đ€ Why Albon's staying with a POINT-LESS F1 team
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 14. 05. 2024
- Alex Albon has recommitted an F1 team that hasn't scored a point this year. Here's why...

He made wise decision ...... The offers didn't seem like a guarantee from the big 5 and other teams don't look like having good leadership like in Alpine and haas
He is still affected by what happened to him in 2020 when Red Bull dropped him. The chances of returning to F1 after a 1 year gap are pretty rare. He was lucky to get the opportunity with Williams. Seat security is his number one priority rn, not necessarily performance.
Nah, he couldâve signed for Merc but stayed with Williams
â@@Tzomthekliafafanboyis there actual proof that Mercedes even offered him a contract?
@MatthiasDeScheerder He was heavily linked to Mercedes.
@@Tzomthekliafafanboy this is F1 and its usual silly season. "Being linked to" means absolutely nothing other than that, usually, "some" at one point have uttered some option for a driver at a team and the media start running with it.
To my knowledge nobody at Mercedes has confirmed anything and it would surprise me if there was an actual offer. Because I am 100% sure he'd have taken it.
@MatthiasDeScheerder yes, but why would he extend with Williams if he is one of the options for Mercedes? If you think about it, Sainz, Albon and Bottas are the only good options for Mercedes, and i think Albon was the most realistic one. He basically decided that he should stay at a backmarker team for multiple years instead of looking at options before extending
Given I feel like, of the grid, Albonâs personality is most like mine, I think thereâs a simple answer: job security.
Continue to live a jet-set lifestyle, continue to travel the world doing one of the most amazing things on the planet, continue to earn good money, continue to be known all around the world⊠and continue to have options down the line. This just makes sense.
And if it works out - you get to be THE GUY who rebuilt one of the most legendary F1 teams ever. đ
Newer fans might not realise this, but before Michael Schumacher, the two biggest names in F1 were McLaren and Williams. Ferrari was always âthereâ but you didnât go to Ferrari if you wanted to be world champion.
You're GODDAMN RIGHT. Yes, its job security over a promotion!
I feel like its job security, vote of confidence in williams and a free ticket into the next couple of years in F1. If williams doesnât work out and albon does put in the world he has a lot of options and he can wait out the upcoming regulation changes.
Edit: and like nikelaos said if it does work out with williams he is the one bringing the team back.
â@Nikelaos_Khristianos hell schumi rebuilt ferrari and it took him 5 years right?
Too afraid of getting out of comfort zone
Wild idea: Maybe Albon is confident in the project since he knows more on the inside than we do? The dude was at Red Bull as well, so he knows the bench mark.
Everyone was shocked by Hamilton's move to Mercedes in 2013 because in 2012 Mercedes was mid team but Hamilton made this move because he had information
Where the hell did all these thirst trap bots come from?
I have no idea.
I sense they are being tolerated , for comment engagement boosts
Just report them
I also want to know what their end game is. If itâs to scam, what are they doing and how are they making money?
Stopping bots is more effective in waves. But lately they seem to be using AI generated messages to seep in through the filters.
I hope this pays off for him and Williams
He already has 2 points, and 10th in qualifying coming in to the Canadian Grand Prix, are linked to signing CARLOS SAINZ, and are above Kick Sauber and Alpine. Itâs going well.
@EpicUniqueWill9 Yeah it's been encouraging so far. I'm looking forward to see how their development goes this year
Sometimes having stability and security in a team is much better than driving for a cut throat team.
It's the smart choice because Williams would be less likely to accommodate Alex if he held out for another offer that didn't materialize !
They need to get stroll out of that damn seat dude. Ughhhhh
Objectively, the guy's mid but still doing better than several drivers including Albon. He's likely to be around for a while.
Alonso scored 8 podiums in 2023 while all Stroll did was spin, crash, and disappoint. Had Albon been in that 2nd seat and he would have also scored podiums last year. Stroll Out.
@@jululAlbon only got 2 podiums in 2020 in the clear second best car. And in both races Max DNFd in front of him.
