Trying to FIX eBay Joblot of Faulty Xbox One Controllers PART 3

- Hi, this video series shows me attempting to repair a job lot of faulty Xbox One controllers. I bought 6 of them on eBay from the same seller for £70. This video is part 3.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
You know, the best thing you can do to that seller is to FIX all of them, He obviously couldn't so it'll just show his incompetence. He tried to con you with unfixable stuff and we want him to have failed
there's a difference between "not fixable" and "not worth fixing". The seller was pawning off stuff that would take too much time to fix. Vince is putting in so many hours on these, if he was payed by the hours those controllers would likelly end up costing well over 100$. The person who frankensteined those controllers is still a scammer, but there's no getting back at them. They'd just laugh saying "wow you actually wasted your time on those". This is not about getting back at them, it's about Vince learning and satisfyingly working through such hard challenges.
Pro Tip:
At 10:43 when he's prying back the potentiometers (the green portions of the analogs) replacing the "discs" inside will solve nearly ALL drifting issues. unless the the stick mechanism itself is loose and broken, replacing the discs will almost ALWAYS be a fix. Many times you can actually get away with cleaning them with a Q-tip and some iso alcohol! They don't even need to be from another XBOX One stick. XBOX 360's will definitely work and actually I can't imagine why any disc from any analog stick wouldn't work.
An alternative fix for a controller that continues to shut down wirelessly is to reflow the connector at 23:47. You could be having a false positive where one of those pins may actually be loose, but by testing it you're putting just enough pressure on it to make a connection to the board. I bring this up because I was experiencing a VERY similar issue with MY XBOX One controller where after a few minutes it seemed like the controller would die, but the battery would be rather full. Turns out, I could forcefully shut it off by clicking the sticks in or by giving the controller a slight "twist". Pins seemed fine with a multi-meter and it kept happening. Finally I decided to use some flux and reflow the connector pins. PROBLEM SOLVED!
Underrated comment. I would determine the potentiometer value though, just in case there is a different value. Small difference in pot value isn't bad though, it can and still work.
And put a bit of oil or grease on the pot because the pot is made out of carbon which makes it's resistance, and when dry, abrasion eats away the carbon layer causing loss of continuity(connection) thus no longer working.
i actually ripped one out from my knockoff PS2 controller and put it in the XB1 controller a few months ago. Works like a charm. Potentiometer designs hasn't changed much i guess.
Thanks, that all makes sense, thanks for sharing your tips :-)
Yep, I just pull them out and clean them and the inside of the green part with a qtip and alcohol.

Focusing in on those sections of the stick never crossed my mind until I randomly came across such a video. I'm always repairing things and watching tutorials and etc... as I find them fun to watch when I'm bored so, the homepage for me is just riddled with these kinds of videos.
Needless to say, I came across a video explaining an alternative fix (cleaning/sensor swap) and it's COMPLETELY changed the way I fix drift. SO much easier pulling those back to swap or clean instead of desoldering the WHOLE mechanism and swapping a WHOLE new one in.
I don't think you said anything about the seller they didn't deserve
Seller is a lier, I would use something stronger myself.
I appreciate the way your honesty admitting and show your mistakes rather than edit them out. 👍
I know doing these videos do not make much sense but the edu-tainment value is huge. Genuinely great watching!
Excellent thanks for the feedback :-)
There are videos that go viral and get you paid......then there are videos that get you a cult following. This is the latter.
I was rooting for you so hard man! That resistor find was so cool. You're helping me learn vicariously
Wow, really good fix here Vince! So glad to see you find that resistor. What a random find! Wonder how that happened originally.
Thanks Steve, that resistor is still a bit of a mystery. Different ideas have been given on here in the comments but no majority suggestions. Thanks for watching my friend :-)
I sware....i will never get tired of your game console/controller fix it videos. I was even inspired to try my luck at fixing a friend's controller. It went through with flying colors. thanks Vince. keep them coming.
