- Downwell seemed to come out of nowhere and pleasantly surprised me with how fun it is. It's only $3 and is ABSOLUTELY worth checking out if you like roguelikes or Spelunky!

I have Downwell on iPad, and I think it's one of the best mobile games I've ever played. The controls are optimized for mobile better than most games that rely on reflexes, and it has practically infinite replay value. I don't even know if I would like the game as much if I was playing it on PC.

levitate style is literally the only style that's a straight upgrade from normal. Every other style has some sort of drawback BUT levitate. Once you unlock it, there's literally no reason to ever use normal style again.

Levitate is annoying to me... I always wind up bouncing too high, usually right into an incoming bat or spike.
Slower descent is an advantage and a drawback (but mostly an advantage). While the extra control is nice, it does slow you down and can make outrunning some of the flying enemies you missed trickier.
Arm spin is also straight up busted, you lose shops and don't get as much gems, but those become irrelevant because of the sheer quantity of wall upgrades you get. It's not uncommon for me to have 6 or 7 HP coming into aquifier with that style

Not the best rogue style ever, but the music and combos make it worth it. And for $3, there isn't a reason to not own it. Great video as always, sno.

I'm an hour in and reached level 2-1 for the first time
I just got to the final boss for the first time today. It was also the first time I got to limbo. If you use arm spin style, the game legit gets easier the further you go. I got all the way through Limbo on my first try.
Still can't beat that boss though...

You can control the way it shoots to go either left or right based on the direction you're holding, so you can progress down carefully due to the low ammo cost and also control whether or not you want to hit the enemy or bounce on them by choosing how you fire at them as you descend toward them. It's seriously the best item in the game, and you can get super huge combos to get even more ammo to get through the game even more easily.
I wouldn't call it the best, but it's certainly very handy. I'm a shotgun fan myself.
I like noppy too, but my favourite is laser. It just feels awsome, if you have enought ammo or jetboots. Burst is the worst
If I moving to the left so that I can bounce on an enemy and I'm shooting so that I stay in the air long enough to be able to move above the enemy, the noppy will end up killing the enemy before I can reach it, which means that I can't land on the enemy and so I'll be out of ammo as I plummet downward, most likely leading to the end of my combo.

mm, yeah, I find it awkward to write in first person most of the time, so I'll write in second person a lot even when it doesn't really make sense. In this situation first person actually works decently well, so I edited my comment to make it first person.
Hearing you and the guys talk about how fun this game is really tempts me to buy it. I love creative gameplay, and this doesn't seem to be one that will disappoint. Great video sno! I keep wanting to buy the games you make videos on hahaha.

Just completed the game today and boy, dying felt frustrating but BOY it felt so rewarding when I finally beat the boss
That intro..throws me back to a time where Michael Mittermeier was at the height of his popularity. He is a pretty smart german comedian (yes, those exist), and a Lassi-sketch was a popular part of his early programms.
Getting that very specific reference out of the way and on to the game itself: Its definitely on my to-get list. Devolver sure knows to pick good games to publish. Looks like a blast to play (literary)
The palette-swap option reminds me of another one of their published games,Luftrauser, an arcade-shooter with equaly simple graphics and surprisingly addicting gameplay.Even one of the booster-variants is similar, where you propell yourself forward by shooting bullets out of the back. Pretty fun.

I loved Downwell when I played it. Every enemy that you successfully stomp on makes you feel good and all the movements and weapons are satisfying.

Even though I like the genre, this game didn't drew me in a whole lot particularly because of the repetitive gameplay and the steep learning curve. I got bored before reaching lvl 3 lol

for its price point it is worth a buy. quick game to get into.
my favorite style is the one that makes shops harder to find, but makes the gun power ups more common, it makes it so you have a better chance of getting health upgrades and more ammo upgrades, and if you do find a shop you usually can afford everything in there because you're forced to save your money.

Hello from 2023!! Discovered this game in 2016 and proceeded to buy it on Android/iOS, PS Vita/PS4, Switch, and PC. I'm still holding my breath for an Xbox port.

Its addicting
My favorite style is arm spin tbh... If you know what you're doing and get the right upgrades, you can get super tanky and super loaded with charge and health before even getting to the catacombs.
Had it for a few weeks. I can't get very far in it, but I enjoy very much.

You forgot to mention that Downwell has an upgrade that allows you to _eat the corpses of your enemies for health_
I still didn't beat the final boss, even though I'm always decked out with health and ammo, best weapons, this guy is just ridiculously hard.

I love this game, i found It thanks to gmtk.
One detail that impressed me was the control: A and D to move left and right, and "right shift" ti shoot. One hand to move and one to shoot. Was like playing an old arcade, It was awsome. It give that feeling like metal slug, asteroids, the one that you have to make the frog cross the street.
It is a next gen arcade game.
It leans pretty well into arcade feel! you can also use space to fart bullet...i think you meant frogger.

