  • 🎥 Our historic, operational infrastructure doesn’t get much more impressive than Goole Swing Bridge in Yorkshire.
It was Grade II* listed 35 years ago and still works hard each day to keep you and freight operators moving:

I think many people just take the railways for granted and do not appreciate the amazing structures throughout the UK built by and for the railways infrastructure. The public are quick to slate the railways, when things go wrong, but tend to keep very quiet when things are running as "Normal" and forget about the millions of train journeys carried out day to day. I think its Marvellous how it all comes together.

you're not supposed to say anything when things are just doing their jobs.
you're supposed to moan when they're NOT doing their jobs.
that's life. Company bosses know that they serve whoever pays for their services/products/whatever i.e. their customers are their bosses, not the other way round.

Superb video thanks to everyone involved for showing us not only the history but the context of how it fits into today's Network. Invaluable films about our past and present shown by these employees who have expert credible knowledge. Keep them coming like this!

I was lucky enough to carry out signalling upgrades here around 2005 I if I recall. We did all the mechanisms to allow the signalling cables to disconnect and reconnect - Was on the bridge when it swung open - a sight to see that not many other do!

What both a briliant video and engoneering, there's a swing bridge in Norfolk, not as big as that one but impressive none the less

I’ve walked past this. I think it’s about time there was a pedestrian bridge alongside.

Living in Newcastle for much of my life I was always intrigued as exactly how these structures work. Unfortuantely I never got to see the bridge in Newcastle in operation but what I wanted to understnd is how it turned when it it essentially butting up to the road in Newcastle and the rails at Goole. I figured that the first stage of swinging the bridge is to lift it up and then swing. Here was a golden oppurtunity to show that exact process but unlucky for me and others it was not shown. Shame.

Very interesting piece of engineering and how it works is so incredible to see. As our railways are ever more changing in years and decades to come.

I saw this bridge mentioned on #RailNatter | Episode 136: A look at (probably) all of Britain's moveable railway bridges:
