Mike takes the DriveTribe Hellcat to a dyno to see whether the big-power claims from Dodge are true. Can the Charger create over 700hp at the crank?

I was thinking it was going to make more, but not that much I thought 736. More powe makes sense, 10,000 miles on a supercharger it is nicely worn in, and with the cutouts at the resonator makes the the exhaust more free flowing.
Someone snuck a pulley on your supercharger, and your boy is going to hook you up with a carbon fiber intake system and some nice filters. Should be in the 760's if not 770's when done?
Dont take the mileage check as correct, you need to do further research as i have seen too many mot's where the tester has entered the incorrect mileage and they say once its entered it can not be changed, found more incorrect mileages because a tester did not enter or read rhe mileage correctly on vehicles then clocked vehicles, i wonder if there is a civil law case for devaluation of a vehicle due to incompetent test procedures
Extra power may stem from better fuels. We've some poor fuel here stateside, from the pumps. I've seen my mileage decrease because they've amped up the detergents in our fuel to cut down the cost for fuel for the actual station. So 750hp doesn't sound that far off, may be the difference of fresh oil and air filter at this point. Still awesome video. There should be some Road Runner stickers in there somewhere just to accentuate the color haha!
Having actually shot car videos for local car-clubs, the amount of work that goes into a Drivetribe video is huge. The detail work/shots take forever and need some planning. And it makes all the difference while nobody bats an eye and takes it for granted.
Agreed. Making videos is very tedious, time consuming and difficult. It also takes a lot of skill.
Drivetribe are stepping it up, but Throttle House are the best on the internet at cinematography.
@@C.Fecteau-AU-MJ13 I absolutely love those guys. they're just two (rich) bros having fun with cool cars
@@J_spec6It's an awesome channel, they're raising the bar. But I don't think they're particularly wealthy.
@@C.Fecteau-AU-MJ13 "wealthy" may have been a better word. idk tbh. Really just poking fun at them lol.
6:44 from this shot it does have standard hellcat valve covers. You can just see it peeking out from under the engine cover.
The valve covers on a redeye would be black, the demon valve covers are red, on a standard Hellcat, the valve covers are orange.
If I had to guess, the company that imported this car tuned it up a little bit. If they're like most dealers, they then add 4x the cost of the modifications to the purchase price.
@@heathergreylive agreed, I’ve got one with a pulley, long tube manifold, and tune and I’m pulling 760 hp. Manual trans. Challenger
@@heathergreylive Judging by the Munich plate I'm guessing its from Geiger cars..and they do like to tune
@@trevorsanford1065 Dude, have you even watched the video? He mentions that the aftermarket resonators say AEC (as installed by the importing company that goes by the same name). 2:11
Incidentally, AEC has an office in Munich.
So, what would Geiger have to do with all of that?
Mike seeking approval of the Hellcats new color from every person that appears on this channel makes me laugh it could be a great running gag
Every video Mike has done is the same: informative, succinct, honest, truthful and extremely entertaining. May he keep up the great work!
Uh still lots of questions about the Mad Ford stuff...
Unless you count the ones on the ones he does on the second channel. Pog collecting, anyone?
Those numbers are staggering, especially the power curve is nuts.
Vacuum actuated cut outs. Mostly here in the States, it's a push button for loud, push again to reduce assholery.
@NOYFB Don't Ask true.
For someone who usually doesn't like mopars even though I'm from/live in Texas, this is sick
In our case Chargers are everywhere in TX so they are nothing special. It's hard to get excited for something you see everyday. I think I have seen 1 Hellcat Charger and 1 Redeye Challenger in the past year and about 1-2k chargers. When I do notice them I get stoked. Same thing with Mustangs, when I see a Shelby or 350GT they stand out from the regulars I see all the time. I bet in Europe where they are rarer it is more exciting.
this engine has to be in the top 20 of all time wow.
I'm enjoying seeing the journey that the DriveTribe cars and Richards vehicles are on. Will be interesting to see what's next!
Next episode - Mike blew up the Hellcat motor with some aftermarket parts.
……after owning a Challenger Hellcat whilst working in Dubai, I can CONFIRM the 700+ gee-gees figure. Absolutely insane performance & endless miles of smiles…..
Dodge has a very long history of significantly underrating it's HP and torque numbers on their "go-fast" models. Not surprised by that number, though the free-flow resonators may have helped a bit. American car companies will underrate numbers on performance vehicles, for insurance purposes.
