Once you started getting into your analysis of the themes at play in Origami King, IMMEDIATELY my mind was cast to Sasaki Sadako. She's a well known figure in modern Japanese history... essentially, she was two when Hiroshima was hit by the nuclear bomb, and while she wasn't hurt by the bomb in any direct manner, by the time she was 12 she developed Leukemia from radiation exposure. While in the hospital being treated, she was taught about the legend of the 1000 paper cranes, which, as the game faithfully presents, states that by folding 1000 cranes one would be granted a wish, a task which she dedicated herself to.
And while she never got any sort of wish (though she did meet and exceed 1000 cranes), her story lives on as a testament to both the wretchedness of war and the importance of trying to live a full life even if the powers that be should (fate, god, luck, whatever) decide for it to end suddenly.

    • @STULF20X6

That was what made my trip to Hiroshima really special. Learning about that story, what people's lives were like after that, how Obama's visit literally changed the tourism to the area, and how the entire city pays homage to Sasaki with the over abundance of paper crane decoration scattered throughout the city. The context to the crane's particularly left an impact

I felt that with Bobby, but I especially felt that with Olivia. Like:
Being young is watching Olivia sacrifice herself and thing "Okay Olivia, thanx fam."
being an adult is seeing Olivia wish herself away, when she could have easily wished anything else, or at the very least say "except me". Which then brings about a debate about the difference between sacrifice and suicide (which I'd argue, as there were so many other options, Olivia's "sacrifice" wasn't actually a sacrifice). Bobby's death is even more crazy when you compare to similar things in the other games. Bobbery almost died, but then he didn't because, obviously you need him as a partner. Grodus was blown up and turned into just a head by the Shadow Queen, and he didn't die. Luvbi, who was turned back into a Pure Heart, doesn't stay dead in the post game. The entire Sammer Kingdom was literally consumed by the Void - and might I add that the inhabitants of which are not found in either the Underwhere or the Overthere, meaning they didn't die, they actually ceased to exist - and even THEY didn't stay dead. Kersti was immediately brought back after sacrificing herself at the end of Sticker Star. But Bobby? Bobby dies and STAYS dead. I mean, this games plot is actually pretty damn dark if you analyze it, but this on top of all that? Good lord... It's nice to see see that Paper Mario is staring to try it's best at having dark plots again.

What I loved most about Origami King was how it tried to give the toads a collective characterization that built a bit into the themes of the game.
From Sticker Star onwards, since the Toads couldn't have huge visual differences, the writing has attempted to lift each one up to varying success, but I think TOK has the most interesting interpretation of them.
They all come off as these sort of oddballs that are in varying states of obliviousness to danger or growth, and often get themselves into trouble because of the tendency to do stuff without thinking. Like the Toad Craftsman; what was the point to giving Olly life when all he was going to do was be an ornament for the Origami festival, and while Olly's motivation was clearly flawed, it's clear he didn't have much good guidance when he had been brought to life. You have the Toads casually cutting down the Whispering Woods despite the trees being alive and resenting it. You see Captian T Ode steal the Marino without thinking of the consequences.
These seems to be this running theme of them being these oddballs, not unlike the Candy People from Adventure Time, and it all seems to be making some commentary on the new restrictions that the designers have with the Toads. It takes their base personalities from the games, and just tries to push it to the extreme to give the Toads an almost surreal vibe to them. They're not villains, but it's clear that they're not all there, and they never seem to learn from any of it.

Honestly, I'm more surprised you didn't talk more about the music in this game. It's one of the BEST video game soundtracks I've heard in an extremely long time, and complements the aesthetic of the game perfectly in every single minute.
The main battle theme being reworked in each chapter to fit the aesthetic was genius, and every single song in this game serves the sole purpose of enhancing what you're experiencing aesthetically and thematically. Yoshito Sekigawa was one of the main composers of The Thousand Year Door, and he took on the role of lead composer and sound director for this game, so that's another aspect that's taken from the older games.
There's also all the random song breaks, and I think it added so much personality to the game for me personally. I honestly think that the Shogun Theatre sequence at the end of Chapter 2 was the most enjoyable 40 minutes I've ever had in a Paper Mario game.

