IU is one of the Greatest vocalist in the world today. She debuted at the age of 15. 10 months after she signed with a small company. She started to auditioning at the age of 13 and was rejected 20 times, but always remained positive and with a smile. When asked at one audition how would she feel if she was rejected again she said that it would be OK because she knew she was going to be a singer.
She became a national star 2 years later in 2010 when she had 2 #1 hits. Since that time she has had more #1 hits in Korea than anyother group or artist by a factor of 2.
Last January Rolling Stone Magazine added her to their list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. Becoming the 1st Korean singer to make the list.
This MV which has over 52 million views in 5 weeks, is part of her latest comeback. She released a mini album on Feb. 20th. It has 5 songs and 4 of them have MV's. The other 3 are Holssi, Shopper (both filmed in the States which is significant as it relates to the story of those 2 songs) and Shh.. which is a song about Mother Daughter relationships.
IU had considered retiring after her Golden Hour Concert in Sept of 2022 at the Olympic Stadium in Seoul. She became the 1st female ti headline a concert their and the 90,000 tickets sold out in 30 minutes with 500,000 people waiting in the queue. This concert was her first concert since 2019 b/c of the pandemic. The support she got from fans changed her mind about retiring.
Holssi is tells us what is planning. HOLSSI means Dandylion seed. And she is going to become one and take to the wind and see how high she can fly. And that means coming to the US. In the song she acknowledges that it will not be easy but she won't fuss about it. No Korean soloist has ever tried to break into the US concert market. A few have performed concerts here but all of them where members of boy or girl (BTS, Black Pink etc) and had successfully toured the US before doing any solo concerts. IU's leading man in Love Wins All was V of BTS. Shopper picks up the story started in Holssi.
In Shopper she is talking about dreaming big outrageous dreams and having the encourage to go for them. She calls the courage greed. Where she is telling people it is ok to be greedy about what want to accomplish and to be. This partly a cultural thing as in Korea you can be called greedy if you dream bigger than what others think you are capable of achieving.
Shh.. is a very complex MV with a lot of things to pick up on and realize to understand it. This is typical of an IU MV. There is a lot going on in the other 3 videos as well, but Shh has elements that if you don't see them or you will likely remained somewhat confused. So if you watch this one plan on watching it several times and pay attention to anything especially if the camera focuses on it for even a second. Signs, photos, dress, shoes etc. The all have a part in the story.
As good as IU sounds recorded she sounds even better live. I have provided some links to some of her most iconic live performances below.
There are 2 behind the scene videos of the making of Love Wins All. And 1 each of the recording session for Love Wins and Holssi. Which by the way she caught the flu filming Love and then had to go into the studio to finish recording the song and 2 days later while still recovering had to record Holssi. Both of those recording sessions are impressive.
IU comes to the US on the last leg of her World Tour that started this past weekend in Seoul. She is going in July to Newark, NJ, Atlanta, DC, Chicago, Oakland and LA.

Background - IU wrote this song after. The suicide death of her friend Jonghyun, who is believed to have been partially at least pushed to take is own life due the hate commenters on social media. This song address those people and fans in general about rude behavior. This MV is still IU's most viewed MV on CZcams. The New York Times in 2018, listed her 9th on their list of the 25 Most Influential Artist in an article on the Influence of music on culture.

IU recently released a mini 6th album, and there are 5 songs on it, 4 of which have M/Vs, one of which is this 'Love wins all'. The other 3 songs' M/Vs are also of good quality and interesting, so I recommend you to watch them. The titles of those 3 songs are Holssi, Shopper, and Shh. You'd be surprised at how much variety a singer can put into one album.
IU is huge, perhaps the hugest :) pop star in Korea. She's big in TV and movies (often in artsy movies). She's a phenomena.
Thank you for reacting to my suggestion; I know it's not always easy to react to music from other cultures and with the language barrier. But you are right, IU has an awesome voice and both hers and V's (from the band BTS for those unaware) acting chops are pretty awesome. One theory I do like is that the way IU acts towards V is her showing her protective side to her fans.
But it's just beautifully sung and filmed and one doesn't need to dive into the symbolism to enjoy 😀

The male lead is BTS V (Kim Taehyung), who is a singer himself with beautiful baritone voice. He recently released an album Layover, please check out if you like Jazz.
The male lead Kim Taehyung, aka V, is the baritone of BTS (the biggest boy band in the world) which is rare in Kpop as almost all Kpop artists are tenors. He has the widest vocal range and can sing a wide variety of genres, including opera songs, R&B, jazz, indie, pop ballad, and British rock. I highly recommend you to react to the following songs: Tae and IU's duet of Ending Scene (In IU's Palette), Tiny Desk Concert, Le Jazz De V (Unfortunately, the late Mr. Bing Crosby is now unable to collab with him as his estate account loves his jazzy voice. I guess the grannie will surely love his rendition of It’s Been Looking A Lot Like Christmas and Cheek to Cheek) and Singularity. As for his latest solo album Layover, it's chosen by Billboard as the 2nd best Kpop album of 2023. Please also react to Love Me Again in that album. Taehyung is multi-talented just like his good friend IU. He has a great stage presence. Over 100 Kpop male idols look upon him as their idol and always watch his fancams to learn from his stage presence. He's also been the producer and visuals director of a BTS album.