I like this game a lot, just cannot seem to beat hard mode, all I have left for the platinum but yeah... lol. I have seen videos of people getting full combos and unlocking secrets but they require a lot of skill and if I ever did beat hard mode, I might go back to normal and see if I can get some of these secrets haha.

Weird I didn't read that much into it..other than light, and pretty fun!
shotgun is great if you have the gems to bullets perk. and you can use it as a boost cuz instead of slowing your decent it can actually push you up. so if you have gems to bullets its amazing. otherwise its only ok
Bought it on phone after seeing your video about it, and play it every day since, but still can't get past 3-1
I love this game, but the difficulty curve is a bit off imo. Had a really tough time getting to Aquifer and I did die my first few times but after getting past 3-1 I made it all the way to the final boss in one run (which I still haven't beat, dude's tough)
Okay, I kinda had the same experience. The first few levels are rough but once I got to Aquifer I had the same experience, it seemed to let up a bit. But I think a big difference is that I'm trying to go for big combos and stuff in the first few areas, but once I get to Aquifer I'm just focused on surviving, so it might seem a little easier because I'm not trying to be suave about it, just getting to the bottom.
5:05 I’m the opposite, I found combos much easier to rack up in the third and fourth areas because of the lack of ground
the game is great to me just really hard and challenging and since i am a little baby it took me 1 year and 5 months to complete.

I didn't know this game was so old, I recently just found it out and fuck I'm addicted ;_;
Played it it's amazing
Downwell is fun, but it has a few stupid design issues:
1. in a gem sideroom, shooting the gem pile and collecting the gems is just annoying busywork and unnecessary downtime
2. Some upgrades are clearly better than others. Getting health back every few enemies killed is stupidly good especially for beginners.
3. you can't start the game in later levels, so you will always have practiced those less than the first levels. So you easily beat the first few levels, then struggle with the later ones and have to restart with the easy levels again for another try. this is a problem affecting most roguelikes.
4. I didn't even know there was a combo mechanic in this game. How was i supposed to find that out?

5. most color palettes have horrible contrast, the standard one is probably strictly the best.
+Simon Piano I will agree most of the color palettes are just trash lol, but I think the rest are all fine. The downtime is actually a nice break from the mayhem of the normal game, if it was 100% intense the whole time, you would get carpel tunnel lol.
yeah i agree the downtime can be nice to relax when you're stressed, but the gem collection is still completely useless mechanically, and i hate it when the gems spread so much that i have to jump around all over the place to collect them.
well, i guess i'll just have to take it as a relaxing break ;)
haha no i know what you mean, the gems serve a small purpose, really just for the shop. I dont really get the point of "Gem High"

_Most_ of the palettes make me want to gouge my eyes out.
This is a problem, because a game that requires split-second decisions and has some iffy collision detection really doesn't need to induce eye strain.
And did we really need a wall jump implemented in a way that makes it randomly activate without you wanting it to, causing you to leap directly into enemies and dying? Did our character's collision box need to be so much wider than those of the bullets - how many times have you lost a combo because you shot a hole in the floor but landed on the edge of it?
I do like this game, but it feels like not enough time went into balancing and polishing it.
+Camkitsune I actually agree with most of what you said, it could benefit from some improvements in those areas
+Camkitsune the walljump isn't random, it's a mechanic that works like in Super Metroid, when you are rolling in the air, go to the wall then quickly in the other direction and jump, you can' even see it in the frames.
Why wouldn't the collision box be the whole character? you're not huge and it isn't a bullet hell. Just work around it, it isn't that hard.

Three things:
1) The thing about the wall-jump is that it's layed out in such a way that it is overly easy to activate it without meaning to in high-pressure situations.
2) The collision box is slightly _wider_ than the whole character. The hitbox for bullets is somewhere between half and 2/3rds the size of the character collision box. This leads to instances where you lose your combo because you weren't able to pass through a 1-block-wide hole in the floor while your bullets shot right through said hole. There are also a lot of instances of very sketchy collision detection when jumping on enemies because of this.
3) If you have to work _around_ something, it's generally a sign that the game is flawed. Which was my original point.

To me it was never an annoyance to do any of that stuff and even knowing to wall jump I could take advantage of it.
this game was fantastic. the cat really got me too. but the thing is, the mobile version's button placement is kinda bit bad - on the downside of my smartphone screen. I guess they couldn't get any solution about that.
by the way, the Noppy gun is really good! shoots where you want, and higher fire power than the Machine gun.

Favorite theme by far in Downwell is defiantly the Aquifer theme. As for the game, I love playing it, but hate it.

Only just got it. It's better in short burts of of play. One of the few games so far I've played where levels made at random (probably) fits. And theirs -DeadTurd- deadcells. I don't get get it's appeal.
