American TV and woodworking Roy Underhill shares some of his history with Charles Brock on the very first episode of The Highland Woodworker web TV show
I've grown up watching Roy underhill and it's because of him that I'll take a break from my modern woodworking tools and do a project old school. I always feel like more of a true carpenter when I get out my great great grandfather's tools and really build something by hand. Thanks roy.
Been watching Roy for over 30 years, love his show. I wonder if I've ever seen an episode where he didn't cut himself... Thank God for people like Roy.
I just discovered Roy Underhill today, thanks to CZcams connectivity. I love his whole approach, the look - what style! - and the philosophy that underlies it. A great combo: looks good on the surface, and runs deep and true all the way down. Sound! Very inspiring. Thanks for sharing.
I never miss a program! As an educator myself I have great respect for his technique of instruction with entertainment! Thanks for the fun and information, Roy!
We can't get away from it you say? Damn, imagine my fainting soul when I moved from the country to a major city. I moved from a place where I could make anything from material that was just there for grab to a place... You get the drift. 10 years I've managed to survive in this state. No more :)
I agree!! I can't get away from it or would ever want to think about not having or being able to work wood. I am running out of room in the house so I will be building things for my 2 Kids & 6 grandchildren's homes!!
I love the Shakespeare reference: As You Like It, Act 3, scene 3: Jacques: And will you, being a man of your breeding, be married under a bush like a beggar? Get you to church, and have a good priest that can tell you what marriage is. This fellow will but join you together as they join wainscot. Then one of you will prove a shrunk panel and, like green timber, warp, warp.
Also living near Pittsboro, I would have thought the most common trees to come floating down that river would be gum, poplar, oak and then pine or maple. I have a bandsaw mill and wish I could get more walnut! Good video, thanks.
Hi Roy. I have watched your show for many many years and have enjoyed all of them . I do have one question that has given me fits. In each of the starts of your show you are going through the woods and over a stream and petting a dog. My question is: What happened to the ax that you have in your hand just before you pet the dog and when you pet the dog there is no ax in your hand. From a left handed woodworker, Garland Draper from Michigan.
Wonderful vision from Roy Underhill of the importance of getting back to working with your hands with hand tools! Learn the details of traditional woodworking here from a Master Craftsman: www.sustainlife.org/heritage-school-of-woodworking/
Did I hear correctly? Are you really starting a blacksmithing school? I have been a backyard blacksmith for many years here on the west coast but I have relatives in N.C. that I wouldn't mind visiting just long enough to take a class or two.
I will probably go to hell when I die because I look up to this gentleman as a god. I am jealous that he gets to do what he loves for a living and is probably a millionaire many times over for it. and here I am, 30 years old, still sleeping in the same bed I was born, raised, and conceived in. ive done nothing with my life except start trouble and cause grief for others. I wish I could make a living doing traditional woodwork. I searched the internet for jobs and found none. the only one has been taken and filled by roy underhill.
Look around for something you feel passionate about. However unlikely it may appear at first, there is always a way to make a living and alife if you are true to yourself and never give up. Good luck
Roy, a Master indeed, however he likes to pose as a "Goof ball" at most of his Woodwright Shop videos. If you like him, he's fun to watch, you may also learn something...
You know, before the schools went full retard on political correctness, many kids actually did carry afterschool activity items to school. Many kids actually brought shotguns and 22 rimfire rifles, the former for bird hunting, the latter for target practice. No one ever got hurt and if a fight did break out, it was done with fists and quickly broken up as soon as both parties recognized whatever they were upset about wasn't nearly as important as their now sore jaw. lol. Nowadays, you can't even bring a pocket knife to school without being treated like a terrorist.
In Shelburne Nova Scotia there is a Dory shop they build Dory boats out of wood as the old sailors would go out to sea to fish these Dory's would fit into a sightly larger dory stacked on a large sailing ship my GGGGGGG GRAND DAD went to Shelburne in November 1783 evacuating New York they went out fishing exspecyed to be out fishing WOR many weeks they came back to Shelburne 24 hours later with a schooner so full of Codfish from Shelburne knowl you could not fit another fish in the ship . there was snow reported every month for a year a volcano in Asia disrupted the weather for a year my Finlay McIntosh and Scottish Wife Christiania settled tow lot 7 near the Courthouse and a farm lot at River Jorden two of his brothers John and Alexander where with them in the 76 Regiment of Foot with Cornwallis at Yorktown . they all later moved to a 450 acher Scotch point in Port Jolly N.S. it is now Thomas Randell Proviental Park . There are tours at the Dory shop in Shelburne every summer where they still build the flat bottom Dory's .
Police APB: "Suspect has multiple scars and a open cut on his finger at any given moment. Suspect seems obsessed with Shaving Horses . Restraints advised."
I'm a cameraman, and there were huge problems with Sony cameras back then. They always focused on the background... especially when either the background was brighter, or when the subject wasn't right in the middle. Unfortunately, in this video, both were the issue.
Yes, a MASTER, in all his shows, Roy presents a lot of skill and also more "other" masters, his shop is always in a state of chaos and disorganized, I mean no disrespect to the "Master" but, I've never ever saw even ONE masterpiece made by Roy. In all his videos he shows some joints made by him Mediocre at best and some Sub par pieces that even I as a novice can do better, again, no disrespect. I have one request, can anyone point me to a site where The Master, Roy Underhill shows his masterpiece creations? Sincerely.
A moment with a Buffoon, can't take away his charm, a self appointed MASTER entertainer, who can't show even one Masterpiece furniture that he built with his own hands from start to finish.
It looks like you're a serious blind FANATIC disciple of roy. If you can't see beyond his mediocre display of handiwork and you're "fame struck" by his "funny" shenanigans, YOU ARE SERIOUSLY DELUSIONAL and that's the end!
Still exuberant about creating in his later years. This man's inner boy refuses to be silenced by the ravages of time. inspiring!
One of the greatest shows ever on T.V. , Thanks Roy for being so damn awesome !
His teaching never gets old.
I wish I had him for my teacher in wood shop class love his videos and TV shows on PBS. He's not a Master he's a god in wood working. 👍👍👍👍👍🇺🇸

