- What does 9 feet of storm surge look like? We show you like nobody else can. This was the forecast storm surge for the Carolina coast as Hurricane Florence was approaching.
* Forecast data from Sept 12th at 5:00 PM (ET)*
The person who made those graphics deserves a raise. That was great.

The visualization is incredible. A clear, frightening way to show how dangerous this situation is!

Fun fact: those graphics were made with Unreal engine 4 the same graphical engine that powers PUBG and Fortnite
How do you know?
@@jeremyquentin42 Nvidia posted an article on it. They're using Nvidia GPUs and Unreal engine to render that stuff in real time.
Im pretty surprised that was UR 4. Although they look good, they didn't look great compared to some of the other visuals ive seen UR4 render. I guess they weren't going to toss a million dollars in rendering it, but that is def not UR 4's potential.
then again, rendering water has to be hard as shit
Eh? What's a "PUBG" or a "Fortnite"?
Are those video games perchance? Or software for creating the like?
weather man appears to be moses... please gather round for safety
It was not Moses who split the sea, it was God through Moses
Just sayin
These visuals are great. Please do this more often. Some people wouldn't think 3ft is that dangerous, but this really shows how damaging 3ft can be.
Better graphics than some of the CGI in Jurassic World tbh.
Very impressive graphics. Fair play to whoever put that together....top of the range artist.
fair play?

Looked like a video game, no biggie.

Wow! That's the best visual I've ever seen! I hope you are wrong, But I fear the body count is going to be high & the cleanup massive. So many are staying to protect their property. What good will all those things be if they end up dead trying to protect their stuff? PRIORITIES people PRIORITIES to stay alive should override anything else. GET OUT WHILE YOU CAN!
Agree. Unfortunately, not everyone can just afford to pick up and leave and get alternative accommodation elsewhere, leave their jobs etc. Plus I think people overestimate their ability to weather such storms.
Frank Rizzo- the public buses are taking people inland to the evac shelters 150 miles away. I'm sure if they don't have the $ for a bus ticket, no one is gonna deny them a ride to a safe place. People seem to think it's all an illusion or some kind of a government scam plan. Weather is as unpredictable as unpredictable gets!
More than one million people heeded the advise and got out early. The Govenor and his team reversed both southbound lanes of interstate 26, thus giving four lanes of highway to move people through. I 26 is the only interstate coming up from the Lowlands shore areas. Contrary to your statement, the majority of the coastlines are ghost towns. A tiny number stayed, yes, but in the double digits. I live 4 hours inland from the Charleston area. I live 5.5 hours inland from the Wilmington area. We have had close to a week to watch this storm develop. When the governor of south Carolina orders a MANDATORY evacuation 4 days ahead of anticipated landfall?....you decide: ego vs logic. Logic has won.
wynnie k- My morning news tells a different story. Seems the rescues are above the 2 digit mark. Seems so many had no funds to leave or could not due to health conditions & just not enough warning information that they could easily understand. Happy to hear so many did get out, but unhappy to hear the first responders will be working overtime on this one!
@@sherrydee7880 well your morning new are bullshit
This is an excellent visual and will make things clear for a lot of people.
The storm is awful. But may I just say, this visualization was INCREDIBLE. The graphics creator or team deserves special recognition and a serious raise. I am sharing this. I think people do not understand just how deep 3ft-9ft + is and I deeply appreciate you showing this.
Those visual just looking at the scared the living shit outta me
Hopefully people use their brains and get out while they can, items can be repurchased and rebuilt but your life and the lives of your family cannot.
The Safest place in a Hurricane is the Grey Circle
this specific 3d graphic spawned a years long weather addiction. i was actually just talking about it the other day. here it is, in my recommended. pure childhood joy right here.
What a great visual representation of a real danger. Thank you!
Fantastic use of an AR-type visualization, really drives home the actual impact of the storm, what the rising water can really mean. I'll be watching more.
If you are thinking about the graphics The Weather Channel used is Unreal Engine 4 the Engine Epic Games has.
Cringe Central *made
I need this program in my life! Frfr!!
Excellent visualization of water rising. Thank you!

