- Conventional farming wisdom holds that pastures should be treeless, and livestock in woodlots only cause trouble …right? Surprise - when you strategically manage your cattle, pigs, and chickens foraging amongst managed crops of berries, fruits and nuts, you wind up with an agricultural ecosystem that benefits both animals and plants. In this myth-busting clip from our Building Your Permaculture Property Summit, Mark Shepard describes his silvopasture practices, crops, and surprising outcomes (Jurassic chickens!).
If you enjoyed this clip, watch for our annual permaculture summit coming this fall -- three days of expert advice and case studies, free, live, here on CZcams!

I like that you integrate different species of trees into the system.
Mark is such a beast. Read his book. I love his sassy explanations of how dumb we do things lol
9:35 amazing advice about apple trees
Yep! I heard it years ago in another video interview of his, and I have it catalogued in my brain for if I ever get to plant my own apple trees.
Awesome video, thanks for the tour. It just seems so right.
Excellent video, thanks.
The nose ring is an interesting idea
Brilliant system.
subscribed. great video.
This is so good it makes me wonder why is not the standard
It’s too healthy
Not economically competitive.
@@aaronlohr8477 Idk, it depends of the species and the market sector it's sold. I mean, if you grow walnuts it may be profitable, if your cows have good genetics and it's sold as sustainable it could get into a more exclusive sector
@@ADNI.GREY. that’s a lot of ifs and maybes. Mark Sheppard probably makes more money from CZcams than farming. If a lot of people started doing the same thing as him it would dilute his brand, the “specialness” of what he does, and he would no longer be able to overcharge for his products.
@@aaronlohr8477 Yeah you're right on that but also business is a lot of ifs and maybes, so is life, we have to mix certain thing to make it unique and stand with it to specialize. Is not that we're creating a business model on the comments right?
Hi, are you’re cattle Belted Galloway?
Isn’t this a repeat?
