In about 1970 or so I saw BB King sitting not too far from me in the gym at Wabash College in Indiana not too far away from him for a concert when I was a freshman at Purdue. Was I ever lucky then! What a treat!
Hands down slide guitar players are the best blues players. I love John Mayer he's one of my favorites but slide guitar players lick Derek are just so damn unique!
Listen to For My Brother live from the Georgia Theatre from about 10 years ago, the first ten minutes of that track are freehand(without slide). It is truly some of the best guitar plating i have ever heard. I dont doubt John Mayer would dispute this either(Im a big fan of both Mayer and Trucks!)

Derek's forte is slide, but he can play his guitar in Open E like it was a normal guitar. Mayer is a good singer and he's got the fingerpicking thing down pat but he's not so much a guitarist .
you've obviously never heard the man play without it. He's actually quite a bit better without the slide. Its just his signature to wail with the slide

I mean, I love derek but hes great only with a slide, without it mayers way better. Different styles
