Trying to FIX a Joblot of Faulty PS4 Controllers - PART 2

- Hi, this video series shows me attempting to repair a job lot of faulty PlayStation 4 controllers. I bought 5 of them (+1 part controller) on eBay from the same seller for £70.
This video is part 2.
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
Many thanks, Vince. - Jak na to + styl
These videos are NOT boring.
This is exactly what I want to see.
Excellent :-)
+1
I didn't even know fake controllers would disconnect after 8 min. Those are pretty good fakes!
Very good looking fakes Steve. Most people would not realise and looking at the amount of cheap PS4 controllers on eBay and Amazon I think the problem might be quite widespread. They will work fine until Sony do another controller update and then maybe they will stop working. These 2 controllers in the video could be easily fixed if they can be updated but as the buyers are probably not aware that they are not genuine then they will just think the controller has broken :-)
Yes this makes sense i got some cheap ones from wish and they seemed ok for 3 mins then the rumble motors just continuously started up until i turned off the controller. In the end batteries died like your one.
I got 3 fake new sunburst orange controllers from 3rd party sellers shipped from Amazon. They package looks near legit but the touch pad clicks loudly, the battery is crap, and the grip fit is poor and sharp. I sent all 3 back for full refund. Oh BTW they now come with oem looking batteries as well as the ones I took apart looked like Sony ones but they were missing most of the markings in the smooth box they print info in.
@@Mymatevince all 3 fakes I got from Amazon cost over msrp so cost isn't always a dead giveaway.
@@logan9334 Amazon is a logistics clusterfuck. Just have a product listed with the same SKU as another product, and you can expect chaos.
It feel like most joblots are scams. There is an incentive for the seller to claim they don't know what is wrong with the items when they do for uneconomical repairs, or in this case sending knock-off controllers.
Joblots: A Market for Lemons
So true. I bought a lot of old IDE laptop harddrives "for checking". Only 3 could be salvage, the rest was just ewaste sold as potential working hard drives. The bigger the quantity you buy, the more garbage they can squeeze in the lot.
Swap the front shell of this controller with the genuine you repair in part1.
The screw post is on the wrong side for the front, and the back isn’t the right back.
And the track pads are different.
Various cases are different screw posts and inner skeletons too.
Great videos vince, really liking this controller series.
Hi from Italy! I love your videos Vince! There are full of entertainment. Keep it up!
Thank you :-)
Great video as always Vince, and thanks for the tips on spotting a fake controller, really helpful.
I love this series, I have also 2 ps4 controllers fixed by myself and they are original and 100% working now and the best thing is I don't even have ps4 console and I'm using them on my old ps3 with cfw with ps4 patch for full compatibility :)
You are the only person who found my problem for couple of years 😅🙏🙏🙏👍
That is quite sneaky of Sony to check for genuine controllers, and then go 'Nah I'm not playing with you'.
Actually it's quite smart of Sony of doing this
Yes. I'm surprised you get a whole eight minutes of playtime beforehand!
8 minutes and so many seconds... I always understand 8 minutes and Sony seconds :) Very good video, love to watch them.
thanks Vince you made me feel like i can do something with my self and try and make this better in my life by making me feel like i can do something good and try something new and because of you i,m trying out bit buy bit to try and fix stuff thanks again.
Sucks that those aren't genuine, but they actually seem pretty nice for PC use.
GREAT video, thanks for the camera, much better, great quality keep it up my friend!
Going that good that you spit out a vid every day on them nice :D
I dont find these boring at all! Still very entertaining. Nice to see victory
Having taken so many of these apart for work I could see immediately that the blue one and the white one are knock offs. It’s quite difficult to tell from the outside though there are tell tale signs if you look at them closely side by side as you noticed at the end of the video. The off white colour of the light is a good one to look for, stiff/odd feeling thumb sticks and cheap feeling plastics.
