Super Mario 3D All-Stars Review Retrospective Critique KingK - Hry
I feel like some people are confused about this, but to be clear: the ONLY reason I bought this is because I was making a video on it and wanted to be accurate. I wanted to make sure that I played the official version of the game and noted all of its problems. Otherwise, I most certainly would not have bought it. Even said as much pre-release, before I thought about writing a script.
I've never understood the whole "You're supporting this by buying it, so your opinion is invalid" argument. You probably cost Nintendo way more than the $60 you spent on this game by releasing this video to 178k subs. Imagine the thousands or even millions of dollars Nintendo's lost from even a fraction of those subs not buying the game. Hell, even for those without such a huge influence, it only takes convincing 1 other person to not buy it to break even, and 2 to put Nintendo in the red.
@@cubedmelons876 if you honestly think nintendo is losing money because of this video you're very silly
@@HNfilms And how would they not be? It's a channel that covers a lot of Nintendo games, so it's pretty reasonable to expect that at least some of them were at least thinking of buying the collection. Some of those people might have even been convinced by this video to get these games elsewhere. Therefore, Nintendo would lose their sales.
@@cubedmelons876 the amount would be so tiny that nintendo wouldn't even notice. sadly, the collection has sold like hot cakes so we're definitely going to keep getting lazy money grabbing products
@@HNfilms I'm not arguing that he necessarily needs to convince a lot of people here. This is more directed at those people who are like "You bought the game, so you're still supporting them." If even just 2 people were convinced by this video to not buy the game, then he's technically done more harm than good to Nintendo with his purchase.

Can’t wait for the Zelda 3D collection where they forget Majora’s Mask and don’t give Ocarina widescreen
They've already made so many zelda remakes. The only ones I can think of are the original, zelda II, and link to the past, which are all already on the nes and SNES apps o. Switch
They need to make a dark version of Zelda 2, with current gen graphics, thats all i want
Wow now that really puts it in perspective, we draw the line now before it gets there
We can't let that happen
Duncan McCall But the WiiU remakes weren’t really accessible to the Nintendo fans who skipped out on the WiiU. I think WWHD and TPHD are definitely still worth releasing on the Switch, but I’d hope at a reduced price.
I don't know who said it, but someone described this package as "a collection of great games, but not a great collection of games", and that's honestly pretty accurate.
The truth is: Miyamoto is retired, and he's the fuel of inspiration for new Mario ideas. He doesn't want his brain child to be defiled. He's not technically retired, but he's old af, and the only reason he hasn't retired is to keep another Rayman or Sonic collaboration from happening again. He's a fucking out-of-touch boomer, but the 30-40yo pants-pooping Nintendo simps worship him like a god. He's not fucking infinite in wisdom, he's capitalizing on your nostalgia because he doesn't respect you degenerates.
Yep
This is all subjective. Of course. In my opinion. These are a great collection of games. Well at least two of them are. I don’t particularly care for Super Mario sunshine.
@@Adamtendo_player_1you didn’t understand the comment
@@Adamtendo_player_1i don't cares for Super Mario 64, yet, here we are..
The DS version was better.
I never understand the mentality of “well you bought it so you can’t complain”. Like, if you buy a sandwich and it tastes terrible are you not allowed to complain about it because you bought and consumed it?
This is exactly what game reviewers are for. They're supposed to get the game, then shit on it if it's bad and praise it if it's good, so potential customers will know if they should buy it or not.
@@astral-p1823 Yup and instead, game reviewers have almost always taken the role of marketing/PR for the company in question, because their business depends on being given review copies and companies nowadays tend to blacklist unfavourable reviewers.
I get what you’re saying but it’s not quite a fair comparison. If you KNEW the sandwich was bad before you bought it, that’s on you. Most people knew the quality of this game (myself included) and bought it anyway. It’s convenient to be able to play those 3 games easily. But they needed love lol
I mean(excluding people or youtubers with mob mentality just shitting on games for views or because it's cool) people wouldn't have been able to make their judgements on games if they haven't bought it in the first place as the scapegoat. So I never got the logic of that argument just because someone bought the game. He'll if anything buying and reviewing it is just to let the word be known like how avgn does.
@@astral-p1823 Altough it can and it will backfire specially if they shit on a game that is actually good and overrate something that is not worth the effort

2004 when Mario 64 wasn't even 10 years old yet: Let's remake all of 64, new characters, new levels and bosses, mini games and multiplayer stuff
2020: uhhh why would you want widescreen
What hurts even more is that the boot up screen has 64 in widescreen
Caynon Artibee lol that’s gross.
couldn't have put it better
Yeh I would have loved 64 DS on this collection and probably would have bought it then. That game's problem was the DS control pad. Plus, I would have loved playing the minigames in it online with friends, though that may have been tricky to port.
@Shaman Xeed I really do not care
Nintendo doesn't show much love or respect for their classics. Yet they cry about piracy which has better emulation then their current ports and attack fan projects.
8:47 "What If you're left handed?"
FUCKING FINALLY SOMEONE NOTICES ME!
And this is why the wiimote was better.
You can use it easily as a left-handed player.
Unlike the joycon..
When I was a kid they came out with the Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition. It had OG Zelda, Zelda II, Ocarina of Time, AND Majora's Mask all in one disc. In 2003. If you told me we wouldn't get something better than that in 17 *years* I wouldn't believe you.
Don't forget the 20 minute demo of Wind Waker, as well as the montage of the games up until that point
What's funny is that that collection didn't have A Link to the Past, what could've been considered the best Zelda game up until OoT. When it was brought up how modern Nintendo would be willing to omit games for no reason, that immediately came to mind; they've already done it.
That's exactly the game I thought of when KingK said, "Nintendo has never shown that level of effort in their collections before, have they?"
That game was a huge chunk of my childhood; I still remember how I got nightmares from playing Majora's Mask (a game that incidentally was actually made from Aonuma's nightmares and daydreams).
Tbf the Majora's Mask emulation was kinda crap, game would crash all the time
I’d just like to point out that the MM emulation was garbage, barely playable. Aside from that, it is sad that we haven’t gotten anything better than that though.

Gonna toss a theory up there.
Nintendo hadn’t actually planned 3D Allstars. They saw the rumors, realized people were expecting it for the anniversary, and so quickly threw something together.
I mean the only new assets are hud and message textures and button updates, they couldn’t even revoice Fludd’s tutorial, so hilariously you hear “Hold the ..... button to run and shoot water.” And stuff like that. It would make sense
@@robertlauncher makes sense. I know the same wont happen with zelda because they treat that better than Mario
Yea, I honestly think so too.
I definitely think that’s true especially since this isn’t the way Nintendo would treat their popular characters
... Considering the rumors came out of nowhere in the first place, just because a random "trustworthy" source on some random forum on the internet said something, and that the whole product could have been made in less than a week...
You are probably right
The real reason why the collection is pathetic: “So long gay bowser” is out of the game

Just know I’m not trying to devalue your argument. I have the privilege of living in a country with a really good economy, so I understand pricing does not effect me as much. The same company who REMADE Mario 64 on a DS in 2004.
8:48 "So... what if you're left-handed?" As a left-handed Nintendo fan, I'm rather tired of almost always being forgotten. I remember Spirit Tracks on the DS asking if the player's left-handed or right-handed and I'm convinced that that game's the outlier! Skyward Sword on its release was a brand new gyro-heavy game that had five years of development, and there was no option to play it left-handed, *in a series where the protagonist up until that point had always been left-handed!* I don't understand Nintendo's mindset towards the left-handed at all, especially since Shigeru Miyamoto himself is left-handed!
Mario and Luigi Dream Team had the option for left handed people but then regressed in the Bowser Inside Story to just being right handed. I'm glad that I have some type of weird selective ambidextrousness or Skyward Sword would have been unplayable.
I’m left handed too and it sucks, so many games just become unplayable. I remember trying to play pikmin 3 on the Wii U but I just couldn’t.
Matthew St. Cyr I’m left handed, and it really is a pain. I try to manage, but I agree, more games need left handed options
Personally I think the worst example of this was Kid Icarus Uprising... it'd probably be one of my favorite games ever if I could ACTUALLY play it
I feel so lucky to be right-handed in a right-handed world.