IU is a well known singer and has a show called Palette. V is also well known. V is a member of the group BTS. He is a vocalist, dancer and actor. He stared in the drama Hwarang and was on Jinny’s kitchen. IU sent him the song and he liked it and agreed to be in the video.
Some things you missed: he's blind in one eye, she is deaf/mute, the camcorder represents the lens of love, the cube represents persecution for being different, she covered his good eye to spare him from seeing their last moments

Kim Taehyung is not only beautiful. He is one of the most talented and versatile male Kpop idols -- being a great singer-songwriter, actor (won an award for it), dancer (won an award for it), MV director, album co-producer. He is called the Idol of Idols in Korea with over 100 Kpop male idols being his fanboys. He finally has his solo career after being 11 years in the group managed by the company. He'll showcase more and more of his talents as an individual artist after enlistment.

She could have run away, while V fights off the cube. If you look closely after V tries to fight off the Cube, Her hand is evaporating. She takes her hand and she put it over his good eye, as a tear falls down. She does this, so he can't see what is about to happen to them. She is protecting him to the end. Then a tear drops from her eye. We see them being taken away on camera and then the camera dies as we see their clothing falling from above, on to a pile of clothing. The people who died before them.

These three are her new songs like Love wins all
First of all, I love the concept of your channel - 3 generations of women reacting together. It's amazing.
So, one of the hallmarks of Korean entertainment is their use of metaphor and symbolism to tell stories. This is a great example of it. I am a BTS fan, and one of the things that drew me to them as a band the most was their storytelling, both in song lyrics and in the visuals of their videos and choreography. So, with that context, a few things for you:
1) The director of this MV just directed a movie called "Concrete Utopia" as well - also a dystopian storyline. He said in an interview that their concept was that the "cube" represented the bias and prejudice that marginalized communities (such as the disabled) experience in society - but in the end, love wins all. He said that they welcome other interpretations of their story as well, though. 🙂
2) V is a member of BTS, and he is good friends with IU. All members of BTS are currently serving in the South Korean military, because military service is mandatory in their country for all able-bodied males due to the ongoing threat of North Korea, which is located a mere 14.4 miles from Seoul (capital city of South Korea). Technically the two countries are still at war. V filmed this music video with IU in December - one week before he (and three other BTS members) left for the military. V is a fantastic singer, and he is also a model (brand ambassador for Celine, Cartier, Simvest, and Compose Coffee), as well as an actor (he did a K-drama called Hwarang).
3) IU is a beautiful singer, as well as an amazing actress. She has had lead roles in multiple Korean series and films. These are available on Netflix in the US: Dream (film) and Hotel del Luna (series) would both be appropriate for you three to react to. My Mister is also a series available on Netflix, but it is a bit darker with more mature themes. She has acted in several other projects, but I don't believe those are available on any popular US streaming services. I love her as both an actress and a singer. IU also hosts her own variety show on CZcams, called "Palette." She hosts/interviews celebrities and then usually the guest sings their own song, IU sings another of their songs with them, and then they sing one of IU's songs with her. It's a wonderful show. V was actually a guest on "Palette" last fall.
I think you would enjoy delving in to BTS together. My then high school-age daughter is the person who really introduced BTS to me. She's been a casual fan since 2016 or so. I really got into them in 2020, during the pandemic when she was away at college and I was working from home and hardly going out at all. I am almost 58 years old, and I just really love them. BTS are known for their meaningful lyrics that discuss societal issues, self love, etc. Maybe start with Mikrokosmos or Magic Shop live performances (or, there are a couple of Tiny Tan music videos for Magic Shop and Mic Drop). For music videos, you could go with the oned for "Black Swan" or the "ON official music video", if you like story-driven music videos. BTS also have what they call the "BU" (Bangtan Universe), which is an underlying storyline/alternative universe that runs through many of their music videos, short films, webtoons, notes, etc. BTS has four vocalists and three rappers, so you will often hear rap in their music (they started as a hip hop oriented band in 2013, but they have expanded over the years into numerous music genres - so there is something for everyone). What I like about BTS rap is that their lyrics are deep and meaningful.
