  • Our Spring 2017 group met with Vladimir Pozner in Moscow. Pozner has been Russia’s #1 TV Icon for over four decades. He is an independent thinker who is not a supporter of Putin, but at the same time he appreciates the role Putin has played in stabilizing the country since assuming Russia’s presidency in the year 2000. Pozner observes the ways in which Russia’s media is controlled, as well as the ways America’s media is controlled. For a totally honest appraisal of the politics and media of both countries, take the time to watch this piece.

As an American, It is so sad that Russian people think we, the people, do not respect them and think they are less than human :(. I have always had great respect for Russian people. They were heroes and have a lot to be proud of. My God, it is heart breaking to think of the horrendous losses they suffered in WW2. This is not the only reason why I respect and even love Russia. The problem now, from my point of view is the way Putin and others are exploiting anti-Americanism. Now we are really turning into enemies. Also, the stupidity of our allies are causing friction with Russia where it is totally unnecessary. After the Soviet union fell I had great hopes that The USA and Russia would be great friends. As an ordinary citizen it is painful to realize this will not happen in my life time. If you are Russian, I want you to know that we want to be friends and respect you guys. Maybe there has not been enough time for all the bad history between us to pass and stop effecting our attitudes. I hope that one day our children can be great friends, and we have blissful peace between us. This is my hope.

The less agreeable ally is the strongest one. We have always been allies during really shitty times: Russia has supported Lincoln during the Civil war and made difference, the Americans have saved countless Russian lives during starvation of 1920's, not mentioning WWII. Of course we have tensions during peace time, because we both are BIG. Sadly, anti-American propaganda really makes its thing here in Russia, but what surprised me back then is when 9/11 happened, the entire front of American embassy was covered with flowers and people cried their eyes out. In spite of massive propaganda, in spite of Kosovo conflict, this was the real attitude of the Russians. God bless America.

Thank you, man! As a Russian, I appreciate your friendly attitude very much. But the root of the problem is that Russia is managed by mafia. That's the main cause why Russia cannot communicate with other countries well, and why other nations often disrespect Russia. Nobody is perfect and not only Russia behaves dishonestly, sometimes USA and their allies are not very honest as well. But in general, USA and European countries have decent people in their governments while Russian government is pure mafia, unfortunately. Just be aware of that when you are talking about Russia-USA relations.

Two hours on a Sunday afternoon well spent listening to this. I felt I learned a lot about journalism then and now, and about how Russians see themselves and others. I came away feeling very enlightened.
But afterwards I found myself wondering, was it him or me? If I already thought like him but just didn't know those specific facts, am I more preconditioned to finding him believable than certain other audiences might be?
I know winners of prestigious prizes in technical fields, highly intelligent professors at top universities, who seem to be on the same wavelength as Fox News anchors and find what they hear on Fox News more credible than what they hear on say National Public Radio. Is it Fox News, or is it them? So far I've been unable to answer this to my satisfaction. I find the arguments presented on Fox News ludicrously illogical, but is that Fox News, or is it me?
I had three criticisms of Pozner's many answers. The small one is that, for some people, it is offensive to deny there is a God. When someone asks "do you believe in God", instead of answering "I am an atheist" or "I am an agnostic", more tactful and maybe even more truthful is to say "I would never dispute God's existence." If they ask "do you believe in the immaculate conception" (Richard Dawkin's obsession) Pozner need merely say, "Well, I'm Jewish." (I would say "Oh, I'm a pantheist." It's true: I believe the universe exists, though I would argue we're not made in its image.)
Next is his attitude to China. As someone with US, French, and Russian citizenships it's perhaps understandable, but has he ever followed his own advice and tried to see the world through Chinese eyes?
The big one is his claim that all significant US journalism today is ruled by large organizations that inhibit the freedom journalists used to enjoy as recently as 1995. What? Has he never heard of public-funded NPR? Using the threshold he implied of around 2 million for the size audience above which the Russian government steps in to shut down a station, NPR's drive-time audience of 14.6 million would make it an instant illegal propaganda station in Russia! We the public voluntarily pay for NPR in order that advertisers can't control what NPR's journalists report. If an advertiser on NPR wants to withdraw their ads, no problem, another will step in to reach that huge audience. Is the fact that Russia has nothing like NPR a secret in Russia?
I guess you could say that NPR has preconditioned me to think like Pozner. It's really too bad Russians like him have no appreciation for the role NPR plays in journalism, it might change their perception of American journalism today.

