What is going on!!! Why doesn't my liftgate work or open, ahhhh! Well you might have a jam or your motor might have stopped working. But an easy solution to get your liftgate open is to use this tip in the video. Then you can assess and figure out what needs to be done next. Apparently GM left a way to release the door so you would not be stuck with a closed door. Thanks GMC!

Perfect instructions for a timely problem on my 2012 Yukon XLT, same issue. Circle was right there and I drilled it out with a 1/4" bit. The only problem I ran into was I had I could unlatch it, but had to push a foot on it to open it (it's heavy). Once opened, I used compressed air to blow out all the connections and sure enough, it works great now. This video saved me some $, no need to go to the stealership.
this video saved my ass... just bought a 2007 Yukon Denali xl and this happened about two weeks after i got it... i went to the back and apparently they already had an issue, cuz there was a hole already drilled... i still have trouble finding the sweet spot to open it... had to use a screwdriver about five times already... came back to this video to see if there was anything i missed... going down instead of straight across was a big help... thanks for the video.... maybe a follow up video about what you're actually pushing with the screwdriver?
Great video! Before I drilled I spent a few minutes jiggling the handle and got it open (no drilling necesary). Cleaned the lock mechanism and all around the lift gate. Silicone grease spray on the lift gate mechanism and works like a charm!
I had open and now that I took off the screws to take off trunk it closed on me and it won't open now anymore with screwdriver

Thanks for the video! I was able to drill the hole and get the gate open with a screwdriver. HOWEVER, once I shut it again, I'm still unable to open the gate via the button on the back and/or the key fob. I think I'll need to buy a new mechanism, just need to find the part #.
Helpful - thanks. My problem is my gate opens but will not stay upen - immediately closes again. Checking a few things here but that is a neat cheat!

@@katehuber4118 I did - just yesterday I installed the replacement lift cylinders and that fixed the problem. I bought the cylinders online and spent in the middle of the range - - some just looked 'too cheap' to try and I'm thrilled that this worked!

No holes needed, try pushing the lift gate inward and holding while you press button to allow to unhook. In this case the debris you had on the base was not allowing it enough clearance to unhook. Its happened to me when i have overloaded the rear with cargo and has pushed the liftgate door outward tightly not allowing it to unhook. You can also try the master switch by the garage controllers, there is two buttons. One is for the glass only and the other is for the entire liftgate. They are labeled with pics.

It can be a pain in the butt for sure. Sometimes it takes a minute to get the angle just right to open. Other times it might take 10 seconds. its very annoying when it happens and GMC should have a better design.

On a 2007 gmc yukon. My back hatch opens electrical. But someone took their hand and messed my hatch up. The motor is trying to get my hatch up and dorm but for some reason the teeth aren't doing their job. So what can be the problem

My liftgate opens and closes fine with key fob and the button inside the hatch, but the button on the handle doesn't work.
ended up being the rear gate switch. purcahsed new one from amazon and all working fine now.
That's the issue I was having, and the close button wouldn't work, but the inside cab button and my key fob both would open and close the lift gate, and the glass button on the lift gate and fob worked fine. Then, all of a sudden, it started opening on its own!! Now, it doesn't open with any buttons, and only the glass will open. I'm flabbergasted.
@@MrFreeze79 would you be able to post the amazon link for that? My window opens fine but I can't get the gate open with my key fob or the button on the outside. I might have a different issue.. I dunno.
Before you drill any holes try the switch by the reading lights. Sometimes my door gets out of sync and that does it every time.

I'm Mom, using my son's account. We have the same issue. We have a 2009 GMC Yukon. Back window pops open fine. Lift gate, for the longest time would not budge. No grinding sounds. Lights flashed, etc., but no sound, no movement. We tried this fix and it started to work. However, the gate immediately tried to electronically shut again. It will only open about an inch or two and then slams shut (pulls hard). Any advice/suggestions?
Do you have a switch to turn off your door first. Otherwise, since it is a mechanical mechanism, then disconnect the battery first and try. hope it helps!
Your lift struts are bad.
It will randomly stop working again
Does it have a fuse?
Down is the key. It will not work if not pushing down.
Hello sir how you opened up glass door manuely?
There is a manual depress button on the top right side above the rear license plate
You had two bits which prevented the door from opening
My driver side passenger door doesn't open either. 🤔

Gabriel Solis I ended up replacing the trunk latch.. I replaced the left strut first didn’t work. I replaced the trunk latch and it worked

Gabriel Solis I replaced 2 things the left liftgate actuator.. the new latch is what fixed the problem though
