Wolfgang Van Halen is BRUTALLY HONEST About VAN HALEN TRIBUTE

  • As reported by Guitar.com, in a recent interview Wolfgang Van Halen talked about issues with the band and why he thinks any kind of tribute / reunion show is unlikely. He was brutally honest, but who is he talking about exactly? Alex Van Halen? David Lee Roth? Sammy Hagar? Or someone else?

Hello. I was wondering. You have the guitars hanging in the background. Do you store them out of tune with no tension on strings to preserve the strings. Does it matter? Thanks. I was at Van Halens first and third show of their final tour. The third was better since they had a little practice.

DLR is the biggest hurdle to a EVH tribute. I’m certain of this and I don’t think anyone can convince me otherwise. As much as I love the Dave era VH and feel it is the best VH. He is by far, the biggest prima donna in the entire camp.

I've always been truly mindboggled over the years that Van Halen even made it as long as they did in the early years with DLR as their frontman.I mean don't get me wrong he's always been a great frontman & IMO (for his showmanship) one of the best, but like Eddie stated during one of his many interviews, the only important thing to DLR was that he was always the star while Ed,Mikey & Big Al were just musicians. He could care less about the rest of the band & even less about the road crew.Ive talked to several roadies of the lighting crew on one of VH's earlier tours and other than DLR giving them backstage passes (with their initials on them to pass out to the groupies which they thought DLR would be sleeping with, earning that roadie a $100 cash bonus the next morning at breakfast) they said he was a straight up a****** around the clock.

There is a difference between replacing Eddie and paying tribute to him, it's not about replacing him,it's about keeping Van Halen music alive in the live context, and if it's not done by the original member's it will be done by many tribute and bar bands, although Eddie is gone, the music is here forever!

I think the whole thing is dumb. It's nothing more than a money grab for promoters. Nobody is gonna forget about VH. They made their mark. They are legendary. They will live for infinite. Just like Hendrix, Zepplin and the Beatles do. And no tribute was ever attempted for those bands. And they didn't need it either.

That place is so small! it was in your face Rock and Roll. Then the second show as at the Tulsa assembly Center in 1979 and they opened for Black Sabbath I started peeking when they hit the stage so that whole show was a trip if you know what I mean. I'll never forget that show! OMG!!! Then in 85 D.L.R. lift the band. I got Married in 81 and we started having our family. Next I heard David was leaving in 85 and took 60 people with him for me that was the End! I still listened and bought the music but I never wen't back to see a show, my loss I guess. Hey Max,
I'm in complete agreement with you. BTW I got to see the pre Van Halen band in 1973 when they were called Mammoth. I also got to watch Van Halen soundcheck at a dive bar in Pomona with what I believe was "Running With The Devil" in 1976. Of course, I didn't know what it was then. Eddie played the Destroyer that night.

I'd like to see not a tour, but just one concert. You could have a number of musicians stand in on all areas, drums, bass, guitar, and vocals. I'm sure a great number of musicians in the music industry would love to be a part of that in honoring the memory of not only Eddie, but all genres of the Van Halen band. But I doubt it'll ever happen.

In all honesty, Diamond Dave is always up for grabbing attention at every chance. Reason why he and Eddie butted heads so much in the early 80s. If by chance Alex could still wield those sticks of thunder and occasionally fill in for Jason Bonham in the Circle, that'd be as close to a Van Halen reunion as we would get. But a music wide Van Halen tribute show would be a fitting closure after two years without the Mozart of hard rock himself here. Wolfie is right in a way, but it all boils down to one person.

  • @HotTubOwnerHQ

Almost no question that the friction would most likely be coming from David Lee Roth.
His ego is what made him a great front man, but also probably made him a pain in the butt to deal with.
But it’s great singer at Sammy is technically, it’s just not Van Halen without David Lee Roth.
But if they were going to consider a reunion they should definitely get Michael Anthony back in the band and have Wolfgang take up for his dad.