Yup
It's funny how Mike sitting on the hood just emphasizes how big that car is.
Or, Mike is a hobbit.
@@54mgtf22 It's a bit of both but still massive.
But what is the wheel power?!
Crank power on a dyno is purely a guess.
You could run two different dyno runs both recording 550 wheel hp. One will estimate 650 at the crank, the other 750. It's an irrelevant number on a dyno chart.
Only wheel hp is actually measured.
SRT Hellcats are rated at 750hp, there also a tuning kit from Direct Connection, sounds to me, like your Hellcat been factory massaged, measure the engine pulley
Stage I Kit (Challenger SRT Hellcat) The Stage I kit adds a 3.17-inch “Hellephant” engine pulley and the Stage I key code that unlocks factory-tuned, 50-state emissions-legal calibration to achieve 757 horsepower and 696 foot-pounds of torque. (Requires purchase of Pre-stage Kit) (Part #77073001AA $895)
The crank horsepower rating has never done anything for me, because the numbers at the wheel are what's important, because that's after driveline loss is factored in.
And as we know, torque is the number that actually moves the world.
If only factories would give stock whp values. :(
As the owner of a 6.4L Charger hoping to have a hellcat one day, this video was delicious. Thanks
Mike’s face when he sees the final bhp 😂
Not all that surprising. Mopar has a history of sandbagging their advertised power numbers. Still puts a smile on my face watching this happen.
Same here! It’s a little Mopar Easter egg
Great video and A+ presentation by all. Really enjoy Mikes appeoach.
That car's a monster 😆 🤣 beast,, them back boxes actuators opening,,, amazing machine
Dope American Bully, I love the color.... and thanks for trusting Imraan and EVENTURI, can't wait to hear the intake noise versus the Supercharger.... it's gonna be a crazy one 👌😄💯🇿🇦
I mean what a car though and the supercharger just unbeatable
hellcat swaps into smaller and lighter cars are starting to pop up. that engine is simply epic
I'll put my money on That import company did other mods to this car other then the mufflers. I'll bet it has a mild tune as well.
probs because of emmission regs in the uk, and then they thought well since it's going to drivetribe lets make it a special for them.
Actually it is stock, except that resonator. The difference is the fuel, UK has 101 octane against 91 octane available at USA
@@metisa0034 that isn’t correct. Just look up RON vs US octane ratings
98/100 RON is the equivalent to 93 in the US.
I owned hellcat for two years it feels like 750 hp it is very fast for it weight faster than the light gt3 rs so if you compare it with gt3 rs hellcat should have 750 at least to be faster
Loving the vids! Every video is always interesting
After owning a 300c, Working on one of these would be a breeze. Easy work.
I‘d say it’s due to the European fuel. In America they have to guarantee the 707 hp on “pump gas” which can be as low as 91 octane in some states. We get juice up to 102 here in Europe and supercharged engines really benefit from that… still 750 is pretty serious
Our gas stations do 87/91/93 octane in the States. There are a few places to get much higher (at a premium cost, of course), specifically for race spec vehicles. In some of those places, you're not even allowed to pump that fuel directly into the car, but rather it has to go into a gas can or drum. Super annoying, but we can get 110 octane in those instances.
@@brnktv our standard fuel in britain is 95 octane lol
In the US ocatane reading are different from European one (MON and RON) so you can't just compare it looking at the numbers
@@CXGTiTurbo2 thanks ruben, this is the right answer
@@CXGTiTurbo2 Yup, this is what I came here to say. I've seen this error over and over again, you can't compare the octane ratings of one country to another without knowing how they're calculated because it can and does vary from country to country. Also, higher octane does not necessarily mean more power, it just means additional protection from knock which can actually be problematic in engines that don't need it.
This is going to be epic once they're through with it
Very linear power curve. Flat torque curve too. Must feel amazing to drive on the street.
750hp and near on 1000nm atw, no wonder mike loves how fast it is 😱👌❤
Michael looking well classy with the stache!
The new colour is growing on me... like a rash which will not heal.
Look at the size of those tiny rear brake pads, jeeez how can you stop this huge heavy piece of metal?!? 😱
By using the front brakes which take more than 80% of the stopping load.
Except Imran said he hasn't done one before so how does he know what transmission losses to factor in to convert hp at the wheels back to hp at the flywheel? Also, love the exhaust vent pipes on the rear exhausts even though it blows out under the car 🙂
Aren't transmission losses calculated from the coast down?
