I am beginning to live like it's 1966. No screens, just reality, reading books and thinking for myself. I seek out people and have conversations. We talk about food, animals, hobbies, dreams and funny experiences. Life is rich if you use your own mind and get free.
Same! And life has gotten so much better since I did this.
And yet here you are, telling us all about it. On social media.
@@conorm8hilarious isn’t it
@@conorm8 Ya, that's interesting. Maybe they only watch Mark or something. Or it's bots?
What made the shift possible?
I love how you've grown and evolved from offering advice on dating and early life matters, to now taking on more controversial and impactful matters. I enjoy watching you grow, and growing along side of you.
What a wholesome comment. 🤙🏽
@SlrMarkManson I'm eager to continue to watch you grow and see where this journey of life takes you.
When you spend time online, you live inside your head. When you live in your head for too long, you start to go coocoo. That's how I see it. :) It just causes anxiety because the negative stands out from the positive.
This is extremely well put.
This feels spot on. Being stuck inside your own head constantly is never a good thing, and when we're on the internet we filter everything we see through our own heads. And sadly the internet is full of negative content because it gets more attention than the peaceful positive things.
FOMO is making us sick. How many hours of our lives are utterly wasted by our attention to news feed and/or social media posts, and we don't pull away, for "Fear Of Missing Out"
It is not inherently clear if the 'don't pull away' comes from fomo, dopamine dip after getting a 'hit' or whatever.
This shit is ruining my life damn. FOMO is real
We need less FOMO and more FOMGO "Fear Of Missing Going Outside"
Same with crypto trading
@@Pazaluz yeah dude just going outside talking to people, having fun, breathe the air ahh what a beautiful life maybe happened long time ago before the internet things
The problem is that this is happening to our children. Kids as young as 5 years old are completely hooked on the dopamine levels produced by technology, and spend all their free time engaged with a screen of some sort. I can't imagine what this does to a developing brain but my guess is the science in 5-10 years from now will report the utterly devastating effects.
Как миниму не нужно популяризировать в семье гаджеты. Максимально убирать (сломался, разбился, села батарейка, нет интернета, свободного места и т.д Проявите изобретательность) больше спорта, прогулок, хобби и т.д Это сложно для родителей...
Kids don't buy phones and tablets by themselves. It's their parents' fault if their kids can't even count to 10
I was raised in from a TV and I can see the negative effect it had on me. I am now 40 and I regret it every day.
@@akydan8405yup. People need to stop blaming the kids. It’s the parents/adults
Tech is not your friend. Always think about getting rid of something rather getting something new.
Everything you own ends up owning you
Always think about getting rid of something before adding more. The value of this statement cannot be overstated.
True, same applies for healh
Just because of tech, you are writing this rubbish comment 🤣
"Use it as a tool"
I love summer because I work in the yard and leave the phone inside for hours. Just listening to birds and wind can really clear the mind out, like taking a big mental sh*t
Yup, I'm addicted to youtube but have found some level of success from not carrying a phone around. I still go back to it far too much on my off time though.
“There’s a dopamine inequality between the physical and digital world”… damn, i was just writing about this yesterday in my journal.
I believe it’s in our nature to seek out new experiences in the world - shit, that’s what keeps us young. However, we must remain mindful that our device+brain sort of ‘fools’ us into believing that each new piece of content is a form of experience - it’s like we get the same dopamine hit from content as we do in the real world. Honestly, it’s a bit exhausting if you don’t take a step back every once in a while.
Anyway, cool video - stay mindful.
The number of likes I get on this comment will be the no of days I will stay without my phone
I hope you get 1000 likes😂
As usual, Mark is out here making sense of all the nonsense.
I was out in the woods in northern California the other day for 48 hours... no phones were permitted. No tech. It was great. I slept amazingly well and after the initial withdrawal symptoms ended, I was feeling great.
The 2nd best thing I've done (after quitting alcohol) is working out how to make my phone only irritate me for phone calls and text messages (because if someone's using that it's probably important), the constant demand of app notifications for things that if there important will turn into a phone call was just a source of stress, now if only I could do that with teams at work...
This is the first best thing to do, don’t enable or allow notifications except for the phone and text messages.
Wow I can't believe you have a job. You can't write even a comment that's understandable
I keep my phone notification settings very strict. SMS, calls, and Discord which I use to chat with my closest friends. Other than that I don't really give a fuck what my apps do and I don't want them pestering me for attention.
I keep my phone notifications very strict, only SMS, calls, and discord which I use to chat with my closest friends. Other than that idgaf what happens
I’ve had a couple of people show some disapproving attitudes towards me because I told them I disabled message/email notifications on my phone. They told me I should keep them on so “I don’t miss anything.” The reality is, with my line of work I’m not missing much that’s urgently important. To your point, if it was urgent and that important, it would at least be left to a phone call or an in-person meeting. Idk it might just be the introverted B-type personality in me. The people who have criticized my choice to disable notifications are A-types.
the face of the cashier at 3:49 😂 I can’t, it’s like she can’t believe someone would actually wear that while shopping lmao

#1 is what everyone thinks is skepticism. Contrarian is having an answer opposite the normal for a question. Skepticism is asking a question and not having an answer.
my problem with #4 is most people my age I meet kinda think it's a requirement to be in constant communication online to even have a relationship in real life. So it seems in some age groups you have to choose between being social and using technology less, which sucks.
It does but a decision will have to be made sooner or later- may you choose the choice that brings fulfillment and long term peace.

