Awesome review as always! I can tell Mark is JUST barely (like half an era) ahead of me in the gaming world because of what his childhood systems were. The 90s references in this were hilarious - Bugle Boy jeans, acid wash, and Netscape and 14.4 dial up modems. Ahh....the 90s. Only thing he missed was Indiglo watches and this review would have been epic! XD
I have this cart for my N64 too by the way. Bought it new in a bargain bin at Wallymart I think.
if you play extreme g 2, you have to mention the extreme speed that makes you break the sonic wall in an extreme sonic boom! :-)
nyood mono that part is hard to achieve unless you're a master at speeding safely around obstacles
actually, it's easy on certain tracks, the second track when you first start the game for the first time actually has a perfect section where you can easily break the sound barrier with one or two nitros.
of course, not all the bikes could easily do that. depends on their stats.
I laughed at how you could play as the Humans that drove the bikes, and ran on foot. Quite hilarious.
All hail the dedication of Lord Karnage! Posting reviews on Christmas Eve!
Seeing these N64 game reviews brings back some fond memories. Now let's see that third installment of Extreme G.
This game was far better than the first one, the main problem with this one was that it required more skill than the 1st one and that it did not explain in the game or even the manual how you were supposed to play it. The tracks were all built around the new pivot system, basically if you pull back on the analogue stick while turning the trajectory changes, this gave the bikes a crazy amount of control while still maintaining high speeds. It a real shame they dropped a lot of the ideas in this for the next game instead of simply improving them.
Also I would add that this game had the best combat in this sort game for its time, you literally say fuck it chose a combat bike and kill all the competition before even bothering with the race.
Marks reviews are entertaining as well as informative. That is all. :)
This game is so awesome, been playing it forever
the best thing about this game was the fact you could break the sound barrier, something they kept for XG3 and XGRA, thankfully.
You didn't even break the sound barrier once in the clips. That's one of the shining aspects of this game for me. The rush of going ~768+ miles per hour and hearing almost nothing past the sound of the squeal of the cycle displacing air is irreplaceable and is not matched in any other XG game (or any other game I know of for that matter).
Other than that, I agree with your review wholeheartedly: XG2 is a decently good breakneck future cycle racer with a tad too much emphasis on "BEING X-TREME".
I really really hope you do XG3 and 4.
Fantastic, fantastic games. Moreso for XG3.
isn't there a game in this series on gamecube? i think i have it still somewhere...
This reminds me a lot of forsaken on the n64!
Merry Christmas! (UK) :-)
I still remember that song he played at the end. I played the FUCK out of this game, I don't even think I unlocked everything. The framerate would dip at times cause it was so damn hectic.
I remember playing this game so much.
yeah man, did you ever play the third one i picked it up recently its surprisingly awesome
I loved this game and played it sooo much as a kid on the N64....Loved the industrial/electronica soundtrack like the menu theme,etc..... It also had a creepy/dark theme to the game as well. Wish they would bring the series back on xbox, etc. Man,this and Glover are two really underrated games I think. CGR, please do a review of Glover :D
I loved this game, took me a long while to master it. kicked my ass when I revisited it yrs later.
Ive been looking for the name of this game for 10 years... The nostalgia.. ❤
I agree. I loved this game, the only problems I had were the framerate, Some of the later tracks, and how easy the game was.
He didn't mention about the multiplayer mode where you can battle each other with tanks and do tournaments.
This games is incredible.
One of the first games i ever rented. I own them both now, and man are they fun!
I totally had a 56k modem in 1998. 14.4k was SOOO 1995!
Nice, I personnaly agree with the 2 analysis of the #1 and #2 games.
I am an EXTREME fan of the whole serie, I have finished in all possible way the 4 games, but the #2 has for me the less good for both sensation and musics.
You should have mentionned still that the #2 was the first to take in consideration the wall of the sound, which actually becomes the main interest of the game : find the key areas where we can combine nitro + turbo on the ground on a straight line to break 700 mph, heard the BANG and stop the music.. ;)
+AmnesiaGm1 exactly.
HOW DARE MAKE A REVIEW OF THIS GAME AND NOT MENTION THE SOUND BARRIER BREAK MECHANIC!? lol
+AmnesiaGm1 i was just thinking the same thing
yeah go supersonic and you here nothing but faint wind forces until you slow down and the music come fading back into play
i play so much xg3 i love it
I agree. Excellent game if you can past the optimization issues. I wish that someone would make an updated version for XBL or Steam.
In 1998 I had a 56k modem, baby! I was what you'd call "cutting edge".
Love it used to play it before school bell rang at my friends
Nice hame man . So much beter than wipeout . When u get good at the extreme g's u can do some sweet driving
I haven't played this since 2001.
I miss this game!
There is a third for Gamecube and a fourth called XG racing Association for the original Xbox and Gamecube.
This game is in my Nintendo 64 right now! :D
My younger brother has the original Extreme-G 1 on his N64.
Hey Mark. I have a copy of jet force gemini if you need it. Havent seen you review that one.
Ugh. I HATED this game back in the day. I had it for PS1, and anytime anybody even thought about using a power-up (which was all the time), the game slowed to a crawl. I had no reliable way to tell how fast I was going, and the controller might as well have been covered with butter for how accurate the controls were.
Anyway, nice review, Mark! :) I'm proud to be a CGR...ist? Ite? Ian? Yes, there we go, I'm proud to be a CGRian!
There were two. XG3 and XGRA. Respectly the third and the fourth/last game of this series.
I had both extreme g games. But I always found myself going back to the first one... Mainly because it doesn't totally suck.
I think it was XGR on the gamecube but i actually loved playing that back in the ye old day...
someone should send Jet Force Gemini into CGR
that game was the coolest 3rd person shooter back in the day... still like my 3rd favourite 3rd person shooter.
o i been looking for the name of this game for years. i use to play this all the time when i was a kid.
How about the PC release?
Quantum redshift next! Amazing game
If you do get this game, try getting the PC version. It's not laggy if you can get it to run right on newer hardware (that's the trick) and the music is remixed and MUCH better.
I once had the PC Version. Loved it and it's PC soundtrack (Yes it's different. Better in my opinion. And u can even play the tracks on a CD-Player.). Good old times..
I wish the X-G series would be still alive. :/
Greatest underrated title ever!
this game used to rock my werld
I love this game this much played the game soooooooooooo hard
You should review the adult sequel, Extreme G-Spot
Can you review XG3 please, would be awesome :)
good review, also bought extreme g2, and was also disappointed.
I agree, extreme g 2 & xgra are the best ones in the series.
Actually it's CGRundertow who should review more n64 games since there a Nintendo lovers
Do F-Zero X next!
the N64 is now considered a classic console? holy nutsack, i really must have become old :(
aaaaaaaaaah! i love this game!
I own the PC version of XG1. Always a fun Game to play. :P
And to complete the series, XGRA.
I approve of the recent flood of N64 reviews!
Everytime I rented this game as a kid in the early 2000's, I could never pass the third stage.
please review daze before xmas before its too late
Yeah this game feels like a misstep. Great vid bro
They made a PC version?
Snowboards don't have lasers, but they should...
Review Conker's Bad Fur Day please :D
I had dsl back in 1998
God, this looks all over the place
XGIII next?
i will never understand why this game was released on steam instead of xg1 i mean there was a pc version of the first game ....
Now I know what X-mas means. It's Spanish for MORE EXTREME
It's too bad Acclaim didn't polish up this series. It might have gotten them some extra sales. The only good thing to come from Acclaim in it's final days (aside from the PS2 port of Sega's Crazy Taxi) was Burnout and Burnout 2: Point of Impact. Forsaken came out around the same time as Extreme-G, and it was pretty decent.
The framerate of the first one was choppy but playable. But on this sequel, it was a slideshow at times, impossible to play for me.
I like the forst Extreme G way more, but I guess its because the 2 was way too dark.
God i loved extreme g
I loved it when I broke the sound barrier on this game!
cluster fudge is right
Best Racing Game To Date.
Xtreme!
Now i see where firebugs (playstation 1) got its inspiration...
At least he didn't hate it.
'98? 56K Flex via external Zoom modem. Then DSL in '99.
jajajajaja en 1998 tardabas como 15 minutos en entrar a Trucoteca o Guimamania para ver el truco de cualquier juego y con lo caro que era internet en ese entonces era mas barato comprar la Club Nintendo y ver el truco XD
what the FUCK IS UP WITH THAT CHANSEY?!
excellent nightmare.
How can all you freaks say this game was bad?
This was the best racing game I ever played on the N64
Btw Mark didn't mention you can destroy your opponents
My only problem are those race tracks where you can end up falling off of them
But other than that thus game is badass
Oh I bet none of you knew that the display label actually is 3D if you look at it with 3D glasses!
I thought this was gonna be Tupac on rollerblades.
I actually like XG2 way better than XG1 because I can actually control the bike in the second installment. It's like they forgot the steering controls in the first game.
Anyway if you think it's easy to get spun around in this game, you haven't played Rollcage or Rollcage Stage II on the PS1. I should send those to you because I intend on getting rid of them anyway.
OldsXCool Really? XG2 is jank city for me. The first game has tighter controls imo
I can certainly tell you love saying the word eXtreme!
extreme g2 is a fun amazing game
Now, to break up all the fuck and ass in the comments below, allow me to comment on the game some, as I've beaten it before;
Yeah, the game is tricker. It becomes a memory game after awhile, but once you memorize the tracks, the gameplay is surprisingly satisfying.
I often found myself in the starter tracks constantly above the sound barrier, once I got them down. And really, that's all you need to do is race good, and the weapons soon lose their relevance. (Except for laser mines, leader missiles and rear-fire rockets, those are reasonably handy no matter what, if for nothing else to drop and play keep-away with.)
As a spoiler, once you beat everything in the game, you can also do the ridiculous act of selecting the riders themselves as bikes. Yes, you can run at super-sonic speeds _on foot_.
+bluephreakr lol, i remember looking at my racer going in a cartwheel at super-sonic speeds. imagine that in real life lmao.
also, didnt they also made a reference to Wipeout with that cheatcode that transform your bikes into planes? (idk if i can call it planes but whatever lol)
HackerHaunter03
Yep, they did. Forgot the cheat off-hand but it might be 2094 as player name. It just makes all the bikes into paper plane-like ships.
