Marathon Training: the final 13.1 mile Threshold Test

- Marathon training is in the books, or as we like to say, 'the hay is in the barn.' No more hard workouts in this marathon training block. Time for the full on taper mode and a flight to Vienna in the morning for the INEOS 1:59 Challenge with Eliud Kipchoge, who also appears to have been a great marathon training block for Kipchoge from Kenya. This threshold test went very well, and I do believe I set a half marathon PR in the process during this final marathon workout. Grateful for this marathon training block, I've learned a lot. See you in Vienna!

Eliud be like: Nice recovery run
omg 😂 😂 😂
Im really new to this running thing and ever since I started watching your videos I have really been inspired to run! Thanks Seth!! You're awesome! Plus your edits are 👌🏼💪🏼
He's good!
When there are family/friends around the course it really spurs me on
Really excited for you man, hope you can come to England some time soon
Having some friends running the race with you is what helps me immensely. I’m always thinking about pushing myself because they’re there.
When dad wins the race, there will be more icecream 😂 no pressure 😉
Love the boys for this 👍
absolutely get a lift from all the volunteers out there to help us running. Here in Ireland many times in the ice cold and rain, they there cheering and helping us along. amazing
I do mostly ultras here in Italy so the beautiful scenery of the mountains makes me think of that instead of the pain!
While I appreciate the volunteers, by the time I get to the aid station it’s been a long day and their enthusiasm is waning. It’s different at the back of the pack.
Good luck in Amsterdam, Seth!
I'm facing a race uphill this saturday, a 13km course with >600m elevation gain. The finish line is at the top, so it's all uphill without going down 😆.
I respond really well to hearing the speaker when I approach the finish, sometimes on 1K distance of more. I do not respond well on the smell of hamburgers and sausages along the track. Or spectators smoking.
i love getting high fives from kids along the course
kofuzi: Same for me! Always gives me an extra boost
Wish you all the luck SETH.....GOD BE WITH YOU AND YOURS ALWAYS!
I LOVE the sound of running! Thank you.
You got this, Seth! Here’s my pro travel tip- walk around and stretch in the airplane every couple of hours. 😀. QOD- A few friendly words from those close by at the start line really help me.
I respond well to musicians along the course (drummers, trumpeters, etc.) and people that cheer me up like they know what I am going through.
Unfortunately I'll not make it to Vienna on saturday and sunday, although I live in (Salzburg) Austria, so I wish you the best stay in my homecountry and all the best for your marathon in Amsterdam! Go for it Seth and remember, it's chilly out here!
What an exciting time this is! I'm running my first marathon this Sunday (Melbourne). Been training hard the last few months. Nervous yet excited. Absolutely loving the journey. Seth, love the channel. Following your marathon training as I do my own has been inspiring. What a time to be alive! Good luck!
I respond to cool weather the best on race day, definitely not humid hot races. Keep up the great work! ❤👟
QD in an ultra, the volunteers for sure. They can save your race. I love the funny signs in half marathons through town. "this was a good idea two months ago in the bar"
Sooo exciting for your Amsterdam marathon👍😀 note: Going east you lose time. For those taking video with a phone - remember hold the phone horizontally / landscape mode 😄
I love the crowd support and rain
Seth out here killin the game!! So proud of you, and know the hard work will pay off!
I enjoy sharing workouts with close friends and competing with one another. Competition drives success
Crowds for sure help me. I always like to see the kids around courses and how excited they are to cheer on the runners.
Seth.. Your attitude about those intense workouts is really inspiring. Always finishing with a smile and a "that was awesome" (or similar) is such a great way to approach the run, even if it sucks and hurts really bad.
Ill definitely be conscious about shifting my attitude in this way. Thanks again for the inspiring videos.
Great video and loved seeing the your family side.
looking so smooth
Giving gratitude to everything that is going on around me during the race!! Good luck in Amsterdam!!! We are rooting for you!!
Yesterday I saw the run in Strava, wow man! you crushed your PRs and you make it look so smooth, you're on fire! Kipchogue might indeed run at 5 am so good luck with the jetlag. Have a great flight & Welcome to Europe!! :)
I think the thing about race day is the opportunity to lay it all on the line and spend that fitness account that you’ve been building and making deposits into for weeks & months. It’s fun to finish a race and say, “I gave it my all and held nothing back.”
What a great tester for Amsterdam, solid run!
QoD: I respond very well to cheering along the course too, especially from friends and family!
Having friends in the race helps a lot and the volunteers always give me a boost!
Glad to see your channel doing so well and good luck in Vienna!
Excited for you Seth. You are going to nail it in Amsterdam!
Great vid! love your kids. I see you are enjoying the moment right now. You're gonna crush it!
footage and music is top notch. feeling the energy
Great run Seth, 👍 for me the greatest motivator is aid station support as you pointed to. It’s in our DNA to perform better when it becomes about more than the self.
Best of luck Seth. Enjoyed watching your training. Enjoy your trip too
man this content is too good
Awsome style of video! I always love to actually see the running! Keep it up and good luck!
I love the crowds but the volunteers are the absolute best!
Good luck Seth!
You’re flying!
I look forward to both Kipchoge and the Dam Marathon.
I’ve a half on Sunday and I always respond well to the competition.
Any PB’s I have are from races, not training.
Really looking forward to watching you compete, pulling for ya !! Hope I can find it on TV :-) Good Luck !
Stay positive Seth, you're going to race amazingly! QoD: I enjoy the photographers on the course. I'll usually make a funny pose, expression, or gesture, and seeing them smile or laugh really lightens up the mood.