@@howarddavies136 It can be approximated but not as accurately as direct data from a bench dyno comparison. That said, a figure from any roller dyno is really only a "On this day, on these rollers we saw ..." A different day on a different dyno it will be different. It is really a tool for tuning rather than an absolute figure. Always fun though, and pretty unnerving the first time.
Loving the new spoiler 8:45
I have to say, I don't quite understand how what sounds like a basic multi-point inspection is more than Mike would've expected.
US Auto manufacturers always understate their rated horsepower, Mainly due to the litigious nature and class actions but partly due to the long history of way higher power ratings in showroom floor models that anywhere else in the world.
Mopar has made a tradition of understated sports and muscle cars.....
I thought the tyre is supposed to stay in contact with both rollers during a pull or it'll read higher than it should.
just subbed a couple weeks ago, currently on a cruise ship for 2 weeks and absent from my highschool in Texas for 3 weeks don't really know how I managed that but I saw a rally-prepped Evo V in Guernsey today that was pretty cool.
Nice vid guys
Jesus that torque curve though
Something's fishy... That's 751 wheel horsepower. Even considering a relatively low drivetrain loss of 10% (most vehicles are closer to 15% loss) that would mean that engine is putting out 826 HP at the crankshaft, which is MASSIVELY over what it should come with...
I don't think it is fishy at all. In the states car manufacturers are notorius for under rating the power numbers of the engines they put in cars. I would habe been surprised and felt something was fishy ifit did not over exceed what is on paper.
There is natural variance in output between engines+ in europe we tend to have higher quality fuel than in the us so maybe the ecu can take adventage of that (or maybe its another emissions scandal waiting to happen lol)
@@MercilessGuitar151 It's possible. Decades ago it was common for them to underestimate the numbers because testing wasn't as easy or common as it is today, but now days it's far more common for US manufacturers to slightly overestimate the HP numbers than it is to underestimate the numbers. Even still, if the did underestimate it, 15+ percent is a huge underestimation...
I'm pretty sure the dyno is doing the math and converting the number to crank hp.
It says flywheel horsepower
Companies have been known for underrating their power output for insurance reasons. Hemi's are notorious for it.
Mopar was like a crazy grab bag of power, you never new what you had until you dyno tuned your motor. Also some for the Ford big blocks that went into their muscle cars and Cobras were like that.
thanks , Mike for another cool video! this car is a beast.
Germany has very strict noise regulations, so I would guess the odd exhaust setup is for that. An acquaintance moved to Germany some years ago with his TVR and got stopped by police and forced to "fix" his stock factory exhaust because it was too loud.
I mean, it's 707hp at the crank on the hellcat engine. If it makes 700+ at the wheels then it's not a stock car. Pretty simple
those are my thoughts, he even said the exhaust was different. it would be really funny if this guy goes to make a few changes and finds out they have already been done
I've seen stock Hellcats put down 640hp to the wheel. There was definitely something done to this hellcat.
@@TheyCallMeMrMaybe at 640 HP to the wheels, the actual HP at the crank would be around 740, giving the standard of 15% parasitic lose by the transmission. Several magazines have tested the Hellcat on chassis dynos and shown that the Hellcat is actually underrated when it comes to HP.
@@mopar_dude9227 I seen some where that the hellcat actually makes 800hp gross, but is sae certified at 707/717 hp at the crank.
Can't wait for bilals video on the intake that's gunna be designed for the hellcat massive market in America for it definitely worth developing
Not quite red eye power, so must be a hellcat pink eye 🧐
How long did you keep this car in the UK given DVLA limits keeping a car on foreign plates to 6 months?
Love your vids there so interesting
This dyno was testing horsepower at the wheels, but displaying it as "flywheel" horsepower. That means it was calculating some percentage loss and increasing the horsepower by that. What was the horsepower at the wheels, or what percentage loss was used to calculate the flywheel horsepower? My guess is that it was calculating based on 25% loss, and the real number is more like 20% loss.
I think they calculate in the transfer ratios (the wheel size, the diff ratio, the gear ratio), and some ballpark losses. It can never match the factory values. Only if factory gave wheel hp value, you can measure it and compare.
The Perfect Daily Driver
It's that additional rear spoiler that gave all the extra power. You should've accounted for that major mod.