32:25 comparing the good and bad boards you can see all the test points on the bad board have been tinned. Someone has tried to reflow the board and has gotten solder all over it, R28 moved during the reflow, onto a test point.
vince got a desk, now he needs to do live repairs....
That, sir Vince, was a small, easy fix.
Emphasis on "small".
VInce, my fiance and I love to just sit down and watch you attempt these repairs, it has actually inspired us to start the hobby ourselves. Thank you for your no nonsense approach to CZcams!
About time you had a break with these controllers, whatever you may have said about the seller was justified, all these problems do help other people identify problems they may have, and saves them hours of fault finding 👍
That was very satisfying to watch you get such a good fix and you wernt pulling you hair out by the end. This tells me your experience and expertise in fault finding on circuit boards has greatly Improved in the last year! Good job Vince! Cant wait to see the rest of the job lot repaired.
You should do what I've recently started doing. Contact a local charity shop or two and offer to repair anything they have that comes in for free. They're always being given broken junk they can't sell. If you fix it then you can feel good about yourself for helping the charity. 😜 If not they're usually willing to let you keep whatever it is for spares.
Plus you don't have to spend a fortune on buying junk from e-bay. Although recently I seem to have ended up fixing a load of Stylophones. 😂
My step dad dose this, likes fixing old clocks offered to do one for a local charity shop and now they deliver grand father clocks and other all the time and not just that shop word got out (small town in the south of England)
Yay a fix for for Vince, That will boost ya confidence, Keep the vids coming, look forward to the notifications of your vids 👍
I greatly enjoy watching all of your videos. They really help me unwind from the stresses of work. Keep up the great work.
Excellent, thanks for watching them :-)
Truly appreciate this series, keep up the good work 💪💪😁
Vince, your confidence is greatly improved with repairing items. Your soldering skills has gone from a newbie level to become quite competent. Well done you, keep it up!
Personally I am loving the Xbox controller series, it is a shame you bought from a bad seller though.
Thank you Chris Paul, thanks a lot :-)
Nice work Vince keep the videos coming love watching my favorite CZcams channel
I hope that Vince will make a video after this attempting to put his original controller that worked back together.
You’re getting good at this and I’m happy that you keep your mistakes in and then rectify them as in the same video, I’m learning quit a bit from these, great work.
Vince you should do the right thing and name and shame these sellers saving other eBay buyers stress from getting ripped off.
Problem is, Vince has 400k Subscribers and knowing the internet, some of these people will go on the sellers page and punish him. I suspect Vince thought of this and he knows he has a responsibility with so many viewers.
Your CZcams channel is the only channel where I can what a one hour videos
If the seller is putting two faulty boards in the contrillers and selling them as faulty untested, he is selling fraudulently as he knows the problems and is selling trash to make a profit instead of throwing them in the bin. Why not name and shame. Why should you have to buy other parts to repair what the seller obviously doesnt do.
Great vid by the way. I enjoyed this one and your fault finding is top job again.
Excellent job Vince. Love your vids 👍
Thanks :-)
Nice one Vince, I'm glad you sorted this one, that resistor was not a easy find, chuffed to bits for you mate :)
Thanks mate :-)
The best part of this video was Vince explaining how the battle royale genre works lol
After all you said about the seller, deservedly so, you still felt this was one of your best fix it videos so it goes to show. We don't learn anything if we don't leave our comfort zone!
[spoilers]
was definitely not expecting this to go as smoothly as it did, very unusual that that board simply had a resistor out of place, I guess that's the kinda thing that happens in this realm, extremely unusual issues xD nice video
AfonsodelCB I’m typing this before reading your comment. 🤔 thank you for the spoiler warning 😂😂
Yea like a few other viewers, I reckon that someone has re-flowed the board in an attempt to fix it and blown the resistor out of position. If you look you can see that the test points have got solder on them and normal they would be just copper from the factory. Great entertainment mate, I do love watching you and often find myself shouting out and then being told from my wife that you can't hear me, like that matters. Craig.
