  • This video was not made originally for my CZcams channel, but for my students during lockdown. they had watched The Great British Sewing Bee and were not happy with the finished look of the little machine smocked dress made on the programme. I set out to improve on this.
    Martin is my lovely husband who helps me with close ups of me machining and just to clarify he was not actually rowing the channel but was on his rowing machine taking part in a virtual challenge. At end of this video I mention my next video will be on a shirred summer dress, this i will share next summer.
    I do realise this is not the original way to smock but everything has a place if its done well. No free pattern is offered.

      Ah thank you for your kind words. It’s something I’ve been asked for many times since I did that machine smocked little dress. I’m still thinking about it. The reason I’m still thinking about it is because I will have to make 3 videos to make whole dress as it’s quite involved. I will defo consider it further. Xx

      Hi Julie! This video was made originally just for my students during lockdown as some wanted to know how to do machine smocking. It was never made with the intention of making the whole dress as I thought once the yoke and smocking piece was done peeps would just follow the pattern instructions. Maybe I could do one but it would need to be done in 2 parts as it would be quite lengthy. Can I help you in any way? What piece are you particularly stuck on? I showed 2 patterns, which one are you using? I’ve also been asked to make a video on how to adapt a pattern for machine smocking. I’m so thrilled you were able to follow my tutorial to make some machine smocking. X

    Sorry if this is a silly question, is shirring with elastic different to smocking?
    Does your method of smocking use ordinary thread as opposed to shirring elastic I’m a little confused!
    As you may realise I’m completely new to smocking but I’m eager to learn as I’ve become a new grandma and would like to enhance a little dress with smocking ! Thank you for the tutorial. Your lesson is very easy to follow. 😊
    Kind Regards
    Bev

    • @felicityduke-sewing6623
      @felicityduke-sewing6623  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Bev, Yes shirring with elastic is called just that shirring! My method is used just with thread, I use Guttermanns polyester thread. My method of smocking is a very quick method and not the traditional hand embroidered smocking. There’s room for all methods though. Hope you give it a go, it’s very satisfying when you see what you can achieve very quickly. Xx

    What thread do you use for the embroidery I’ve tried double thread my machine didn’t like it, single doesn’t show up too much. I live in New Zealand but used to live in Roffey how wonderful to be learning from someone who lives in West Sussex!

    • @felicityduke-sewing6623
      @felicityduke-sewing6623  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi Norma! I had to look up Roffey as it sounds like it should be in Scotland and I was surprised to see it is near Horsham in West Sussex. So thread I use is Guttermann polyester thread, nothing special and defo not embroidery thread, the machine won’t be happy with that at all. Yes you are right, it doesn’t show up much but this isn’t like the hand embroidered real version. It does have an impact though and you can defo see a very pretty enhancement. My advice would be to use a thread as bright and dark as you can that compliments your fabric, and for gathering use the absolute best match to your fabric. Hope this helps. X

    • @felicityduke-sewing6623
      @felicityduke-sewing6623  Před 2 lety +2

      Hi MsSparkleyspice, I’m sure I could help you but I’m not sure I understand. There isn’t a seam that joins the smocking to skirt as smocking and skirt is all one piece. There is only a seam that joins smocking to yoke and that shouldn’t be too bulky. The smocking forms gathers for skirt. Please contact me again if I’ve misunderstood and I will try to help further.