As for the inside though, anything with those batteries and those analog sticks will definitely be a knock off and that terrible board and soldering job are also an obvious giveaway. Those analog sticks are cheap and nasty ones you’ll see in all sorts of knock off controllers. You can easily tell them apart as the stick part that slots into the thumb grips are usually really thin and flat whereas in high quality controllers they will be thicker and square. You’ll find that the thumb grips from these will not fit onto a genuine controller and vice versa so you cant even farm these controllers for spares.
I would say to use the shell to repair the one from the first video but just like the thumb grips, you’ll probably find that the genuine boards wont fit inside the knock off shell either.
Thanks for the tips. I did have my doubts but when you haven't seen something before then it makes it hard. Didn't help that the white controller I used to verify was also a fake!!!!! What are the odds of that :-) Now I know a bit more hopefully it will be easy to spot fake ones in the future. Cheers mate :-)
My Mate VINCE Yeah it’s very difficult if you’ve never seen one before and even harder if you cant see it side by side with a real one. There’s unfortunately a lot of them about because Dual Shock controllers all use standard parts and connect with Bluetooth so they’re really easy to copy. Xbox controllers use a propriety wireless connection to connect to the console itself (newer ones have Bluetooth as well for PC/Phone use) and as far as I know there aren’t any knock off versions, at least I’ve never seen one.
This is why almost all third party controllers for the Xbox are wired ones because either Microsoft wont let companies use their wireless technology or it’s just too expensive to license it so third parties just don’t bother as it will eat into the profit they make. I’m not sure what the reason is just all I know is that I don’t think I’ve seen a wireless third party controller for the XB1 and only a handful for the XB360. Even that remake of the original Duke controller that came out a little while ago that was officially licensed was only a wired controller but that might have been so that the screen on it doesn’t drain the battery but surely they could have had an option to turn the screen off.
Anyway, keep up the good work.
Hi Adam Keys i have bought a couple of controllers to see if i could fix them for my own use as i want to send my brother my old ps4 and the two original controllers! Ive bought a broken ps4 to try and fix for myself and the two faulty controllers that came with it!
I took apart one of the controllers and the board has a playstation logo on it and its printed on the back with JDM-055 my only concern is that the analog sticks have an orange potentiometers on them instead of the blue/green ones that most have! Just wondering if you have come across official controllers that have orange ones instead of the usually blue/green ones!
I read somewhere online that this is a gen4 controller!
Also i watched the ps5 controller teardown and it shows the new controller is using the analog sticks with the blue/green on them!!
@@Bonez88-22 Hi John, I'm not in this line of work any more, but I can't recall any time I've seen orange coloured potentiometers. Without seeing the controllers for myself I wouldn't be able to say for sure if they are authentic or not. The colour wouldn't immediately spark concern for me if the rest of the controller looks good, companies often have to source parts from different places which can lead to small differences in certain batches.
My go to tell with potentiometers is always the stem that the thumb grips slide onto. If they are thin and flat, definitely fake, if they are thick and square then you're probably good.
Check the other tell tale signs from my original comment too.
with those fake controllers I noticed you have the guts of an official controller maybe one of those will make a good candidate for a board swap!
These videos are so helpful I like my mate vince
Hey Vince first of all great videos. Second you could use the magnifier of Windows to enlarge the Picture on the screen.
My first impression was both controllers were after markets fitted into original shells. The V1 blue controller did have a black back.
very interesting...i never noticed those details.
Nice job, Vince!
Fantastic job
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this, but you can use your TITAN ONE on your laptop with your PS4 Controller to check all the inputs etc.
I fixed a couple like this which had dead battery, I made a battery connector that I then connect to a lithium ion charger, voltage is mostly below the limit for the controller circuit to charge it. I charge it a bit in my lithium charger and as it gets to 2.7v I assemble the controller and it usually turns on and charges again.