Salt of the Earth Show... no electricity here but from Roy...
GREAT SHOW, BEEN WATCHING FOR 30 YEARS 😁😁!
Roy's easygoing nature and presentation style belies the amount of woodworking and building knowledge he so obviously possesses.
I never miss a program! As an educator myself I have great respect for his technique of instruction with entertainment! Thanks for the fun and information, Roy!
Very good! Thank you so much.
This is the fifth time I watched this and it doesn't lose my interest!
Awesome man! I really enjoyed his show!
A wonderfull character is Roy. When planing I lift up my plane on the backstroke.
I loved the Monty Python And The Holy Grail reference.
Met Roy. Impressive man.
I didn't know Roy had a school!!! Arrrgh almost every class is already full through the end of 2017 and it's only Feb!

I was going to post almost the same comment, I have to agree with you.... Great interview.

Translation:
Please tell Roy Underhill that he has a big fan from Brazil who would like to get to know him.
I would be interested to know more about Roy . Where he did his apprenticeship and stuff like that.

I thought the Underhills lived in the Shire.
Roy's brother use to be my dentist 😬
A "shake and a tap?" And the reason for that double entendre is? Nice use of the innuendo.
National treasure

Is the show still on? I miss it
Did I hear correctly? Are you really starting a blacksmithing school? I have been a backyard blacksmith for many years here on the west coast but I have relatives in N.C. that I wouldn't mind visiting just long enough to take a class or two.
What is he doing at 4:46? It looks cool. It looks like he's threading a wood dowel with a wood die.
Exactly that. I think it's sometimes called a screwbox instead of a die, for wood anyway.
I will probably go to hell when I die because I look up to this gentleman as a god. is he related to the baggins-underhills?
Clearly

Great interview but am I the only one that noticed the GAS WOOD SPLITTER at 8:15??
afireman32653 Hidalgo in a woodworker.com
You guys make great videos but you really gotta invest in an HD camera.
I only watched because I was positive that I was going to see him lose a finger (at least) at any moment!
Taking an axe to school , try that today!
You know, before the schools went full retard on political correctness, many kids actually did carry afterschool activity items to school. How 'bout black locust, as a common tree?
Roy is a bit special, not many like him now sadly :(
Why Roy really likes getting the students out to his place.
Free labor dragging logs out of the creek.
Who said it was free labor? Maybe it's sweat equity for their attending the school.
I'd drag logs all day just to hang out with Roy.
Police APB: "Suspect has multiple scars and a open cut on his finger at any given moment. Suspect seems obsessed with Shaving Horses . Restraints advised."
The cameraman won't win any awards- much of the footage was focused on the background.
I'm a cameraman, and there were huge problems with Sony cameras back then. They always focused on the background... especially when either the background was brighter, or when the subject wasn't right in the middle. Unfortunately, in this video, both were the issue.
I did it myself thanks to Woodprix.
He's a Master at never completing anything
If you're are the kind of person who doesn't like Roy...than I'm the kind of person who doesn't like you lol
Cops.