I like the Engineer Solder Sucker.
Thanks the video Vince,I appreciate the info and I learned a few things.
The reason the coax connector looks like both sides are shorted is because they are (at DC). If you look at an IFA antenna, you'll see the antenna basically shorts the center to gnd, through a tap (The "arm" of the F). At DC, that's a dead short, but at high freq (2.4G), that's no longer true.
Thanks so much. I was expecting it to test like a TV aerial cable so it confused me. Thanks for the info :-)
Yess finally one fixed!! To do a Frankenstein quote: It's alive!! Aliiiiiiive!!!!!!! Good job finding that shifted resistor Vince.
I bought a Xbox One S controller with the same analog issue your has. The post was broken. All I did to fix was straighten out a paper clip and cut it to size. I glued it into the hole in the gray post and attached the broken part to the paper clip. Once the glue dried it worked perfectly. No need to desolder or replace.
Regarding testing procedure: with a known working board, you can check with diode mode against ground and the test pins on the board. The test pins are marked with TP e.g. TP35. You should get a reading then and can compare it with the faulty board. This could help to find the faulty section faster. Also you can set the board under working voltage and check the test points with voltage reading against ground.
Thanks Florian :-)
What an amazing fix. Really really enjoyed this one. Keep em coming boss, love your videos :) :) :)
"... And there's a nice hair there as well..." Ugh. Nice. I feel like your comments in the previous video were WELL EARNED by this seller.... You were certainly kinder than I would have been....
I do enjoy your videos though. You do a nice job, and your running monologue is interesting, and often entertaining.....
love your methods, learning alot from this channel
Love the music you use, Vince. Keep up the good work with the videos :)
Liked video 👍 also useful software and cool PC, what software is that on your mini PC? Does it work with switch and PS4 controllers or only Xbox?
Great stuff Vince... keep slagging down the seller he or she deserves every bit of it 👍👍👍👍
Thanks Dave :-)
I really love how you and your channel evolves. And your editing with the music is so smooth by now...in the past you kept cutting out the music as soon as you spoke, but now it has a pleasant transition.
Yes and that's because you are improving and becoming much better at fixing the things that you work on because practice makes you better and you are definitely getting better as you do these fix it video's cheer's to you My Mate Vince!!!
Again that was a nice easy fix and it was quick and simple and those are so often the best repairs that you can get rock on Vince:-)🤘🤘🎸🎸
Hey Vince ! I faced this broken off analog stick problem a little while ago. The analog sticks have a little shaft in them , which are the exact same diameter like a paper clip. So I cut off a piece of a metal paper clip, I put in in the shaft but it was to skinny. So I grabbed one of my parts controller which had a faulty motherboard, and I cut of the analog stick grey part to the exact size of the one what is missing ,after I put this cutoff piece on the paper clip and I put on a little lock tight superglue and done! No need for resoldering. I hope this is helpful for you, ps sorry for my bad English, cheers mate
Nice little fix :-)
Maybe the resistor R28 was originally faulty and the seller put the component back in the wrong location lol. Serves him right. Another Great video Vince. Thumbs up as always
Great spot on that resistor you make your own luck and that one was perfect. Glad to see you getting some returns from that box of crap you were sold. Nice one.
Your xbox one repair videos are so helpful.
i hope you can do more videos and find the fault in trigger always button in even the hall effect sensors are replaced.
Nice one buddy! That was not a easy find but you made the resistor swap look super easy! Getting the hang of this. Glad you're not 100% out of the money on this ridiculous sellers lot.
Fantastic vid Vince loved it really pleased to see u had another one fixed fingers crossed u get the rest working. Hope the seller gets to see these vids and is gutted u got them fixed knowing u can make money off what he sold u deeming them to be unfixable haha. :)
the first time i saw your face :D in the reflection of your pc xD
You been one of my most motivations to start to repair stuff again and i missed it so much :D
keep on repairing if it aint broke fix until it is!