Should check the M5 cs in the Dyno
Compared to overclocking experience - want it safe and fun and return to factory settings if everything goes wrong, important is how you access it. Software has a graph, but you want to see something close to views amount, admit it or not everybody is a youtuber checking that app. Don't ask much, but a fun ride with no problems to tell them it's a game and it's your culture.
um, what?
as a petrol head, that was a schving moment..
Was someone driving this car in Derby recently? I'm sure I saw it unless there is another light blue one around? Which I doubt lol
The color adds those HP! :D
What a beast! Love it
I ain't a Dodge guy, but this might be the only one that ain't a truck that I'd actually drive.
Something tells me Dodge plays down their horsepower readings a bit. I had a 2012 Charger R/T with just basic bolt ons. (Full custom exhaust, shorty headers, Legmaker Hammer Carbon Fiber intake and 85mm throttle body.) From the factory, the car supposedly csme with 370 crank hp. But after throwing on some 315's on the rear I was able to hit a 4.6 0-60 time which is phenomenal for a 5.7 5 speed.
Mods make a hellcat produce those numbers. There is something they're not telling us.
Thank you for producing an awesome and educational video!
American muscle and performance cars are notorious for having higher outputs than advertised. Traditionally it was done to lower the insurance premiums so more people could afford to buy them.
I expect more than 700 because fuel in the uk is higher octane than Americas if I remember right.
The octane labeling is different. 98 RON in Europe is about equal to 93 ROM+MON, which is how North America rates it. The octane levels and quality is about the same.
That made me sit up and take note 😳WoW😂✌️🇬🇧
Get those back tyres strapped down properly to prevent it riding the front roller… Have they been chatting to DMS about how to dyno cars?
Nice! My 08 5.7 still N/A is making 500, with just top end upgrades and no tune. Dodge really played down herpers on that one.
Could it not have a tune on it from the importer. It has an exhaust mod so could they have flashed the ECU when it arrived?
Sounds about right. The figures quoted are for HP. 707 at the wheels would be spot on. You are confusing BHP measured at the crank to get your 750. America favors the HP measurement and Europe used to favor (before Nm), BHP.
If ft-lbs and Nm had a fight in a bar I know who my money would be on 💪
As an American, I'm glad we limited the scope of the "telling the truth" investigation to this hellcat
Is it possible the resonators contribute to the hp boost? Reduced exhaust backpressure should increase performance.
The exhaust is sound regs I think.
Must have been the blue colour adding 34 hp more 😎
If they added some stripes it would add even more
That car has an aftermarket pulley and a tune. Those rwhp and rwtq numbers are modded Hellcat numbers for sure.
A possible reason for the spike in BHP and Torque is simply the fuel the car is running. American fuel by comparison to UK fuel seems pretty tragic. Most UK fuel pumps offer 95 Octane fuel in the cheap stuff, and 99 in premium fuel. Whereas America 95 is premium and 89 is standard.
With most modern cars having ECUs that learn how the engine is running and adapt to conditions such as fuel quality, air temperature etc i would imagine its quite possible the engine ECU has woken up to the fact its drinking some pretty high quality petrol and has adjusted the engine mapping accordingly.
Those are different octane ratings, RON vs AKI.
That colour doesn’t get any better the longer you look at it. Was it inspired by one of those 80s bathroom suites
Just installed my Eventuri 😍 (MK8 Golf R)
You got the plates mixed up ... the one with two stickers belongs on the back of the car, not the other way round

the problem is they dont have the rights to use top gear
Really liking the music at the end. Anyone know what it is?
U may aswell get a little stage 1 while u there 😁
Fantastic!
Another way to look at this is....a mercedes has a ton of mopar parts in it.
717hp at the crank, minus 71hp (10%) for drive train loss due to using a chassis dyno, Mike should have been seeing in the 645hp range. Seeing an extra 100hp is typical in an American production hotrod; all our manufacturers have been doing it since the mid 1960's to appease the insurance companies.
I had this idea with the filters to invert them more than 20 years ago... Glad someone has finally done it. It's just fysics basically
Please review their stage 3 m5
Possibly on account of higher octane and lower ethanol content of the fuel over there.
Not higher octane, their 98 is equal to 93 in the US. The US uses RON+MON while Europe uses straight RON labeling, which artificially make North American octane seem lower.
@@gpaje fair point but what about ethanol content there?
@@brettwalker5579 It was E5 until 2021, I think most are now E10. Though generally the higher the ethanol content, the higher the octane level.
I'm not surprised at all. Everyone knows that a new paint job adds at least 50 horses/torque...
The look on your faces was priceless.
