I just finished listening to this podcast and also had two emotional moments. As Alumni Reps, we sometimes face a lot of negativity in PMs and most of the time are avoided as everyone thinks we are reaching out to raise money for scholarships and we end up questioning why we are donating our time to this cause but this interview lifted my spirits to keep going. While all the senior batches and us who are involved with the alumni association know the majority of what Dr Aftab said but for recent graduates, this interview is a must-watch. It talks about FAST's History, Campus History, Decision Making on where to build the new campus and how FAST board members are selected. Most people don't know this but I was forced by my father to join FAST as he wanted me to stay in Lahore for my undergrad. While I had bitter-sweet memories with the university itself, it gave me great friends and a network. Many times I am questioned why I keep on promoting the FAST brand everywhere shamelessly but the reality of the life is you can't remove your alma mater from your profile unless you change your identity. GO FAST! Proud of being a FASTian.
@@sambillings7153 It's dependent on your financial situation. There's a Financial Aid Committee at every campus which decides the amount of financial aid to be given as per the individual's family and financial condition. As Rector mentioned, last year they gave 224 Million in financial aid.
When we got into FAST back in 1991, we were told that we are only paying 15% of the fees, and 85% is funded by the foundation. God bless Aga Hasan Abdi saheb and his family, who was the main benefactor behind the foundation (FAST = FOUNDATION FOR ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY). Those who know more or have more accurate information, please keep me honest.

I was the part of outreach scholarship program in 2007 from fast University Karachi. I am actually belong from interior Sindh. I am totally agree with doctor sb it was dream for remote people to admit in fast University but due to his vision me alone with 300 more students are now graduated from fast and performing well in IT industry all over the world. I got 62+ currently doing my masters from Washington state University in cse major in machine learning and neural networks. To finance a loan for an iitian would be a walk in the park even for 1cr+ but field should be stem, else you won't get 3 year visa and chances of converting it to H1B is slim.

I completed my BS last year from FAST Isb and now working in a good tech company Alhamdulillah and that is all because of FAST. So keep calm and trust FAST.

In india , huge pool of IT professional which are in millions are not all trained in Engineering colleges, though they study in engineering college but they later get trained in small institutes which are numbered in hundred of thousands in all big cities, they conduct short term courses of 3 months to 6 months with very nominal fees. these courses are specialized in particular software . many institutes used pirated software for training and all big companies ignore it knowing dat this pool will benefit them for their future business.
how u people are wondering......that one of highest package was 1.5 lakh pkr pm which is 18lpa...equal to 6.7 lpa here.....😂😂😂😂......iits me to lowest package b ise jada hota h😂😂😂....that too cse .....in iit cse ka avg package 38lpa inr hota h which is 1 crore + pkr.....
Mainly due to the political situation, the giants of the IT industry don't operate in Pakistan. Whereas, all top MNCs are in India where IITians gain advantage
And it's true that the earnings are quite low here in the Pakistani IT sector as compared to India but there are software developers that are paid below avg. in India as well

Very nice vlog again. I love the fact that youbvrought up IIT. It is great that we can compare and look to universities like Howard but much better to compare with another top university with our region. The way generally IIT works basically is such that even though their university program is 4years but when a student comes in, the start with a 10 year roadmap. They also have a very high entrance criteria. We can't have that at this point in Pakistan given our social/ cultural dianamics. Hence we can keep the current criteria fo4 entrance. Then we can have a mid semester counseling every semester including at the entrance. In IIT they have realized that if u enter thinking you want to become an electrical engineer, it is very possibl3 you don't want to do that 1 year into your education. Hence on their mid semester or each quarter counseling meeting with each student, they go over his trajectory and have the capacity right then and there to change that if the student doesn't wanna do what he came in with. We can adopt that and by doing this we combine the great education with personal passion and the end result is spectacular. 2. The student has to be submerged the entire 4 -6 years in their field- so in the first year they have to volunteer within the community within their degree program so if they are going for agricultural engineering, their volunteer work can be at a farm for instance. The 2nd year, they have to volunteer again similarly but in a more technical aspect. In the 3rd year 1st semester they have to do volunteer shadowing within their graduate degree field and come up with a solution to a problem arising from that work. They can try to implement it in that company if allowed or have a written very detailed report that gets turned upon return to the university. They definately should have a great job opportunity within or without Pakistan in any top 100 companies of the world. It also becomes on the student to achieve this ind3p3ndently. In today's online work atmosphere, perhaps if their hurdle is not getting a visa for a certain company, they need to create a need for them within that company even if it is a growth opportunity for that company in Pakistan as a very viable lucrative option for that company thereby creating a position for themselves for that company within Pakistan. All there off campus in between semester works should qualify for some kind of credit towards the degree. Please make sure to pass this on to the FAST university representative on your progr today. Would love to have our own IIT comparable university in Pakistan. Thanks