I’m impressed you spotted that misplaced resistor!
yes yes YES!!! Another controller video!
Great stuff as always. I dont even own an Xbox one but its still fascinating to watch. Id like to add that I (along with all your other subscribers no doubt) really, really appreciate the hard work you put in, it must be exhausting sometimes. I like the fact that your vids are detailed and you explain things in depth. Much more interesting than the fast-talking, glossed over, ten minute videos that some put out. So thank you, my day would be considerably more boring without a bit of Vince!
Btw, if that analog stick (the replacement one) suffered from stick drift then would it be easier to just take the pots off of the broken one and pop them onto the replacement? I assume stick drift is caused by faulty pots rather than by mechanical issues.
I reckon that resistor got knocked off and then slapped back in the wrong place. Strikes me that whoever was doing those repars had all the finesse of a one armed orangutan. Believe me, if I'd bought that lot (and lets face it, they weren't cheap) I'd have been using considerably stronger language than you did, and it would have been well deserved!
Very nice fault finding on that second fix
thumbs up
Vince is really A awesome fixer 😁
Thanks mate :-)
we love your work... keep going
Great job 👍. Your patience definitely pays.
Hi, great video once again.
When you came across potentiometers you should (carefully) bend their wipers out a bit so they make good contact. I also clean it with IPA and add a bit of grease again
Very well DONE!
Awesome work! you're starting to get the hang of this troubleshooting business ;)
What’s the music in this vid? Love the jazz piano tune! Also great video Vince keep up the great work!!
I cant help it (family is in town) this is so addictive lol always great vids Vince
keep these coming i enjoy the controller vids.
Man.. your stubborness on fault finding is unbelievable! Congrats on sucessful repair.
Maybe they moved the resistor about when they were fixing the loose battery terminals? Good result, that white controller looks mint now.
Anyone know if it's an issue that the joysticks can go to the corners? An original joystick will only allow it to go to the edge in the up, down, left and right position and follows the circle round instead of going to the corners.
The capacitor that was bridged improperly is supposed to deliver power to the power management system, which shuts off the controller in the event that the batteries reach low power levels. Hence why the controller would only turn off if it was on battery power.
Meant to say resistor, not capacitor.
Thanks for the info on it, nice one :-)
Awesome job👍
Congrats Vince 😁
I want one Controller-fix-video a day in addition to the normal Videos... Loving these ;D
Thanks :-)
Refreshing to see such a successful fix for you, you deserve it. Also, One S controller is the best controller! :P (especially on PC)
Thanks mate, this one was very refreshing as it had faults but they were manageable :-)
:D never seen anyone with nearly as much patience as you have
It must be his "Canadian" temperament.
@@handsolo1209 :D damn. Now i imagine Vince as a Mounty
@@BloodyClash - His strong Winnipeg accent makes him a perfect choice for a remake of Due South.
@@handsolo1209 :D i'm german. So i can't tell if it's british or australian accent. I just love that accent
@@BloodyClash - Vince is from the London area. He has a very distinctive accent, not quite cockney, but the stereotypical London accent. I am only joking about Canada because of this ridiculous website article - naibuzz.com/how-much-money-my-mate-vince-makes-on-youtube-net-worth/
Mate you flicked that smd resistor like a boss!
Haha :-)
what program do you use to see whats wrong with the controller? i really need that for when i repair friends controllers
The seller could have got that front board from anywhere, I'm betting it was a manufacturer defect, pick and place machine made a boo boo, somehow he got ahold of it and into the Frankentroller it went.
Yess what we all waiting for
excellent work
Love your videos, I always watch them. But I'm wondering could you rotate the camera 180. Well the image.
DeltaBravo Productions I rotation lock the screen
i really enjoyed this :)
Thank you, I loved doing this one :-)
@@Mymatevince no problem, it's really good, and i agree with you on the faults, this was an interesting fault. :) have a lovely day
way to go Vince show these ebay scammers how to fix stuff!! :)
Good going. As Meatloaf said 2 out of 3 ain't bad.
