  • Do you have a 27 inch iMac that all of a sudden goes black screen and totally unresponsive? This happen to me too and eventually, the iMac wouldn't even turn on!! (or at least the screen wouldn't). So after tryiung some things and having what I thought was smoke come out the back, I finially fixed it! So unplug the imac, remove the cover where your RAM is. Eject the RAM. Plug back in the iMac. Power on the iMac with the RAM ejected. You'l here a long tone and might see a error. Power off your computer by long holding power button. Unplug your computer. Put RAM back in, hold down power button as you plug in the power cord. Worked for me and I have not experienced any black screens since!

I too have a late 2015 iMac 27” & had just updated to Catalina. I had a black screen afterwards. I tried doing to command, option + p & r thing & nothing.
This was the ONLY thing that worked + I got to see how easy it is to upgrade my ram. Thank you! 🙏🏼

Thanks for posting this tip! I was running out of things to try, then I finally found your video. While your tip worked the behavior on my 2020 iMac was a bit different. I popped the ram tray out, pressed the power button while simultaneously plugging in the power cable. The fans started up like an airplane then I pressed the power button to shut off the iMac. I pushed the ram tray back pressed the power button and the Apple Logo finally appeared. I then restarted in Disk Utility mode and ran a repair on the volumes, containers, and then disks. I then rebooted (pressing command+ option + P + R) to clear the VRAM, then rebooted again (pressing shift + control + option) to clear the SMC. I rebooted then booted all the way up to then performed a shutdown. I’m now booted all the way up successfully and upgrading MacOS to the latest version. Thanks again for sharing this fix!!

My imac went completely unresponsive during a security update (2020-005 for High Sierra). Unresponsive to any USB input, including keyboard. Tried everything under the sun, your solution is the one that worked. Thank you!! Saved me a lot of trouble. One thing to note though: it didn’t make any sounds and the screen didn’t turn on at all, I honestly thought it might not work. When I put the RAM back it, it took a while but it booted and now it continues the update installation. We’ll see how it goes after it finishes.

I was having a similar but different issue with a late 2015 27" iMac. I use it as a second monitor and occasionally it would revert to a standalone computer. When I'd try to reset it as a monitor (Command +F2) it both machines would react, but the monitor iMac would stay black. I tried your solution and so far it has worked!!! YAY! Thanks!

Outstanding! I was at my wit's end after trying everything I could find online (keyboard options, reboots, re-install OSX, disk repair etc.) about this intermittent black screen on my iMac. Your "cleanout" solution worked beautifully. My Mac is an eariier model 2013, but the procedure with the power cord worked just fine.
Thanks for posting this, I was at the point of parting with $$$$ to get a professional fix. Saved me heaps of money. Much appreciated.

This happened this morning and would boot with the chime and despite zapping the pram and resetting the smc behaved the same with no video display on the iMac display or any of my two external displays. Strangely enough your video worked. And I'd reseated the ram within the machine within a month or two at most previous. I also blow out the air vents with compressed air regularly because I've seen buildup of dust causing greater processor throttling noticeably.

Holy shit - this saved a 2019 27" 5K iMac - I removed the display for upgrading to an SSD - reconnected the screen and got no signal at all on the display (total black screen and only two green LEDs on the motherboard. I have reset SMC, and tried to reset PRAM (does not work since there is no boot sequence).
I opened the damn thing again and checked all the cables and connectors under a microscope but could not find any damage....
I always had the feeling that there was a reset problem on the motherboard but did not know how to reset it completely...
This "Eject the RAM. Plug back in the iMac. Power on the iMac with the RAM ejected" I´ve done it twice and now the damn iMac, which ate away 2-3 hours of troubleshooting time runs again!
Thank you so much for posting this video, and saving a couple of big bucks and hours of sadness.

Just did a similar fix with my iMac. Same issue, black screen, wouldn’t boot up, tried every startup trick and nothing worked. Ended up ejecting the RAM slots on the back and hitting it with an air duster. Tried starting a couple of times and same issue. It wasn’t until I held Cmd+Opt+P+R on startup, that it finally decided to boot up. Got a LOUD startup chime and it started properly. Working fine now.

That’s very interesting, who told you about the solution? Of course I’m having this problem because I’m looking up a solution for mine but the solution for mine is to turn down the brightness on my monitor because if I turn it up to high, the screen blacked out and also in order to get the screen to turn back on you hold down shift control and hit the eject button. No need to do hard resets. If your issue is different than mine then these Macs were just doomed from the start.

3 24/2020 Mid2011 27" iMac halfway to fixing I think lots of fine dust near Mory holders after fan came on full blast and 3 beeps after cleaning memory chips found all working by testing them in a working iMac mini replaced into 27" iMac when turning iMac back on black screen 1 beep which I think is a bad 3.5 HD constantly clicking from having plugged and unplugged it so many time with the power on. Ordered a Torx screwdriver set so I can go deeper into the 2011 iMac and replacing the HD with an SSD 500GB, hoping that will allow for booting and no blackout screen when booting ( screen will turn on for a split second if I hit a key while booting then black again. Next, if it boots will have to figure out how to get an OS installed to the SSD HD.

I haven't had the issue myself, sounds like your ram wasn't seated correctly, or it shifted due to heating and cooling over time. Thankfully the RAM wasn't bad and you were able to fix. Thankfully in addition it wasn't your logic board . Maybe also blowing the dust out also helped with heating, if the exhaust was blocked by the dust, or it was on something that generated too much heat.
I have only had two macs out of all the one's i've owned that actually required warranty work.

I’ve tried EVERYTHING I’ve seen on the internet about this issue. You have finally provided the answers. I ended up replacing the stock ram with the new ram sticks. Then I put the original stock ram sticks in the empty slots. BOOM! It worked and my Mac booted up.

What if there is no beeping noise and the screen remains black but the fan is still running? Does that mean the HD has died?

Even as this is an old video! But you also saved my life! My logic board of an 2014 late iMac broke. So I got a very cheap logic board fron an iMac 2015. I swapped it in and the first boot got a chime and an Apple Logo. Yes it worked with the Display of the original late 2014 iMac, even if some people (especially from Apple) stated that this will not work.
I couldn't boot into my formerly installed NVME-SSD (from the 2014 iMac), so I hought there might be a problem with the installation. Couldn't go into the option mode to choose a boot stick, couldn't go into the restore mode. Then resetted the NVRAM with unplugging, waiting for 30 seconds, pushing the power button for more than 5 seconds, put in the power cord, chime but again no chance to get by with booting to the stick. OK tried resetting PRAM. Bam after that no chime, no screen, no nothing. Again resetting NVRAM, bam loud FAN-Noise no chime, no screen.
Then I saw your Video. I thought to myself " this will never fix my problem, but what do I have to loose?". OK took out the powercord, ejected Ram, put the power cord in, loud beeps (now some reaction yeahhhh). Put in the power cord, used the power-button and the system got a Chime an Apple-Logo and just booted into the Catalina System without any issue.
Hail to you man I am so happy! Many many many thanks to you!

@@JRESHOW So if you still have your iMac 2015 and your screen is broken, you can just swap it with a much cheaper late 2014 Screen (not mid 2014). Again thank you so much, I was at the point to just forget about this iMac (throw it out of the window) and just use my modded 2011 iMac (Nvidia Alienware hacked Graficscard) further on 🙂