@@TheRealUnkn0wn_289 its either have alot of great indies or virtual console both cant be on the eshop
For a company that hates emulators so much, they're doing a pretty damn good job at making sure emulating their games remains the best (and for an embarrassing amount of games, the only) way to play many, many of their older games. The Virtual Console concept has been around since 2006 and at no point in any of its iterations (including its most recent form where it's tied to a monthly subscription) did they ever offer Gamecube games. And of course the one time they decide to rerelease Sunshine, it's tied to a half-assed anniversary collection that costs $60...
EDIT: A good personal example, I lost my personal copy of Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. I no longer even have a Gamecube controller to play it on my Wii. And of course Nintendo never rereleased it on anything, so literally the only way I can play it is through emulation. Guess you didn't need my money after all, Nintendo.
I'm making a 90s/2000s nostalgia room, so I already have an old setup anyway. But TTYD is NOTORIOUS for being one of the hardest Nintendo games to actually be able to play. If you didn't already have everything it'd run you a pretty penny. A vintage TV set, a Gamecube, the controller, a memory card, the cables and cords, and then the copy of the game itself, which will set you back about $125. Ridiculous
Hate emulators? They rely on emulators. Nintendo is incapable of reworking old games to run on new hardware. They put all of their resources into developing new games. Developers are not allowed to make an old game better because that would diminish the eBay value of the original. They have a hardware division that would be useless if not for making you spend a paycheck on an add-on that allows backwards compatibility to play fucking OG Gameboy games.
so apparently they FINALLY got around to re releasing it 20 years after the original. i do not have any faith it will be good

There's one thing that's really been bothering me recently about 3D all stars. Just recently (by the time I'm posting this anyway), Sakurai released a trailer and explanation for Steve from minecraft joining smash bros ultimate. In it, it showed how Steve has an entirely new gameplay style never before seen with any fighter in the game, while cramming as much Minecraft love into it, 6 brand new remixes of Minecraft songs, a brand new stage that looks like it was pulled straight out of Minecraft which also has 6 different forms/biomes, and sakurai explained how they had to rework EVERY STAGE IN THE GAME so it would work and make sense for Steve, all for $5.99. Sakurai and his team most likely put more time, effort, stuff, and love into one $6 dlc pack for a game, than Nintendo has with making a collection of 3 Mario games for $60. That's honestly really really sad.
Edit: You could write anything in the CZcams comment section with some sort of opinion in it, and there will always be those kind of people trying their damndest to start an argument
Edit 2: Please don't read the replies
Most likely? Guaranteed.
Sakurai puts a ton of effort into his games, a lot more than many devs at Nintendo seem to.
One thing I didn’t like about Steve though is the music choice was dogshit. Yes minecraft tracks would be hard to remix to be fighting music, but you did it with pikmin. And even tracks that COULD work like pigstep are just not used. Instead, here are 7 tracks from spinoffs you probably haven’t played. There are many fanmade remixes of minecraft songs that you could definitely fight to, or hell maybe even put in the original Sweden just for history’s sake. Otherwise, sublime. They were really faithful with the moveset, stage, everything. The music section was sadly not given that
Well, that's why a lot of people love Sakurai. He's a glimmer of hope ^^
that's honestly true....although I wouldn't expect full remakes they could have put more effort into it...although I do consider "sakurai's team"as part of nintendo though

18:28 This is a very important distinction to make: Nintendo, the game maker and Nintendo, the corporation. As someone who worked in studios before, I can assure you that many designers and developers at (or associated with) Nintendo are probably not happy with these decisions either. They would love to give these games a proper HD remake akin to OoT3D/MM3D or WWHD.
The worst part of this is that Nintendo knew that they could get away with this
I mean, you're not wrong. Hell, they ensured they would get away with this by making it a limited release...I pre-ordered two copies the day it was announced.
I think we should create a name for the psychology behind this. I think the Fallout Fallacy sounds like a good name for the concept of using a popular and well-known name, like Fallout, to make an individual blindly trust the quality of a product being sold, therefore misleading the consumer into buying a low quality product.

