No, you can get knocked out and recover. If you watch the UFC, you will see it all the time. People catch a nice punch or kick to the head and you can see their eyes roll back in their head, then slowly come back to life after defending themselves for a minute or two.
I would say about 80% of knockouts end in the way you think, though. Most knockouts end at the time of the KO.