Strolls 2023 is not that dissimilar to Albons 2020.
â@@paperplane-db8qf come on 2020 was 4 years ago. Albon was a rookie and cars were different
â@dimonfox21 albons rookie year was 2019. Granted he shouldn't have even been in the red bull seat in 2019, they should've given it to kvyat who was performing better, it was an odd off-season
Plot twist: Alex knows that Newey is coming
Thatâs my thoughts exactly. Itâs where Newey started and itâs where he could make the most difference. Itâs the challenge he wants not the money and Williams is where itâs at.
@@Adequate79 And with Sir Frank and Patrick Head-the two people who broke faith with Newey-gone, that's possible. But realistically? He's always wanted to work with Hamilton, and Ferrari, and Ferrari has leadership that would give him carte blanche
I think he's just happy there and doesnt want to risk his seat by going to another team where he could be easily replaced. I think some people dont take into account that job environment plays a big part. If you're happy working with people there, you will hesitate about changing environment even if the job is hard because you enjoy being there.
Tbh people forgot that athlete is a job
Williams is not a "pointless F1 team". That's a dirty slur.
Presumably they just mean it has no points yet this year, but agreed, bit of a harsh way of saying it!
He meant they had no points.
Poor choice of word, he didnt mean useless
they literally are pointless tho. like by definition of the word they are literally pointless.
they hyphenated the word for people like you and yet you still took the bait, eh?
If Williams makes a big turn around in the next year or so Albon will look like a fucking genius
We gotta wait till 26. Vowles has been very clear that thatâs the goal for the team. If they want to make the leap forwards that they need, then they need to nail 26.
đweâve been waiting for this turn around since the 2000âs
And truly since the 90âs
Itâs not happening with this team
Iâm not saying I donât want it to happen because it would be awesome to see Williams back up the grid again but letâs be honest with ourselves, it ainât happening
he got a secret forecast that Newey comingđ
Would be good to see Williams back at the front!
He is my favourite driver and he deserves better. But the other offers were not guaranteed. He is better off working hard for the long term. Just want him on the grid
As romantic a notion as this may be, I wonder if Albon envisions himself spearheading a definitive Williams comeback like Michael Schumacher did with Ferrari 25/30 years ago?
That would be cool, but there is no way in hell Williams will be racing at the top before Mercedes. He shouldâve signed a deal with Mercedes
@@Tzomthekliafafanboy I dunno, Williams have bounced back before. They were arguably in an even worse position in the past, but then a couple key ingredients came their way: Massa and Bottas, the Merc engines, the Martini sponsorship - Williams looked serious again. If they keep trekking how they are then they could definitely emulate McLaren at least.
@Nikelaos_Khristianos From 2000 to 2024, Williams were never really a race winning car. In 2014 and 2022 they did well after a regulation change and then they fell off.
â@@Tzomthekliafafanboy I don't think that 2022 Williams season was as good as 2014
@dimonfox21 I never said that, but what i can say is that after both 2014 and 2022 they fell off
I've never felt Albon had the killer in him. Playing safe here.
I like what there doing over there. They have a killer Team Principle as well ..
Announced the day after it was said Newey was meeting with William....
These bots are wild
Go on albon am thai and willing to cheer for fellow people
Williams has a legacy and will climb its way back to competitiveness. And he is a convincing No.1 driver for them. He's one of the fast ones from the brat pack.
I respect his dedication.
Maybe itâs a mix of not a guaranteed good deal form the others and or trauma from RB. Staying with what you know
One answer. Less pressure
Albon pretty much has a guaranteed seat at Williams as long as he wants it if he keeps performing like he does. Maybe not ever winning a race but still.
Why are you all sucking up to Vowles - strong leadership? He's a first time TP, I would argue that makes the leadership weaker than many other teams...
Albon can do well and signing this contract cements the potential he has as a driver and the potential Williams has to become a top team again
It's a pipe dream to say the least
â@@blitzcon9088 i don't think that in 2013 someone thought that in 2014 Williams would become top team
In James Vowles we trust
Why? What exactly can you point to that objectively proves his âstrong leadershipâ? Itâs a thing they just say, like âthe team is behind himâ or â weâre primed for successâ or 4 in 5 dentists recommend Colgate.