Paper Mario's always been for outlandish encounters, so seeing that the script was able to elevate such obvious appeals to the aesthetic into characters that can be seen beyond purely their appearance and function says SO MUCH about the game's writing, as that is an incredibly hefty hurdle to climb. The one thing that has never changed about Paper Mario has been its ability to surprise me, even if Sticker Star ended up being a particularly unpleasant surprise. With this game, though, it seems like they finally figured out how to work within those restrictions and still come up with something great. The creative spirit always breaks through.

Technically it wasn't JUST Miyamoto's meddling that fucked things up. Technically nobody at Nintendo said that they had to use exclusively Toads and Goombas and other basic Mario enemies. Even with the restriction of "only old Mario baddies" there were still plenty of monsters they could've chosen; Yoshis could, y'know, exist meaningfully, the weird paint Mario apparition from Galaxy and Sunshine could've been in Color Splash (big missed opportunity,) they could've pulled from Super Mario World and used things like Blargg or Rex, but the team got lazy and decided to do the most basic shit possible.

Finished it last night. It's pretty damn good. While I still have a lot of hang-ups with The Origami King that were also present in the last two PM games, Origami is the first PM game that I've fully enjoyed since TTYD (I have issues with SPM's overall gameplay and pacing despite it still having a lot of the qualities from the classic PM games). That said, I am still disappointed with TOK because it feels like a good game that was held back from being truly AMAZING for frustratingly arbitrary reasons like Nintendo's silly character restrictions. You really feel the devs desperately struggling with those mandates with Professor Toad and Ode, resorting to distinct facial expressions to try to make them stand out.
And then there is the refusal to use the greater roster of the Mario series. Even with the restrictions on modifying NPCs, why are Toads STILL the only non-Bowser affiliated normal NPC race that they're willing to use when the mainline Mario series already has Piantas, Nokis, Lumas, Gearmos, Whittles, Penguins, Yoshis (still feels weird that they're not in this even as a cameo) and dozens of other options that could make the world so much more exciting and lively. Why is Birdo one of the deepest cuts in the roster.
While the boss fights are absolutely amazing, the normal battle mechanics, while being way better than CS and SS, don't go nearly far enough with the combat system. Enemies all feel the same mechanically with a few exceptions which cause the puzzles to feel tedious before long. It needed more stuff like the Boos and the Lil' cutout soldiers that I'm shocked were only used like 3 times. It also needed more types of attacks that could hit different enemy formations beyond the vertical rows or quads of enemies as well as different weakness types to make both the puzzles and combat more interesting and varied instead of feeling a bit paint-by-numbers. Also we need more types of action commands again beyond timed presses, they feel like they're just there as a formality now and don't add much to the game anymore. If they are ever willing to embrace their RPG roots again, the turntable battle system has a LOT of untapped potential to be something MUCH greater than TTYD's combat and I hope an indie dev takes a crack at their own spin on the system.

I think a lot of design restrictions likely came from the puzzle aspect, I was thinking about this while playing - why not have like, the tail attack hit in a different pattern, like a half crescent shape on a single row? But then I realized - if they had added items with more attack patterns, it would have made the puzzles much more complicated; there would now be much more solving possibilities to take into account. Either they add the crescent as recognizable puzzle solution whenever you have the item in your inventory, OR you would need to fail the puzzle on purpose to make use of it, which would make that item weaker since it wouldnt benefit from the puzzle solving boost. Seems like one of many small ways there is a tension between the puzzle and turn based combat halves of the system

The levels are more inventive and diverse than you might think going in - they are pretty great actually. The paint can - hewy - was a really good character. Not like the bubbly, naive and witty Olivia, but good in his own way. I recommend the "touch + buttons" setting so you can select and paint cards without using the stylist - makes the game 100% better and removes most of the common objections I've seen in reviews about the game (card stacking would be the only recommendation I could give the developers honestly). It's not the default setting. Also, don't use "Advanced" setting that people often recommend since that one is equally as bad since it disables buttons as well.

