How wildlife crossings protect both animals and people

  • To protect the movement of wildlife impeded by busy roadways, a series of manmade overpasses and underpasses throughout the United States helps animals big and small safely get across the street, preventing collisions and saving lives. About 1,500 of these structures already have been built. Correspondent Conor Knighton looks at how they have protected genetic diversity in animal populations while also greatly reducing roadkill. He also visits the site of the Wallis Annenberg Wildlife Crossing near Los Angeles, which when complete will help cougars cross one of the busiest highways in the country.

      I appreciate the idea and maybe implementation in extreme cases if warranted, but the economics of building something like this just doesn’t make sense. There are a lot more people that need help. May sound like “whataboutism” but I can name a million things that should get funding first. This is a money pit from start to finish and her justification regarding genetic variance has a sprinkle of truth but she blows it way out of proportion. Makes it sound like they will go extinct tomorrow if they have to cross the road to mate. It’s also probably the biggest project of this lady’s career, so I’m assuming some bias is present. Animals cross at night, when other predators can’t see them. Also when there’s only a car per mile on the roadway. I just don’t see widespread economic or ecological benefit from this other than making policy makers look good, and paranoid naturists sleep better at night.

      Uhm, they're building ecoducts in the Netherlands for ages. The first one was apparently in France in the 50s.

    • @LeafHuntress
      @LeafHuntress Před 23 dny

      @@codymoe4986 A writing technique known as "hyperbole".
      Highways as we know them today have been around for less than a hundred years. So of course the "for ages" was meant to convey "a very long time but i don't know for quite how long."
      That's why in the very next sentence i gave the info that i did know; first one was in France in the 50s.
      These things have several names, personally i prefer the term ecoduct, as it mirrors an aquaduct & the original Roman aquaducts must've been used by some species to traverse the landscape.
