      why should there be? most, if not all, delegates are speedcubers, and like making progress and breaking their records at comps. if they are the sole delegate at a competition, and no one else is experienced or even has the credentials to access the tnoodle software to generate them (which is what is required for generating scrambles for official wca comps), how would it even be possible to have the scrambles for the comp if the delegate cant generate them. or are you saying delegates shouldn't be able to compete at all at comps they are delegating at? that is a bit more reasonable, but still doesn't make sense since delegating is a thankless job and a volunteer work, so you don't get paid, yet they are expected to go to all of these competitions month after month without ever competing in them? 50% of the reason people go to comps IS to compete in them and get good results. and a good chunk of delegates are really competitive, a lot of them regularly breaking world records. it seems difficult and tricky to implement it, but i don't disagree with you. there is just a lot more nuance than you might give it credit for

    • @cuberstache
      @cuberstache Před 2 dny +80

      People have to go through a process before becoming delegates, which involves being trusted by other delegates, so theoretically only trustworthy people are able to do this. Also, it's usually the case that a delegate not competing in FMC generates the scrambles, but sometimes this isn't possible, as in the case of the competitions where Kalindu was the only delegate. He was the only Sri Lankan delegate, so there was no one else able to generate scrambles.

    One thing to ads about why speedcubing doesn't optimize for fewest moves: it's not just that it's difficult to find the fewest moves solution, but it would be pointless to do so anyway. Speedcubing relies heavily on algorithms, which sre sequences of moves players learn by heart and develop muscle memory for. You'd much rather execute a sequence of 10 moves you've done literally tens of thoudands of times before and can do it almost instantly versus a 5 move sequence that you've never executed before and would consequently take you longer to do.

      @robotoboy30 Před 2 dny +65

      @@mrosskne When it comes to WR's videogame speedrunning is done live in 90% of cases. It's just usually done over a stream or something. The reason for this usually amounts to logistics and the sheer number of variables. Things like speedcubing are much easier to organize, monitor and provide supplies and support for.
      In videogames it's a lot more complicated. Something GDQ provides materials for speedrunners, but they can't provide a ton of systems, within a stable and standardized environment very easily. Older consoles often either need a CRT, or to be modded to work with HDMI, or to use a converter - the last two introduce lag. Another thing is that these older consoles are getting up there in age. Yes most all older games are speedran on real authentic hardware - but some emulated speedruns are allowed (emulation introduces yet again more latency, PLUS the unintended side effect of varying inaccurate clockspeeds, and even bugs or glitches that don't exist with original hardware).
      The other thing to keep in mind is that physical media has also began to deteriorate, or become "collectors items" making it difficult to provide an adequate amount of software to a large number of competitors. Organizers could create their own flashcarts (the tech is relatively easy and accessible now) but may receive legal correspondence from the related publishers, and companies that own the IP (looking at you Nintendo)
      GDQ can provide a limited amount of hardware and software thanks to either donations, or loans from people who are gracious enough to help.
      Essentially the idea is that it becomes too expensive, and difficult to organize and run massive live competitions for things like WR's. So a happy medium is streaming those attempts and having the competitor provide their own equipment. Now you might argue that they could provide their own equipment at the live event - which IS fair, but again I will reiterate that the value of the items needed can vary to sometimes quite ludicrous numbers. This makes taking your equipment with you risky, and keep in mind... some of these items are actually pretty rare too - making it difficult for the competitor to replace in some circumstances.
      The logistics are just way to all over the place to effectively organize and run live events for speedrunning.
      We've come a long way in cheat detection with streaming too. People can find splices, discrepancies with input detection - and more. So ironically the answer is basically:
      It's complicated.

      Some games have RNG mechanics, some require perfect movement, some can even crash midrun. Imagine trying to organize actual competitions for games that require thousands of tries until a new WR is set. Are the runners supposed to do it first try? or can they reset until they get a decent run? maybe a time limit? Hell no. No WRs would be set this way.

      If that wasn't possible, many competitions wouldn't happen at all. Remember that the WCA is a volunteer organisation, and that almost all delegates are cubers themselves (many are particularly interested in FMC as well). For them, getting to compete and break their own records is a good incentive to host more comps. Becoming a delegate also involves other delegates trusting you and recommending you to the wca as a potential new delegate.
      Simply banning delegates from competing at their own comps seems like an easy solution, but it's really not that simple.

