  • The temple of chess is a concept that we intend to begin in Vidyavihar, Mumbai in the same building as the ChessBase India office. IM Sagar Shah gives you a tour of the place and seeks your feedback about the concept!

Since space is limited, the business model should be based on a booking system.
This whole space resembles a small medical clinic, with 3 components:
    1. The cabin room could be used as a physical 'Doctor chess'. Could hire 'doctors' (basically, moderately high rated players) who can offer consultations for new/lower rated players like game analysis/coaching etc., hence they can also earn some revenue. They could also prescribe some books on loan.
    2. The narrow space shown at the start can fit 2 ppl - which is perfect for chess, hence it can be 'booked' by 2 ppl. There could be a chess board and it is more like a place to catchup and try some positions from books etc. Adding a coffee machine somewhere could make this place cozy.
    3. The big room can fit around 4 ppl max, a small square table with a chess board is a must. This room again can be booked through the same booking system and is mostly intended to be used for making use of the books available there.
So that makes it 7 users at a time (8 including the 'doctor'), so I will leave the unit economics to you :)
    Some physical infra:
    1. Definitely some repainting of the walls could be nice to make it look like a cool chess space instead of an office. The walls could also have famous chess positions. One idea is for the big room, there could be an interactive display and we can gamify certain hours/days, where a group can come in and solve chess positions and you get some rewards for crossing some milestones. It is more like an escape room like concept but chess themed.
    Digital infra:
    1. Booking system
    2. Catalogue of all the books available in that space
    3. Users can create digital profiles so that memberships can be done in the future + supports gamification ideas.
These are some initial thoughts I had on seeing this at first glance. There are some loose ideas to integrate with Chessranga and also given that it is right in CBI office so maybe will update this post later once I have something concrete!

It’s nice to see this, The people staying nearby could very much benefit from this initiative. Sir, Since ChessbaseIndia is a big Brand now, i request you to setup Open Chess Club or something like this in every state, where people can come and play by paying a nominal fee. It would not only encourage youngsters but also help the business grow.

For that CBI might need local support from everywhere(every city).
sagar bhai can't go to each n every state to do it. Or a multi millionaire should take interest in the initiative for that to work at a bigger scale in shorter duration. However as sagar bhai started slow and small someone has to do it in every popular mall in there respective cities and go small and if the growth is exponential over weeks n month you can plan a club kinda theme. Here but do remember sustainability is important mall is not gonna give free space and if they don't see benefits certainly it will be costly affair. And ofcourse Sagar bhai's club have sagar bhai or amrutha, samay occasionally as star attraction , people should be attracted to come , once that happens its a boom like no other.

Hey sagar bhai,i think chessbase India should open chess parks in India....where chess players can play with random people offline with a beautiful environmental views...it would be fun and exciting

    1. Learn & Practice go hand to hand; having a library is a great idea, but library should also have some computers that help to quickly put the learning into action
    2. Space, people should have enough space to sit and read
    3. Environment - it should be peaceful and conducive enough
    4. You should start digitizing the book which do not have copyright problem, if you start now...may be over a few years you might have x% of the books/magazine digitized that will definitely help the upcoming chess youngsters
    5. To promote you should start small program of puzzle solving competition once every month, may be like puzzle would be from these 3 books, and winner will be put on wall of fame...this encourages reading and learning
    6. Provide bonus classes - example: Know your game - your team members will play 3 quick games, and provide 15 minute analysis on your strengths & weakness and recommend books and encourages to visit the library
    7. Encourage parents to read the books which can alleviate peer pressure on their kids

Thanks to your channel, I started following what is happening in the chess world though I know very little about chess beyond the direction and how much each piece can move. What attracted me is your love and admiration for every single player unlike commentators in some other sport who try hard to prove that they know more than the player himself/herself. Your channel must have started small but now it is part of the Indian , if not the word, chess world. Similarly, your temple of chess is a small office as is normal with every new effort. Your followers have already made a number of suggestions. It is brave for a Non-government funded organisation to attempt something like this. Chess Base needs an office and, in due course, is sure to grow and contribute to Indian chess in more ways🎉. Kudos.