"Piracy is almost always a service problem and not a pricing problem. If a pirate offers a product anywhere in the world, 24 x 7, purchasable from the convenience of your personal computer, and the legal provider says the product is region-locked, will come to your country 3 months after the US release, and can only be purchased at a brick and mortar store, then the pirate's service is more valuable."
- Gabe Newell
GabeN is a legend for a reason.
Yep. If they actually released their older games more often and didn't half-ass their ports, people might be less willing to pirate them.
In Nintendo's case it's both. The Eshop is a steaming pile of dogshit and the games are so eyewateringly expensive for old games, some being that they came out almost a decade ago.
Wow

Woah woah woah wait. They’ve been DELISTING games they’ve ported over to the Switch?? What the fuck, and now they’re closing the Wii U/3DS eshops this year
I'd cite the Smash Bros series as the perfect example of what game collections should strive to be. The Smash Bros games are completely original content and shouldn't have any obligation to be anything other than a great fighting game, yet they still always manage to cram in an extensive collection of trailers, music, sound effects, trophies and stickers, etc. Hell, Brawl even had playable demos of NES games. I get the impulse of defending Nintendo. I was against KingK at this video's premise, and only came around due to the presented evidence. Sad as it is, there doesn't seem to be much in the way of widespread, accessible conversations about preserving legacy in gaming. Those I DO see are either extremely niche, pertaining to specific games or series with cult followings, or are extremely technical/philosophical and alienate more casual gamers (which is how I'd describe myself and many of the people I know).
I'm open to suggestions for other videos/articles on the topic, but to date this is the best video I have seen on the topic, and as a result I understand how it would be a tough sell for ANYONE in a medium as limited as a Reddit post.

To be fair, the Kirby developers at HAL Laboratory always take special care to honor the franchise's legacy in each new installment, and clearly hold him in very high regard. While Nintendo's in-house developers aren't new to shoddy mario collections. All Stars on Wii was just a straight port of the SNES game.
It’s obvious that Nintendo is a company split between creative mind and board room executives. Iwata used to be the link between the two but with him gone the disconnect has only grown even more. Because a random fan is passionate about this project, but for Nintendo it's a business practice. So why pump lots of money and time into making these versions the optimal version we've all been waiting for, when the casual player will buy it just as much and probably won't notice the things pointed out in the video? This is not meant to rag on fans, not by any means, but a lot of people will not realize things like frames, screen ratio, button remapping, etc. This, I think, only shows how Nintendo banks a lot of their products on their customers lack of knowledge, and honestly, this feels like they take advantage of them.

I bought Allstars (and have only played some of Mario 64) and SSHD (I actually did love playing this in spite of some of the port issues), but the fact that they haven't even acknowledged Zelda's 35th anniversary as of November, and THEN they have the balls to do their horrendous expansion pack service for a crappy emulator of two of my favorite Zelda games of all time (not to mention that Mario 64 game that I got ripped off over knowingly, my fault)?
I've since jumped ship and am using a 3DS emulator to play OOT and MM since Nintendo was too cheap to do the right thing and not screw their fans over. They could've just sold the N64 titles on the eshop and I would've been alright with that, but they'd prefer to be the least consumer friendly game company on earth (yeah, I hate Nintendo more than EA, at least EA fixed BF2.)
Nintendo had my loyalty and trust, and now both are gone. Absolutely shameful.
