- Shannon Sharpe sits down with Akon to discuss the musical greatness of Michael Jackson and Prince. Akon shares his experience working with Michael Jackson: “Out of all the people I worked with, Mike was the easiest. He believed in what I did and wanted me to coach him. It felt like a real collaboration.” Akon also expressed sadness by not getting an opportunity to work with Prince. When asked about Prince, Akon said: “Prince was different because he’s a writer & producer. But I promise you he would’ve been locked in if he heard the music I had for him.”

Prince was a musical architect, scientist, engineer in that he created his music from the initial concept in his mind to the finished product (instrumentation, arrangements, vocals….everything) Through his talent, experimentation and thousands of hours of hard work he created his own unique musical expression. In my opinion, no one, and I include the classical musicians, compare favorably to Prince. I consider Michael the greatest too in terms of being an entertainer, performer and visionary. The two should never be compared, they are totally different.

The funny thing is , you could change Prince’s name to Michael in your comment and it would still be valid. People don’t give Michael his props because he couldn’t play as many instruments but the fact is he was a better writer, made bigger hits, had better albums, better dancer, and was in a different stratosphere vocally. Prince never came close to having an Off The Wall never mind a Thriller.

I'm a Minneapolis native who now lives in Atlanta. I was at Prince's last concert here at The Fox Theater. You actually didn't have to buy tickets at the box office. You could purchase tickets online. His last concert was just him and Piano on stage and it was absolutely incredible! I've also seen Michael once as a kid and The Jackson's Victory Tour. There truly isn't anyone who rivals them. Prince is my guy though. A true musicians musician!

His funeral preempted major tv stations around the world, to cover it! All major networks dropped their schedules and was on point covering that man's funeral! Both were legendary talents. Prince was a musician, songwriter and genius composer. That being said, Michael Jackson was also a great musician, as musicianship can also refer to the creation of music in general. Everyone knows that Prince wrote many songs for other artists, and fewer know Michael did the same. Both artists have written, composed, and produced songs that have changed how we view music. Rhythmically and Vocal Harmonization goes to Jackson, who never failed to arrange interesting beats and vocal arrangements. Composition-wise Prince wins, as his knowledge of the instrument itself allowed him to think outside the box more often. Regardless, both should be viewed as fantastic musicians/artists whose skills put them at the top of their profession, they even both admired each other's creativity. The albums Triumph and Love Symbol are my favorite examples of their genius.
Fun Fact: Michael Jackson was a very talented illustrator as well, and we all know Prince was a threat on the court. Both artists have talents we don't even acknowledge often.

What instruments did Michael play ?
@@Rob-qr2kn he ain’t play often nor was he nearly as good as prince in that department, but he’s been credited with playing synths on Billie Jean, as well as piano on a few other songs. There are also a few videos of him playing chords on the piano so it’s clear he at least knew a lil bit of that.

When Akon said that he understood why there was success. Michael Jackson was easy to work with. Prince and Michael should never be compared. Michael Jackson proved himself when he was a child. Then he took it to another level when he became an adult. Prince was still honing his skills as a child. Talent wise you can't measure that on the fact Michael didn't play a bunch of instruments. Michael in fact said he didn't need too. He knew how to convey his ideas to musicians. He was different than Prince. He was into collaboration Michael. Prince wasn't so into that. I had the pleasure of seeing them both Live in concert many times during their lifetime.

These comments are revealing a common misconception, which is that a singer is somehow not a musician. Michael Jackson was the ultimate musician, even though the only instrument he mastered was his voice. If you prefer Prince's music, of course that's a matter of taste, but talent and musical ability can't be measured by the number of instruments you know how to play.

Prince was simple when it came to Michael Jackson. No comparison. MJ’s dance, voice and music was perfection. Because of the media The United States didn’t get a chance to witness his increasing greatness. Europeans did. MJ’s best concerts were there.

Both were great artists and while Prince may be better in the sense that he could play any instrument, many people don’t realize what a great musician Michael was in his own right. If you listen to the original demos that he made for his songs before Quincy Jones even got to them, they sound VERY close to the final versions that Quincy produced. So Michael was definitely no slouch as a musician.

Michael Jackson and it's not a debate. People give way too much credit to Prince and his production, but his body of work is not on the same level of Michael's. Prince could have benefitted from having more help. My personal opinion.

Prince's musical work is more creative, broad and artistic. Their music is different. Prince's musical vision is singular. What you heard on record is what Prince heard in his head and transferred straight onto record. So that's why his music was so unique because it was pure. Whether you like his music or not is personal preference but Prince didn't need or want anybody else because it would have diluted the emotion, energy and greatness of his music. His music is a true expression of himself and to me that is success.

I am a musician and play multiple instruments. I respect Prince as a musician. However, I respect Michael overall more as a performer, singer, dancer and songwriter. I prefer Michael’s music, songs, videos, etc over Prince. Michael’s music makes me feel different. I have been to concerts of both Michael and Prince. I attended the Bad tour and it was the best concert I have attended. I won tickets to a Prince concert and thank God, I didn’t PAY for those tickets. I did not enjoy the concert at all. People were walking out. The next day the radio DJs we’re talking about how THEY didn’t like concert and really dogged it. The bottomline is about PREFERENCE. I PREFER Michael. It doesn’t matter to me if Prince played 2 or 20 instruments. It doesn’t matter if he wrote some of his songs or all of them I still prefer Michael as a singer, dancer, performer, visual artist, songwriter. I connect to Michael’s music and songs. I don’t do the same with Prince although I respect his talent. Just as I prefer Mozart over Beethoven, Gershwin over Debussy. Both Michael and Prince were TALENTED geniuses in different ways.😎

Uh, Michael's concerts were increasingly mimed after the Bad tour, and the quality was pretty terrible on the History tour, a view a lot of fans share. Some of the live tracks would have been better mimed though "Wanna Be Startin' Somethin'" always sounded rough sang live. The breathing was a mess.
Prince always sang live and sounded good doing it, and the concert experience was always varied. Michael was basically always the same.
I'd like to see some evidence of this supposedly poor quality Prince show. Never heard of such a thing existing. Did you make it up?

I completely agree with you. Being able to play multiple instruments is cool and all, but it means nothing if you can’t make good music. People consider John Mayor to be one of the greatest guitarists of our time, but his music is mediocre. And I personally prefer Michael’s music as well. It just clicks for me and I could never get into Prince the same way (I’ve listened to many of his albums, but could never find something that moved me). It could be the opposite for Prince fans.

I'll go so far as to say that being a Master of twenty-seven instruments, one of the Greatest Musicians that ever lived was Prince Rogers Nelson (1958-2016). BUT Michael Jackson (1958-2009) will ALWAYS be The King.
Kind of crazy how they didn’t get to live full lives. If Michael lived this is, it would’ve happened and he would’ve retired. I don’t know what Prince would’ve done maybe he was going to retire not too sure.

He put so much material out because he lived, breathed and dreamed of... making MUSIC! Not to mention writing songs for other musicians. When you are that talented, you master your craft. You write/compose/arrange/produce music, superfluously!!! His level of creativity always kept him receptive to reinventing, being open- minded and thinking outside the box. Prince went hard at it! He never appeared to be impressed with musical chart rankings, being categorized, criticized and or "put in a box". He came on the scene with thigh-high leg warmers, boots, undergarment and a trench coat. He marched to the beat of his own drum! He was a very unique artist, multi-instrumentalist and THE most influential musician of my time. Having a vault filled with finished and unfinished material speaks in volume, as to how much he mastered his craft and dedicated his life to his profound compilations and compositions. Some dubbed him as 'Mozart of our (modern) time'. All I know is...( IMO) when it comes to Prince, there will NEVER be another, this life time! 🙏

Michael was married to his music and his art. He wrote, composed, arranged and produced practically all his music, let alone his visuals and tours. He wrote his songs and other artist's top 10 hits. stop calling Michael "greatest entertainer" to play down his impact, he left a signature in modern music that Prince could never dream of having. Michael is simply the greater talent, meanwhile Prince made the record for the fastest drop in chart history when his songs were kicked off the chart the week after he died. As a musician Prince could do more in the technical aspects but for some reason Mike had the better music, Im talking about the tracks he wrote like Billie Jean, Dirty Diana, Wanna be starting something, Dont stop till you get enough it felt like his music was polished, Prince got to a point where alot of his tracks felt rushed

Michael on the other hand was the true definition of a public figure, a celebrity, a god among men. He was built for fame, knew how to handle his public image, great entertainer, great performer. He was a great musician to, whatever he did he did it to the best level ever.

I've gone through quite a few of the comments and I haven't yet seen anyone mention about Michael Jackson's talent with musical instruments, like prince he too played many different musical instruments. Michael play the piano the drums and guitar. Although people didn't see him doing this as much as Prince but he too was gifted in that area. People offend times just focus on his dancing and singing forgetting about Michael was an all around musician. Michael also wrote produced his own music as well. Unmatched talent and very savvy business man. Not taking anything away from Prince, but I think Michael comes out on top. But we lost the some of the greatest musical talent the has ever known. I don't think we will ever see that level of talent again. RIP 🙏

Both are exceptional talented supreme beings. Some may argue and say Prince played instruments but so did Michael Jackson he just rarely performed like Prince his whole idea was more dancing. Also he could imitate the sound of actual instruments. In his This Is It rehearsals you can see him doing that. He also like Prince wrote music not just song writing but actually composing. So neither is talented than the other. We just got to be grateful that we were able to witness their greatness.
