So as a eBay store reseller and a railroad worker I really appreciate this video. Thank you! As a content creator myself I love the creativity and thinking outside the box displayed here.
Heck yeah! Which RR do you work for? (ps…. Your content is great!)
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD Indiana Harbor Belt. It’s a short line RR that services industries in the Chicagoland region. Mostly owned by the NS. 👍🏽
Roger that!

So you're from hammond area?
@@whitecastle3032 lol. Our main office and yard is based in Hammond but I work at the Riverdale, IL yard. 👍🏽 I did work in Hammond for many years though.
A M E N! I've sold about 2k (qty) cards in the last 2 years on top of a full-time job, part-time pastoring and full-time family man. After staring out with mid to high end cards I was wooed into the low-end sales by all the content creators who do such a good job of showcasing it. Sheesh. Selling high-end, mid-end, low-end...all of it is a GRIND. Keep hustling and thanks for the fun and engaging content my brother.
Good stuff Philip - appreciate you tuning in!
New here✋ I actually dig that shirt, brother. I'd love to have a wagoneer, or old Bronco one day. Hope no matter what happens to the prices of cards, that people will still enjoy their collections, regardless. I love looking at my cards, as they bring back certain memories for me, of certain times, when i was a kid. I'll love them no matter what happens to their prices. Have a great day, everybody!
Love it. Thanks for tuning in. And yes...the old Bronco, amazing vehicles!
I could have used this advice about 2 years ago.....LOL....Thanks for the great discussion. Have a great one!
HAHA!
Man. Thank you for just bringing the fun back to sports cards. Even this video was just pure entertainment. I definitely agree on the comp point.
Appreciate it!
Well done Ty! Very engaging stuff. Appreciate you.
Thank you Mike!
Loved it.
Thank you!
This man went to the greatest lengths to keep us engaged!

If I have 40-50 cards to list I end up avoiding it like the plague to the point where some even lose value 😂 I completely understand not wanting to do all that work, I have a huge collection of 2-15$ cards I’ve avoided putting on EBay and I haven’t got into COMC yet so they just sit.
Touche!
I think the biggest thing you touched upon which is absolutely true is most people overvalue their collection. Everybody has a unique collection and that’s what makes the hobby fun. But that doesn’t mean there is always a buyer for those specific cards right off the bat. I always value my collection at 50-60% of comps if I ever sold it. Yes my Brady, Gretzky, Rice and Kobe will be liquid within days, but a lot of my 80’s/90’s rookies that I value (Gwynn, Duncan, Drexler, Brett Hull) won’t be as liquid because you have to essentially find another collector like me who collects that era too. It’s fascinating to watch when you goto negotiate with the seller regarding their collection and they have this crazy number and they don’t realize only a handful of cards in this hobby can be moved easily.
Great point Chris!
If you saw the horse-fly’s in the summer months up in northern Maine you’d never complain about mosquitoes again. And boy, do the hurt when they bite!!
1 of the most important thing about buying any card or collection is……ready for it! CASH IS KING! You always got to remind yourself how important it is to stay relatively liquid. I once saw a marvelous collection that a seller was reasonable in pricing. The only problem was the collection was going to take time to get rid of and it was going to cost me 3/4 of my cash. We couldn’t come to “the right price” but was happily rewarded when 2 weeks later a great late 50’s-60’s collection came up that I purchase for about 1/2 what the other would have cost. If I’d bought the 1st collection, I wouldn’t have had the bread to buy the 2nd without cutting someone else in. Within a month, I made my $$$ back plus a healthy profit while keeping 80% of the rest of the cards.
👍
Fantastic video!! I sell lower end sports card and it is very difficult to put in the work to sell theses types of cards but I do it because I enjoy the hobby! I think you hit nail on the head in this video!! If I decide to buy a collection I don’t look at the shiny cards but look at the commons and how I can move those cards. I had to learn quickly in buying a collection that it doesn’t mean I will make my money back and learning how to make good offers. Not every card is worth money. Enjoy the hobby and buy what you enjoy! It’s not a place to get rich.
Good stuff, thanks Manny!
I have a fair amount of inventory I am slowly moving. I completely agree with you.
Wife; I can't believe nobody is buying this stuff, you need to liquidate it.
Me; Remember when I told you we need to be patient in this process?
HAHA!!!
The beginning “why am I crawling in this grass” got me 😂
Ha!
Thanks for sharing the reality of processing collections. Mosquitos are bad anytime we don't have snow in Minnesota.

