- Local girl Auli'i Cravalho returns to her role as Moana only this time she's voicing her character entirely in Native Hawaiian. (Video Steven Tonthat, Interview Nina Wu, photos Jamm Aquino and Bruce Asato)
Gosh the "Know Who You Are" song seems like an ancient music in Hawaiian. It sounds so much deep and enchanting. I'm literally crying.
Agreed
makes me want to hear the whole song in Hawaiian
It actually is an older song by Te Vaka, the tune at least. They wrote the music for this movie along with Lin
wow.. hearing her just speak about how passionate she is.. she seems so mature and grown! i almost mistook her with Lea Salonga!!
I was just going to say the same thing! She has the same sparkle and levelheadedness that Lea Salonga had at her age (17/18 in Miss Saigon). Hope she goes even further. Go Auli'l!
Yeah! For sure, she also really reminds me of Lea Salonga, and especially in her hopefulness/passion in her speech and her amazing vocals during singing!
I think what’s very similar about them is their passion! They love what they are doing!❤️
I'm from Ireland, and I hope Disney makes a movie about my island.
Irish is definitely a dying language as well, I relate to how Auli'i feels. It's kinda sad.
Stoned in Build-A-Bear workshop I'm Irish too and I was thinking that, like when she said she had been learning it for years but wasn't fluent Irish is unfortunately the exact same and also a very beautiful language 🍀🍀🍀
Aoibhin Magill Yeah, it’s sad alright. I went to an all-irish primary and secondary school, and I was pretty disappointed to find out that the language is pretty much useless and ignored when out in the real world.
My peers would almost laugh at me for it.
Stoned in Build-A-Bear workshop did they do "BRAVE" about merida?
yarixza mendoza That was about Scotland! 😊
yarixza mendoza lol thats Scottish, isn't it? I haven't watched it in forever but that's not Irish.
The guy who voices Maui seems so lovely
He is. He's a friend of mine (we took his mother's playwrighting class together) and both of his parents are also native ʻŌlelo speakers. His mother is a theatre professor at UHM and playwright and his father is a Hawaiian language professor at UHM. Lovely family.
Maya Ohayon he's going to do a great job!
K the guy that voiced Maui is Dwayne Johnson
wilsonnmak he’s lovely as well😍
But he isn't the Rock
I can't wait to hear this dub!!!
the manga was better
pengs100 x'D
@sky you realize that account is not actually Trump himself. It's someone pretending to be him.
@Donald Trump Um, stop pretending you're the real Trump. ☺️ Thank you! 😊
You can’t. It’s only available in Hawaiian schools :(
Auli’i is so well spoken! So glad to see this project :)
Raindrops Roses she's a terrific role model for young girls
Why exactly wouldn’t she be well spoken? Never understood why people say that.
@@SpiderManMCUniverse because she was so young here ! Lol
@@raindropsroses1088 oh yeah, makes sense, I honestly keep forgetting she started so young
She has such a soft speaking voice I love it
Her Hawaiian accent seemed like it came out a little bit during this and it’s kind of adorable
Auli'i singing in Hawaiian gave me chills it was so beautiful!
It’s awesome that they are doing the film in languages from around the South Pacific.
I loved that Moana was a mixture of the various different Polynesian cultures. Especially as I am of Samoan, Cook Island, Māori, Fijian, and Niuean decent. I am so glad they didn’t just focus on one Polynesian culture. I think it’s cool that they combined it together to create a whole new world.
Fenne Verrecas 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Fenne Verrecas A whole new world!
It's interesting that you would say that. I've heard a lot of Polynesian people say they dislike the fact that they combined the cultures because it creates a monlinth, or that it removes the nuances.
It should come out in movies again in pure hawaiian only with subtitles.
GiggleDribbles forreal!! As someone who's used to watching shows/movies with subs,I prefer when movies are in their original language.
