We continue our completionist walkthrough of XCOM 2 War of the Chosen in this episode on Legend difficulty with Ironman mode turned on! With the Assassin's knowledge bar maxed out, an Avenger Defense mission is upon us: For the third (and last) time we select ten soldiers to defend our home base, only this time, we also have some turrets to back us up. The map terrain unfortunately does not allow us to use them all that much and we also make a few crucial mistakes - can we get everyone out alive?
Achievements in Part 65 of the XCOM 2 War of the Chosen walkthrough:

Chapters:
0:00 Intro
0:55 Monthly Report
3:47 Avenger Assault
5:48 Mission Start
33:58 Mission Aftermath

In this completionist walkthrough, we attempt to beat XCOM 2 War of the Chosen on Legend difficulty with Ironman mode turned on. On Legend difficulty, the hardest difficulty setting in XCOM 2, enemies will be deadlier, more numerours and harder to kill, while we unlock new technologies slower and have to pay more to purchase useful items. To make things even harder, we also play with Ironman mode turned on, making all of our decisions permanent. Ironman mode prevents us from reverting back to an earlier save file if things go wrong, so if we mess up, we will have to live with the consequences. Paired together, Legend difficulty and Ironman mode provide by far the toughest challenge in XCOM 2 - but they also offer the most intense gameplay experience.
Since this is a completionist walkthrough of XCOM 2 War of the Chosen, we will also focus on unlocking almost all achievements in the game. The only achievements that will not be covered in this walkthrough are those relating to the (now defunct) multiplayer mode as well as the "The Few and the Proud" and the "Exquisite Timing" achievement. The first would severely limit the number of community creations that this series could feature and the latter would require us to quickly rush through the game, likely resulting in missing a lot of achievements and defeating the purpose of a completionist playthrough.
This XCOM 2 Walkthrough covers the complete XCOM 2 Collection, including all downloadable content and expansions. We will not only play through the XCOM 2 base game, but also the War of the Chosen expansion featuring new factions, missions and enemies, the Alien Hunters DLC featuring powerful new aliens, the Shen's Last Gift DLC featuring a new soldier class, and the Anarchy's Children and Resistance Warrior Pack DLCs with additional soldier customization options. Additionally, War of the Chosen, Alien Hunters and Shen's Last Gift all introduce additional achievements for us to unlock.
All customizable characters in this series are made by the Pete Complete community. Every soldier will be named after and designed by a Patreon supporter. To find out how to get your name into the series as well, check out this video (disregard the deadline): • Join the Pete Complete...
XCOM 2 is a turn-based action strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and the sequel to XCOM Enemy Unknown (and its Enemy Within expansion). It includes new units for XCOM and the aliens, new gameplay mechanics, more character customization options and a deepter tactical layer. However, XCOM 2 does not pick up where Enemy Unknown left off: Instead, the game assumes the player's failure to defeat the alien invaders in the first game and therefore begins twenty years after the events of XCOM Enemy Unknown on an Earth ruled by the aliens. Always on the run, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to rise from the ashes, expose the insidious truth behind the occupation and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.

One final Avenger Defense to showcase the Defense Matrix (which unfortunately, does not really get a chance to contribute much). Enjoy :)

Banish and Choosen Trashtalk is such a funny combination.
"After each shot I have time for 2 seconds trashtalk - but not to run."
18:46
I really like how whenever you use this skill the Chosen go "ow" "ouch" "ouchie" between the trash talk dialog
22:55 - I think Pete forgot that the Assassin attacked logan. I'd certainly be surprised is a flamethrower did 8 damage. I've never even seen them do direct damage before. They always seem to miss.
I was trying to remember what had damaged Logan, since the flamethrower couldn't have done it. I guess the Assassin's attack was just that forgettable.
Why do they always miss? I have never seen one hit before.
@@jordansorenson698 I don't know if he was in range of that attack, but yeah, they have trash aim.
26:20 - So, what happened is every shot in the game against inanimate objects has 100% chance to hit. The chance does not benefit from any aim bonuses, so it doesn't go over 100. However, the aim penalties from abilities still apply and as such a deadeye shot has only 75% to hit any inanimate object. The same applies to other abilities like chain shot or rapid fire for example. I've had the first shot of chain shot miss against the sarcophagus multiple times and it sucks
Are you sure? In my experience it's just that certain special shots are incapable of hitting certain objects. Never actually seen any of them connect properly with the generator or sarcophagus as far as I can remember and I have 700+ hours in this game. This is even accounting for the fact that I usually pump my snipers up to well above 100 aim; such that the penalty for deadeye ought to be negated and then some.