Wow....this is incredible....and perfect for people who have never experienced a potentially "catastrophic" storm event. It's pretty amazing to see some of the "comments" of people who "clearly" haven't experienced the before and after. As a Hugo survivor, my life was changed in a really short period of time. Back in 1989, 9/22 to be exact, we weren't as advanced on the potential devastation of a storm. It can be totally life changing. I had customers living on Pawley's Island who had nothing but their suitcases left. Mother Nature is not something to be reckoned with. Yeah, it might be inconvenient....but being safe rather than sorry is my motto after Hugo's wrath.
Like many said, THESE graphics should be shown on every channel, so ppl do the right thing and LEAVE!
God bless you all from Sweden!
That’s pretty awesome news! I would watch that all the time
That was awesome and informative, I hope the Weather Channel keeps making videos like this for all types of natural disasters.
Amazing footage 😳 very scary
Footage that was a simulation.
This is a scary video, but very informative. Thank you so much for posting.
I hope you're giving your special effects guys a raise, they outdid basically anything you've ever shown before with this.
love the 3D
I love the weather channel

Me too.
Its become a weather themed soap opera
These explainers from The Weather Channel are really pushing the boundaries of live immersive broadcasting. The Future Group who create the graphics are using Mo-Sys StarTracker, a real-time camera tracking system that has made this is all possible.
You left out it was made with the Unreal Engine 4.
Anyone who put a thumbs down to this, must really have no clue. We endured Hurricane Harvey. We evacuated and came back to find utter devastation. Waterlines and grass lines on fences and buildings were unbelievable. They are not kidding with these graphics.
Cool graphics. Really effective at making the point.
Should of showed this to the people who stayed behind.
Rainbow Panda they wouldn’t have listened any way
'Should have' maybe? Reading your comment hurt my brain.
Mouth completely dropped with the visual and straight spooked me! I went looking for a visual on storm surges and this vid did just that! Great information! To those staying , please PLEASE LEAVE IF U CAN! My church familia and myself will CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR U ALL 🙏🏼

Well done on that visual! It really brings home the full realization of the dangers of flash-floods and storm surges for folks who aren't intimately familiar. This is my first time seeing such visuals and I commend you on this effort. Once again, well done folks!
You find this link in the graphics guy’s resume.
Came back to this video because of Hurricane Ian’s predicted 10ft storm surge.
Same here. My apartment is right on the water and we are very worried for what's to come. We have evacuated but are still worried.
This is the best depiction of just how massive these storms can be, but yet you'll still have those individuals that say: "I'm gonna ride this out." God bless them.
Give those graphics artists a bonus check. This is hands down the best visualization I've seen to show how dangerous these surges are. Loving the sfx blips too. A great touch.
This is how Ants feel when you water the garden..
DLC package for Storm Surge will include the rest of the wall. Complimentary evacuation handouts will be included. $34.99
A great visual explanation of what all the flood numbers mean and how dangerous for people in those areas.
Great just job as always, TWC! As a lifelong Gulf Coast resident, you’ve always been there for us. You keep a good eye on Jim Cantore for us!
That's very impressive. Great way to showcase the intensity of what's happening out there. Kudos to the team that came up with this tech.
And still 150 people are trapped on roofs. Even with such a strong demonstration you have peopl that wont heed warning
Scarier even more than I could imagine. We are getting hit hard. Praying for all along with my family that are in the path of this monster.
This is AMAZING - thank you for making such a helpful visual presentation. Anyone who hasn't seen flooding up close just can't imagine. I could show you a picture of a flood we had in my area. Street filled, water across our lawn...wouldn't mean much to anyone looking at it. But when I show you the same pic, with my husband standing in the middle of the street in chest deep water? Now that's more helpful. Seriously well done!
I hope people dont leave their dogs to die free or tied up like they did in Texas.. Cats dogs horses ect abandoned most drowned skimming for hours before being tontired and drown or swept away trapped in houses on chains etc.
irene todd disgusting, I'd never leave my dog behind.
I don't know about the people who already have animals, but there were several shelters arranging for families who were evacuating to foster dogs and cats while they evacuated to help get animals out side the flood and storm surge zones.
@@dianebaugher3768 I live in Texas and it was horrible there was many stories of pets that had been left chained up next. Some were rescued.. It was so sad I would never leave my babies.
@@MyrnaandRita that is good but theire are always those selfish people that shouldnt have a pet to begin with.
Yeah, well, that's life. Hoping those things don't happen is great. But there are ways to make a change that are much more successful than just sitting behind your computer and hoping. Find organizations that help animals during natural disasters and those that expand their rescue efforts to animals and donate. Then post links to those organizations on your social media and spread the word and try to get it in front of the people who need the help - because sometimes the dogs/cats/animals are left behind because the family literally doesn't know who to turn to for help and they are in the middle of a panic situation and aren't thinking clearly. You can't change the small number of shitty people out there that do terrible things on purpose. But you can help the people who don't know what to do or how to save their pets when the choice is "do I save my kid or my pet?". It seems ridiculous, but sometimes that's the kind of choice that they think they have to make and so they leave their pet behind. It's very easy to judge these situations when you are not in them. But people are only human. All we can ask of them is to do their best and help point them towards resources that can help them do that.
One such organization is the Cajun Navy. They are an ad hoc rescue group of private boat owners who tiller around flood areas saving both people and pets who didn't have the means or ability to leave the flood zones.
Woah
This visual and explanation is amazing. Other than being a complete internet troll, I have no idea why someone would dislike this video!
The graphics are just amazing! This video must go viral so people can realize how dangerous the situation is!!
Cool
settle down, Moses
this is scary, yet very informative. Wonderful!
I cannot stop watching this
the person who did those graphics should’ve worked on Black Ops 4
I agree
Someone have miss dolly from Carolina Beach, NC watch this video before its to late for her to evacuate...
It's not only the graphics that made this really cool, but also the sound effects. Excellent!
I dont know whose vision was this and who put it together but brilliant and very informative usage of tech. I really would love to see more. Awesome work, thank you.

