    Another idea for a video like this would be to have a very basic introduction to show GMs how to convert existing 5e adventures into these systems. I know that this might be a much longer video, so you might do only one video per system. Instead of talking about how to convert stats, you could instead talk about how adventures in these systems are structured differently than 5e, or what aspects of an adventure these games highlight compared to 5e that mostly focuses on combat. It's generally the GMs who have to do most of the work when changing to a new system, and a video like this could provide a bit of encouragement, inspiration, and hand-holding.

      For some or many of those systems here is no concept of adventure Modules. Dungeon world and Fate lean heavy on Player Participation with the players taking a lot of the worldbuilding. "Play to find out" is a term you will here very often, were there is no prewritten path the Session should take

    Hey there. Just popping in to mention that I've been watching this channel since darn near when you first started making videos, and the content/production quality has been outstanding. This should be a larger channel but youtube is the worst with spreading the good ones sometimes, especially in this niche field. I'll be here cheering you on in the meantime.
    I'm biased but Pathfinder 2e is amazing and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for 5e alternatives with more modern (improved) d20 mechanics. Fate is great too- I GM it every week with some friends. I learned to play Cypher from this channel, and had the opportunity to play it at Pax Unplugged this year. I appreciate the effort you put into making these games shine.

    Pathfinder is currently using OGL 1.0 so that people can use their system without paying.
    However, due to the recent debacle, Paizo is developing a new license called the Open RPG Creative Licence (ORC) in the coming months which is a similar thing with the added safeguard of non-tampering due to it being owned by a third party non-profit organization.

    Thanks for making a video that showed different routes you could go with Cortex when converting a D&D character. Don't know how indepth you are aware of the previous iteration of the system (Cortex Plus) -- those games were the games that introduced me to the hobby and first taught me what an rpg is (Smallville, Marvel, Leverage, Firefly, Hackers Guide, ect) and all those books are probably my favorite rpg books in my collection, first love + their all oop now. Prime though cool, one thing that didn't click with me was that Prime seemed to be really focused on updating the Firefly system (Attributes+Skills+Distinction SFX triggers+Signature Asset SFX triggers) whereas when looking at Hackers Guide MORE focus was placed on ACTION (leverage)/DRAMATIC/HEROIC iterations of the system. And I agree, if someone only knew D&D / d20 like games and transitioned to a narrative game like Cortex, the Firefly character sheet model (the one you presented first) would 100% be the one to go with --- but in my mind Cortex doesn't have to be a clone of D&D and your roleplaying narrative just as much as you are individual characters, so your second example, focusing on roles ect, completely simplifies the character sheet and opens up for some narrative creativity, in my opinion obviously. So this is pretty invaluable that you gave 3 DIFFERENT examples on how to cortex a D&D character. It seems ever since Cortex's conception there has always been people who have wanted to D&Dify Cortex, so these examples are really great (and Dragon Prince is out, too, which would be another take on Fantasy Cortex).
    Do you have any plans to make additional Cortex content? The system is not dead but man, there really hasn't been anything new or anything since Dragon Prince came out and the game went to Dire Wolf. I'm a KS backer, so I've received the digital spotlights, but really have never cracked those open (the overall visual format they went with never really won me over) to this day, however, I still crack open all my old Cortex Plus books and tinker and have fun.

    I'm looking at modifying some Old School D&D to Fate, and I was probably going to use Fate Accelerated! At least, I'm probably going to do away with the Skill Tree and just go with Approaches based on the D&D stats. Then I'm thinking Mantles for Species and Class, if I don't just do the easier thing and just say, "you have 'Dwarf Cleric' in your High Concept so... you're basically good at anything a Dwarf or a Cleric would be good at. Invoke accordingly." 🤷🏻

    I know you kind of touched on it a little but I have been playing in a Pathfinder 1st edition game. You're right, the system is more complicated and there are a lot of little bits and pieces that you can keep tweaking with your character but I have found that I really like the extra level of depth in the system. That said, the spells in that system are quite a bit weaker and minor illusion is mostly the same as 5E except that it's a 1st level spell and you need to prepare that spell specifically if you want to cast it at any point in the day, and each time you prepare it for the day is one less other 1st level spell that you can prepare that day. Though, a rogue would have a hard time getting access to a 1st level spell without some serious investment I think (I don't know, I've only ever played my tiefling wizard in that system, though we do have a paladin who can make himself large at least several times a day).

    Savage Worlds. *mic drop*. I've converted ... Star Wars d6, Top Secret 1E, Gamma World, Boot Hill, Gangbusters, Traveller, and obviously D&D. Super simple. It's a grainier system, but runs fast, clean and with a lot of things going on under the hood. Want Goblins that can be a danger at ANY level? Want suppressive fire that actually makes sense? A system that assumes all the little nitty-gritty skills your character may have (a la old school) are assumed to be there and available (Common Knowledge) - and this may nclude cantrips/orisons, and a clean magic system that avoids piles of lists of spells and has flexible powers that can emulate a power (by skinning the special effects). etc. Its a dream and I have been gaming for 30 years. The only other system that came close was D6 System. It can take a small learning curve, but once you get it, I can only describe it as "elegant simplicity."

      I can't speak for all of them, but generally the more "narrative" driven systems, like Cortex, could handle it, as everything is practically custom from the ground up. You just need the idea and put it in. You could even expand it more deeply than it is in D&D, but it does require being creativity to think up and hash out the ideas, rather than taking them from a book, however.

    Cortex is an amazing system, but it requires too much adjustment, in my opinion... I think that to master a cortex prime game, you basically need to be a full-time master. I don't have the patience to pick all of the special effect for each distinction, power, or whatever you choose to include in your game.

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Honestly, that's fair. I love Cortex, buuut I also love spending hours upon hours "systemcrafting" with its mods. It can be a great way to get a customized feel for a campaign you want to play that no other game quite does right. But if you aren't going to run a long game with it, you could easily spend a lot longer adjusting mods than you do actually playing the dang game lol. It is definitely a system that I only recommend with a handful of caveats, that's for sure.

      @tizianodematteis7071 Před 3 měsíci +1

      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide the system itself is good, though, which is why I like the games that use it, but come with prepackaged distinctions and distinction abilities (which, I think, are the most difficult thing to adapt). If I had to go for a generic, though, and build my game from the ground up, I think I'd pick Genesys, Basic, or Cypher, which are much more manageable in my opinion.

    Hey Klaus, I was thinking while you were talking about Cypher. If you changed the die roll in Cypher to be d10-based rather than d20-based, could you just use the difficulty as the target number rather than having to multiply it? I'm sure others have asked this before, in fact _I_ may have asked this before, but I forget so I need to be told again!

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  Před rokem +1

      It wouldn't quite work for a few reason...
      1. There are certain, uncommon times where something might just add 1 or 2 to your d20 roll. They are rare, but make small differneces.
      2. A roll at Difficulty 7-10 is impossible (requires a 21-30 result...on a d20). Those difficulties are there to be overcome with Skills, Effort, and Assets.
      ...huh, so actually, if we go with what you were getting at, a d6 could actually work, if you just did away with reason #1. And frankly, they come up so rarely, I don't think it would hurt the system...YOU HONESTLY MIGHT BE ON TO SOMETHING! Like, it means you can't take advantage of those 1-2 bonuses, but who cares?! It takes away an somewhat annoying math hurdle to give a 1-to-1 Difficulty-to-roll result comparison.
      Wow, did not expect to pull such a weird 180 all within this one reply, but you're going to have me thinking about this for a while...

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  Před rokem +2

      OK, WAIT. THERE IS A REASON
      A success on a 17 is +1 dmg, 18 +2, 19 +3 or a minor effect, 20 is +4dmg or a major effect.
      SO, the "crit" system is reliant on a d20. However, if you wanted to simplify that system, Crit on a 6. Way bigger chance of it to happen, but you totally could.

    • @StarkMaximum
      @StarkMaximum Před rokem

      @@TheDungeonNewbsGuide Yeah, I immediately forgot about the details you brought up, which is why I asked rather than just immediately decided to "fix" this system by changing a core rule. Sometimes changing a rule has far reaching consequences.
      But hey! That conclusion about using a d6 is really interesting! Honestly, the core of my issue was "I just physically don't like rolling d20s, I much prefer rolling d10s and d6s", and also I do agree the "multiply difficulty by 3" just feels like a weird stumbling block that gets in Cypher's way. I'm glad to hear you're excited about it! I think this is something worth our time to explore, so I'll do some studying on my own to see where it goes too.