Edit: it's normal for the charge voltage to jump quite fast and then slow down as you can see in the charge curve in the image below:

Hi , Vince!! Congratulations for your lovely videos. Firstable sorry for my english and then.... Recently I get a broken brand "4gamers" controller and there is a yellow battery like your controller in the video. There is some difficult fault because when I put the cable this work correctly but if I disconnect the cable and connect again...it is absolutely dead.If I wait a several time it starts to be alive again and work perfectly...I'm lost....where can I looking for? thanks
Very interesting that those two were fakes! They looked pretty authentic from the outside! I was suspicious when I saw the way the anchor points were bent over instead of soldered, but I still had no clue until you pointed it out! Great job =D On reflection I can see why Sony blocked these controllers - it might seem a bit harsh, but the companies behind these are taking money away from Sony, and providing lower quality controllers to the consumer. But ultimately the consumer will lose out on controllers they bought ages ago, and that seems unfair to me.
Yes, very interesting. I think they look very good from the outside. If you look at the reviews on some of the cheaper PS4 controllers on eBay and Amazon they are overall very positive but look at the 1 star reviews. A lot of people mention that they are fake and have different batteries or boards etc. The problem is 90% think they are real so when they fail or have bigger dead zones on the sticks etc. they will blame Sony which will in turn harm their reputation. I can see why Sony took the security measures to only allow their own controllers. Unfortunately I think there are a lot more fakes on the market than people realise. I am tempted to buy a version 2 fake (listed as genuine) purely to do a comparison video :-)
I ain't feeling particularly charitable towards Sony or any other corporation for that matter.
You always pick amazing song when you speed up the video.
Nope 😂
Any idea on when the last 2 Xbox controller videos will be dropping
love your channel, Ive got a faulty xbox one controller ,powers on and syncs, some buttons work, sticks have a mind of their own, just wondered if you would be interested in it , also got one for spare parts you could have,
What software do you use to test your pads? I think my right stick has gone dodgy and would like to test it out.
There's a program called "SCP Toolkit" that helps with bluetooth connections to PS4 and PS3 controllers.
WinSCP is an SFTP/FTP program, you're thinking of SCP Toolkit
@@rmz1986 Yes, I knew it had SCP in the name. Do I still get any internet points?
The li-ion battery is 4.2 when it is fully charged.
If it discharged to 0% for a long time, the charger trying to charge them slowly.
#li-ion and #li-po
Those are definitely different batteries I upgraded mine to 2000mah and they look like the silver battery but it's much larger I had to mod the battery tray to fit properly
whats the name of the mat youre using? the blue one... bemn looking for it but i dont know the name
You should look into downloading the DS4 software for windows.
Hi, have you ever thought about trying to repair dslr cameras? I think that could be a interesting thing to try.
Vince, you can use Antimicro for all kinds of controllers, if you prefer to have one single software for all your tests
Nice to see the follow up video.
Thank you, I had to cut the end of the original video as I only found out it was disconnected the next day:-)
@@Mymatevince You're welcome.
Please can you let us all know what hot air station you use and would you recommend it
Oh My!!! when I purchased my PS4 I got two controllers in the bundle, and, and, and the touch pads dimples are !? ?! ?! Well they were printed on, I say "were" because from all the use they got, only the edge printed dimples on the touch pad are left, I always wondered why my PS4 Bundle box had no shrink wrap on it and I think I now know why.
The original controllers may have been exchanged with imitation ones and then the originals sold separately for extra cash, but then again I don't recall them ever cutting out????
Meh.. Maybe Sony did end up printing the dimples on the Touch Pad seeing they worked out a method of hindering the imitations by locking them out after 8 minutes or so ??? I dropped a like BTW...
Hi, on these 2 fakes, one has the dimples printed on and one has it moulded on. On all my other 'real' ones they are printed on. I think maybe the moulded ones are the ones to watch out for :-)
@@Mymatevince I hope so 😀 🙈🙉🙊
Sometimes, I guess there just Aren't enough Rocks... :\ But at least fixing was quite challenging! ;-)
Hi Vince, I have an interesting fault with a days of play (version 2) controller where the L2 has stopped working and I believe it’s a board or ribbon fault.
