It's crazy cuz I'm born and raised in Hawaii like her... And now she's a Disney princess!!! So proud of her. I feel like it's kinda rare for people from Hawaii to get a big role like this.

Exactly! I'm kind of skeptical of it, seeing as it's being made by mainlanders, but hey Lilo and stitch was good! At least we got a local girl as the voice actress. Hopefully she's good at pronouncing whatever Hawaiian words come up.

+geebeepman dude. That is not what's gonna happen in Moana. Just because Lilo and Stitch has its setting in Kaua'i, Hawai'i, doesn't mean that it's a proper portrayal of polynesian culture. This movie is an independent epic of Moana's journey throughout Polynesia. It'd be as if you were looking out for Alice in Wonderland references in Peter Pan because they're both in England. They are in totally different time periods as is Lilo and Stitch and Moana, where Moana's story will be pre-western colonization.

By all means don't let me dent your personal delusions on a Disney movie. Though let me tell you how sad it is when a movie that actually captures Hawaii's brilliance of navigation gets tarnished by a movie like Lilo and Stitch that make people believe that things like tourism is all that Hawaii is practical for.
It's beautiful to see more minorities playing lead protagonists/starring roles. Hope the movie is good.

She's Native Hawaiian. There are only a little over 400,000 of them on the entire planet. Hawaii, by the way, has a population of 1.4 million, dwarfing the Native population there. No matter how you choose to slice it, she's a minority.

It's been the driving force behind wars, genocides and social divides ever since our ancestors first realized that those guys in the cave down the way looked slightly different than they were used to. When things are limited to complaining about representation in the comments of CZcams videos, its a sign that the issue isn't nearly as heated as it was just fifty years ago. Be thankful for small mercies.

Walt Disney Animation will similarly "catch up" next year with two movies, and then it'll be back to one movie every year.

she's so sweet! its so wonderful to see characters being cast and represented by people of the same culture. i applaud disney for starting this change, and hopefully they continue this way. it must feel so good.
You can tell the film and casting directors were genuinely happy here. I'm sure they knew that they were making this young lady's dreams come true in a big way, literally going overnight from unknown to international film star.

+Albert Munoz Horrible plot concept. It's two last newts on earth, and they need to repopulate the species. However, they hate each other and need to fall in love and make babies. Just like Rio, which is why is got scraped. However, they never thought of after. Scince there are no other newts/blue birds in the world, and they need to repopulate the species, well you get incest. Didn't like Rio for that reason.

It amazes me how much this resonates with me just because I'm from Hawaii. Every time I hear a Hawaii person go big I can't help but feel so happy and proud of them. I wish her the best of luck and I'm 100% sure she is going to make the best disney princess there ever was.

But to be on the same 'level' of the disney princesses, these ones look kind of 'out'... welp, maybe I'll get used to it one day.
Now, honestly, I can't for for a disney prince really. We had Aladdin, Hercules and Tarzan (what else...?), but they weren't really princes. Plus I always loved these movies above the other ones. They should focus in one. This generation didn't had one leading disney male leading yet if I'm not mistaken. We need one more xD \o/

+Huffle Kekos I sympathize, although at least Disney's CGI character animation is in the same style, as much as possible, as their hand-drawn animation. They take pains to accomplish this, which includes having a master 2D animator (often Mark Henn, who is one of the all-time greats) go over every scene, making drawings to help the CGI animators tweak the CGI animation to look right. Their character animation style is certainly distinct from those of other studios, including their Disney-owned sibling studio Pixar.
As for leading males in Walt Disney Animation Studios' modern era, there are Chicken Little, Lewis (in Meet the Robinsons), Bolt, Winnie the Pooh, Wreck-it Ralph, and Hiro (in Big Hero 6); plus Eugene is the co-protagonist in Tangled. WDAS have always been good in regard to female leads, and for many decades before other studios to boot, but they've never had a shortage of male leads, either. The thing is that for some reason people seem to pay more attention to and remember their female leads more over time, regardless of how much the movies actually grossed.
+Eric Zimmer Sadly they're only doing hand-drawn animation in shorts (sometimes), and only have a few hand-drawn animation specialists left on their staff. They still could make 2D animated features if they wanted to, calling back former employees if they'd be willing (many would be) and many of their CGI animators can also do 2D animation in the Disney style, but that is no longer part of their plans at this time. Originally they were going to alternate between the two mediums, but when Tangled, which started out as 2D and was forcibly switched to 3D by Disney's former CEO, became a big hit, they immediately switched Frozen from 2D to 3D, and that was pretty much it for 2D feature animation at Walt Disney Animation Studios.
They may go back someday, but not for a long time, if ever. It will probably be up to other studios, probably largely staffed by former WDAS employees, to bring 2D animation back into prominence in theaters, if that is even in the cards. Laika have directly expressed interest in making hand-drawn animated features, and there are other independent projects in the works, some spearheaded by former WDAS animators.

Every time I watch this, I cry. Lol! The mom gets me every time. I have a daughter of my own and I can't even imagine sharing this type of magical moment with her! The good thing is, together we can experience the FIRST Disney Polynesian Princess TOGETHER! Thank you Disney for bringing attention to the Polynesian people and our culture to the world (Let's hope it does better than Princess and the Frog)! ;)

Des Right! Sorry, maybe it's cos most of the newer characters are White (Merida, Anna, Elsa, Riley etc.). It also seems like most of the POC characters were voiced by White actors. Jasmine was voiced by Linda Larkin, Shang was voiced by Donny Osmond, Ryan Potter voiced Hiro and Daniel Henney voiced Tadashi. etc.
***** Ryan Potter is mixed white and Asian, so he is a POC. As for the others Idk them so I cant say.