Best wishes, Seth! Rock it! 👍👍
Good luck with the race, looking strong! In races, taking the back on slightly better runners works good for me for PBs, pushed by the crowds.
I respond really well to running in a pack during a race. I'm always running on my own and I enjoy the camaraderie/competition that I don't get in training. Safe travels!
Great job, Seth!! Can't wait for Amsterdam!
Insane run!
QD: good quality air I live in a place with tons of humidity so I appreciate breathable air
I really like your videos and wish all the best in your race
an outside factor could be that kipchoge made it under the 2 hour. extra motivation
Awesome vlog as usual. Love these workout ones! Good luck dude!
I also ran a half marathon at MP-14 16 days out (new PR over outdated one from 3 years ago!). Sore legs for 3 days. I hope I did not mess up my marathon.
I got my last 15 mile sub marathon pace run in on Sunday. Lets roll on Amsterdam bro. See you there
crowds and teammates definitely help pump me up and keep my adrenaline going. but competition has to be the deciding factor. being able to push myself past what i couldn’t do running a race solo hurts but the outcome is always better.
Great work man well done good luck for the marathon !!
Dude.. Steve and Jordan - fist bump!!
Have a great flight Seth!
Just come and train from Eldoret, Kenya,,,anyways when will you be going to Vienna
I do very well with crowds and scenery. When I run past crowds I stay calmer than when its quiet, i don't have to think much as they are doing all the adrenaline pumping for me, especially when finishing. Latley I've picked scenic races that just keep me in a zen type of mood, keeping relaxed and focused.
What motivates me is cheer stations in some races and of course finish line post race cookie dough. WFPS and Fargo have this for post race treats.
Looking fast and fit. Crush it Dude!!
Raced a point to point half marathon on sunday with 30 plus mph winds against us the whole way, been windy over a week in training, including a 19 mile run last night, i would kill for a light breeze lol gl in your marathon, hope the weather doesnt conspire
Hey your stopping in toronto that's where I live
QD: cool and sunny weather always puts me in a great mood, and helps me enjoy the environment and experience.
All the best in Amsterdam. Visual success (qualifying time on the clock)!
Great video! Seth I am a bit confused with your threshold pace...as you ran at 3:15 today and that's your desired pace in Amsterdam. You talked a lot about your threshold training so...at 3:15 pace per km you're still on the edge between aerobic and anaerobic? Keep the good work, you motivate us all!
I think you will change your usual after this - I have found that the best time for a final hard workout before a key race is around 10 days. looking smooth and strong Seth, go get em buddy!
QOD - I think its very internal for me for a key race its getting up and knowing I am ready more than anything else but from an external standpoint cheering helps even a small amount in an Ultra is so uplifting - the experience of racing is in many cases enough though. I really hope I can get back to it soon
Nice work on the threshold, travel safe!
Also! Could you do a video on Pre run stretching and activation? It would help a ton!
Qd- Crowd and excitement and also the thoughts of pushing till the finish line.
the best of luck in Amsterdam you will be great push yourself
This is inspiring
QOD- I run shorter races so there is no volunteers in my races, but what makes me run faster is listening to my coach when I pass him and do what he says.
Dude I’m running Chicago in 2 days and i think I’m more excited about your race than my own....lol
I respond best to rain on raceday, strange but it’s a fact. Good luck with your race!🙏
Best of luck, safe journey
Safe travels Seth!
I think that when I just try and relax and not really think about the race is when I have my best performances.
I respond really well when someone says it cant be accomplished or I cant do it. Like today someone told me I couldnt get 7 miles in 70 mins I got 7.96 go kill it seth. Hey true love!!! Hey seth boys
168 is great for heart rate in marathon pace for half only thing to worry about is 183 max. Heart rate beaucouse if you go anareobic in marathon to early then there are two options
1.)DNF
2.) Hit the wall and finish poorley
At least that is what I know
Qd.) Sings, beacouse I dont hear crowds while racing.
Weather is what I respond best to. I always unknowingly run faster when I run into the wind. I think that was a big part of me placing at conference outdoors for me my senior year. I also ran my best conference XC race in 3” of mud so that should say something
I’m running Chicago on Sunday, I love crowds. It drives me
Have a blast!
Amsterdam marathon is usually broadcast live on Eurosport TV , (a sky TV) channel. so I will be watch that. If or when you are on camera I will film it and send it over to you.
I don't seem to respond as well to competition as others. Definitely respond well to positive volunteers and crowd. Especially if I know them too 👍
QD: size of the event. I like big races with at least 10000+ runners because then I get pumped before the race when I come there. In addition to that it's nice to try to run fast when there are so many other runners and everybody around you is running well.
Safe travels✈️
When I see a familiar face watch out!!! Just awesome
I love competition and cheering, particularly from people I know
honestly the when you know youre on your way to a new PB
Hey Seth, what brand is that black singlet you wore on the threshold run? It is fire 👌
I respond really well to seeing a downhill section.
onwards and upwards
Azlan Boyan yes indeed! Thanks for tuning in 🙏🏻
Crowds are a great boost for me
Sounds like the numbers are there for you to qualify for the Olympic Trials! Just get out there and perform! You'll get it for sure!
When you go East you loose time, it's later in the day
All the best in Amsterdam mate...
Just wanted to send my good luck and prayers out to your staff go out there and kill it looks like you’re going to crush it awesome time you put forth today
Seth, how is your PF doing now?
I run by Andy's on the canal all the time. I swear its the exact same one that you went to haha.
Great vid Seth