You should see that the entire grid is being produced like a movie or game. A story for every fan type. Williams has a role and I donât think itâs a coincidence that they chose a team with winning history but no recent success. Liberty has pulled strings to prevent Williams from catching up. It doesnât fit the marketing strategy.
So when you say in Vowles we trust⊠Why?
@@f.kieranfinney457 Bro chill it's not that deep
Maybe Vowles has managed to sign Newey
@simon9548 Why on earth would Newey go to Williams, doesnt make sence
@@aleksavijatovic8834why not he was there before
@@aleksavijatovic8834 Because he only left Williams in the 90s because Patrick and Frank wouldnât give him a stake in the team. Now, with Neweyâs credentials, he could very easily ask for and be granted a piece of ownership of Williams - the thing that he wanted back in 97. And with that, he could become even more legendary as a designer by being the guy who helped engineer Williams back to the front - alongside Vowles. Itâs very romantic, yes, but in many ways it makes more sense than Aston Martin or McLaren.
Hereâs why itâs less practical though. If a team signed Newey, they would need the money and the facilities to support his work, otherwise heâd be working below his potential. In that scenario, it would depend on whether he saw that as a viable challenge or not.
@@Nikelaos_Khristianos Ferrari is the most logical choice
honestly thought it was the other way around
They didn't buy Williams to sit out back, it's just that the company was so behind in investment and tech it's taken time to build it back up. I think they'll move back up the grid soon and albons made a good choice staying there. It's a good atmosphere for him and he's helped get them points
slow news week, race weekend can't come soon enough
I bet James Vowels is very convincing. He's got that velvety smooth voice that brings calm to anyone. I bet he can sell melting ice cream to a woman in velvet gloves.
Vowles is set to go down as the least effective TP since Otmar. Iâm not buying his BS about their systems weaknesses. None of those guys tell the truth.
@@f.kieranfinney457 But he's still got a velvety smooth voice. So you'll believe what he tells you and you'll like it.
Plz tell me sgt is going. Sheeeesh he's had a trouble start.
Tangentially, thank you for "invites that very question" instead of the all-too-common (and incorrect here) "begs the question."
I think it's the right call.
Unfortunately, loyalty to business is becoming a thing of the past. It's directly proportional to their loyalty to their employees. If you find a great team, you stick with it. In good times and in bad. Good for this guy.
Yeah, but he'll stay in Williams not winning anything for more and more years. Tbh, I don't even know how this team still didn't go bankrupt and left F1.
Williams era is over for over 20 years now
Newey đ€đ
He already failed in a big team. He's similar to a Magnusson or Hulkenberg . Drive around each week and pick up a nice pay day.
That doesnât really track when Hulkâs rolled the dice on Audi. đ§ Heâs going to a less competitive team for a shot with a major manufacturer. It would be one hell of a crazy day in 2026 if the front row at round 1 was Williams and Audi. đ€·ââïž
Itâs exactly the same. Results donât matter as much as paycheck for most drivers. Unlike Albon, I think Hulk would relish a shot at RedBull or Mercedes, even taking a cut. But notwithstanding he took the pay.
â@@f.kieranfinney457You obviously know nothing at all about why race drivers drive race cars!! If you think it is all about a "paycheck," why do you watch or comment??
Would be nice to see Team Willy do better, let's hope Albon's loyalty is rewarded
Let's hope Williams are equally loyal if their plan works out
Itâs because he buckles under the pressure when thereâs high expectations. He canât handle the stress.
Adrian! đ„
His decision is team at bottom to team midway he's done that he is thinking when Williams are back fighting for points he will be the man that does this
Sign me up for team Williams as well at least until Andretti joins the grid.
Yeah, he took the safe option, to have a guaranteed seat for few seasons and after that maybe a bigger opportunity to come.
Because he can be a number one driver with no real expectations đđđ
Lol he didnât get any offer from the big teams
Why doesnt BMW get into F1?