Lion battery is nominal voltage 3.7V. Fully charged at 4.2V (the voltage out from your charge controller). Fully flat will be approx 2.8V
I think you will wind the lion batteries are 4.1v lipo are 4.2
Lion is definitely 4.2V fully charged. You can get a higher voltage if there is a special coatings on the electrodes and additives in the electrolyte
I know this sounds odd: what about adding a little disconnect momentary switch which disconnects the battery from the controller so it reboots?
Where did you get these skills?!?! I remember your first video and it was NOWHERE near where this is.
If you have a PS3 controller laying around the battery is compatible with that for version one PS4 controllers if you can get the number off the motherboard you can probably find either a software update or just use them wired
what solder wire do you use?
sir what windows application are you using for testing controllers?
Are you going to make a part 3? I really want to see more PS4 controller. You do Xbox a lot.
hi my mate vince try dark mode on Windows 10 then we can see the controllers on your laptop my kind regards to you 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I really hope Vince takes the "6th" controller and finds a shell to put it into. And I'm wondering if Vince will finish the XBOX One Controllers.
Version 1 shells don't fit the version 2 .There is a difference in the track pad size and fit. I have a version 1 and 2 here.I tried to fit a red version 1 front shell to the 2 and it was a no go.
Does anyone else get audio coming more from the right speaker/headset? Nothing else seems to do it except this guy's videos
10:30 , :) it's look the same color of my wire on solderless board, is it the network or telephony wire?
That wire is telephone jumper wire. One wire is yellow with little bits of blue and the other wire in the pair (not seen in the video) is blue with little bits of yellow :-)
U got banbuzeld buddy great video 😅
I would swap the body on the one you fixed in the part1 for one of those if it's possible ;)
Its not possible. Version 1 and 2 shell may look the same, the inside is a bit different so they won’t fit
The voltage is dropping quick after the charging because there is a slight overcharge on the battery. This is normal after a battery has just been charging. It should stabilize around 3.5v.
i think control blue and white are alternatives or copies i repare a lot of joystick ps4 and never see these motherboars, bateries and analostics
I fixed(tried) loads of ps4 controllers, and everyone I opened was different, it’s hard to swap parts around when it’s like this.
What is your small computer named its nice for just browsing and writing stuff :D
GPD Pocket :-)
vince the boards and battery are different and they are not interchangeable
Good job great catch. The main problem is Chinese knock off ps4 controllers cant be firmware fixed there firmware isnt official so it is not fixable with official updates but you got 2 PC controllers not bad. Glad to see tilt was working.
Sony's official ps4 controller firmware update causes problems with the tilt sensors on model 1 controllers. So be careful connecting them to your ps4
Thanks mate, it would be nice to get them working but if I can't then at least they can be used on Steam. Even though they are fake they are probably still as good as a lot of generic USB controllers out there :-)
@@Mymatevince Thinking about it, a fake DS4 would be a bit better on Steam than the old Logitech USB/wireless controllers sold years ago, but same price ($20).
Its weird but "3.7v" lithium batteries are fully charged at 4.2v BUT NO MORE. They will drop down to 3.7v under heavy load (internal resistance) thus they are considered 3.7v. The little charger is working perfectly if it stops UNDER 4.2v.
I dont even have a ps4 i have an xbox one S but watching this makes me feel like i know alot of things😂😂✌💜🔥
Problem with those aftermarket batteries is they do not hold a charge as long as the OEM ones do, i added a battery to a PS4 controller that did not have one and it just never lasts more than a couple of hours gaming.
Nice
Regarding the blue battery, looks like a LiPo battery where the charge can be from 3.3v (fully discharged) to 4.2v (fully charged) and 3.7v for long storage, if the battery is less than 3.3v or more than 4.2v it's in a very unstable condition and should be handled with extreme care and brought to a safe charge level. Also it looks to be puffed, because it was over discharged, that alone deems this battery as dangerous and unusable, I wouldn't have that bomb in my hand.
