So the cheapest from Aldi worked out at just under £5 per Kg. I was at my local butchers a couple a days ago and they make the most awesome sausages and they are about £4.50 per kg. So cheaper and supporting my local butcher. Hadn't really thought about the price per Kg until watching this video - made my day to realise the small local shop can beat Aldi!

Hi Gareth, I'm a 75 year old retired gentleman of leisure. In my thirties I worked for six years at a Turkey farm in Sussex which also raised sheep (300 breeding ewes) beef cattle, pigs and a flock of chickens for the eggs. I was part of the farm shop setup and my duties were turkey plucking, frozen meat etc stock control, deliveries and I was the sausage maker. We made turkey and pork sausages and possibly beef as well but my memory isn't what it was. Lol. The recipe for each type of sausage was reached after a lot of trial and error. (Before my time) I can honestly say the pork sausages were the best I've ever tasted and nothing since has come anywhere near.
    Geoff.

Interesting comparison. These days the price is definitely a factor. I tend to buy the Morrison's Cumberland (I found the Lincolnshire too herby and needed more salt).
Being a single chap I used to cook all six, eat 3 with balsamic onion chutney, mash, spring cabbage with mint sauce; the remainder split between sausage sandwiches (and a little HP sauce) & in a pasta bake the following day. Not now. I freeze half so I'm not sausaged out!

@@lochamb1234 It's Morrisons "The Best" Caramelised Balsamic Onion Chutney (305g) which they describe as follows: "Our rich and flavourful blend of red onion, caramelised with muscovado sugar and balsamic vinegar, Suitable for vegans."
As a matter of interest, for my mash I use Maris Piper potatoes now, as they are readily available to buy online, but I used to use the Charlotte new potatoes - boiled, drained and mashed with a little butter - as I discovered they were really good.

i think looking at the fat percentage is a pretty good indicator here, it can reveal what types of cuts theyre selecting for the sausage, a higher fat content cut is usually a more premium one, some of the selection here had a drastic shift into lower fat content when looking at the traffic lights, it shows theyre using the side cuts of the animal which get thrown to the side as they have little fat (flavor) content.

Quite an eye-opener, this one.. I agree totally about over-herbing...Coriander ?...Pepper is the thing that gets me.. Some of 'em over-do it. I'm like you. It's the meatiness that matters, they have to taste like pork...! I told you before about Westaways from Asda, 16 in a box, minimal packaging., lovely tasting...correct seasoning, I think. Horses for courses though, isn't it. Breakfast..Toad in the hole..Sausage casserole...In a sandwich or de-skinned for stuffing....whatever. One more thing...Colour is flavour..! Very true for a sausage. I noticed that M&S split open...Not good..Moisture lost..Happens when pan frying, I know..Slightly too hot, pan wise, and that can happen to the best. But, you ovened them...Hmmm...Bad M&S..!!! I usually do mine in the oven for breakfast..Can't remember a splitter. But I do turn them often and exceed the stated cook time. Here's a tip..When I oven them, I rub each sausage with rape seed oil first. I think it helps. Cracking "heads up" though...I'm off to Tesco for my next sausage... Thanks mate, another good'un.

This is brilliant Gareth. It just goes to show we are paying for a ‘label’, as ‘ASH’ pointed out; if you put any of these on a roll or a piece with brown sauce, would anybody be able to tell the difference? I doubt it, and I don’t think I would be able to. Price increases . . . I think the supermarkets are ripping us all off now. If prices are going to increase, they should increase incrementally, not by a jump of 5 or even 10%. Customers will look for the best, cheapest alternative and stick with that, the result being the loss of custom to the greediest supermarkets. This is what makes your work invaluable. Thanks for the excellent review pal. All the best to you and yours.

Overall I think your conclusion sums it up well. It comes down to personal preferences. 👀We used to (going back to the 80s) Walls porkers.. NOW? Nah..😶 a lot of manufacturers changed their recipes.. 👀

Many years ago Co-Op used to do their own sausages. I remember they were a bit shorter than usual and very plump, like an oversized cocktail sausage. Don't think they were a particular style like Cumberland or Lincolnshire, just regular pork sausages. But they were absolutely gorgeous, super meaty and the seasoning was perfect. Short of proper butcher's sausages, they were the best bangers I've had still to this day.
Sadly they changed the recipe. Completely different now. Not unpleasant but nothing like the ones I remember.
I'll have to give the Asda and Iceland ones a go next week. 😀

Oh, well. Cath and I sat "hmm"ing at each other between tastes. "What do you think, Cath, hmm, hmm?" And when he said he'd have a drink between sausages, well, a Scotch after each nibble, the end result should be fun! "This is a great haggis, seasoning's just right. Hmm". Superb, Gareth, another masterpiece.

    G'day Gareth. Wow.. 🤤 a sausage convention.
Half your luck having such a choice to choose from. This video was a Banga of a review. Very professionally thought out and executed. Cooking them all together at the one time and tasting from expensive to cheapest is the best way.
It set off Hunger pangs and now I want....need a sausage fix..
Great value for effort Gareth. Cheers 😀👍🤤🇦🇺