I enjoyed listening this episode like all of your previous ones. I appreciate Dr. Aftab for sharing his wisdom with us. Having said that, I want to say that Dr. Aftab could not give answer to the question: why students now are not able to reach Silicon Valley as previous students used to. I am also an IT graduate, from session 12-16, and it was my dream to go Silicon valley. During my undergrad studies, I was awarded a scholarship to study 1 semester from USA under Global Ugrad Scholarship(funded by State Department). After studying in America for 1 semester and after visiting silicon valley during my stay there, it became my dream to come back to US and work in silicon valley..... I came back to Pak (after the end of scholarship) and graduated from my uni, and then unfortunately there was no opportunity at all even in my own country- leave the sillicon valley aside. I tried everything that I could try but nothing could take me there. Maybe that was God's decision or maybe it is fate of our country's graduates...I saw my dream of silicon valley dying. I cannot explain how painful it was and how painful it is even now to forget that.... I will never forgive those people who are responsible for this damage..I just feel really sorry to all the graduates who despite their will to do, get no opportunity. And I also feel sorry for my beloved Pakistan...Who is responsible for our ruined future..Who? Who we should blame? Ourselves? But for what? For putting all of our energy and all of our parent's resources to make our career through universities? I know I am sounding cynical and it looks like a blame game where I am the losser. But just think clearly, who is responsible for what happened to us? We are not insects, we are human beings. Who will think to solve this problem? If universities won't solve this problem then why they are taking so much fee on the name of professional education? Let me say this what you already know: Universities are only doing business and they are doing great at it. That's it... Their work from decades is really commendable. Yes, it is commendable because they created their legacy; legacy of an excellent educational business on the expense of our parent's hard earned money.....Excellent business model with excellent revenue generation methods... A big round of applause from us - all the victims of this pathetic education system. At the end, I would say: dear teachers please don't mind, this is not about you. It's not your fault. I respect you all because of your status. And secondly, because you also suffered from this education system, like us, afterall you were also products of the universities. Free Tip for the creators of the 'Education Business Model': Flaw is in your business model because it is not providing value; it is not producing valuable products. Remember that if a business fails to provide value to it's customers (apprently students) then that business perishes at the end of the day. So, save your legacy if you can.

Bhai gone are those days when IITians had just one objective that is to move to US.Today only 15 percent of IITians go abroad after graduation and many who go come Back as entrepreneurs.
Going abroad isn't affordable for everyone.

@@zainzia5708 you will get 70-75 lakhs inr loan from US based finance companies. I got 62+ currently doing my masters from Washington state University in cse major in machine learning and neural networks. To finance a loan for an iitian would be a walk in the park even for 1cr+ but field should be stem, else you won't get 3 year visa and chances of converting it to H1B is slim.

Spoken like a true academician. (Claps). It has actually cleared some myths for me apart from other lessons. My university was near Fast Campus, Islamabad and I thought that these students belongs to an elite class. Moreover, never imagined that perspective of semester/annual fees.

You see the current digitalisation happening in India by the ruling govt. & also their efforts in the startup sector is one of the factors motivating the Indian youth in a way to start on their own..... well you can't ignore the job part where fresh graduates from IIT'S or NIT'S tend to land a job in big PBC's coz as sir Aftab mentioned their must be motivating factor among the students which pushes them to excel in their respective fields ... hence first motive is to gain FINANCIAL STABILITY and then if interested .......idea of a startup comes in

FAST has the best teaching faculty and that creates the difference. Also, I believe that you should know some of the basic working of old computers too because it surely become useful some way or the other.
I completed my BS last year from FAST Isb and now working in a good tech company Alhamdulillah and that is all because of FAST. So keep calm and trust FAST.

Actually i am going to take fast test tommorrow on 19th july '24. This podcast really cleared my any doubts on applying fast
In india , huge pool of IT professional which are in millions are not all trained in Engineering colleges, though they study in engineering college but they later get trained in small institutes which are numbered in hundred of thousands in all big cities, they conduct short term courses of 3 months to 6 months with very nominal fees. these courses are specialized in particular software . many institutes used pirated software for training and all big companies ignore it knowing dat this pool will benefit them for their future business.
Loved his stories of success. Used to listen him during lectures at FAST. Thanks for inviting him.