As a longtime evh fan I don’t think a “tribute or reunion” of living members is needed. Eddie was one of a kind unquestionably an icon. No need to tarnish his memory with bullshit drama. It’s funny that Wolfgang is by far the youngest and obviously the most mature. Good for Wolfy! He has his own thing going and I don’t blame him one bit for leaving those stresses behind. I think his Dad would be quite proud of him for that.

Personally, as I have watched Van Halen since they came out, DLR has been difficult to work with. He can only work with himself. Sammy has worked with countless musicians in the industry. DLR only a few and they were just getting started; like Steve Vai. For well over 40 years I have consumed everything I could read about Van Halen and in particular about Sir Edward. It was fairly obvious pre-1984 there were problems.
As for why there was a disconnect with Sammy, that I can't seem to figure out. Both sides have different stories. I do know that at one point, and I have no idea who authorized it, but they tried to take Michael Anthony off the original DLR era covers since he stuck with Sammy. There was also no real explanation why Mikey was out.
As for me, being a very long time fan of not only the band, but particularly of Eddie, and seeing them multiple times, peeps just need to let it go. I'm not sure if it's fans or the media. I think Wolfie seems to be pretty easy to get along with and after seeing Mammoth in concert, he's got a long successful road ahead. Everyone needs to just move on.
Just to give it some context, I've only cried over the death of two non-family members. One was Eddie and the other was Neil Peart of Rush. Probably two of the biggest musical influences in my life. So if anyone would love to see some sort of a Van Halen get together, it would be me. Best thing we can hope for is a Taylor Hawkins like tribute to the band by multiple artists at some point.

I was looking at this last night after seeing the Taylor Hawkins/Foo Fighters/WVH for the first time and Rick Beato made the great point that Wolfie has played on stage with/as van halen for more than a decade. I think the more interesting question would be if he and his uncle wanted to collaborate on an album and rebuild into Van Halen FOUR! Doing that on the side of his Mammoth main gig would be special...clearly he is also a member of the Dave Grohl Band so that will probably happen again. The Dave Grohl/Van Halen Project does have nice ring to it.

Wolfe is a tribute to Eddie he is his son and so talented his father worked with him and taught him the tribute to Taylor Hawkins was beautiful and so was Wolfes playing he did an amazing job i know people have been complaining about a tribute for Eddie but it’s not necessary not for me i enjoyed seeing Wolfe playing his father’s music and maybe he will be comfortable doing it again once in a while I’ve felt bad with some of the comments I’ve read when it’s not up to Wolfe to handle it There’s some strong minded people that were a part of the band namely one that I remember that had more ego than anything else but did contribute for a short while it’s unfortunate it’s the way it is because so many loved them and I’ve heard good and bad but I also know that Eddie and Sammy made peace before he passed away and that was a good thing to happen most bands don’t have a tribute when they loose one of their members of their band Rush didn’t when they lost Neil so at Taylor’s tribute they dedicated their playing to Neil i think it’s more behind the seens then the remaining members that are still alive sad ofcourse it would probably be a sold out show but DLR has some medical issues that his doctors made him stop doing concerts because he canceled a tour he was doing i love Van Halen but I’m happy to play and listen to them without a tribute

Wolfgang already did the tribute, from son to his father . That’s all that matters. Eddie left the world sober, playing at his best ability and was there in Wolfs life till the end. Even though a tribute would be cool, it just shows that no one can honor their band mate who passed away.

Dave already did a tribute, he dedicated a song to him with a message, "hey Ed, I'm gonna miss ya. See you on the other side." It's incredible how idiots want more fireworks and an explosive show in tribute to Eddie. The band gave us that for 50 years. No big hoopla extravaganza tribute concert can top any of that. Just let Ed rest in peace. VH is over. Sam running his mouth constantly, pimping his tequila and margarita mix all the time is disgusting. And then saying Ed came into his dreams and wrote a song with him? What the hell kinda morbid, self-obsessed shit is that?