    I am looking for a RPG system (tile based combat) for a living world/west marches discord server, which ones would be a good choice? Very often RPGs are based around the DM or settings, so it needs to be a bit more general and concrete. Most servers use 5e

    • @TheDungeonNewbsGuide
      @TheDungeonNewbsGuide  Před rokem +1

      Out of the ones I showed here, Pathfinder 2E is the closest to what you are looking for. Emberwind does amazing and more streamlined tile based combat (a little confusing at first, but really picks up speed when you get it) but might not offer the growth a lot of people want (at least not in the way most people would think of it). EZD6 can be tile based, but is suuuuper simplified. No character growth mechanically, aside from the gain and loss of magic items, but the system is super satisfying. Beyond that, I'm not too certain, but those are some options I would look into

    I honestly find the amount of complexity (a more accurate term than "customization") of Pathfinder 2e and D&D 5e to be very off-putting and not worth the time and energy invested to learn and master those systems.
    The FATE and Cortex Prime conversions look so elegant in comparison; even a non-gamer can look at those and get a gist as to who Buttbutton is by skimming through it.
    Dungeon World is more involved but the payoff is 10x more than learning D&D 5e or Pathfinder 2e, IMO.
    Cypher System is...there, and also milquetoast in game play (this I say from experience). It's more of a massive cafeteria than the elegant and actually customizable FATE and Cortex Prime.

    I wouldn't go to Fate Core, it's terrible.
    --It's innumerate. Characters seem to be living in a world oblivious to the laws of physics. No falling-damage rules; the damage you get is just "subject to the dramatic demands of the story" or some drama storytime nonsense like that.
    --It's a cushion for the emotions. No character has the risk of death. If they are close to being "taken out", you can Concede and, somehow, the Universe keeps you alive. You are in the control of the enemy, for a while, and the GM will even give you some Fate Points to reward your stupidity and so you can come out swinging in the next scene.
    --Benefits and drawbacks aren't scaled. Most games have situation modifiers that vary in size, but Fate's Aspects each offer exactly the same thing: a +2 or re-roll. There's no tactical finesse: if you charge your opponent or just apply some light grease to your sword, you're still going to get a +2 or re-roll either way!

    • @melinnamba
      @melinnamba Před rokem +1

      I actually consider all those to be features instead of bugs. I like that you can put as little or as much emphasis on realistic physics as you and your table wants. I like that you can put on heavy plot armour without having to completely change death rules. My group actually made pc death a soft limit, because we all feel that not having to fear for your characters live allows us to get more emotionally invested in them, so other consequeces gain more weight. And that's more fun for us.
      Your last point touches on something I personally don't prefer, but I don't hate it either. It keeps everything nice and simple. You don't have to memorize as much game mechanic stuff and have more brain space left for the story.
      Fate is amazing for adventures with a super heavy story focus. It's not great for more simulationist playstyles or if you enjoy that board gamey feel that comes with dnd combat. No rpg system is one size fits all. But that dosn't make them terrible.

    • @VanDavis
      @VanDavis Před rokem

      I couldn't disagree more. And I would add that your assessment of many of Fate's "flaws" seem to be based in a faulty understanding of how it's supposed to work.
      "Characters seem to be living in a world oblivious to the laws of physics...no falling damage mechanic..." etc. Damage is based on the dramatic demands of the story.
      My guy, there's a very simple mechanic in Fate: "Aspects are always true." If you are falling from a great height, and you don't have a grapple gun like Batman, or a wing suit, or a parachute, or a cushy padding of some kind beneath you, YOU'RE TAKING STRESS. YOU MIGHT EVEN DIE, which takes me to your next misunderstanding...
      Fate Core is generally set up to avoid character death, and instead encourages players being knocked out, forced to run away, captured, etc...but that's an OPTIONAL play style. All you need is table buy in from the players, and death is absolutely on the table again. If the risk of death is part of what makes the delve fun for you, IT'S AVAILABLE.
      All your criticism of the lack of finesse is rendered pointless by the fact that Fate is just not worried about numbers crunching, and is more about the action and the story going on. You can describe the damage of your sword strike however fits the fiction and the roll results. But the resulting Stress hit doesn't even SIGNIFY how bad a cut was, so much as how close the character is to being "taken out" of the game...by running away, by going unconscious, or (YES!) by having their head lopped off.