Hello Sagar, with so many books, a library model seems an obvious next step. I am not sure what you had in mind, but I would recommend to get people to help in digitising the books and then the digital version would become great assets to all levels of people as it could be used to query specific openings or any other line of understanding being sought. Over time, with AI sitting on top of the digital content, this could become a treasure trove to do more and more advanced querying.

Congratulations. Good thought. Books and discussions are the fundamentals for budding chess talents. Chess is a religion in itself and in that belief you can rightly call the place a temple. Sustainability of interest and efforts in the long term will surely be a question as you are talking about occupation of a new office space for the project.
By the way I am not aware of the city in which this facility is located. Though there are lots of chess academies coming up in cities these days on commercial lines, the one I recall doing yeoman service for chess is Tal chess club of Chennai which has cradled so many chess GMs of India and has been functioning for a long time with a mammoth reputation. Study the model and visit them, weave in their ideas and cooperation. I feel the place would serve better if it is used as a ground for discussing the theory and practicing chess by the local talents duly guided by the elders of the game present around. Kudos to the sincere and well meaning individuals associated in the venture. Wishing all the very best for the project.❤

    Great idea!
But Chess Base team should decorate the walls with some paintings of chess pieces or board so that it looks more passionate for Chess lovers. I also think that Chess Base India's team should add these things for other states as well (Chess club and more). Keep it up, lots of love & respect for Sagar sir and whole CB India's team for popularising Chess in all across our country!🖤✨

Hi Sagar. Firstly this is a fantastic idea and Kudos for you to consistently come up with new ideas like Chess Ranga, temple of chess etc. and continue to make significant impact.
As a suggestion and as a person not staying in Mumbai, i too would like to benefit from it. Hence if we could have a membership concept where a fee could be collected and i could choose a book on website or app and if that book could be couriered to my address. Once I'm done with the book, i can return it back and could take the next book. This is a similar concept to other libraries that operate like justbooks, kwench etc. happy to discuss more

Its a good idea🎉 but we can make it more intersting by adding colors and patterns to walls rezembling chess pieces and openings to make it look way cooler and interesting to visit...chess books be covered using a pawn symbol for beginners and opening related books and rook symbol for good books like more of a peofessional theory..I guess providing a chess board or like computer to try on openings variations....and provide everyone with a booklet kind thing to complete and maintain record of progress they have been doing..but stil i would love to visit such a place, we can use vibrant colors and patterns to attract people from outside to visit this place .....❤❤❤🎉 Hope my suggestion helps😊

To enhance your chess book library, consider organizing books by skill level, providing comfortable seating, and ensuring good lighting. Implement a digital cataloging system and include e-books. Add chess boards for practice and a multimedia corner for instructional videos. Engage the community with workshops, lectures, and tournaments. Include chess magazines and instructional guides, and fund the library through membership fees, sponsorships, and donations. Regularly gather user feedback to continually improve the library's offerings.

Interesting idea, but the space seems limited. At least this is the impression I get from the video. A library needs to be spacious to accommodate people (especially if a lot of people turn up on a given day). I would not like to feel claustrophobic and close to another person while reading (but YMMV). This idea is even better if it is integrated to a chess academy of sorts (and I'm sure you have this idea planted as well).

  • @higgledypiggledycubledy8899

Lovely idea - but regardless of the details of implementation you will still need a librarian to organise those books and magazines :)

Nice Concept. One question to IM sagar shah: As you know, here in nepal, not even a single GM is here, we need to improve our level of chess, i am 1800 in online rapid and bullet format and username is TheGuideToChess. If you are asked, how a person having rating 1500-2000 would improve their chess skills, what would be your suggestion?? I think the answer of this question will help dozens of other players as well and waiting for your suggestion. ..
