I have so much nostalgia for these 4-VEP slam door trains. I'm glad at least one is going to be restored.

What passion this gentleman has for the railway! Keep it up, and I hope to be seeing 3417 later on in my life on the mainline!

Every day from Portsmouth to Wimbledon and back to work in Dundonald Road. They were mighty cold and draughty in the winter but still managed to sleep most of the way there and back every day ! Glad one has been saved.

Well said. The unsung heroes and work horses of the system often are not remembered… The sound of slam doors instantly remembered. Good work team.

Can’t wait to hear that ‘digga digga’ noise on the mainline again:-))

I remember the 4VEPs very well, as I commuted through Wimbledon to and from school, then college in central London. Well done to the Southern Electric Traction Group 😊

We're getting there! Reaching two digits shows there's not much left to go.

Cursed them when they were running, love them now one is being saved 😂 many times I sat in the guards van of one of these with my Aunt from Waterloo to Surbiton, on day trips to and from town

I've never travelled in a 4-VEP, but there is a survivor of what was in my area while I was a commuter. It is there due to the efforts of a group of people, like those of the setg. More power to your elbows, guys and gals.

I remember as a kid riding these to our local town!! Such a shame they've nearly all gone now.

His speech got me teary eyed about the 507's on my native Merseyrail network. Soon to be replaced after over 40 years of loyal service. I do hope someone preserves a few! I also hope someone finally puts them in to model form so we Scouse model railwayers can enjoy them for decades to come.

Superb! Was that Driver Potter? The minions are doing fantastic work! I look forward to seeing 3417 hopefully back on the Mainline!

Great video, great project and a great chap. I remember getting these Virginia Water and Waterloo whilst visiting my father out there or doing trips into town with him. Always tried to get the "secret" non first compartment, great to see ones been preserved. Be great to see it or be on it on the mainline (preferably on the Waterloo to Reading service 😉).

That is a Class 423 (4-VEP) Slam-door train at Strawberry Hill Depot in Southwest London. Those trains were the best used on South Western, Southern and South Eastern lines in Southeast England.