I think it's totally fair that a lot of people skipped out on Color Splash because of it seemingly being another Sticker Star (and especially on a console few people even had). But a lot of the things you praise in this video are arguably in that game too. While Origami King is the better game for sure, I always felt that they managed to do a lot with the pre-established enemies and characters in Color Splash. Many of them are also NPCs you can interact with and a lot of obscure enemies are brought back, too. Bowser also talks again (thank God).
Even gameplay-wise I feel like Color Splash is a much more successfully-executed version of Sticker Star, puzzles are way less cryptic and you're always told what items you need for boss battles. There are also plenty of memorable locations in that game, like a wild west-themed area and a remote set of islands with a secret that was honestly the highlight of the game for me. Hell, I even think the world map was a good thing too. Rather than connect disposable levels it actually connects areas you often revisit multiple times, mostly eliminating the backtracking that bogged down parts of Thousand-Year Door.
While I have few hesitations in recommending Origami King, I also think Color Splash is great for anybody willing to go in with an open mind. It still manages to have a lot of character. I honestly think it's way too overlooked even if it doesn't quite hit the same highs as Origami King, so I hope you do give it a chance sometime.

This game has touched me. 2007 was the last time I got to experience a true Paper Mario title. I remember hearing the fans complain about the departure from the turn based combat, how not having traditional partners was blasphemy and much more. I disagreed. SPM was a fantastic, but different game. It didn't have the things I loved about the last two games, but it had the soul of the series. At its core, the series is about adventure, deep underlying story elements eclipsed by a largely light hearted and funny coating, and the ridiculous situations Mario and co. get into. I had no idea that what would come next would be so far removed from what I loved about the series that it'd break my heart. After Sticker Star (whose impact on me needs no explanation) Color Splash only served to destroy my hope for anything resembling a Paper Mario game. With people demanding partners, badges and turn based combat I thought that the true soul of Paper Mario would be lost. The story, the adventure, the characters.
And suddenly, I awoke to the brand new trailer of an all new Paper Mario adventure. It must be the same as the last two right? Just a soulless, bland Mario game. Regardless, with all hope depleted, I knew I would buy it. I owed it to my childhood self to see if this was the tombstone on the grave of what made me so happy as a kid. Around that same time, Bug Fables, an RPG molded from the very atoms that made up Paper Mario 64 and TTYD, was released on switch. It was tauted by fans as the Paper Mario we had been waiting for. After seeing gameplay... I immediately purchased it. I went to start the software and dive into what I knew Origami King wouldn't give me. A traditional Paper Mario experience. But I paused. Xenoblade was releasing soon, I would have something to play until July. I had work, I had my other hobbies. I thought for a while, and turned my switch off. I decided to wait until The Origami King released. I should wait, give the game a fair chance and then play Bug Fables. I didn't want to play something knowing it was what I would enjoy, just to sully the experience of something I knew had no interest in appeasing me. Origami King wasn't made to recreate the feeling I got when playing Paper Mario 64, TTYD or even Super. It was a game that had its own identity, that was evident enough from the trailers. I just didn't know if it'd be what I desired in a Paper Mario game. The characters, the story, the settings... would they be intact? Or remain a shell of their former selves as they had in the last two games? All I knew was that playing Bug Fables would give me even more bias, and potentially impact my enjoyment of TOK. So I waited. I still haven't played Bug Fables, but I've 100% completed TOK.
My decision may have paid off. Though I don't know if Bug Fables would have made me bitter towards Origami King, I do know that Paper Mario The Origami King is a game that satiates my craving for something I would say deserves the moniker of "Paper Mario". A story fueled by superiority complexes, sacrifice and utterly hilarious comedy mixed with body horror. The Origami King really reminds me of Super Paper Mario. Its the third game in a line of similarly styled Paper Mario experiences that rejects much of what made up the identity of its two predecessors. It created a new battle system and focused on what it thought was the best thing to focus on. It is a game that exists for itself and does a damn good job at it. I love Paper Mario The Origami King. Not because its the Paper Mario I wanted, but its the Paper Mario I needed. It proved that just because the games aren't what they once were, they can still have that same spirit they once held. The settings, the comedy, the story and even the characters hidden in the generic Mushroom Kingdom enemies and citizens are ALL great. This is the feeling I had longed for.
Just like with SPM, there are those who dislike it for simply not being TTYD or 64, but I know that this game will mark the beginning of a new and promising era of Paper Mario. Let the sales speak, let the game speak. Paper Mario is, unapologetically, back.

I think the series is in a difficult spot. I think it’s trying to reinvent itself which I respect but in that attempt a lot of the great stuff about the first few games has gone out the window. The combat of Origami probably will be different to the next game too, so they can’t fully develop and improve this system. The series is defining “throwing the baby out with the bath water” imo.

    • @evo683

I think they are stuck in that Nintendo "do things different" mentality, and it's only going to hurt series identity and make for an experimental mess each time. They did pretty decent for what it's worth with combat in Origami King, but still could have been so much better (and is a huge step away from the first 2 games).

I'm SOOOOO happy to see everyone here showing this game the respect it ABSOLUTELY deserves, I'm one of the biggest fans of "The Thousand-Year Door" ever and I actually feel this game truly rivals that masterpiece (and I don't make a statement like that lightly)!!!
I do recommend playing Color Splash because it seriously makes "Sticker Star" look like a beta of a bad joke by comparison, it won't blow you away as much as "The Origami King", but it's still definitely worth the time (one of the first Toads you rescue in the game cracked me up by saying the line "I lost to the first Goomba, just like a grandma", if they're going to keep abusing the amount of Toads in these games I'm just glad that they're filling them with unique personalities now, a task which OBVIOUSLY "Sticker Star" failed MISERABLY at).
Just saying though you may not like what you find if you revisit Super on the Wii, because I did recently and that game is CHOCK-FULL of HORRIBLE design choices not to mention stands as the EASIEST GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED BY A LONG SHOT (they even failed at their Legend of Zelda reference in the game by having the text claim the currency as Rubees...IT'S RUPEES NINTENDO, HOW'D YOU MESS THAT ONE UP)!

Also, this game is delightfully happy to throw you a game over, sometimes for a cheap gag shortly after an auto-save or before giving you the option to just go back to the point you got owned. Jumping in lava in PM1? Like five damage. OK? You're paper, in lava.

Oh Boy, this was a long comment to type but I will say this.
But for everyone and Paper Mario fans
I'll respect your opinion on not liking or being mixed on Paper Mario The Origami King besides we all have different tastes in video games and that it's best to respect other people's opinions too we are all entitled to have opinions on video games, negative or positive.
I'm not a fan of Modern Paper Mario, I'm not a fan of Old Paper Mario. I'm a fan of Paper Mario as a series.
Now I never grew up with the last two Paper Mario games but I did play Super Paper Mario as a kid which was my first introduction to Paper Mario getting me hooked on the series/franchise and I'm glad to play it on my Nintendo Wii so many great memories playing it.
I would say this I really enjoy and love playing Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash and I'm happy to give these two games a chance because of trying new things in the Paper Mario series/franchise sure I understand why OG Paper Mario fans want to go back to the original battle system and story heck I play Paper Mario 64 on the Wii U Virtual Console great game and a perfect way to start a spinoff/franchise but if you continue doing the same battle system and story it will get boring in my opinion.
I think Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash version of EXP It’s more so a feeling of progression and self-growth more than lack of EXP. While yes Sticker Star and Color Splash lack EXP, it still has Mario grow by getting more HP Hearts, Coins, Secret Doors, and Extra Book Pages to store more stickers and for Color Splash it's the Mini Hammers to upgrade your Paint Storage and you get more powerful battle cards as you go on with the story even getting an HP Heart at the end of the Chapter/Big Paint Star which I thought was pretty cool and unique in my opinion.
Now Paper Mario The Origami King version of EXP is confetti to fill your confetti bag to patch the Not-Bottomless Holes which is like Color Splash colorless spots which is pretty good, coins to buy badges/accessories and better weapons to help you in combat you can even use coins to spend on the battle timer to gain more time also you can use coins to call in Toads to cheer/help you in battle, exploring the world to find hidden secrets and toads, HP Hearts to make Mario stronger and many more that I won't spoil for everyone. I myself really enjoy the self-growth and progression EXP a lot in The Origami King and the battles are super fun and great even the bosses battle are super unique, creative, and challenging and I love it a lot in my opinion.
I enjoy and love every partner in Paper Mario from Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Watt, Sushie, Lakilester, Tippi, The Pixls, Kersti, Huey, and finally Olivia each having unique and cute personalities to them. (I would be happy to say the other partners' names In Origami King but that would be spoiling Paper Mario The Origami King sorry everyone)
The partners in Paper Mario The Origami King are so fun and watching them act/fight in combat are so great to see and sometimes it's best and learned to say goodbye to the partners we made on our journey/adventure but the memories we made with them are worth remembering.
I'm not a big fan of post-game stuff in video games but I can understand that for people who like doing post-game stuff and I'm fine with Paper Mario The Origami King showing you a secret cutscene at the end and mention your 100% achievement also giving you a gold star in your profile pretty good way to end a great game in my opinion.
Of course, not all the Paper Mario games weren't perfect, nothing is perfect, but all of them were still fun and exciting also cool to play all the way through.
I don't mind people calling Paper Mario The Origami King "Sticker Star 3" or "Color Splash 2" because I really had a great and fun time playing Sticker Star and Color Splash from beginning to end.
I'm super glad to finally play Paper Mario The Origami King on my Nintendo Switch super great game from beginning to end also 100% it too anyway my rating for Paper Mario The Origami King is a 9/10 from adding so many new things, fun and great battles/boss battles, puzzles, and creative bosses even the story is great and I would highly recommend this to fans of Paper Mario Sticker Star and Paper Mario Color Splash in my humble opinion.
I'm really glad to play Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario Sticker Star, Paper Mario Color Splash, and now finally Paper Mario The Origami King, and I would be happy to put Paper Mario The Origami King on my top 10 games of 2020.
I'm not interested in getting Bug Fables because that's not my cup of tea sorry everyone again.
At the end of the day, we can all agreed that Paper Mario is a great and fun series/franchise that everyone can enjoy old and new that's the true magic of Mario games anyway peace everyone.