@@johnnyandtheinsatiablevoid As I said, any and all aim bonuses do not apply to shots against objects, so the fact that your sharpshooters have a lot of aim bonuses doesn't matter. Now, if you're saying that you never hit such shots means that you either only tried a few times and got really unlucky, or you're misremembering and confirmation bias came into play.
23:10 Templar Logan was damaged by the chosen assassin earlier in the mission, not by the purifier flamethrower.
32 damage indicates not the damage that sniper dealing to cannon, but a damage that will be dealt to enemies nearby from explosion
LOVE the series, hope to have similar games in the future when this ends
Xenonauts or Phoenix Point would be noice.
Wartales could be fun
Unfortunately XCOM Chimera kinda flopped
Chimera Squad and Phoenix Points are two great candidates!
King Arthur: Knight's Tale would be interesting to see. Medieval Fantasy take on the XCOM genre. Lots of loot and choices, more RPG than XCOM is.
I'm also just starting to watch an interesting indy XCOM-style game over on another channel, called "Capes." This one is superheroes instead, with a comic book art-direction. Just started but looks interesting.
The Assassin is hands down the most interesting of the Chosen. Love her, even her death is good.
I like the Hunter, that sassy bastard.
26:11 Shots with aim penalties (rapid fire, deadeye) can miss objects. Classic xcom jank.
33:17 "Multiple enemies neutralized"
my brother in Christ you just did 21 damage to a GATEKEEPER
which if you think about is the least impressive damage to the Gatekeeper, because all others were one-shot Executed, lol
Templars could teleport turrets with ability to move friedlies. I do not remember the name.
Bravo! The harriest mission I've seen from you in ages and still you whooped feet. Those misses were brutal but you recovered like the pro you are. And you clapped the Assassin's cheeks so hard and fast I'm pretty sure she's still wondering what happened. Bravo indeed!
I hope someday somehow you can play Marvel's Midnight Suns cuz I think watching your strategy around the rng of the card draws would be a lot of fun.
Hey Pete, I hope you have a good day :) Thanks for the videos, you are crushing XCOM!
With the turrets you can actually aim at the APCs firing at the Avenger if they are spotted. Makes it even easier to deal with them
Commander Pete is just toying with the Assassin now. "You got your turn to try and take me out, now it's my turn..."
It's been a long time coming for the end of this series, but it's almost here.
I appreciated seeing the Avenger Defense again. Thanks Pete!
Started playing Xcom yesterday because of your series and I'm having a blast. Thanks for introducing me to such a fun and exciting game!
It is always fun to see Chosen get Banished.
Great work! I enjoyed a lot this episode
love the "Big Bad Canon"
Another excellently action-packed mission! The amount of damage your soldiers can dish out at this stage is staggering.
It seems like the game was just too afraid to give you an even action economy with those turrets.
It didn't show how long Logan will be out for at the end, I'd like to see how long he's in the infirmary.
As always, the gameplay was a pleasure to watch.
Masterfully executed!
Another great day, another XCOM 2 video. Despite the setbacks your soldiers have once again prevailed against the Assassin and her forces, the Defense Matrix while it didn't do much at least you got to show it off to us. For once i don't know who's going to be the MVP of Operation Fire Star since almost every soldier contributed in one way or the other. Now you can return the favor by launching an assault on the Assassin's stronghold and kill her once and for all since she has fullfilled her purpose.
Poor turrets, looks like they are going to go hungry. :(
Woo-hoo, pete's the man! Makes me wonder about a couple battle scanners with my steamdeck always double clicking though, lol? I have to say after selling all my trooper corpses for no armor before the last ufo fall, and then blowing up the objective van next to a purifier, and gettin a few kinks out of my system after not playing for awhile, the last ambush while wondering that indeed 3 reinforcements for 2 guys, I went from the balcony to the hallway on the edge of the map for awhile,
and after a couple frag grenades against the troopers one at a time, and a couple low cover misses from below on my sharpshooter, it went pretty great with getting the loot at the end?, and definitely the sniper with scope, mag, and repeater might be better than the chosen weapons after awhile, with lots of scopes, repeaters, and hair triggers on most weapons like the cannon usually, if only I could get a free action to reload the three round clip with all the grenades at 20%, rather than a seven round clip, as hopefully you weren't listening to me when you made that choice, lol?