Over a decade in running a small business. (Non card-related) Started at 25, almost 40 now. So many of these apply to growing as a person in ANY business.
One of the hardest ones, that will only come with experience, is the confidence in your work to know that you don't have to feel like the customer/seller is doing you a favor. You're a professional at what you're doing (literally what that word means), it's ok to act like it!
The other one is simply: You can make more money. You can't make more time. Make the project (or the profit) worth the time, because that's what you're really giving up.
Last - and probably most applicable with large card collections - dream of the best! But leave that profit margin for the....not so best!
Great great stuff!!!!!
Some very valid points - all of which we should be reminding ourselves of when we go to purchase anything to resell.
Time is definitely the most valuable commodity.
I appreciate the honesty.
Another great upload! Thank you, Ty, Mike, and the team. 👍
Thanks for sharing!
Definitely real on the "inComps for Thee , not for me"" sentiment of card selling... As a usually low end card seller (3-20 Dollar range) comps are usually what I go off to determine whether a card is worth trying to flip, but just because you see one or two sales that are good , doesnt mean you can sell it that high either. Or quickly.

Do more videos like this!
Thanks!
Great video!! Really puts in perspective the reality of reselling sports cards. I thought it was going to be super easy process to get going. Man, was I wrong! So many variables you have to think about and watching your videos has helped me along the way in my journey! Keep up the great work!
Thank you Nick!
Love brutal honesty....
1. Yes - people do Get BORED at times with their collectibles. I love to swoop in and buy those types of collections...
2. I have over paid..but I did it due to the rarity....and quality. of what was being offered
3; In my world...collectibles (not sport cards) move in cycles.....what's up now...will be down....and then a year or so later will be back up. Do YOU have the patience?
4, He's right...selling is a pain...especially in volume.....I got some free card flats at the National when I did it.....I got rid of all of them...but it took TIME!
SMART MAN - listen TO HIM- HE SPEAKS THE TRUTH. Hell...I only had to deal with 3 FREE flats...and it took awhile to get rid of all 3 of them!
Wise words! Time produces patient people… if you let it.
man was this spot on, if only id had this information a few years ago!! GAME CHANGER!!
Thanks Benjamin... did we meet at a card show?
great tips, and better landscape...Which state is this?

Nice job. Resembled an episode of the Wild Kratts
Ha! I was going for the Wild Kratts vibe. :-)
Hey Ty, there is a card show in Spokane on August 12th, are you gonna be at that show?
Aiming to get out there.
Mosquitos, black flies, and ticks here in Maine. Brutal.
Black Flies???
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD you don’t have black flies?
One issue we have as well is people overvaluing there collection. Just because they have seen a Charizard card sell for 10k does not mean there cards are the same. It can be very difficult to explain to people
No doubt!
Do you sell at card shows? I buy cd collections and make my money back (4-5 times) online and then sell the lower stuff at flea market.
Makes sense... I do sell at shows. Wait... you still buy CD collections?
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD yep, some hidden gems. Plus it gives me tons of inventory for the flea market (and record show when I start to do them)
We all...MUST see the outtakes on that intro😂
Haha!
I am the rare success story in terms of not putting a lot of time into cards and making money. In late 2018 I decided Giannis would be successful so I bought all of his rookie cards off of Ebay, literally went in and overpaid & bought all ungraded copies of every base Giannis rookie from every set. I graded them all and controlled 18% of his psa 10 base pop report for select, & 3% of the prizm with a measly $12k in at the time by grading myself haha (I was 23 yrs old at the time so that was a lot of money). I sold those off between 2019-2021 peak to trough. Over such a long period of time some of the 10s I sold for $800 I later sold the 9s for $1300 but I also hit the peak on some of those 10 sales too. This was both to save me time and to not attempt to time the market, just sold off 2-4 a weekend. Long story short, I turned $12k in Giannis into $220k gross, roughly $145k net of fees & taxes. I'm guessing I spent 2 hours a weekend and 15 minutes a monday across 2 years doing that (consistency > all). Then during the pandemic, all the old men on the forums and FB groups were saying the market would crash in March as card values got slashed, I decided to be greedy again ( I hadn't bought a card since 2018) and put another $10k into cards then buying the exact cards everyone said not to buy, I bought a ton of sealed 2019 prizm cello boxes when everyone was hating on prizm base. These tripled in value over the next 8 months and I sold them all. I sold 3 Zion silver 10s for $4500 at the peak and I had the first zion silver 10 sale on Ebay at $1500 setting my own market too low. I also had some losses, low serial numbered KD refractor rookie & 2 zion parallels I held too long. I exited the hobby for 2 yrs 2021 to now and am now back as I think the market is in a stable place again. While the market is in a stable place again I am having to change my strategy completely as gem mint rates are SIGNIFICANTLY lower than they used to be (I tested this because i had an old grading 10s stack from 2021 I usually hit 85% gem mint rates on that I sent in and got 25%, same sample done twice) or I have just lost my touch & need it back. I love how your strategy does not rely entirely on PSA, who is much tougher than they used to be it gives you an edge. I think most of us who are "successful" at this just kind of grind away and never talk about it, I've never shared this with anyone but my friends & family. I am aiming for a six figure net profit between June 1 2023 and June 1 2024, I still have 1 or 2 strategies I haven't mentioned here that still work- lets see if I can do it. My wife is also a live TV line producer and we've watched a few of your episodes, not bad!
Wow! You did great! Your grinding like the vest of them.
I use a different system , when buying and have never lost or tied up my money for more than 2 months
You should try buying 6 millions cards.
I know with John's collection the money you guys made was not likely worth the time spent. I wouldn't have thought that when we agreed on the deal, but with the benefit of hindsight it's pretty clear.
At least with John's collection it involved always looking at AMAZING stuff! :-)
An R.O.I. in 6 months is incredible. I understand it is a lot of work, but any business investment that allows you to start making a profit in 6 months is insanity. I think we are a little spoiled because of what happened during the COVID era or even spikes during something like crypto back in 2017-18.
I was able to buy GPUs to mine and my R.O.I. was 200-250 days for a $1200 item. That is ludicrous!!! Think about traditional business or even investments with a compound rate of like 8%. It takes years and years. So, I think you did an awesome job!!
Another great episode, gents!
Fair point... except the "break even" wasn't factoring in the time invested to get there. If I can make an investment and just come back to it in 6 months to start receiving an ROI in 6 months... that's fair. But to WORK to get there for 6 months, that's not ideal. That time goes uncomp'd.... Appreciate ya Durb.
Amazing, always a joy to watch. Cheers from New Zealand. Now, how do I get rid of this massive 90s basketball collection :)
Thanks Grant! Haha! (Lets talk 90's basketball!)
Love it thanks for sharing
You got it!

