Current Active Duty army, serving in the 82nd Airborne Division. Piece of advice, during basic training you might have doubts or hate the experience but trust me once it’s all over and they begin to call you soldier instead of recruit you’ll look back and appreciate the times you had during basic. When you go to you’re next training (for your MOS) AIT, You will begin to fly by everything. Once you get to your unit you will realize the real army isn’t like the training environments at all. Last piece of advise, please please please read your contract, make sure it’s what you want, rest the waters first meaning signing a 3 or 4 year, don’t be like me and sign a 6 year because you may realize it’s not particularly what you had hoped for.

You just gotta have the mindset to do what you dont think you can do, and if you cant do it then theres no problem because everyone gets more than one chance. Gotta make another comment. My time in the Corps 50 plus years ago helps me to this day. I’m 73. I’ve been self employed 43 years as a contractor/carpenter/builder. I’m still at it with ZERO intention of retiring. The Corps taught me that my physical/mental limits are way out beyond what one thinks they are. I learned that I can maintain forward motion in a shit storm. The camaraderie , esprit de Corps ....great friendships made bad situations survivable. Marines don’t quit. They laugh when challenged and push/pull their buddy if necessary to move forward. I think of my time in the Corps daily and thank God I enlisted. I was 17. A kid. It made me think about how if that were in the battlefield you would be by yourself carrying a heavy pack or injured brother. They wouldn't be there to push you to move but all of your training involved they're support in your ability to push past your limits, building you up and giving you motivation to keep going in the face of extreme adversity. So each time you were faced with having to push yourself you would be reminded of all the support you have from your brothers.

While carrying 40pounds of gear and 40 pounds of medical supplies and then having to run all night and carrying people. The toughest marines you’ll see weight about 160 pounds.
Ps I never silver bullet any of my marines. If they were falling behind I would grab their flak and pull them up hill. I had a corporal pull me up hill once, I burnt myself out running after “heat” casualties up hills. We helped each other.