Cheezukeyku does that mean you like English version or you like Hawaiian with sub?
thunderbirdice Hawaiian with subs
The Frozen Sing along went back to the movies. I would love if Moana did that!
Becuz Moana isn't jus based in Hawaii,it's a fusion a multiple different Polynesian cultures combined..
The guy voicing Maui is such a dork awwww!
Wow Hawaiian language is so beautiful!
Preserve Native Hawaiian language!!! To Native Hawaiians, please continue learning your language no matter how difficult it may be. Don't let it die and pass it on to the next generation. Keep your beautiful Native Hawaiian culture, language and traditions alive 💪
she really is a beautifully mature and peaceful young lady. i’d love to be friends with her. she’s done great work!
That must have been tremendously difficult to voice the dialogue for an entire movie in a language you don't speak...and make it sound natural! She is tremendously talented!
She's so mature and beautiful
Hoooly!!! her speaking hawaian just gets lovely'ness over the top!
Her voice is so smooth, and she is so mature and well spoken… wow
Dude she speaks English and Hawaiian beautifully
I don't care if it is wholly driven by profit, I hope Disney does more stories from other cultures around the world, casting locals and exposing the rest of us to the people about whom we know nothing.
she looks exactly like moana
Of course she does, Disney models the characters after their voice actors ^^
Bronwyn That's amazing
Well whats the truth now? :')
Susanna Link they designed the characters first before knowing the actors
Oh thanks for the link, very kind of you:)
I'm not Hawai'ian but I really want to learn the language. I'm so intrigued with Polynesian culture.
Kiarri Takahan キアッリタカハン E hele mai a e a'o i ka 'olelo, e ke hoa!
come and learn the language, friend!
As someone who has spent their entire life in a Polynesian family, (my name is Aukanai’i!) I invite you to learn the language and immerse yourself in our culture! ♡
Aukanai’i Flower Child I have Samoan family and they're such beautiful people and the culture and language are amazing
Ember Grey no
キアッリタカハンKiarri Takahan honestly i wish every one got to grow up like us.
I'm 16 now and my biggest accomplishment is finishing my essay on time last might
So glad that they did Maori, Hawaiian etc. When is the Samoan one gonna happen.
Jayde Kinkaid there's also a Tahitian version. I agree. Especially since it's the most spoken Polynesian language. I'd even volunteer to voice Samoan Moana
{sings} O A'U O MOAAAANA...
lol
And yes the Tahitian one too. But like Moana is so Samoan (its about all of us I know) but I am biased being Samoan. From her head dress to the villagers tattoos. Like hello Disney!
Jayde Kinkaid don't let anyone who's not Samoan catch you saying that because every time I've pointed out the MANY Samoan aspects in the film other Polys come at me like I insulted their mother 😂 seriously though, you can't tell me Motunui is not in Samoa. The houses are fale o'o which is unique to Samoa with the rounded roofs. There's even a legend about why Samoans have rounded roofs and the blowholes Moana runs pass during How Far I'll Go is modelled after the Alofaaga Blowholes in Taga, Savaii which the directors and producers visited during their research. Then there's the tattoos, the clothing because traditionally we wore things similar to the Tongan ta'ovala. It's evident in photography of native Samoans from over a century ago and even the siva that Gramma Tala and Moana were doing near the water is Samoan and not Tahitian like I've seen a lot of people claim. Hell even Temuera Morrison, one of the Maori voice actors, said it was Samoan 😂
Yes! It would be so cool to have the film dubbed in more Polynesian languages. Especially because Moana has taken inspiration from various Islands. She is not just one, she’s all. ❤️
avilik13 I’m Hawaiian and I could see all the Samoan in this movie lol
YOOOOO I want the Hawaiian soundtrack like NOTHING ELSE IN LIFE OMG
Auli'i Cravalho is a very lovely young woman. I wish I was as well spoken at 17 as she is. It took a little while to get to that point. But then I hated having to speak to people. I was very much an introvert at 17.
