When I was young growing up in Boston, I used to listen to this song and all of Allan Sherman's albums with my parents and my brother. Years later, I moved to New York and ended up moving with my wife to Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn where we had and raised our two sons -- that was over thirty years ago -- and we're still in Brooklyn, within walking distance of Ocean Parkway.
We've probably passed each other a dozen times!
Wouldn't be surprised if you passed my aunt and Unk; they lived off Ocean in the Kensington section of Brooklyn
my 91 yr old dad had every one of his albums & would sit in the evenings and listen and laugh ---and we 5 kids learned all the words! I Love Allan Sherman!!! Long live the kind of parody
Thank for keeping Allan Sherman talent and memory alive . I sure miss him
RIP king of comedy songs. Gone too soon but not forgotten.
From someone proud of his Irish heritage, this is just as classic as the original! Allan Sherman was too awesome!
I couldn't catch my breath I laughed so hard, when I first heard this.
I'm of Irish heritage, but as a kid I'd never heard the original until I was an adult!❤
My grandmother introduced me to this guy when I was tiny. She’d put the LP on the hi-fi and start crying laughing. I was too young to get all the jokes at the time, but I laugh until my stomach hurt. I still do.
The Jewish Music Group has this and includes another album.
My mother used to play these records of him and we all would laugh and have fun listening to him. Hearing him again brings back the good memories.Thanks.
I loved him since I was ten years old!!! I grew up with this cultural genius!!! I'm so happy to hear him again!!!
My dad was a traveling salesman and he loved and indentified with this song. ☺
My dad was a salesman, too. In the garment center. Beat that! Haha.
@@MrMarkcohen12 Which garment center? In Manhattan?
grew up on Allen Sherman comedy albums. Awsome!
If you’re Jewish-American and listen to this and don’t ABSOLUTELY DIE LAUGHING, I just don’t know what the heck is wrong with you!
NEITHER DO I NEW????
@@rebeccaatkinson4531 I'm not quite sure what that means?
well im not Jewish, but i love this guy

Reminds me of my earlier Days Growing up in Brooklyn.? R.I.P. Allan Sherman.? For you are missed by all of your Fans.Sadly he passed away @ age 48 in 1973.Thank goodness for the Music that he left behind for us.?
My sister and I used to sing his songs in the water at Rockaway Beach. You need an analyst was one of our faves. And in the original Irish version, our family name is part of the song, so it's doubly delightful.
Yes! You might like my new biography of Allan Sherman. It's called Overweight Sensation: The Life and Comedy of Allan Sherman (Brandeis U. Press, 2013).
That certainly explains why there are so many little-seen photos in here! Bought the book a few years ago and started it, but am still getting used to using reading glasses and therefore unfortunately put down a lot of books when I don't have them on me. I love to know everything I can about this talented but deeply troubled man who meant so much to our family.
Thanks for the memories
I grew up in West Roxbury, a suburb of Boston, listening to this album with my parents. Who knew that twenty years later I'd be living with my wife and two kids in an apartment -- on Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, the same street that Sherman talked about coming home to in this song. I remember coming home to our apartment on that very street for years.
In fact, over twenty years later, we're still in Brooklyn within a ten minute's walk of Ocean Parkway and that same neighborhood he sang about...
LOL! I was born in NY, my family was in Sunnyside and Jackson Heights and I remember being in the car listening to all these songs as a kid and now decades later I'm up in Southie making my wife listen to all these songs again.
II remember Allan Sherman songs growing up and anybody that grew up in Brooklyn or the Bronx and is over 50 identifies with the Working Class Middle Class Images that these songs conjure up! They were a special time and the people had a special Chemistry and how I wish I could talk with some of the people that were part of that culture. Anytime I meet a "throwback of that culture I want to hug them and thank them!!!" I grew up on Ocean Ave and Ave H in Brooklyn. Believe it or not there are still some throwback Allan Sherman types that live in Brooklyn, especially at the South End of Ocean Parkway near Coney Island. Great People !