In fact, looking back, TTYD wasn't that great, especially after playing all of the Mario & Luigi games (ESPECIALLY Dream Team despite the awful tutorials), Paper Mario 64 is perhaps the one I still like the most of the two classics, mostly for the level design. Super is my #20 favorite game and my ABSOLUTE favorite of the saga, especially thanks to the story! Color Splash is my #65, I had a lot of fun and laughter with that one, although I agree in the too many toads argument (but he's still my main driver in Mario Kart). The Origami King is quickly climbing on ranks, already sitting in #25, thanks to the absolutely hilarious dialogue, Mafia Tape and Psycho Scissors!

Thank you so much for making this video, you put into words my exact feelings better than I could've done it myself. When I was done with it I just couldn't believe they managed to make me feel just like TTYD did all those years ago. I hope more people that grew up with the originals give it a chance because this game certainly has the soul of those games in it.
Definitely the biggest surprise Nintendo has given me in a while, I could never have expected to feel that Nintendo magic in a Paper Mario game again after Sticker Star, Color Splash and Paper Jam. Especially one that was just announced randomly 2 months before release.

    About the art style:
It's not the game LOOKING 100% like paper that's bugging people.
    That part is great.
The problem is that it's not just a style anymore, but an identity. The characters are literally made of paper instead of just looking like they're made of paper, they talk about how they are made of paper, they can't stop joking about how everything is made of paper. The Paper is canon to the world, not just the art style.
So since none of these characters take their own existence seriously anymore, it's impossible to take any of the attempts at drama seriously either.
I know it may be silly to complain about "immersion" in a Mario game, but the old games created a world that was genuinely believable. You could believe that every single NPC had their own life, their place in the world, their friends and family, and their stories to tell, even if you couldn't hear those stories. So you could believe that the world didn't just stop existing after the game was over.
There's a reason why the Paper abilities in the second game where called "curses".
Because the paper thing was a joke between Nintendo and the Player. To the characters, everything was real.
But now the art style is inseperable from the game, and the paper thing is a joke between the characters and the player, not nintendo and the player.
A couple of fourth wall breaking jokes are fine, but at a certain point it just becomes a farce.
This wouldn't be so bad if this was its own series, but no, these games have replaced the old ones. Retconned them, their worlds and their characters out of existence.
It's not that the old games were just retired, their legacy is being painted over. At least that's what it feels like.
That's what makes fans like me so bitter. It doesn't feel like the new Paper Marios respect their legacy. It feels like they just want us to forget about it.
Because Nintendo probably wants us to forget about it, judging by Tanabe's comments about his orders to keep the series within some very strict limits.
Whoever made the decision not to give Toads age, gender or body types and all that probably doesn't like that the old games even exist. Who knows if Nintendo will ever remake those games.
It's all just so sad when you have so much love for a series, but Nintendo clearly thinks other things are more important. Whether it's brand recognition or copyright issues.