I love how her voice sounds, even when just talking it's so soothing
This is so fantastic! :DD ( 0:41 MADE MY YEAR!!)
Beautiful, talented, and well-manner, Disney could've not picked a better person to play Moana than Auli'i Cravalho
Her voice is so soothing
Aw she is just a beautiful soul! Some of these songs just make me cry, there's something very powerful and moving in the melodys and Auli'is voice 😍
god I am so gay and so in love with auli'i
God same
Camila Ramos fat mood 😔✊🏽
m ö ö d
She made me bi honestly
Camila Ramos SAME
When does this version come out?
Kassyyy15 Summer.
Kassyyy15 that's what I was thinking..... Wouldn't mind hearing the soundtrack as well
Christopher Rosas if you look up the soundtrack it comes up you just have to click on the right one
Jadie Elizabeth Harris Whats it called?

The French version of 'You're Welcome' is similar in it's translation for the same reason. It's 'Pour Les Hommes' meaning 'For Humans', basically meaning the same thing, I did it for you, but it's fine, don't worry about it, you're welcome.
Matt Vivian I was thinking exactly the same thing when he said that it would mean "I did it for you": that's not the first time it's been changed to mean that. (I randomly watched the French version a couple moths ago, just because I was wondering how they fit the words into the song)
This girl is so fricking fantastic.
Hopefully they can dub Mulan in Mandarin. That'll be nice.
Joshua Yang There's been a Mandarin version since the get-go, voiced by the same actress. ☺
You got to send me that link home girl. I'm late news over here.
Joshua Yang You can buy the DVD on Amazon (www.amazon.com/Mulan-Mandarin-Chinese-Barry-Cook/dp/7883700928), and you can find some of the songs in Mandarin here on CZcams. 😊 There may be pirated copies floating around the internet too.
There already is. I watched it when I was a kid
In fact, TWO versions of Mandarin--Mainland China & Taiwan. hell, they even did one in Cantonese! all 3 versions have had ONLY ONE consistent voice actor--Jackie Chan, voicing Captain Li Shang. & all that, happened like about 20 years ago.
the language is so beautiful! i wish they taught more polynesian languages in schools, it’d be really fun to learn.
She was so young here and yet so eloquent 😩🌹
This is lovely! It's wonderful that the movie gave her the opportunity to connect with her Native language.
I'm learning Hawaiian and I'm so excited to watch this
Beautiful I watch this everyday! Since my son’s birth I have been watching with him and he is 7 months now and follows every scene!
She grew up so much...
So proud of her
I'm so grateful I ran across your channel. And I LOVE the word plethora. Mahalo for using your words proudly, in both languages. So homesick!
WHERE CAN I FIND A FULL VERSION OF HER SINGING "KNOW WHO YOU ARE" IN HAWAIIAN?! Omg 😍😍😍😍
I remember a video where she was singing amongst her family wrapping presents. was amazing moana lyrics.
The actor who played Maui seems so nice and relaxed. I will have to watch this version
It's SO awesome that she gets to voice her again in her own language!!! And it's so awesome to know that not even she is fully fluent. And that she's so humble about it and not trying to hide that she isn't fluent
Just when i think I can't love her anymore then i already do THIS COMES OUT!!!!
Omg I've been waiting for this to happen to Lilo and Stitch, can't wait to watch a movie in the Hawaiian language!!
i love her so much, she's so kind and down to earth.
IM SO FREAKING PROUD OF YOU AULII ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️👍🏼😭
I have been wanting to visit Hawaii ever since I was a kid. The islands look so beautiful and I like the culture alot. I really wish I could go there one day. I'm from Europe but have never been outside of Europe.
Her voice is absolutely beautiful! I can't wait to see her role in Rise, as well! :)
They should make a Hawaiian language dub of Lilo and Stitch!
Moana made me want to learn Hawaiian. I only know a few sentences, but I can't WAIT to watch this in Hawaiian!
