Apple AirPods: handy volume control tip

  • More details on how the digital crown of the Apple Watch can adjust the volume of audio played through Apple AirPods from any audio source.
    - I'm using an Apple Watch Series 2
    - The Now Playing app needs to be running for this to work. If you don't initially launch Now Playing, the digital crown will not adjust the volume.
    - To keep the Now Playing app running, in the Settings app go to General - Wake Screen and select "Always" or "Within 1 Hour of Last Use". This ensures the Now Playing app stays running when the watch screen turns off.
    - UPDATE - In Watch OS 4 the Now Playing app automatically launches when playing audio on your phone.
    - To adjust the volume turn the digital crown. If the screen is off, turning the crown will first fade the screen back up, then adjust the volume.

I have an iPhone XS Max, an Apple watch 3 with cellular, and a set of AirPods and the way they all work seamlessly together without me having to switch device connections is just amazing.
I have other Apple products in my home of course and my AirPods work seamlessly with them too, but when I am on the go my phone, watch, and airpods are a joy to use together.
Because my Apple Watch is cellular, I sometimes leave my phone in my office or in my locker at the gym and my AirPods just seamlessly without any input from me connect to my watch so I dont miss any calls and can stream my music and podcast without my phone, and when I get back to my phone the Airpods just synch right back to my phone.
Of course having an Apple Watch makes controls for Airpods a none issue.

I cannot use the telephone keypad whenever the AirPods are connected. For example; when I'm on a phone call and it says "press 1" for this or "2" for that, it never works. I hear the tone but it won't make a selection unless they are disconnected. Another flaw is that the keyboard reacts extremely slowly whenever the AirPods are connected. Additionally, AirPods are very easy to loose and Apple is making us wait for a "find my AirPods" feature. Seems like Apple wants us to loose them. They should have made sure that the user experience was better before removing the headphone jack on the iPhone 7.

I had a lot of trouble adjusting the volume of the AirPods on the Apple TV. I don't use the Apple TV Remote because it is too hard to use. I can't use it in the dark. It's hard to feel where the buttons are, and I can't find the touchpad without using it, usually with unwanted results, so it stays in a wooden box. I have been using my TV Remote, which is much better suited to the job.
Now I have found a use for the Apple TV Remote! The volume buttons on the Apple TV Remote adjust the volume on the AirPods!
