Sunak vs Starmer general election debate: Starmer refuses to deny Labour would raise taxes by £2,000

- Sir Keir Starmer repeatedly refused to deny that Labour would raise taxes by more than £2,000 for each working family.
#election #Starmer #Sunak
In his first televised debate with Rishi Sunak of the campaign, Sir Keir said his party would raise “specific taxes” and defended his planned VAT raid on private schools.
The 70-minute encounter between the party leaders often became heated with the two men interrupting and talking over each other as they clashed on issues including defence, the economy and net migration.
Mr Sunak said Labour would raise taxes by £2,000 for every family, the product of a Treasury analysis of Labour policies, although Sir Keir later dismissed the figure as “nonsense”.
In his closing statement, the Prime Minister said: “You don’t know what you’d get and neither does he... Keir Starmer is asking you to hand him a blank cheque when he hasn’t said what he’d do with it.
“In uncertain times we simply cannot afford an uncertain prime minister. If you don’t know what you’re going to get with Labour, don’t vote for them.”
Appealing to voters minutes earlier, Sir Keir told viewers: “Imagine how you would feel about waking up on July 5 to five more years of the Conservatives... the arsonists handed back the matches.
“Now imagine turning the page with a Labour government that rolls up its sleeves and gets on with the job... The choice at this election is clear, more chaos with the Conservatives or a chance to rebuild Britain with a changed Labour Party.”

We are all being played, these are millionaires and billionaires on 100k salaries, they are in it for their self interests.
Rishi is definitely a billionaire he is definitely not in for money. He can have a wonderful life without politics, starmer is definitely in for money
I think that can only be said of Rishi
@@neelamacwan7670 Rishi has rich friends. Whatever he does benefits his ecosystem.
Sunak does not understand financial hardship at all.
Rishi does not need the money and is clearly rich and not through his PM salary which is taxed at 40%/45%.
Not sure why Starmer needs to continue to increase the tax with a £2000 increase. At this point would it even be worth working?
I'm so sick of both of them
I'd rather vote for the guy who admit they'll put up taxes then the one who says they won't but end up doing so.
Starmer didn't deny he'd put up taxes... Good old Labour
He said categorically that he wouldn't raise income tax, or NI, and the only VAT increase would be on private schools.
but he did not lie!
He said on the rich not on working people
The entire claim was based on a lie - the Treasury have just said so... Good old Tories
Tory lies... £2k is incorrect. Taxes will rise at some point.. probably. But it's going to hit the very rich more if Starmer wins. Maybe he didn't deny because he didn't know the exact figures. Which is inexcusable for something like this.
They're both in the WEF. It's a sham. Expect more of the same whoever gets in.
They both have EXACTLY the same agenda, nothing of which will be good for the public!!
Starmer used to be in the tri lateral club. He may still be.
What do the wef actually want to do?
Both are puppets in waiting, waiting to serve their Oligarch masters
Just shut up with this wef rubbish
Don't vote for either of them
Rishi was pretty good in this debate, Starmer was like a jabbering rabbit
Rishi just blathered non stop so no one else could get a word in. All Starmer had to do was sit back and watch him dig his hole.
nonsense
He gas a plan.rofl
absolute rubbish, rishi kept on talking over him, being absolutely super rude while also being laughed at. No idea how on the planet earth anyone thinks that bloke won. If the tories get in then im going to be an illegal migrate.
I will Never Trust Labour the party that sold over half of the gold in the treasury which devalued the pound .
Sunak trying to lecture anyone on the economy is laughable.
How so exactly? seems to be doing alright right now. Growth is higher than all major european powers, inflation is low. What’s labour’s plans? increase taxes? tax trust funds? way to drive out all the wealth
He knows what he is taking economy

I like how the entire hour was Rishi being roasted and showing he is unfit for office and yet Torygraph puts up the only 2min they think they might have something to hit Labour with.
It's this kind of bias that got this country into the mess we are now in
The Guardian doesn't do the same for Sunak? There is a genuine point being made here about Starmer not denying something here.
@ilikepowertoolsStarmer was stronger than Rishi all he could do is spitting out his lies

It's been a very rough ride for 14 years.
Thanks to the Tories.
Rishi is a billionaire. He doesn't need to do politics for money. Starmer wants to get rich(er)
How anyone can look at how the Tories have used every opportunity to feather their own already substantial nests (PPE fast lane scandal?) and decide that are corruption proof is beyond me.
Where does anyone with a brain think the money will come from ? The people working or those that do not.
The rich. They have the assets and need to be taxed more to get it back in gov hands and thereofore the common man.
There are other ways of raising money (by the way, despite the Telegraph lying - it's known as the Torygraph for good reason - Starmer did deny the claim and so did the Treasury), from borrowing, to reallocating money that's currently being wasted, etc.
Why is there a debate between these two clowns, as though they're the only people/parties to vote for?
Vote for anyone besides Labour & Tory. Break the cycle.
Lets be real, these people couldn't care less.