Her voice is amazing
This is so beautiful I’m gonna cry
Auli'i, I know you're 17 in this video, but you present yourself like you've been on the earth for 500 years. You've got wisdom, lady, and that's better that "academic" knowledge in the long run. Love this video so much. As a writer, examples of nuance like this help so so so much.
I just love the way she talks in both languages. She’s so soft spoken. I’m inspired.
I cannot wait to watch this version!!
she is so well spoken and sophisticated in both languages
I love they they did this and I really wish I could watch this version at least once!
i cant wait to hear the songs
This is amazing and Auli'i's voice is so relaxing and soothing to listen to :)
Haaa! listening to you give me goosebumps! Aloha from Québec, Canada!
She has such a beautiful voice and personality...thos whole cartoon was perfect 👌
I love her so much... she is truly princess-like in nature!
I can’t be the only person who was touched by this and thought about how much it really means to people to have their cultures shared with the world and properly represented! (Going to wipe a few tears away now!)
she’s so inspiring and has such a positive appearance 😍
I love this and I’m so excited for this i don’t know Hawaiian but I love the Language and the Hawaiian culture
Austronesian languages sound so dang cool. Although I'm currently learning Tagalog I may want to tackle Hawaiian some day.
Polynesian *
Hawaiian is hands down the most beautiful language on the planet. I cannot WAIT to watch this!
My goodness, she is a fabulous young woman! And I cannot wait to watch this in Native Hawaiian.
This has to be the most mature, well-spoken, lovely teenager ever.
A lot of people don't believe in aurasord vibes but as soon as you see her, you see so much beauty and generosity, authenticnes, and love. She's a beautiful soul.
That singing part.. wow, she sounds amazing
That's our island girl! Aloha & much Mahaloz! 🤙🏾❤🤙🏾
This is so cool! I hope Disney makes more movies where there is a dub in the native language of the country it's set in ✨
I'm so happy for Auli'i 🤗💘💘 I would love Moana in every Poly language, especially since like 2 languages (Tokelauan and Maori is the second I believe) are becoming extinct. That way they connect the children with the culture they are part of (language being a big part of it). Also because my future husband is Tongan, and I'm trying so hard to learn the language so I can connect better with his parents and grandfather (also, maybe he'll pick the language back up if I play Moana lea fakatonga enough 😄)
Kitten Dream There have a Maori dubbed version
She is so beautiful I cry
im literally in love w her also this made me cry a lot WOW
I learned some Hawaiian in my Ho'oponopono classes. You can learn Hawaiian almost everywhere in the world by going to classes/courses about Hawaiian Healing (Ho'oponopono), Hawaiian Massage (Lomi Lomi), and Hawaiian Spirituality. There is almost always a Sacred Space (Hale) nearby 🌺🌈🌊
It feels so good to see that this language is not dead but alive. I hope stakeholders and local authorities will try to ride this wave to give it more air to breathe!
She’s a blessing 🙌🏽
She seems to be so kind :) Her work is amazing
she is so mature!! i think she was one of the most geninue and beautiful people inside and out
Omg this is a language I really love and would love to learn! I really wanna see this dubs!! It sounds so cool!! I hope it gets released in the Other states besides Hawaii.
Use this app called mango it teaches you Hawaiian weird I'm suggesting this cause I am native Hawaiian but that is because the Hawaiian version of moana is not out to everyone yet it did just come out in June of last year so it will take long rn they are giving it out to Hawaiian schools I know because I live in Oahu Hawaii and I saw it if you wanted you should have came here to watch it on the premier in June plus its new its hard to speak olelo Hawaii the whole film so yeah it may take a while
She is so beautiful!
This is incredible!!
She seems to be so kind :) She has done amazing work
She is such a beautiful person with such a beautiful voice.
I love her!
I wanna hear this movie in so many dubs
She is so graceful and gracious, God bless her
She is such a mature, intelligent young woman. She is going to be powerful
I love how Moana is really a great gift to my culture. I also love how they stay true to the roots of us
