I’m 72 and have chronic fatigue syndrome as a consequence of contracting Lyme disease, and I can’t begin to express how much pleasure your efforts are bringing me. I remember having the same strength and stamina that you demonstrate when I was YOUR age, and vicariously sharing in your energy is SO gratifying. Your home is going to be a showpiece, and I really appreciate watching your enthusiastic willingness to transform it back to its original grandeur. Hi Guys, there is no comment box on my feed so I thought I’d leave my comment here. When I heard you talking about replacing a load bearing beam (that’s holding up the roof) by cutting out the rotten beam measuring it and putting a replacement, I said uh-oh, not that way. You need to put support in, quite a substantial support, before taking out the old rotting beam to replace it. Kind of like jacking up a car to support the car when you replace a tire. Be Safe!!! Have fun!!!

I would really recommend to you that if you are planning on keeping the piano in your house while you renovate. To wrap the piano up so it does not get destroyed from dust getting inside of it. It is very expensive to clean out pianos that have dust from a house renovation and just dust that accumulates over time. So I would wrap it up with even just saran wrap and make sure to get all sides of the piano like under the piano especially because dust can get everywhere.

There’s an article online from the Vancouver Sun, Google it. They purchased it together as a couple (I think it’s just a slip of the tongue on her part - maybe from years of YouTubing/social media promoting her own things, it’s second nature for her to refer to herself, rather than “we”) and they are renovating it together - and good for them, I’m loving watching their progress, so enjoyable and they make a great team! And also, just reading so many peoples’ comments and feel the need to say, they shouldn’t feel the need to justify any of their decisions, it’s their property and they can do as they please. The property otherwise would have been abandoned and become even in more disrepair and they are giving it a new lease on life, making necessary changes to modernize (and repair) it for the next few generations, but also being sympathetic to the history of the property and architecture, bravo 👏🏼

Landscaping does have a shelf life. Shrubs get overgrown and too big for the area it was planted in. Same with tress. Save your pictures so that when it comes time, you can maybe show them to a landscape designer and they can give you a plan or just ideas. With tree and plant development and proper planning, you will be able come up with plants that are more appropriate for your growing zone and climate. With all the rock you have, it would be so pretty with a bunch of evergreens and woodland plantings. It could look so pretty in time. And if you design it properly, you could make it as low maintenance as you like. ❤😊

I'm really happy that you're invested in adding plants back into the landscape - just take your time with it, and I suggest contacting native plant greenhouses in your area (a lot of what standard commercial greenhouses sell are exotic ornamentals that have little ecological value or are even invasive (not that every non-native is bad, but do your research)).

Oh my, house foundation issues too & maybe the pool? Lol, "your neighbor may have a pool soon.". Your ability to look on the brighter or humorous side of an enormous project is why I keep watching & wishing you the very best. I believe you will get this done, one way or another. Even foundations can be repaired, with an Engineer & or experienced Contractor of course, but they can be rebuilt, for a price. The big question is, will the price be worth it to restore, or is bulldozing & rebuilding better? Don't be afraid to cut bait if restoring is more than bulldozing & rebuilding. I know you will figure it out. You got this.

You really need to hire a chipper to work with your garden waste, as the chips take up less space (there is less air between them) so you will get more in the bin. Also, blackberry/bramble bushes tend to have a tough root system, so if you don't get it all out, it will return next year so consider using weed suppressants so they don't see sunlight. You can pull back the suppressant every so often and get to the weakened stems and pull them out then replace the suppressant.

What people usually have here in the nordics is a tractor powered wood chipper that can eat up to 8" trees and then chips them all to 1" chunks or sell that stuff to be burned for district heating and some farmers also have pellet crusher & chippers that chip and crush wood to uniform pellets for heating (works similar to an oil burner).

For the hilly area of the yard, you can plan out a winding path that goes down the hillside. In the areas between the path, plan out different garden beds filled with native flora, herbs, and flowers. I think midway down the hill it would be nice to create a flat area in the hillside to place a small seating area for a small table and two chairs. It would provide a beautiful, calming place to have a cup of tea or coffee and give a beautiful view of the surrounding area. You could also plan a water feature for the yard that uses the hill to its advantage. A small pool at the bottom of the hill with a faux creek/spring at the top feeding it, following a concrete creek bed. The change in elevation would lend itself to a small waterfall as well. You could put a few small fish in the pool as well.

In the area close to the pool you cleaned out I would plant either a Cedar tree which was in one of those pictures or a Weeping Norway spruce, both are beautiful ornamental trees and add beauty and go with your surroundings. Another small ornamental tree is a Japanese Maple, beautiful color.