      @@SquallLeonE I play VGC which is the competitive format of the switch games (currently Scarlet & Violet). The benefits you would get are immense. We play Open team sheet format. That means that at the beginning of the match, you get a list that contains all the Pokémon on your opponent's team including items, tera types and moves. If you could participate in your own tournaments you would be able to make a plan way in advance when during a regular match the only preparation time you get is the in-game team selection screen which gives you 90 seconds to think.
      But that is not even the biggest advantage. As the organizer you receive what is called the closed team sheet from every player. That team sheet contains all the data that is in the open team sheet PLUS all the stats of your Pokémon. One of the biggest skills in Pokémon VGC is gathering information about your opponent's team and hiding as much information as possible about your own team. Having access to the closed team sheet would eliminate that entire aspect as you would already know how your opponent's Pokémon are trained. You would know, which Pokémon outspeeds which, you could calculate whether you can one-hit KO certain Pokémon on your opponent's team or which moves your own Pokémon can survive and so on. You could basically play hyper-aggressive without risking anything as you already know all the information you need whereas your opponent needs to play conservatively and passive.

    Take YuGiOh for instance, as a judge I basically say "I will not play in this tournament" whenever I opt to judge. Now YGO isn't as cheatable by a judge/organizer as a rubik's cube tournament--I don't randomize player's decks for them--but this concept is why it's a thing.

    tl;dr: banger video
    I'm a WCA Delegate myself, and I want to say this video is insanely well-researched and accurate, especially being a cubing doc created by someone outside the space. Karl did a great job reaching out to Noah, showing the WDC report and discord screenshots.
    I do want to add that while officials competing is inherently risky, there are protocols in place to prevent anything like this happening. The WCA Code of Ethics and Scramble Accountability Policy are both public online, and all delegates are required to follow these rules throughout the course of our duties.
    In a large majority of cases, WCA delegates are trustworthy and do not provide ourselves an unfair advantage in competitions, in accordance with the Code of Ethics, but it is unfortunate that Sri Lanka's only delegate ended up violating this code so flagrantly. Hopefully they can find another delegate soon.
    Edit: love all the people who have no idea about the culture of cubing and the WCA coming in thinking they're experts on the subject, thanks for your input 🤡

    • @VicJang
      @VicJang Před 2 dny +5

      The fact that he’s the only delegate in Sri Lanka is the reason why this was allowed to happen. Perhaps WCA should implement certain rule such as minimum required delegates for each competition if the delegate themself choose to compete.
      I know it wouldn’t be easy especially in countries where cubing isn’t popular yet. (I started cubing in 2005 so I am fully aware how difficult it is to get started with a small community.) But yeah, it’s unfortunate.

    • @Jj82op
      @Jj82op Před 2 dny +1

      And any competitor is free to file a report if something suspicious was happening with a justified reason, I assume.
      So of course delegates go through a full process before becoming one, but how about the idea of competitors taking official tests for Judges and Scramblers during competitions and having some kind of certification? It's fine if experienced competitors are volunteering but there can still be inconsistencies. I recently had an experience about a dozen volunteers who were not cubers at all but members of a church where the competition was held, and they were "trained" a day earlier. It was a bit of a struggle, it shouldn't be that way.

    • @mb2776

    • @youtube-kit9450
      @youtube-kit9450 Před 2 dny +4

      And as we saw, the protocols go by the honour system and mean jack sh*t if someone wants to cheat. Hence why any normal community has such a very basic principle as "the judge/similar position of an event doesn't participate in it", which is baffling how speedcubers are so adamant against it.
      Also, this whole nonsense could be solved by just making becoming a delegate much easier so your entire country isn't in the hand of one guy, which seems asinine in the first place.

At least chess still has the PvP element of reading your opponent, but it largely comes down to guessing what pre-established strategy they'll employ. Just not all that interested in either, but that's doubly so for top level competition. The fun of a Rubik's cube (imo) is figuring it out for yourself. That's where your mind is really tested. Memorizing algorithms takes away all the discovery.