I am Italian American so I can definitely identify with the culture, It is very similar.
These people that Sherman sings about are the "Salt of the Earth" People!! Successful Christians and Catholics get it. Those that want to be prejudice against them will pay the price Thats just a Fact- Ive witnessed it. Love Thy Brothers.
Thanks you Allan.
Recognized as a true contemporary wit in 1962, Sherman displayed a genius for lyrics and cultural humor. He knocked out three very funny albums with the support of Harpo Marx and his son, Bill Marx. By the time Pres. Kennedy was murdered in the streets of Dallas, Americans were done with Sherman's levity. Sadly, Sherman didn't know that, and died of a broken heart. At least for awhile, Americans could be found mimicking Sherman's schtick, in a happier time.
He never went out of style!❤
Undoubtedly, a forever favorite. My dad and I used to sing this all the time!
My family used to listen to this album when I was growing up in Boston -- then I moved to New York and my wife and I ended up living in Brooklyn -- on Ocean Parkway
Have all the albums. We listened to them nonstop in Miami and when we visited all of our cousins in Brooklyn, and I still can never get enough. now my daughter adores Allan Sherman as well.
My folks had all of his albums which we 6 kids played on the Hi-Fi! It's almost 60 years later and I can still sing all of the songs!❤
RIP ALAN SHERMAN For you are missed by all of your Fans.?
@Elizabeth Anderson We counted one question mark. How many do you see? 🤷🏻♂️
He was the greatest! Weird Al owes him so much!
Stan Freberg also
Tom Leher too
Lehrer had albums out in 1953 and 1959, well before Sherman's albums came out. Both me produced fine work, but I don't think either man owed much to the other.

“Stein” with an “ei “ and “Styne” with a “y”. Poetry.
My fav AS tune.
BTW...I came upon an Allan Sherman memorial bench while hiking in Topanga State Park in Malibu. Always wondered about the story behind it.
Lived on this album with my brother and sister in Jackson, Michigan. I still LOL.
I once saw Allan Sherman on TV with Steve Allen, and they were making up songs on the spot based on whatever ideas came from the audience. Some young women gave as her topic “Eve Jackabowski.” Sherman is singing “Eve Jackabowski” over and over, muttering “What the Hell rhymes with Eve Jackabowski?” He suddenly snaps his fingers and says “Got it!” And immediately sings “Eve Jackabowski, lend me your house key, Please, I want to come in.” This man was a genius.
LOVE LOVE LOVE ALAN SHERMAN
One of the Funniest Singing Comedians! I love listening to all of his albums... Thanks For Posting!
my dad loved Allan Sherman, and had many of the classic records. My Son the Folk Singer, My Son the Celebrity, these two were the ones we played most. He was a genius, and his music will live forever, especially to those who know the kind of jewish humour and the old time culture he refers to.
Allan, it's just not St. Patrick's Day without playing this.
Thanks for your legacy.
Mark Cohen I knew your brother J.C. the conductor! He was GREAT! Thanks for the music I used to listen to his album with my brother 40 years ago!!!
Thank you, Mark Cohen for keeping all of this alive and well.
just biked down ocean parkway, and saw all the resident orthodox jews.
Finally, i understand that line.
OMG! I haven't heard this in eons! Funny! Funny! Funny! Back in the day this is one of his songs I tried to memorize, but could never get all the Jewish names straight. I still have his LP albums - all of them I think.
I wasn’t sure it was my cup of tea until I heard Stein and styne
Timeless. Enjoy!
Sherman's peak lasted a little beyond the Kennedy assassination. FOR SWINGING LIVERS ONLY did pretty well in 1964, and he had a HELLO MUDDAH board game out in 1965.
Thanks for posting this...too bad there's almost no clips of him.
Top ten fav!
GENIUS!!!!!
brought me back to when i was 5 yrs old
I'm still there. :)
To the tune of The Irish Jaunting Car.