      1) In many interviews Pozner says that religion is very personal and sensetive topic and everebody has a right to believe whatever they want, moreover people have a right not to discuss itif they don't want to. His point is that all kind of believes are equal and everybody can say whatever they want and whenever they want about it. So I guess it is not a right thing from your side to advice him what to say due to this.
      2) Agree. But as he said he tries to be very careful in his judgments and China is not the country he dealed with a lot and it's not the part of his interests.
      3) I recomend you to watch his other interviews especially in russian. Pozner talks a lot about national public media and not only radio in your case. He often says that public media is the only way to create and maintain a trully honest and independent journalism. Furthermore he even tried once to create a public television in Russia and discussed that topic with Putin. But it did not work out.
P.S. English is not my mothertongue so sorry in advance.

I am half Russian by my mother side and half German by my father side... When Government starts prosecute all Russians I started loosing jobs after jobs in USA.. this is the facts ... I was humiliated, in the order to fire me from the jobs after jobs, disgracefully they fabricated everything. On one job they hired me at first, but postponed my training, and in few weeks send me a letter that they changed their mind and with regrets came to decision not to hire me. They destroyed all my carrier I was hard working all of those years, where I was not hirable anywhere after all... It was dumb politicians, who opinionated their dumb opinion by hurting others ... and I was close to breakdown. When I filed documents of discrimination to the state, to my big surprise they told me it’s no such discrimination there... After escaping Soviet Union regime and risking my life I was hoping to find home and peace here, but I am living in another Soviet Union, in the place where I went through hell by force! If you ask me how I feel now about it... With my Master degree and huge baggage’s of knowledge of corporate of America NO ONE GAVE ME a chance. I am a top performer at all my jobs, but when time comes to fire I am in the first row to be chosen, who never got promotions nor raise. I laugh when on TV and elsewhere they are talking about carrier opportunities promises ... I am working for small money on two jobs 16-20 hrs... Sadly to say I leaved in 4 different countries and never been so much humiliated like here. When it comes about politics, they picked a group of ethnicity and started humiliate them. I know that not all Americans like that, and I met a very good people, who helped me to survive, but because of abusive power small brain cells in the power, that’s what usually happens. In Russia I was afraid to say am German bc Germans have been prosecuted and here I am afraid to say am Russian after all... How sad... outrage and disgusting feelings... I lost my trust, respect! You are doing a really poor job by not translating or allowing others to translate these interviews into another language. Most of the world do not listen to news in English, the media doesn´t even deal with this international issues, so many countries still see things like in the old days, that is: through the western (NATO) eyes.
I would like to translate this (for free and spending my time and effort) but the copyright issue would ban such an attempt. Sending the subtitles via You tube contributions? I have done it and after a year still wait for the translations to come out: it was naive of me to think someone would review it and give it the go ahead.
So, your ''Center for Citizen Initiatives'' if keeping things just for English speakers, like it was just a thing between the US and Russia. You don´t really care about the world's view: have you even thought about this 'liittle' language issue?. No. Tha´ts the great paradox, or, rather, contradiction.

    RE : U.S. CREATED V. PUTIN
I have two questions for Mr Pozner -:
    1. Do you threaten to "nuke" all who do not view the U.S. as their Icon.
    2. What do you , in your oligargic mind , propose to do to those who do not view you as their icon .

    • @paulzx5034
      @paulzx5034 Před 2 lety

      1. I will quote Sergey Karaganoff, mastermind of our foreign policy, Putin adviser:
"Big issue with US - they not experience strategic defeat yet. Thus not have a strategic wisdom. By defeating US - we will make good thing for them. Through such defeat - they will learn strategic wisdom and become a more valuable member of international community"
So our goal not to destroy, but to educate. To change behavior.
      2. Russians not view themselves as an icon to follow. Yes, we believe we have a mission. But in order to accomplish this mission me must stay humble. Because mission is to... to stop Antichrist. No less than that.
I will not go to details. But...according to Bible - Antichrist will prevail in the end. So we know that we doomed to fail. Its more about save one's soul through suffer for the right cause.
I end with another quote - now from Sscred Oath of Russian Army.
"I swear to firmly stood up to all hardships and deprivations of service" .
You see, not a good base to picture ourselvees as "icon". Its more a personal goal. Path to God. Where "person" is we, Russians.