That advanced stock sure did help on the rookies assault rifle in mission 2 though? And not sure where I got it in my mind that the templar would be better than a grenadier on that retaliation rather than against lost or early ambush, but I think attacking the assassin earlier rather than running to the corner might of saved my second cpl sharpshooter on that lost train raid with dragunova tired, and with her jumping around and harbor waving the lost 25% of the time, and three of my guys from far away, and with recruits for 15 for at least 8 guys and a 49 will savant in the wing ready to be a psion, 33% reduced chosen knowledge, and then 50% excavation over an engineer while going for the hunter without a warlock in sight after thinking about it for awhile with 19 days over 11 or 12.
thanks for quality content
Actual challenge for Pete? Adore that, so good
Hi Pete! I have a suggestion for your videos - I in _no way_ want to come off as critical; on the contrary, you are one of my very favorite content creators.
I would, however, say that it is fairly difficult to track, on these completionist-style playthroughs, which achievements still remain to collect - this could, perhaps, be shown in a list of "completed vs not yet completed" at the end of a video, or even as a simple list in the description of the video. It would be very helpful to understand what remains to be finished and I think it would provide a progression excitement for your viewers to see how far you've come, as well as how far is left to go.
Regardless, I love your stuff!
Finally! We can shoot ADVENT down with a turret line.
Like and great video.👍👍
Oh that was quick. NOICE.
Looks like we just have the assassin to deal with after all of this, then to take down all of the avatar project sites. Still it was fun waiting for episodes.
Feel sorry for the Chosen. Every time they post up against 5-6 measly humans, them bringing turbo weapons & millions of HP & armour & action points, but without fail before they can even do anything much the car they're hiding behind explodes twice & a Reaper teleports behind them & shoots the back of their head over & over with up to seven perfectly-aimed shots until daddy has to teleport them back to the hugbox to recover. Rough assignment, especially when you have an overpowering superiority complex.
That fiasco with two dodges in a row ending in a revealed reaper is a pretty good example for why i despise dodge. Who thought making a hit shot randomly do half damage was fun?
Deadeye and certain other special variations on normal shots (rapid fire and chain shot, off the top of my head; perhaps also fan fire) can't hit certain objectives such as the generator and the Chosens' sarcophagi. Not sure if it's intended behavior meant to make these objectives less easy to destroy, or just a bug they never bothered to fix, but yeah; that's a thing.
Edit: I see other commenters saying it's because of the aim penalty, but I'm not so sure. My snipers are generally somewhere around 125 aim by endgame (which, in theory, should negate the penalty from deadeye and then some,) and this still happens every time.
The point is any aim over 100 doesn't matter against objects. What happens is the game essentially deletes all your extra aim above 100 and *then* applies any existing penalties.
@@95js95 Ah okay, interesting. In that case I guess it is just a coding blunder. Still, you'd think I'd have hit at least one; though I did stop trying after the first several consecutive failures.
I was waiting for this!
Ditto
This was a good mission
Letsgo !
As always a great vid Pete, after you finish this run, have you consider another game similar to Xcom_ I heard Miasma Chronicles is a good one
Hi Pete!
How many overwatches did everyone get this mission?
Hmm i thought that reaper can blow up generator using remote start. I am almost sure I was doing it like that in my game
are there any avenger defense missions that dont have high walls right in front of where the turrets go that make them useless for half or more of the map?
also i always check the turrets... they can usually see the static objects in the mission, even if it seems like they shouldnt be able to. (they anhilate the trucks)
Yes sometimes it happend. And you are able to shot turrets using your own turrets ;-)
Plotwise it looked really fine. Assassin extratcing knowledge, preparing her forces, mointing an assault and when she arrives Pete is just waiting for her, turrets and best troops all prepared. Pete lights up a cigar saying: Hell... it's about time.
But I am confused about one thing. Where is the UFO that was to attack the Avenger after the Alien Forge? Did they remove that event?
He already did that UFO Avenger Defense a long time ago
Long-War time… (Jk… that’d be pain)
Finally Pete gets hit 😢 😂😂😂
How can he see all the information such as health being counted etc
Very good game play and good tactics but your reaper positioning is terrible
That arcwave is buggy
Holy smokes... so many near-misses and strokes of luck....
XD
Bit disappointing that the scripting on the enemies is pretty bad. Why can't they make them attack the Avenger? That's their goal. All they do is stand around and wait until they get activated.
Why? They have a cannon.