They did actually acquire Sauber at one point between 2006-2008, and actually had a pretty interesting few seasons, having Vettel, Kubica, and Henfield, just to name a few. They withdrew in 2009 citing a desire to focus on other motorsports. Before that, also had a temporary stint as a engine supplier for Williams.
At Williams, Alex Albon is the clear lead driver!! Add to this the presence of James Vowles who is ready to repeat the success he had at Mercedes with the Williams camp.
I would say that being a Williams number 1 driver is ok for Albon. There is no room at Ferrari, McLaren, Aston and probably no room either at Red Bull and Audi. Mercedes will choose either Sainz or someone who will be expected to be replaced by Antonelli in some years time.
Smart move. They know he is good and he knows that there is no long term future in the other teams, especially Red Bull since he already experienced the toxic behavior towards the 2nd driver. If i where in his shoes, the decision would be the same
Does he actually have any other options though đ€
This was a great decision.
Because Albon is a Williams tier driver.
Albonâs done well this year and is showing the other teams what heâs capable of. His time will come.
It is called job security
Let albon cook
I think that Williams just have bad season start. Remember 2021. They can improve during season
He saw what Norris did at McLaren and just wanted the same.
I have followed this sport for 30 years, any team on the grid has the opportunity to turn it round during a rules change. Not only that but Williams are already all in on the 2026 rules....
I dont see an issue in gambling on the long term with a team like Williams, they finally have some cash and drive
Logan it's James, Let Alex pass
Why would any top team take Albon though? He had his chance and showed he couldnât hack it, heâs very lucky to be on the grid in all honesty.
I would have stayed in the team Williams over Ferrari Red Bull and Mercedes any day of the week
I still think he's replacing Lewis at Mercedes next year
dont ever see existing top people going there only new rising people that want a foot in the door, the brand does not have any soul.. like who the f are williams? we know their history but who are they now?
Albon will forever be accused of playing it safe, being afraid of competing at the top. Heâs made a sound financial choice. Seems like enough.
Better in a pointless F1 team than in no F1 team at all.
Because Williams is going for Honda Engines in 2026.
Mercedes would've been a good choice, but i don't think they offered him anything.
I agree that his best interest lies in the long term game. Letâs remember he is helping build Williams up and bring them back towards the front runners, all while developing his impressive driver profile so that he can be a better investment for other teams later on in his career.
I think he is choosing team more for his mental health instead of being on top and i appreciate him for it. I wish William get back on top some day.
No longer point-less now
Dont worry guys, williams is about to lock in
Calling Williams a pointless team itâs crazy and a insult to sir Frank Williams
I think they mean they haven't scored points this year
If weâre calling on the afterlife why not just ask Senna and Mansell to rise up too. Williams would still be on the bottom. I think F1 likes it that way. The plucky sad sack always appeals to some.
How many points do they have? Itâs a pun
Maybe Albon knows NEWEY is coming over ???!!
He will drive for Mercedes in the future!
Come back in a few years to see if this is either smart or a terrible career decision.
Albonâs sticking with Williams because thatâs the only sustainable seat he will ever have in the sport.
đ
Albon is barely good enough to drive for Williams let alone any team mentioned. He had his chance in a Red Bull and they quickly saw he wasnât up to the task.
Some media is unbelievable, a couple of regular races and albon is championship's material, what a joke.
A pointless f1 team? You mean the oldest team in F1? Where tf do they get you ppl from i swear... Its like you build your life off just talking without knowledge
One of oldest team, not the oldest team in F1!
Is he good enough for a seat at the top 5?
I just want to see Albon and Williams beat RedBull in a race. That's it.
I thought Sainz & Albon were the duo for Aston Martin.
Ocon is an underrated driver! He's likely not a great, but he's better than teams give him credit for!
Easy money.
What the hell are these bots
THEY RACE ME SO HARD! one of the slowest on the grid.
Albon is way overhyped
He isn't very good so he really didn't have any options. Hell, i can beat Sargeant and i'm 57 years old.