Something like that!
What convinced you to make that intro haha
😂😂😂😂😂
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD better check for ticks lol
We get the same questions too. If you want to sell the collection yourself best of luck. Explaining to someone that they are going to put 50 hours in just to research the items let alone, list, photograph, ship etc
100%
Ty! Be careful, you’re underneath a highway!
Ha!
Xlnt video on all fronts. Engaging and good pts. I've been dealing since 1992, right after the peak of the hobby at the 1991 National. I realized after a couple of years that I had to narrow my focus b/c of the time involved (particularly b/c I had a real job). That focus has continually narrowed so that now I'm only buying about 3-4 proven names in bulk. Become an expert in something and your time will be used more efficiently. Always be looking for building your contacts in your specialty..... stay in touch and be a friend to them in helping them out even though you may not make $$$ then.
Great wisdom and advice!
Hey Ty, What do you think of the idea of grading companies putting a QR code on the case, which would take you to a CZcams video of that specific moment in sports history? I think it would add to the display aspect. Everyone has a smart phone that could easily pull the video up.
Would be pretty sweet!
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD How do we sell this idea to PSA? LMAO
I’m just a high recognizable HOF collector… so buying a whole collection from someone prolly means alot of lower tier HOF’s and commons.. so for me buying a collection is not woth the work to sell those lower tier cards.. I think u would love to buy my collection becuase they are all high tier HOF’s in all sports… maybe some day I’ll give u a call when I’m done.. :)
Can’t wait!
This is a great video. Will you guys be at the National?
Thanks! Yes, we should be there!
@CHASINGCARDBOARD Will you have a table or just walking around?
My bro! Thought you was gonna go under those logs lol
You know it Lil J!

HAHA! Great idea for a future video... ;-)
Great episode as always Ty!
Thanks Omar!
Fun video Ty great points 🤙🏻🤙🏻
Glad you enjoyed it
Another great video thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching
Why on earth did it take you 6 months to break even? Was their not enough liquid cards to flip in a week or two to cover the 15k?
what about the other persons Time it took to Build those Collection... 6 months Vs 25 --30 years is a Very low %
What does that have to do with me?
Great video but you forgot #5 check for ticks.
😂
Great insights!!
Glad you think so!
Price your stuff right and it sells. If it's not then it'll sit. Buying nice cards isn't always money in the bank unfortunately.
Even at the right price... in this market... it might not move.
@@CHASINGCARDBOARD Of course. If you're trying to sell Nick Senzel instead Of Elly.

We’re working on them. Lots of cool stuff coming. Stay tuned.

I get the chigger cringe watching you call in that grass. Great video!!
Oh I got that chigger cringe as well. ;-)
If ty had a rock band, their debut album would be titled 'running on gravel' can't wait for it's release.
Haha
How many ticks did you get crawling around in there?
Few. Haha
Shipping is like changing diapers, it’s scary but not nearly as bad as people say.
Good analogy
6 months to get to the break even point doesn't sound bad tooo me. That says that from that point on, you are making money. I know it still requires time to sell on the positive side but still, you're making money on your investment. Not bad.
If you were getting paid during that 6 months...it might be more lucrative. :-)
Great advice here.
Thanks Chipper!
on several occasions, chris of sports card investor and collector, as shown how he's purchased cards on his channel.
Okay?

40k to 60k cards a year u sell ?? OMG.. that is brutal…. I dont know how u do that…… i cannot image the amount of time to do that.. with that many cards I”m sure u get many people that dont pay or want a return… and converse with them… I cannot image doing that...

Your problem is your more interested in making good videos in CZcams than knowing how to make money in cards. You either want to make money on CZcams or make money in cards. Granted you new in this business, but your not making good decisions in buying collections IMO.
