Another characteristic to choose in selecting trees to keep is the tree trunk root flare. This is the base of the tree where it flares out at ground level. Every tree base should be pyramid shaped, like a traffic cone. This is the area of the tree where the roots start to radiate away from the tree to establish a strong root base. The tree William referenced at the 15:00+/- mark is an excellent example of a proper root flare. These trees are healthier and longer lived. You can notice this in trees that grow in a natural area that hasn't been disturbed by man. Most all trees planted by man, look like power/telephone poles or fence posts. Look at any area that's been "landscaped" and you will see this. This is one reason there are so many unhealthy, short-lived trees in today's society. Howard Garrett (the dirt doctor) in the Dallas area has many references regarding the root flares of trees.

@@ThePermacultureConsultantI agree, they looked like sapsucker holes, if all in a straight horizontal line. They make holes to trap insects in and come back later to eat and also drink sap. Not necessarily a sign of a tree disease. As a birder I advocate for keeping habitat for as many birds as you can. If you have a dead standing tree or two you can leave it for the woodpeckers owls bats and squirrels etc. I like your thinking though with forest health and thanks for the video. Its fun to manage a forest and sounds like you are thinking about a lot of variables. I hope the project goes well!

I think in Maine they have an upper and lower size limit on lobster so the big ones are thrown back as well as the little ones. They also mark a notch in the tail of females with eggs and throw those back. If they are caught again without eggs they know by the notch that they are able to produce eggs and throw those back also. Seems like a good idea.

Also, do you know about homeopathy? A few key remedies are always in my emergency kit wherever I go. Arnica 30 and 200C helps with anything to do with bleeding, bruising, swelling, and shock. That includes concussions and strokes as well as accidents and surgeries. Apis 30 and/or 200C for helping with anaphylactic shock, such as wasp and bee sting reactions. and others I can list if you’re interested. I also have a summary about homeopathy that helps in understanding how to use it… I use an analogy with engines.

You're going to have to clear again as the tree matures. Once you notice that the canopy is starting to close up, re-assess the trees and pick the favorable one. I hope that answers your question!
Instead to see how you plan to make biochar in a larger scale with the tree limbs I have 4 acres of burnt scrub oak Id like to process into char rather then mulching

According to him, you’d be better off mulching and improving the soil life, with maybe the addition of SOME biochar, instead of a BUNCH of biochar. If your soil is already great, do the biochar, but personally I would get a massive pile of woodchips off to the side and use it for mulch when needed.
The video I'll come out with should address both comments. Believe it or not, I really just want the charcoal for pig supplement. When they poop, it will be fully inoculated biochar.

They're the same skull candy brand. I think they were the $30 pair. They're noise cancelling as well as active listening. It will allow you to hear everything around you while you play music or podcasts. It almost improves your hearing. They're also bluetooth so I wouldn't really recommend using them for extended periods of time.
You have that wrong William with Fish, it’s fish in its species Tuna being a certain size r mullet being a certain size or catch count. You want the smaller fish to grow bigger and spawn young to have a sustainable river system , ocean etc.

Grassfed beef, or any ruminant, are part of the carbon cycle and build the soil ecosystem. Dr Allen Williams has measured their emissions and they are lower as well. Adaptive grazing in a silvopasture setting is regenerative, ie beyond sustainable, it self regenerates abundance with positive cascading effects. Unfortunately big ag has captured academia on these topics, but I do think that is starting to turn around because soil life is the new frontier. Cheers and blessings!

You should also limb the trees with a pole saw up 16 feet if the tree is big enough. It increases the value when you go to harvest them. :)

That oak looks like it has sapsucker holes in it. I believe it doesn’t damage the tree but maybe if there are too many holes it could.
They were a little too high up for me to tell. Either way, I would like to keep trees that are pest resistant.

What ear buds are you using? Do they work well for noise canceling while running a saw?
I use a $10 pair of wired skull candy earbuds when running my wood chipper, they do a pretty good job of muffling the sound while playing music.