Mainly due to the political situation, the giants of the IT industry don't operate in Pakistan. Whereas, all top MNCs are in India where IITians gain advantage
And it's true that the earnings are quite low here in the Pakistani IT sector as compared to India but there are software developers that are paid below avg. in India as well

I love the fact that youbvrought up IIT. It is great that we can compare and look to universities like Howard but much better to compare with another top university with our region. The way generally IIT works basically is such that even though their university program is 4years but when a student comes in, the start with a 10 year roadmap. They also have a very high entrance criteria. We can't have that at this point in Pakistan given our social/ cultural dianamics. Hence we can keep the current criteria fo4 entrance. Then we can have a mid semester counseling every semester including at the entrance. In IIT they have realized that if u enter thinking you want to become an electrical engineer, it is very possibl3 you don't want to do that 1 year into your education. Hence on their mid semester or each quarter counseling meeting with each student, they go over his trajectory and have the capacity right then and there to change that if the student doesn't wanna do what he came in with. We can adopt that and by doing this we combine the great education with personal passion and the end result is spectacular. 2. The student has to be submerged the entire 4 -6 years in their field- so in the first year they have to volunteer within the community within their degree program so if they are going for agricultural engineering, their volunteer work can be at a farm for instance. The 2nd year, they have to volunteer again similarly but in a more technical aspect. In the 3rd year 1st semester they have to do volunteer shadowing within their graduate degree field and come up with a solution to a problem arising from that work. They can try to implement it in that company if allowed or have a written very detailed report that gets turned upon return to the university. They definately should have a great job opportunity within or without Pakistan in any top 100 companies of the world. It also becomes on the student to achieve this ind3p3ndently. In today's online work atmosphere, perhaps if their hurdle is not getting a visa for a certain company, they need to create a need for them within that company even if it is a growth opportunity for that company in Pakistan as a very viable lucrative option for that company thereby creating a position for themselves for that company within Pakistan. All there off campus in between semester works should qualify for some kind of credit towards the degree.

I enjoyed listening this episode like all of your previous ones. I appreciate Dr. Aftab for sharing his wisdom with us. Having said that, I want to say that Dr. Aftab could not give answer to the question: why students now are not able to reach Silicon Valley as previous students used to.
I am also an IT graduate, from session 12-16, and it was my dream to go Silicon valley. During my undergrad studies, I was awarded a scholarship to study 1 semester from USA under Global Ugrad Scholarship(funded by State Department). After studying in America for 1 semester and after visiting silicon valley during my stay there, it became my dream to come back to US and work in silicon valley..... I came back to Pak (after the end of scholarship) and graduated from my uni, and then unfortunately there was no opportunity at all even in my own country- leave the sillicon valley aside. I tried everything that I could try but nothing could take me there. Maybe that was God's decision or maybe it is fate of our country's graduates...I saw my dream of silicon valley dying. I cannot explain how painful it was and how painful it is even now to forget that....
I will never forgive those people who are responsible for this damage..I just feel really sorry to all the graduates who despite their will to do, get no opportunity. And I also feel sorry for my beloved Pakistan...Who is responsible for our ruined future..Who? Who we should blame? Ourselves? But for what? For putting all of our energy and all of our parent's resources to make our career through universities?
I know I am sounding cynical and it looks like a blame game where I am the losser. But just think clearly, who is responsible for what happened to us?
We are not insects, we are human beings. Who will think to solve this problem? If universities won't solve this problem then why they are taking so much fee on the name of professional education?
Let me say this what you already know: Universities are only doing business and they are doing great at it. That's it... Their work from decades is really commendable. Yes, it is commendable because they created their legacy; legacy of an excellent educational business on the expense of our parent's hard earned money.....Excellent business model with excellent revenue generation methods... A big round of applause from us - all the victims of this pathetic education system.
At the end, I would say: dear teachers please don't mind, this is not about you. It's not your fault. I respect you all because of your status. And secondly, because you also suffered from this education system, like us, afterall you were also products of the universities.
Free Tip for the creators of the 'Education Business Model': Flaw is in your business model because it is not providing value; it is not producing valuable products. Remember that if a business fails to provide value to it's customers (apprently students) then that business perishes at the end of the day. So, save your legacy if you can.
