Those cylinder marks are from piston slap/chatter. That's what happens when the piston wears below the minimum bore spec and begins to angle itself in the bore enough for the rings to gouge at the nikasil.
Yep, nikasil is quite thin coating… you’re right, piston slap will do exactly that. But Joe said the piston looks perfect, so it can’t be that, even though he doesn’t measure anything.

I just overhauled a suzuki that would smoke like that but worse. It was the piston rings that was letting oil by and burning it up in the chamber. When you first started it there was nothing and when the oil got pumping it would start smoking. Just like this bike did. I could have re ringed the piston and it might have been fine for another 30 years? But I bought a 67mm piston and just had a shop bore it over. He said it was .100 over and not many if any oversizing left in it. But I think it was this bikes last chance at life anyway. They sold it to me for parts. You can put the motor at topdead center add air down the spark plug hole , Using the compression gauge adapter for the spark plug hole, And feel the muffler or feel the back of the carburetor and tell which of the valves Are leaking and needs adjusting, Quick and easy and it only takes a few minutes, No need to disassemble the engine 1st , just to find out if you need to adjust the valves,
Compression went WAY up after you put the cams back where they belong. Cam timing will have a MUCH bigger effect on compression than a valve that's tight when cold. So long as there is ANY clearance when cold the valve is fully seated it's sealed. Clearance is to allow for expansion when hot which closes up the clearance. Retarding cam timing increases top end power, advancing increases bottom end power.

While you have it tour down I'd clean out that exhaust pipe on that fourwheeler to Joe. Cause I'm sure it has A lot of motor oil residue. All over everything inside of it now. Which is causing it to smoke really bad also.
The question is: How did the timing get off? Looks like someone else has been into this thing and reassembled it incorrectly. Why can't sellers JUST TELL THE TRUTH? Same ol' same ol'.
Supposedly there’s a an exhaust cam mod where you change it a tooth like it was done here and it changes the torque curve of the engine. I’ve never done it though.
What's that smoke?? Sticking rings from setting for extended periods and Valve Seals are fried. Frankly, I would change the sparking plug, check the carb for the sake of it and change the oil with Valvoline Restore and Protect. That oil will clean ring lands, guarnateed!! Did I mention, that fan is obnoxious!! If it were my mosheen, I'd most certainly invest in a Panaflow for quiet operation. Marvel doesn't hold a candle to the above mentioned Valvoline!! Far from it, actually. Having cam timing out of spec can mess up overlap and cause low compression at low rpm. Will run good at redline buuut... Advance the cam timing 4° will bring out the low end performance and make a torque monster. Cam timing has tradeoffs. Borrow from the top and add to the bottom end or borrow from the bottom and bring out the upper end power. That is why car manufacturers have gone to Variable Cam Timing. It does the deed at each end to maximize power throughout the range.
For me it seems difficult to understand why this machine needs a new cylinder. It seems to me that a good honing on this cylinder would be good since I never saw you use a pop out guage to see how much the cylinder was worn.
Wbich part# shim kit are you using Joe ? As im lookimg on line , they're are numerous kits , most of which are spec'd @ 5 , 7 , & 10mm . Yeah I've ask a bunch of times but no answer. He probably sold it the way it was and didn't finish putting it together or he lost the video.
As subscribers I believe we deserve to at least get some replies. Rockpowersports channel answers most of all channel I sub.
While you have it tour down I'd clean out that exhaust pipe on that fourwheeler to Joe. Cause I'm sure it has A lot of motor oil residue. All over everything inside of it now. Which is causing it to smoke really bad also.
Timing may not be off. Some guys will move timing by one tooth to match the timing of yzf450 dirtbike.
I LOVE THE POWER OF THE BIG POOR BIKES!
Wait a minute does Vinny approve ? Maybe that's why it's smoking LOL 😂😂😂😂😂
Great display of your diagnostic acumen 👌
Wow! I watch Joe most days at work for the past few months. I just noticed I wasn't subscribed lol
@ least it is a runner and nothing is blown up.... It will run like a charm when you get through with it next video...!
Glad to see another YFZ video, let’s goo 🔥
That crank looked like it's been hot
When you put that back together do the cam mod you will be glad you did
Ball hone the hell out of it, put new rings in..... good to go.😊
What about a rebore & piston, rather than new barrel? I guess this is a straightforward fix, but still quite a job.
Hello from new zealand joe
Would it not be cost effective to get the barrel re-nicoseal lined.
he rather buy some junk off ebay
I'm all about Del West❤
It might have went to far to have it re lined. Should never hone nicoseal.
Check your wire plugs, bad connection maybe. Usually stupid simple fix.
For me it seems difficult to understand why this machine needs a new cylinder. It seems to me that a good honing on this cylinder would be good since I never saw you use a pop out guage to see how much the cylinder was worn.
Excellent video. Keep them comming please
You have to change the oil periodically 😂😂
made sure i was good and baked for this one!!
Wbich part# shim kit are you using Joe ? As im lookimg on line , they're are numerous kits , most of which are spec'd @ 5 , 7 , & 10mm . None seem to be specd for the lower tolerances such as you have in youre kit .
Wantimg to get a somewhat "universal" kit ( Honda , suz , yamaha, etc..) at the lower tolerances , to have in the ahop .
Thanks Joe
Back in the day those were selling 8000 out the door.
I dont believe any ring set is going to push oil up. Black smoke is fuel, blue is oil and white is coolant. How do you think it jumped time?
With the cams out one tooth I can’t believe it ran at all and or didn’t bend a valve.