Mark, you're literally nailing, not only CZcams's algorithm, but also our minds'! Crumbling down info that's so obvious but we're f**in blind to see. Highlighting pain points, and daily stuff that overwhelms us all, using sensationalism on a really hilarious way, that makes us laugh but also gets us to think. And then delivering really good advice on making simple but really effective changes that can shift our life for better.
It's as if you're cracking every marketing genius' agenda while putting all contemporary wisdom in each of your videos!
Absolutely love your content!
Thank you ❤
super informative, well work mark!
Exactly what I needed. Thank you!
This is one of the most insightful and helpful videos I've seen this year. Thanks for your work Mark! A must see for everyone!
Great video!
I deactivated ny instagram two years ago, and feel better since. I have too many beautiful memories I couldn’t bring myself to delete it, but that being said I’ve also learned how to be more present and less of an anxious individual. I try my best to watch how much I consume online
It is weird that we won't be able to see this video without....tech. It is just so essential and everywhere
We wouldn’t need to watch this video if it weren’t for tech. A bit of a paradox.
Thanks for a great message, Mark!
I must say Mark, your videos are incredible!
The way you get your point across is second to none. And I'm extremely grateful for the work you do.
Thank you!
Wow I actually needed this
Perfect timing, I just bought a vr glass this week. It's perfect for working out (like cardio and exercises) I mean.. better than not working out at all. Just must be used purposefully.
Good for you!! Enjoy
I got my meta quest 3 five months ago, I use it for cardio and for learning the piano. Considering that five months ago I was doing neither, I'd say it's definitely changed my life for the better. Anyway, I try to go out at least twice a week and have experiences alone or in company.

Great video.
I want to give up everything online, but so much of my life revolves around it. I would have to give up most of my friends, and entertainment. Its for the best though.
This is some interesting work, I might doing some research on tech addiction for my senior thesis and I’ll definitely be considering these. Good stuff!

You are amazing , I learn a lot from your books and videos , Love the way you talk and express your thoughts
This could not have been timed better. I have been looking at myself and what feels like a huge dependency on my phone and wondering how to combat that and this was so insightful. Thank you! ❤
yet another banger, super important stuff!
really insightful video Mark. Make more videos like this. Love your content
Tech really got us on chokehold. I just want to be happy.
Have you tried NOT using it?
Like, you know how people will talk about how they quit reddit and twitter and are much happier?
Twitter's goal is to make you mad and keep you arguing.
Reddit's goal is to make you mad and keep you shit talking everything right of Bernie.
Instagram's goal is to make you insecure and ship you stuff you don't care about.
Tiktok's goal is to make you insecure, angry, sad, unsatisfied, envious, and distracted.
Pornhub's goal is to make you a gooner.
Video games goal today is to get you to say "One more game" for the next 12 hours.
Use what is actually useful to you.
F everything else.
Your second sentence (statement) is part of the issue I think. People just want to be happy, and they want to be happy right now. But they don't want to do anything for it; they don't want to take responsibility for anything.
@@9xqspx6 Exactly, the people who want to be happy all the time are the same people hooked to their phone screens
Mark thank you for all the work you do. Finding your channel has legitimately changed my life for the better in so many ways. I’ve learned so much from you, thank you!
Very accurate and very clever explanation
Explained very well, I especially can relate on the confusion and distrust of everything. That then equates to burnout as well as days feel more loaded then they need to be, which also equates to burnout.
Beautifully articulated
Most people (not just millenials and gen z) are scared of organic interactions. Even picking up the phone to order a pizza a scary to some people. Humans have grown to be scared of each other especially since the big vid.
I will ad to Mark's tips by adding my own. Leave the phone at home, most notifications aren't emergencies. Be part of your local community gardens and learn from experienced gardeners: talk to them. Turn the sound and buzz off your phone. Cut down on sugar, booze and shit food. There are many more tips like these out there.
Это правильно, если бы еще люди - клиенты вокруг перестали пользоваться мессенджерами, ведь они ожидают консультации там.
Mark is great. You're a gem 💎😍
This is the best video I've seen you put out so far. The way you broke everything down and then tied it in a bow was just borderline genius.
thanks mark.
Needed to hear this
Loved this! Been thinking about doing a whole series on similar topics. The be gets of disconnecting
I LUV U MARK U HAVE CHANGED MY LIFE ❤
Thanks for this fine video
I learned that engaging in (government) political conversations online isn't a good strategy, you can share thoughts and opinions or ask questions.
But the moment things become heated we forget we are communicating with other humans, with feelings and who might be personally afflicted by this topic.
Best when this happens is to stop, and simple say "This topic has become to heated, there is no point in continuing. Lets change topics". Keep these things until you can discuss them in person (if et all).
Yaaas!! Preach brother!!
Really really epic epic video.
I think i really like mark as a person. just a cool nice smart guy. great video. thank you.