Best of luck with your new book -- Hope to see your program in December.
I may have learned more Ashkenazi Jewish last names from this song than from meeting actual people in the following 50 years!
Uncle max just be like ashes now and there like. "WE'LL ALWAYS BE THERE WHEN YOU COME BACK"
Great parody of Dear Old Donegal.
that's why I'm here lol
The best
Classic!!
I have been a fan of Allan Sherman for many years and I always got a kick out of this song, especially the end where he sings the last line badly. He was a terrible singer, though he was so funny. It's a shame he died so young at the age of 49.
He sings the last line perfectly, in a bad Irish accent.
The original Weird Al
What song was this a parody of ? ?
Would it have been funnier if he had attempted to sing this in an Irish brogue?
No, It's supposed to be a distinctly Jewish parody of an old folk song. All the songs on the album are meant to convey the perspective of a Jewish comic circa 1962.
An Irish brogue would have been more incongruous with Jewish content, and vice versa.
Isn't this a parody of some Irish song? I wish I could place the name of it...
Dear Ol Donnegal, also less known as the Irish Drinking Song from Whose Line
Sure, and oy vey, me bucko!
Tip your hat Weird Al.
Parody of Folk song

What about human rights abuse. Made in the UK. That's why I'm going to Strasbourg. Human commission on rights .
HEY ! THE JEWISH REMAKE OF ' DEAR OLD DONEGAL ' , SO ' ERIN GO BRAgh LESS ' AND HOPEFULLY TOPLESS , TODAY ST. PADDY'S DAY ! I POSTED BOTH SONGS TOGETHER ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE FOR A LAUGH ! NOW KEEP IN MIND , I ALSO CATER BAR MITZVAH'S = LAURA MARZZ-so make a ' mitzvah ' and go to the bar , please !
Ah, where is he when we so desperately need him? At least we have CZcams to bring him back to life. A great break from the Trump lunacy.
The US is in SO MUCH TROUBLE! I'm absolutely terrified now that the crazies have gotten their way....boy, are they going to be sorry!
David Gartner You guys are nuts! The U.S. is in trouble because of the fascist left and Obama. Hillary would of been the worst president ever. Still though, Alan Sherman has nothing to do with politics. Some people will use any platform to rant and rave.
Ummm...fascism is inherently right-wing. One can't be both left-wing and fascist any more than one could be right-wing and communist. Trying reading a few history books.
Um...The video was Allen Sherman, not Trump or Obama or even Hillary Clinton
David Gartner What, with Sherman lunacy?
Years ago I talked to Weird Al about doing a movie about Allan Sherman. We were sitting around a table on the backlot at Universal Studios. He didn't seem enthused by the idea.
Shame his loss.? Allan Sherman is a Legend.?
Lori Murphy Not surprised, unfortunately. Weird Al is compared to Allan Sherman sometimes, but.....not nearly as good.
I totally agree....but he IS a nice guy (W.A.Y.)
Drew Carey would be the man for that role. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a laarge daark aardvark stuck in my head.
@@neverjethot No he wouldn't be. Someone innately Jewish would have to play the part.
So Jewish!
This has absolutely the WORST closed captioning I have EVER seen!
+Barry Ryan Actually, it is typical of CZcams closed captioning I have seen on many other videos. When I turn down the volume on interview videos and the like, and turn on closed captioning, I am astounded at how little sense the transcribed words make. Automated voice recognition without a "bias" toward the subject matter and dialect of the speech is an absolute disaster unless it is review by a human. Extraneous noises (such as instrumental accompaniment and laughing) don't exactly help either.
Doesn't Allan Sherman look a lot like Kim Jong-Un?!? Maybe there's Jewish blood in NK?
The answer is no, he looked absolutely nothing like Kim Jong-Un.
Only to the extent that overweight men tend to resemble each other slightly. Condolences on the muscle you pulled with that stretch.
This guy needed medical help. No better yet he could be President of the United States!!!!