Unreal Engine 4.
I'd say the most interestingly difficult part of that graphic, is probably animating the cars floating and trees blowing, it takes some time to animate mesh like that, course, unless the wind was automated.
Incredible use of CG to better represent the danger of such storm. Incredible work, this piece must win prizes!
You guys are really giving CNN a run for its money! 😂
What's cooking in the geoengineering kitchen today??
Currently on the menu we have catastrophic flooding, volcanic eruptions, magnitude 6.0+ earthquakes and huge wildfires. I don't know about you but I'll take an order of volcanic eruptions with a side of landslides. Lol
This is mind-boggling. Never thought 3feet could be that dangerous.
Byron Allen is up'ing the game and knocking it out of the park after purchasing The Weather Channel! Great Job!
I think they are lying about the rainfall in are going to say that it was the rainfall that flooded everybody else when they are going to break a damn or something
Jim Costigan clears up some real estate for the elites!
I don't think y'all realize there's Military bases all over NC and where going to hit why would they risk equipment for "personal gain" yea lets harm the marine corps and such so we can weaken our national defense and lose money in the process
What ?
What an inane response …..

This graphic really helped to clarify the dangers pending for the East coast. I am now taking this hurricane a lot more seriously.
I’m so glad I saw this... because I didn’t think 3 ft is serious.. thanks for putting this vision together

There is no god, so stupid to pray for a hobgoblin
You guys just don’t care about hurricane Florence 😢😢😢
Sure I care. I'm thrilled to see what happens! Hopefully no-one dies or loses a home. Bug praying is... medieval.
How about a dislike?
Just as fake as Mike Seidel, congratulations Weather Channel you have joined the likes of CNN
I used to like them. Now the people know they are fake news.

Wow, that was really good visuals on what to expect! Thank you for your knowledge.
What an AWESOME graphic effect!!!!! - Definitely made these numbers connect more with actual visuals to give a real sense of the danger involved in these storms...STAY SAFE NC & SC!!
Weather Channel, I hate where some things have gone with you over the years, but damn you have some good informational videos.
This better be the future of all news channels!
Finally! Something to spare us from watching Jim Cantori standing in the rain!
That was absolutely awesome ! You talk about storm surge how many feet but even thinking about it is difficult to compare that to existing objects and structures until now.
This was impressive, hope you all do more!
Love these videos
Kudos to the Weather Channel for these graphics. They probably saved lives
This just makes me even more worried for my very stubborn Grandpa who lives directly in the path of the hurricane and refuses to evacuate. I sincerely hope it's just a few feet of water...
Awesome job! Instead of showing the guy faking the winds outside this is the way to do it.
His voice... Never heard it like that before, he sounds like he's extremely nervous but tries to sound calm
And the Oscar for Best Visual Effects goes to...
My heart was racing watching this video
Kudos to the Graphic/Animation Designer of this clip, some people, don't really understand what 6ft or 9ft storm surge really means,... This should be the default information video format for all storms in the future.
had goosebumps when you visualize the effects of the hurricane
great presentation, great use of the VR/AR medium :)
The graphics are amazing! It really shows how dangerous this can be.
Wow, that's the coolest weather report I have ever seen.

The animation is really breathtaking. May God help those affected by the hurricane. Be safe.
