  • When I got offered a Proton 1.5 GLS Aeroback (Saga), I could hardly refuse! So, we now own two Malaysian cars.
Naturally, it's pretty dreadful. Join me as I demonstrate just how much. I quite like it though. Now I just need to get my Bluebird finished so I can crack on.
As usual, Ian Seabrook filmed this video on his mobile phone. It's just his life in digital form.

Had one of these in the metallic blue as my first car! Bought it for £100 in 2008 and scrapped it in 2010 for £150. I genuinely regret that. It was the toughest car I ever had.

not many people know this car but it is a diamond in the rough, As a trivial aside at Wickes they have diagrams of how to safely load one's car and how not to and the car in the pictogram is one of these or at least it was until very recently.
My ex girlfriend had and still has one of these that she bought for £300 and it has never failed her. Not once. It is on a J plate. The radiator has been changed. It does what a car is supposed to do it does it very cheaply and it does not let you down. To all those who snigger at them consider how much you have paid for cars in the interim.

I sort of miss the cleanly defined lines of the Proton and yesteryear's cars more generally, by comparison, many of today's cars look like blobs bloated on steroids.

My Dad had a J plate 1.5 Aeroback, I inherited it when he died, my Mother warned my that I would find it hard to keep the speed down on the motorway. She was right, those 1.5 Mitsubishi Magma engines are just designed for high speeds.

My scruffy Carlton Estate has cost me about £2500 including purchase price (less tax and insurance) over more than five years, >£500 a year, it could have been cheaper but i have lavished mechanical parts on it because its a long term keeper, New springs & dampers, rebuilt brakes, new exhaust cat back (sh*tty pattern part that doesn't really fit, Grrr) engine top end overhaul (because an exhaust stud broke) + various other smaller parts, still really cheap motoring and the most comfortable car i have ever driven, its like driving an armchair. wonderful car.

The model you show was sold as the Proton ‘Saga’ - I don’t think they knew what that meant in English !

I drove one of those as a courtesy car for a few days. It handled like a bucket of sludge, and followed white lines and road repairs unless you steered it off them. Looked in the boot, and there was a gap on each side that you could put your arm into. Both sides were _full of rainwater_ and various lost tools. No; I'm not exaggerating.

It had a head gasket failure fairly early on which I seem to recall was down to those GDI engines should really have been run on 97+ octane and nobody did. However, my dad's Maestro had HGF also quite early so I think its partly down to the way he drives (he labours the engine a lot).