Yes, it started bad but it is picking up now. I have Part 4 ready to go live now as well :-)
@@Mymatevince Please I can't wait lol
Stick drift is likely to be caused by the potentiometers on the sides. If you had taken the drifting stick and put the original good pots on it- that might have worked and have been easier.
@MineSweeper not to mention he had spares from stick drift-suffering potentiometers
@MineSweeper Right, the broken top joystick did not drift so the POTS were good. Just stick the entire mechanical part of an intact joystick on the good pots and skip taking it apart to get out the gray part.
@@kirkb4989 that's exactly what i thought he should have done when i was watching, would have saved time taking it apart.
Yes, definitely would have been easier. I just wanted to change out the broken part as I was a little bit curious to see the insides of them :-)
@@Mymatevince It's all a part of the learning process after all
The old bad board look like it had been swam out with soldering compared with the good one where there was pads with no soldering on them ?
Awesome video.
Wondering do you fix viewer controllers cos I have a controller that does turn whether you connect it with a cable or if you put new batteries in
Love your perseverance and how willing you are too dive into a new challenge :). What kind of little laptop were you using there to test wired and wireless connectivity?
GPD Pocket Mini, though there are newer models like the GPD Pocket 2
That's one beautiful solder pump.
hello, wonderful work, I like the way you fix the consoles and the controllers, I have an xbox one controller that does not work the 4 vibrators, I only have one driver of that version, it has the 3.5 mm connector, but I have 2 connectors 8 pines to attach the boards, similar to the first version controllers, do you think that I can use a plate of old version to verify if there is a short circuit or something like that that causes that situation?
sorry about my bad English.
best regards.
i really enjoy taking apart xbox one controllers as well so i see why he keeps doing these vids
Your Video are awesome!! Help me extrem with my faulty Junk buy from Ebay
Poor Vince still battling those XBone controllers. You are fighting the good fight sir!
My guess Vince is that the Original resistor could have been replaced, but inadvertently replaced to the wrong place, "that is if were not inadvertently moved when Frankenstein-n the controller" and because much the same fault persisted, the board was discarded as a Frankenstein candidate itself..
Great fix.
It looked like the other resistor next to it was on the slant and maybe that was changed out.
Question: Did you have to take the stick out or could you just have replaced the whole unit from the spares box? It looked like you took 1 apart that was whole to fix the broken 1.
The fault finding process was great to watch.
Thanks Emma, the resistor is still a bit of a mystery. The most popular explanation so far is that it was a fault by the pick and place machine in the factory and maybe the boards were initially sold as faulty but made its way into the Franken controller. Maybe your idea is more likely, the area looks very clean though.
I could have just changed over the green clip on bits on the side (potentiometers) and I am sure the analogue stick would have worked fine. I just wanted to replace just the broken part to see the inside of them and also the other one had stick drift so I was unsure about reusing the whole thing :-) You can get the OEM ones for around £3 or £4 so most people would just change over the whole unit rather than messing round with the insides :-)
When I connect the motherbords then the capacitors c23 and c20 are really warm, but when they are not connected then they are normal, meaning not warm. Could I get an answer/solutiln for my problem? Your help would mean a lot to me.
I would hazard a guess and say someone swapped that board to board connector? usually they are white not black on the single connector boards. maybe the resistor got knocked during the swap. Loving these controller vids.👍great job
Absolutely love your repair videos, I went to electronics school many moons ago, just wondering what meter and solder station you would recommend, not to expensive. 👍
JOSEPH BURBO I would like to know too.
Nice!!! Good job
"It's like a murder mystery, seeing what the seller has done" murder or not I'd call it a crime sending misleading knackered products your way. Disposing the bodies.
Nature of the "broken eBay electronics", sometimes you Loose, some times you Win ;-) GJ Mate