You can make a small knot on the +B cable of your charger 10:30
I was thinking of a little bit of heat shrunk tubing 🤔
Knot is an ancient technology. You need nothing to make it and it's extra fast ( ´ ▽ ` )ノ
In electronics it's traditional to mark the negative side.
Wow, in russia I saw such mark on a positive wires. That's interesting
That is like no version one i have seen and i have fixed alot
The white one looks like it's cross between legitimate and fake. I think it was at one time repaired using aftermarket parts.
Yeah, I agree, the casing and touchpad look really good on that one but the board looks bad :-)
You could swap the housing of this one to the black controller that you fixed in part 1
I kinda thought they might have been fake controllers cause the thumbsticks looked like they were using the thin metal pieces in the middle which most fake controllers seem to use.
How about put Recharge Battlles in Controller
Hey Vince not trying to advertise my channel here but I do have a video from a couple years ago on how to connect a ps4 controller via bluetooth to the pc
Feel free to put the link here under these comments and then people can view it if they are interested :-)
@@Mymatevince no probs it's m.czcams.com/video/0qz8kQBr4B4/video.html
To test the battery you need to disconect it from the charger as you are testing the power from the charger only
you can use them on the pc wireless just use a program called DS4 with any bluetooth 4.0 dongle
MARK THOMPSON You correct and his little laptop the GPD pocket even has Bluetooth 4.1 built in.
Clone controllers can be very convincing unless you know what to look for. Your seller very likely bought them at what they thought was a really good price for genuine controllers probably online or off a market stall somewhere. As soon as you opened the controller and mentioned the missing solder points I though it seemed dodgy. Between part 1 and 2 I looked on ebay and saw the copper coloured ps4 controllers that are exclusive to Amazon. They sell new on Amazon for £58 but on eBay this seller had them for under £29. Lots of the other designs for the same price as well.
Your point about the analog sticks feeling stiff and being noisy compare to the genuine ones has been the case for years. I have a 3rd party PS2 controller that came in a console bundle I bought second hand. The analogs on that controller feels exactly like your fakes, stiffer and noisy compared to the genuine PS2 controller I have.
Yes, they do look very convincing. I read numerous reviews on eBay and Amazon last night and if you look at the 1 star reviews you can see how many people mention that they are fakes. However 90% of people are happy and unaware that they have bought a fake. I am all for cheaper controllers as people needs options but when they are being passed off as proper controllers then it is wrong. It is bad for the customer and bad for Sony because people will presume Sony has cut the quality :-)
exclusive? last i checked copper one was sold everywhere. what one are you seeing that is only on amazon now?
@@james42519 I was going by the Amazon UK site advert for the Copper controller saying it was exclusive. I know you can buy them eBay as well, items do get bought and resold new.

Hi I had that when I tried to out a different usb port. Make sure your USB charging port and controller pcb are matching models.
You mentioned you had a cronusmax, you can use that and the Cronusmax software on pc to go into the input checker and check inputs better than you can with what you’re using now.
Thank you I was thinking exactly the same thing when I was editing this vid :-)
My Mate VINCE yep! You can even make it highlight a certain input to where it shows you a line chart of its presses, keep in mind though that if the broken controller has a syncing issue the Cronus max will ignore that and still treat it as a working controller.
Didn't know the software could do that. Might be useful for other projects, do you know if this line chart is in real time or do you have to look back at it after the testing (hope that makes sense) Cheers :-)
My Mate VINCE real time, it scrolls by

I'm not surprised that fakes exist. There's not much that isn't faked or copied these days. Let's hope the original purchaser wasn't duped into paying over the odds for such outrageous fakery! Interesting notes on how to spot the dodgy one's though!

Original controllers say "Sony Interactive Entertainment" in the back while the fake ones say "Sony Computer Entertainment". Now, the sticker on the back of these ones looks like it has been removed and then glued back. There is no reason to do that at all which means the stickers belonged to original controllers because they do say "SIE" but if you run the serial, you can see what controller they actually belonged to.
