I grew up on such a bike about 50 years ago :-) This style of bikes is still very much alive here in India and I suppose the rest of the colonial world.
Thank you very much for the video. After watching the first bit, I removed the front rod system which didn't work. Cleaned and kept for fixing later. Cheers!
Thank you so much for this video - particularly the trick regarding angling the front brake blocks. I can now stop my bike without the front fork having a scary epileptic fit. I simply did not understand how to set it up. Braking experience on the '56 Standard K is now smooth & more positive...' though still a bit lacklustre!
So glad I found this channel. I did up an identical bike while in rehab from being knocked of my carbon road bike a few years ago. I took loads of photos before stripping it down and managed to get it back together and working, but as you so correctly say, "rod brakes are crap". I have that terrible juddder, so am looking forward to putting your tips into practice. Only other issues I had were getting the pedals and cranks off (never managed that) and a Sturmy Archer hub gear that appears to have a "neutral" gear. It looks as if the neutral is meant to be there as the marking on the bike top tube, by the lever are "L - N - H"
N means Normal, or middle gear. Try your cable a little tighter. Just off tight in top gear. I have a video on removing cotter pins easily and cheaply. Its on my channel.
For people asking about replacement blocks: Sunlite sells what looks to be a suitable replacement that they call Stirrup Caliper Brake Pads. Presumably there are retailers who'd send them to the UK (not sure if JBI, the owner/supplier of Sunlite, supplies UK shops)..
Thanks RD , very informative with useful tricks to get this piece of job which is the bit I completely dislike doing.i can't seem to know how much to tighten the bolt where the stirrup pin connect to the lever ( pinch bolt ) I have damaged couple of them in the past for over tightening Any advice most welcome.
Hello, great video. Do you have to get a full headset/handlebars in order to replace the rods or can broken ones be replaced without getting a new handlebars?
Hello, you have any suggestions for tightening the keeps that the rod brake runs through on the handlebars? I have one keep that is slightly loose. many thanks
1” quill risers are available. Alternatively the handlebar assembly from a loop frame bike has a taller stem as well as longer rods. That’s what I did when I built a Flying Pigeon from a kit.

I've just spent four days banging my head off the wall with the same problem. Did you manage to fix this?

Hi, I have a 1980 Superbe, are the front brake blocks angled and the rear straight ? Tia,Ken.
When did Rayleigh stop fitting rod brakes on their bicycles?
1983

Withdraw the rod from the keeps, don’t remove the keeps (!), just turn the keep clockwise until it stops being loose. Reassemble.
@@unbalancedcrank Hello, thank you for the advice, it worked a treat.

I have a bike like this and need to increase the handlebar height...Is it possible to fit a stem riser to a bike like that (22mm stem)
You might need to make longer brake rods. Often the rods on ladies bikes are longer.
@@unbalancedcrank I don’t mind doing that….but do you know if a riser is available, and thank you for the reply…appreciate it! Vincent

@@unbalancedcrank Many thanks for the reply…not sure what a loop frame is…but Ill look into it! Vincent
