    In this video, we show you how to replace the lock cylinder and door handle on your Toyota FJ Cruiser.
    *PARTS*
    **I believe OEM handles are the way to go and they’re not much more expensive than aftermarket ones. What I found out myself and what I’ve read on Amazon reviews of these aftermarket handles is they don’t work as well as the OEM ones. What I noticed and others noticed is the handle sticks a bit and doesn’t always close all the way and sit flush with the door.

    Love your videos ... just did rear axle bearings with your help and only issue was manipulating HF 20 ton press.
    You see, the 2003 Tacoma has given us 20 years of care free service other than routine maintenance and now I'm in my 60's and she's starting to show her age at the wrong time. Nevertheless, I will never get rid of that truck😁

    I just installed the black door handles from 1A auto yesterday and they are not tight like the originals , they are a bit loose.

      Everything we know about this job is shared in the video. Without me being there to see what's going to, I can't really advise you on what to do. Are you sure you're locking the handle in correctly? It needs to snap in place.

    perfect timing for me......i hope heard you mentioned 1A-auto for the handle parts. do you have enough experience/knowledge with their parts to have an opinion on quality, their prices worried me to good to be true for my rav4, nearly bought an FJ cruiser instead of my tacoma in 2006🤔

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před rokem

      I have literally no experience with 1A Auto other than with the handles they sell for FJ Cruisers. The aftermarket handles they sell aren't as good as OEM and that's why in the video description I'm suggesting people buy handles from Toyota.

    If you remove a brand new door handle and lock cylinder, you'll find grease on the contact points. So lubricate the relevant parts.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před rokem

      I saw no signs of lubrication on the OEM handle but I did try a little lubrication on the friction points of the 1A Auto handle and it helped a little but it still had the propensity to not always close all the way. Then I read in an Amazon review of another aftermarket seller of these handles with the same complaint. It's my belief all these different sellers are sourcing them from the same supplier in China and the design is slightly flawed. When I put the OEM handle back in with zero lubrication, it did not stick in the least bit.
      The new door lock cylinder had no signs of lubrication on it either. I guess I could have put a little grease on the "X" that engages with the door mechanism.

    I don't know that I ever appreciated being able to order parts by VIN and end up with a correctly keyed lock core.

    • @TimmyTheToolman
      @TimmyTheToolman  Před rokem

      You can buy a new lock core, but it comes with a new set of keys. If you want it keyed to your original ignition and door lock key, you have to take it to a lock smith like Rey did.

      @@TimmyTheToolman BMW allows you to order tumblers with pins for things like luggage. Pretty easy to set the tumbler up. It can be a PITA to extract the old tumbler--I'm pretty good at it. If you needed a coded key, you can get that too. Just need proof of ownership. Keys are cut, coded, and sent out in a couple of days. When I went on a tour of their distribution facility in Stockton, I got to see the folks in action. If someone punches the ignition, you can order a new one with a new key (sometimes best) too.

      @TimmyTheToolman  Před rokem

      @@ian408 Yeah, Sean mentioned to me he was able to get Toyota to make new keys for him based off his VIN. I wonder how much Toyota would charge to set up a lock cylinder to your original key. I'm guessing it's not any more affordable than a locksmith. $20 seemed like a very fair price. Thanks for sharing this info.