This might be the most favourite video I have ever watched on CZcams and I have to say that I have spent some Gazilliaon minutes here.
I want this video to go viral and catch more views it could ever.
Hey man you know so much and I love your content, have you ever considered writing a book?
We need spiritual connection.
We need both interaction with other people and interaction with ourself,
Tech stops us from interacting with ourself. You are disconnected to you and that's not good.
So true. While I still appreciate a like for a funny comment or getting a reply. I quickly learned it doesn't matter. Appreciate it in the moment than move on. We're all strangers who will never meet and my self validation is all that matters.
Burnout also happened when we don't want what we do or we don't want the ppl around us. We lose our joy, inspiration and enthusiasm . We have so much attachment with our desires/outcome in life.
fuck you are describing me
how does this not have 10 million views yet?
This was (another!) good one!
I love the scene in the deli 😂
Mark Manson is just incredible
Great video, as always!
Please be careful on the boardwalk guys! That guy that used your headset is batshit crazy and attacked a SMCU student for filming. He was screaming at people all week until the cops chased him away. 😅
also everything is now only a vessel to sell you something, everything is a commercial, every show, every film, every youtube video etc. It gives the impression that the only thing there is to life, is purchasing things or services. Popular and "good" tech is determined how much it can sell commercials for
Exactly... While I was really impressed with the overall message of this video it was extremely disappointing to see him shilling a journal subscription (technology/app) in the middle of it. What's wrong with an actual journal?
@@aerobell513 which also brings his #1 point to some skepticism, if he is trying to stop contarian who make profit off of being contarian, why is he being contarian himself and also making profit off of it? Is this man doing this for the money or for the people, perhaps for his family if I knew he had any which is in that case is fine
Hi mark love from India
I love it
No joke, watching this inside an Apple Vision Pro right now! lmao I love this thing
God bless mark. And i agree. put the phone away and have some human contact.
That ad was odd. I would never journal in an app.
Other than that this video is spot on.
It’s as though you’re in the brain! Been thing the exact same thoughts for a while now and it feels good to see others coming to the same conclusions.
Its unfortunately just impossible to live without. I want to SO baf....
Our idea of connection is not really connection.
Technology is meant to be a tool, not a lifestyle. It’s become too much of our lifestyle. I’m glad I never fell too deep into it. I love human interaction, meditation, journaling nature, hobbies, etc. While I also love tv shows, video games with friends, and learning on CZcams and entertainment. I’ve been victim to doomscrolling and overconsumption too many times to admit. It’s made me miserable and panicked so I have stopped. When you think about it deeply, what value is it adding to my human experience. Why am I listening to a random human telling me how to think or live. Will the things I watch matter on my death bed? Something to think about actively.
I believe that objectively technological advancement is necessary and beneficial in many ways. Although on a psychosocial level, it is not simply used for the benefit of others. Social places of communion on the internet are being used to fuel billion dollar empires and industries. That is ultimately where the social moral dilemma comes into play in relation to social media. It could be all beautiful and great if money wasn’t be made off of people, if vulnerabilities weren’t being weaponized and exploited - but that’s the world we live in. The deepest truth you could share on social media will ultimately be used to advertise something to you. So it’s just about realizing there is a tier above those who use social media and technology to express themselves - a tier of people who are studying and watching our behavior in relation to the technology we use. Do people still feel lonely even though we have instant access to each other? Yes but this can change very easily. The beauty of this circumstance is it will lead to a spiritual reconsideration of what truly matters in our lives. We just can’t let the whole world burn to Hell before we realize as a collective.
I loved Covid for being able to do things online and meet people digitally instead in person. Not that I don't like in person, but this is so much easier. Anyhow excellent points Mark, you such a contrarian ;)
Sooooo true! Why is it that in this society, if we bring it down to merely simple living, it’s looked at as weird?
Thanks for sharing. It is true that technology cant replace face to face interaction. Maybe theres a niche waiting to be filled for the development of social skills.
Wow 😳
I might not of found Mark Manson if not for the web- use it in moderation and with caution ❤
My smartphone has it out for me.
Was expecting you to leave the apple vision on the side there as you walked away :D
Very interesting!!
It's a pity about the lack of in person contact. I've also found (via my own observations) that a factor that leads everyone to rather socialize online vs in person, is that there aren't really places to just physically 'hang out'
(Coming from SA) Being outside isn't safe. Going to public parks will get you mugged. Basically anywhere you want to go to (that's safe) is a paid place, and it makes me sad.
Also everything is so built up, there aren't really purposeful open free and safe spaces to hang out.
(Granted, people have gotten braver over time and it's not uncommon to be harassed by beggars in shopping malls too. It's all the time)
Where is "SA"?