This is literally the perfect comment. It's exactly how I feel about the games now.
These games look like they could be fun if they had their own identity, but the fact its replacing what I loved hurts.

    • @ShyGuyXXL
      @ShyGuyXXL Před 3 lety

@Kameron Goree I already said, it's NOT the art style that is the problem. It's the in-universe identity of the characters and their world.
I miss the worldbuilding, the believable characters living believable lives in a believable world. In the old games the paper gimmick did not get in the way of those things.
In the new games, when Paper Mario literally gets cut to shreds, I can't take it seriously because it's a joke. "Haha, get it? He got cut up like paper because he IS paper! Haha."
Because the entire game is a joke.
If the game never takes itself seriously, how am I supposed to take IT seriously?
Even the Bobby scene, (you know, THE Bobby scene?) I couldn't take it seriously because the game not only REFUSES to give him his own identity, but it even makes fun of the people who want him to have a unique identity.
I wouldn't even be mad if this was its own series, but it's the fact that this REPLACES the old style that's so painful. And we'll probably never see it again.
Mario & Luigi is dead now too, and if Tanabe's statements are anything to go by, then even if it ever got revived, it'll just be bland and generic as well.
Of course there are other RPGs out there. But that doesn't change that we lost 2 great RPG series.

As much as I agree with everything else you say here, I have to correct one little thing:
Despite having a level based system, Color Splash actually had backtracking just like Origami King had. Places change after you "solved the mystery" or "finished" the level and you even have to go back to earlier levels after you free certain characters to progress in them.
Aside from that small detail, this was a great video :)
Edit: Btw. I absolutely loved Color Splash and for me personally, it's almost on equal footing with Origami King, so I can definitely recommend checking it out.

I haven't played the game but the story is what I like especially the ending so spoilers ahead.
Even after olly caused so much chaos, damage, and pain because of the love of his sister he did one final good deed that I don't know if it redeemed him but it was something good.
He sacrificed himself so that everything for the most part could be brought back to normal.
With all the things going on with people being called out on bad behavior this ending resonates with me.
Someone who has been led astray and has motives that were misplaced and didn't honor the person he was trying too.
But in the end because of his sister Olivia and his love for her he changed in his last moments to try and fix the mess he made.
While I personally don't think this automatically makes him redeemed its an overall beautiful scene.
For me before February I was different.
I got into arguments and couldn't even say how much I cared for my aunty and was upset over small things then she had left then passed away shortly.
That was last year and even all the way up until January I was finally set straight and have been trying to fight the wrongs of my past and be a better person.
I'm a flawed human and all I really want to do is make people laugh.
Olly changed because he loves his sister and wanted to fix the mistakes he made.
It adds another layer to a character who could have been mistaken for a one note villian.
The concept of origami itself in a paper Mario game was quite an interesting and fun one and I think the game is personally beautiful.
    That's just my opinion anyway.
For me things like this are relatable and never fails to get a tear out of me.
Maybe I'm looking too into it but I liked it.

Honestly, Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door was a kind of a slog on repeat playthroughs also. I can excuse Chapter 4 backtracking but Chapter 7 literally having going on a fetchquest across the entire map for one npc. Chapter 3 is an enemy rush which is fun the first time, boring every other time, and chapter 6 while great on the first playthrough, really lost it's luster on the next. I say I rather play the og Paper Mario than Thousand Year Door which has barely any fluff and has better design dungeons overrall in my eyes.

This is why it always bothers me when people talk about the "squandered" potential of the crossover when in reality including all of these original characters from both series would've lead to character bloat and most likely an overall messy story. They couldn't even find a way to incorporate the paper world as it proved to overcomplicate things. I personally think it was a good idea to focus on the main cast, as it keeps the story simple but focused.
