    Oil rings bad. My 06 Honda rancher sat in my barn from 2016 until 2022. Got it out, drained the tank, pulled the carb, cleaned, reassembled it all back, new battery, went on a ride with out of town with a buddy and our sons together, was smoking slightly at first, by day 3 it was a freight train steamer on the trails. Shutter down on day 3. Put her back away till 2 months ago. Rings were stuck. Used original piston and jug, rehoned the cylinder to like new. Now she runs better than she did 18 years ago when I bought it. I did wear the crank/wrist pin .001 over the service limit in the Honda manual says, but I was not gonna replace my crank to do it. So I bought a new wrist pin, am 002. Clearance there now with a new one. Crossed my fingers, slapped her back together. It runs absolutely great now. Have about 10 hrs of riding since did it.

    Those cylinder marks are from piston slap/chatter. That's what happens when the piston wears below the minimum bore spec and begins to angle itself in the bore enough for the rings to gouge at the nikasil.

    • @munter10
      @munter10 Před měsícem +1

      Yep, nikasil is quite thin coating… you’re right, piston slap will do exactly that.
      But Joe said the piston looks perfect, so it can’t be that, even though he doesn’t measure anything.

  • @christophermarshall5765
    @christophermarshall5765 Před měsícem +3

    When you took the cylinder off, I was looking for the ring gaps to see if they were lined up. That also causes oil burning. Once I saw that cylinder, I knew it was past the use by date, so to speak. You know what you are doing. I agree with new cylinder, piston and rings. Once done, you will have it running like a Swiss watch.

    Sand ingestion. Want to bet that the seller put the filter back on before he sold it? The evidence is the entire outside of the piston is bare aluminum, and you can see the metalic flake in the oil by the wrist pin. In a normal healthy engine there should be carbon above the top ring, and it's absolutely bare

    That being said , what happens to them ? I've watched 2 or 3 that you tore apart , needed parts , and they've disappeared . The Cub Cadet UTV comes to mind . It's almost like you buy one , find out it needs more work than you were hoping , and you lose interest and move on to another project . I get having a couple so you can keep working while waiting for parts or whatever , but we never see the final product on some of them . Just curious where they go and sad to see them just fade away I guess .

    I just overhauled a suzuki that would smoke like that but worse. It was the piston rings that was letting oil by and burning it up in the chamber. When you first started it there was nothing and when the oil got pumping it would start smoking. Just like this bike did. I could have re ringed the piston and it might have been fine for another 30 years? But I bought a 67mm piston and just had a shop bore it over. He said it was .100 over and not many if any oversizing left in it. But I think it was this bikes last chance at life anyway. They sold it to me for parts. After a little riding and getting the oil burned off that I left in the exhaust on purpose. There is no smoke. I have some HD videos taken. I might post them?

    You can put the motor at topdead center add air down the spark plug hole , Using the compression gauge adapter for the spark plug hole, And feel the muffler or feel the back of the carburetor and tell which of the valves Are leaking and needs adjusting, Quick and easy and it only takes a few minutes, No need to disassemble the engine 1st , just to find out if you need to adjust the valves,

  • @bdefayette
    @bdefayette Před měsícem +1

    Compression went WAY up after you put the cams back where they belong. Cam timing will have a MUCH bigger effect on compression than a valve that's tight when cold. So long as there is ANY clearance when cold the valve is fully seated it's sealed. Clearance is to allow for expansion when hot which closes up the clearance. Retarding cam timing increases top end power, advancing increases bottom end power.

    I agree with it sitting too long and the rings became stuck. The damage to the cylinder would have been after the previous owner started it after being stored for a long time which I think I remember you mentioning in the beginning of the video, that and the first test ride on the land probably didn't do it any favours either, in saying that I still think the damage was already done before you ever touched it, I'm not gonna tell you how to do your work but I would like to make suggestions, I would highly recommend slightly tearing the bikes down before attempting to start them, at least pull the head and side covers to look for any potential damage or maintenance.

    I'm at the 6:40 point and given the symptoms I'll take a guess and say that it's an electrical issue with wires possibly exposed and rubbing on the frame that is causing the cutting out issue. Well, here goes....

    Not a bad looking quad,I like it!!! I figure as old as that quad is,. I’d replace piston and rings,. If I’m not mistaken I believe a piston has3 rings 1 being oil ring on it,.
    When worn/smokin’quad.. JMO ,.
    I wasn’t even registering valves being burnt,. I had gotten so use to working on 2strokes,. I forgot about valves in four-stroke,.
    Do u still hav the CR500? I’d maybe consider buying if u hav it fo’sale😁(at decent price of course,..

    A lot of people change the timing forward one tooth like that because that's how the YZ450F is set and adds a bit more power.

      Supposedly there’s a an exhaust cam mod where you change it a tooth like it was done here and it changes the torque curve of the engine. I’ve never done it though.

    What's that smoke?? Sticking rings from setting for extended periods and Valve Seals are fried. Frankly, I would change the sparking plug, check the carb for the sake of it and change the oil with Valvoline Restore and Protect. That oil will clean ring lands, guarnateed!! Did I mention, that fan is obnoxious!! If it were my mosheen, I'd most certainly invest in a Panaflow for quiet operation.
    Marvel doesn't hold a candle to the above mentioned Valvoline!! Far from it, actually.
    Having cam timing out of spec can mess up overlap and cause low compression at low rpm. Will run good at redline buuut... Advance the cam timing 4° will bring out the low end performance and make a torque monster. Cam timing has tradeoffs. Borrow from the top and add to the bottom end or borrow from the bottom and bring out the upper end power.
    That is why car manufacturers have gone to Variable Cam Timing. It does the deed at each end to maximize power throughout the range.

    Wantimg to get a somewhat "universal" kit ( Honda , suz , yamaha, etc..) at the lower tolerances , to have in the ahop .