Two heads of the same snake! Vote Reform people 🤦🏽♂️
But voting reform will allow an even bigger snake called Farage to F**k up the country even more than it was with the Tories
Reform are Tories, point me out where reform are different to a right wing Tory? The right got us into this mess so the logical answer is to go even further? How will that help?
Why would I vote the racists into power?
Reform are Tories 2.0. Their leader is Nigel Farage for goodness sake, an ex wall street banker who made millions from Brexit. As much as I dislike Sunak and his policies at least he for the most part doesn't pretend to be a 'man of the people'.
If I was involved in this, when Sunak kept interrupting and refusing to shut up, I would have walked out. He’s just plain rude and arrogant.
@@AtheistfanGuava Sunak was rude because he interrupted. Rude because he wouldn’t stop talking when asked to. That’s rudeness.
The worst possible moderator bar none. She persistently allowed Wishy Washy Rishy to make unsubstantiated claims over tax rises and consistently let him talk over Starmer. Before calling them both to account when clearly it was Sunak time and time again. This gig was beyond her, shameful.
Refused to deny? If he denied every weak, baseless deflection from Sunak he’d be doing nothing but denying.
Both are not fit to rule
Govern
They wonder why people are fed up with politics. I’m a young person that can’t afford rent, to live, anything, despite working my arse off … yet we have to sit and watch a millionaire and a billionaire lie through their back teeth for their own ego … fed up
Two hand puppets.
Who is actually any more convinced who is the better man here?
It was like watching Jimmy Saville & Gary Glitter arguing over who’s babysitting
Sunak talks over people and thinks that's how to win a debate. He who shouts loudest wins.
He's just rude, spoilt and tetchy
Agreed! Very unprofessional and arrogant
Sunak has to go for many reasons, but the main one is that he is risking WWIII with his madness in supplying advanced and highly destructive military equipment to Ukraine. The cause and history of this war are far from the way it is being represented by the mass media. Sunak would do anything to be PM, for weird reasons maybe to live up to the expectations of his 'billionaire wife'. The whole constellation is an insult to those who suffer from the results of inequality and neglect. War veterans are living on the streets with no help whilst Sunak and his Billionaire Wife live a life in plenty and affluence not caring an inch for those less fortunate. The question is, who actually does care, certainly not Stamer, but maybe the Reform party?
The Monster Raving Loony Party gets my vote 🗳
Simple, he won’t deny it because he is going to do it.
Now we know Sunak was lying it seems that Starmer was sensible in letting him condemn himself out of his own mouth over and over again.
Sunak looked Tech Savvy and set out a vision for the future , Starmer looked like a Dinosaur.
Sunak look like an idiot trying to defend the last 14 years of disaster , build his debate on lies his whole debate was laughable Starmer was better of the two
Sunak made a confirmed lie (2k tax hike) the centre piece of his debate strategy.
They really look like Wef Clowns 🤡 now after Reform Party has gained strength.

That's the con u snobby suckers fall for every time.
Sunak will do what he promised Starmer will blame Tories and make a mess
The entire UK hating on Sunak is a mistake. Mark my words, in a decade from now people will be sad about how the UK isn’t like it was when he was in charge. He’s not even a bad leader, the British people are not thinking this one through. “Anything to get this party out of office”, same happened with Trump, now look at the USA.

That's not what the evidence of illegal migration, economy and housing shortages tell us. Wake up to reality.
@@juliegwilliam8503I do like Nigel Farage. I just don’t want a Labour government that’s all. People in this country don’t understand the consequences of leaning towards the left.

No not a stronger but a more honest mediator.
The Labour Party is the odds-on favourite to form the next government, with a roughly 20-point lead in most polls. This won’t be a shock to many. Perhaps the most surprising thing is the similarity between Labour and the current Conservative government on key economic issues.
I’ll vote Labour , they are infact more Conservative than the Tories 😂😂😂, I’ll be voting for them as I did the Tories all my life , unfortunately we have Starmer at the helm of HMS Broken Britain

Sunak has my vote after this debate. This is the kind of leader that can get Britain out of the mess we are in!!
Good. Raise taxes. Properly fund the NHS and support those who need it. I'm a higher rate tax payer and I'd happily pay a little bit more to make the changes needed to unf*ck the country from the absolute state the Tories have left in.
My family simply cannot afford an extra £2000 in taxes
@@addy5572Considering the only taxes Labour have announced are on private schools, energy companies and non-dom millionaires I wouldn’t worry. He’s clearly stated that he’s not raising taxes on families.
We already have the highest taxes for 70 years! The NHS is properly funded, but not properly run. It needs reform, not more money thrown at it like a bottomless pit. Also there are too many people using the NHS who have never paid a penny into it.
A vote for either is a vote for the least worst option, vote for the best option, Reform.
