  • It was an unusually warm day in the mountains and it was not so good for wandering. Nevertheless, we went on a shorter climb to one of the less prominent peaks. At the very top, unexpectedly on a smaller spruce, a poisonous snake waited for its prey. By the remnants of the feathers that had risen from his mouth, it was clear what kind of booty he was successfully catching. Good "camouflaged" and completely quiet in ambush. For the careless visitors like we were then, it's not a good idea to know that we could almost touch it when climbing. In such a situation, it is often necessary to help with the arms by sticking to the rocks and branches of the surrounding tree. The risk of bite of dangerous poisonous snakes in defense is so extremely great.
    Nose-horned Viper (Vipera ammodytes) is a venomous viper species found in southern Europe and parts of the Middle East. It is reputed to be the most dangerous of the European vipers due to its large size, long fangs (up to 11 mm) and high venom toxicity. Usually measure less than 80 cm. The most distinctive characteristic is a single "horn" on the snout, The tongue is usually black. Both sexes have a zigzag dorsal stripe set against a lighter background. This species is listed as strictly protected. It prefers dry rocky habitats, hillsides with sparse vegetation.This is likely the most dangerous snake to be found in Europe. Humans respond rapidly to this venom, as do mice and birds. The venom can be quite toxic.with blood coagulant properties, Bites promote symptoms typical of viperid envenomation such as pain, swelling and discoloration, all of which may be immediate. There are also reports of dizziness and tingling. V. ammodytes venom is used in the production of antivenin for the bite of other European vipers This species is listed as strictly protected under the Berne Convention. (shots taken from my archive footage - the Velebit Mountain, Croatia).

Plijen ubija otrovnim ugrizom.
(video arhiva: Velebit, Hrvatska).

    Wonderful looking Viper! I love Vipers too, even if I was never been able to see one when I lived in Italy. Here in Japan there is only one species of Viper and I can see them quite easily on Mount Tsukuba. I would not disturb them though. Excellent editing!

      In those mountains, especially on the sunny sides that face west where it is warmer quite a big population of snakes and vipers can be found. Perhaps the most common one is just that one - the nose-horned viper. People are afraid of it with reason for it is extremely dangerous especially in the area where one has a lot of time to walk from one to the other destination where no roads are available.
      These vipers are active by night, too what makes the risk even bigger. And what most would never expect they climb trees as this video shows.
      Thanks for the comment.

      I understand, the Japanese viper too has the same habits and danger, however there are no people climbing during the night so the risk is reduced. Thanks for the answer.

    Nice shots on the Velebit Mountains. Surrounding countryside ... Viper theme. When we were at Novigrad Sea at the mouth of the Zrmanja River, we saw the scent surrounded by small pine trees. When she looked at us, she flashed into the rocks. It also has a color that perfectly blends with the environment ... Thank you for the perfect description of the snake. I'm looking forward to more visions.I greet a dear friend. CCCCCCCCCCCCCC74

      The Velebit mountain is in fact the perfect environmet for that creature. I might say Nose-horned Viper is one of the symbols of ist wilderness. Besides there are many other snakes, too. That one is dangerous for it is not easy to return from the mountain to get help ... you know that well. We all have to be aware of that. I need to say once more that we have to respect our real status among all the creatures in the wild and be aware that we can't rule over the nature.
      Thanks Igor. Ragards from Croatia.

      This creature is, I dare to say the symbol of those mountains. I meet it and film quite often and that makes me glad, indeed. Perhaps such the living beings warn all the visitors that the wilderness has to be respected as it deserves.
      We are just a part of nature but not those who can rule over it.
      Thanks Anke.

    • @PavleBalenovic

      Ovo je ispala, moderno rečeno još jedna od "avantura" no u stvari vrijedno iskustvo za nas a nadam se i za one koji pogledaju ovaj kratki film.

      I just mentioned in my reply to others that I often meet that beautiful creature what makes me glad, indeed. It warns us that wilderness deserves to be respected as the nature in general ... we are just a part of it and that's where we still and always belong. Many of us lost such the point of view at all and turned to be "digital" creatures I might say not knowing that mountains and forests exist at all.

    Beautiful location and a beautiful snake as well. Would not have expected to find one at an elevation like that. Most of our snakes tend to be on the lower lands, maybe I have just never seen an adventurous snake! Great filming Pavle.

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 5 lety

      Unfortunately I haven't visited those mountains as much as I would like but during those rare chances I managed to film something interesting just like that viper. But it isn't something unusual because there are a lot of them and active quite long time all over the year even in those humid forests where one wouldn't expect them at all. Dangerous as most of people believe but they have the right to defend because this is the case when they would bite. I described shortly and shared some facts about it ... just one beautiful snake without which that mountain wouldn't be complete. I might even say that besides the Wolf and Brown bear, Nose -horned Viper is the symbol of that rocky area. Perhaps the awareness of their presence makes people respect the mountain as it deserves. Thank you Robert. It is really nice to hear from you again. Best regards.

      Nice to hear from you again, Colin. There was a chance to visit the mountains again with the same friend of mine so we spent some nice time roaming. Extremely warm it was even there high thou not as much as down in the continental part where we both escaped from at least for awhile. But the first night was unusually cold, freezing I would say even in the tent with winter-sleeping bag. We both even didn't feel well the next day. Something is wrong with climate no doubt. Not much that I would expect from such the trip but as always it turned to be samll adventure at least with some useful experience .
      Hope, very soon my old truck will get me there again and help me stay in the wild a bit longer. Regards from your friend in Zagreb.

    What a totally impressive snake is that Nose-horned viper. But, what was funny...Mark called me to see a little garter snake, so I left your video to go film this tiny, non-poisonous snake. Nevertheless, I once got bitten by this little snake and felt tingling in my wrist. Now, back to that poisonous viper; I hope your friend got some good pictures after you re-arranged the position of the snake. I can see that you were quick enough to get the viper coming down the tree...now, that is impressive filming, Pavle. Just breath taking! As usual, beautiful scenery, good editing and nice guitar music. All in all, I enjoyed your video.

      @PavleBalenovic  Před 6 lety

      ... I can imagine the tingling ... even I need not to be biten to feel that as you did. Especially when surprised. For most of us it is just the reflex even if we only notice or even hear the snake near. That warns us the rules of nature has to be respected. We should all know where to we belong and what we are just a part of.
      I filmed some more perhaps even better shots of it but that will serve nicely for some other stories that I plan to edit. I am glad that I meet such the creature again just as almost every time I visit those mountains. Hope people will remember at least some details that can be important about what can be expected in such the situations. Perhaps that can help the respect of the creatures that were not treated in the manner they deserved for quite long time through the past. (ywm)
