When I was doing my English 101 finals at CUNY, the professor told the two West Indian students to leave when it came to punctuation and grammar. Myself, I'm Jamaican and another girl from Dominca. He told us he didn't need to grade us based on the papers we turned in over the course. He said he was busy grading papers and didn't need to spend time grading us so we were free to go study for other classes.

Ja Kanu, I am from Jamaica and had a similar experience at my university in New York. I was asked by the professor “did you take the English placement exam”? I told him I was not asked to do so. He took me to the English department, gave me a 500 words descriptive essay to write. When he read it he went to every professor in the department to share my essay. All future classes a paragraph of my essays were distributed and discussed. In the Caribbean, we look, not only on content, but punctuation. Without the proper punctuation, neither poetry, essays nor a book will be meaningful.

When our government decides to stop cutting the educational budget and the parents of children who are from lower economic strata, begin to see education as a valuable resource for their child/children to have, especially in our inner cities, then Jamaica will be right up there with Cuba.
Fun fact: Singapore's educational system was so bad, it was almost nonexistent, but they came to Jamaica, studied our system, went back home and adopted perfectly. Now they are right up at the very top with the best. If you ever happen to see a note book from Singapore that the students use, you'd think it was written in Jamaica.

I realize a tremendous focus was put on Universities in this piece, but the educational success of the Caribbean countries is rooted in its primary and secondary educational system (i.e equivalent of K - 12th Grade in the U.S.).
It's important to draw that distinction, since post-secondary education is a tremendous challenge for the islands, considering there are so many bright and eager minds, but limited opportunities for training and employment.

@@blackcaesar416 That is not true because the word “scunt” has only recently become popularized by some of us, idiotic Guyanese. Barbadian and other Caribbean people have their own curse words that they used, daily. We, Guyanese, are welcoming people to all foreigners and we never treated any foreigners bad at our airports or or those trying to enter our country because we are accepting to a fault. We are, also, are far from perfect. Our country at one time was the food basket of the whole Caribbean. Now, that Guyana has found oil and is about to become a rich country, we Guyanese, would not have to suffer the treatment or any injustice that were dealt out to us at various airports throughout the Caribbean. Our government will bring my our own airline “ Guyana Airlines” so we travel back and forth to Guyana, non stop.

As people of the Caribbean diaspora, we should all be proud.Think about it , nationwide the US has an adult literacy rate of 79% in 2022. Why then do many of us are so quick to embrace systems that are not as proficient as ours? Third world nations as many of them are wrongly labeled are ahead of developed nations in many ways, this is why they will always drain our Human Resources.” The US is wealth driven therefore investment in the building blocks of society is not a priority. Free college is important, however we must build jobs in our diaspora so the brain drain to developed nations do not continue, not just jobs but good paying jobs. Barbados stands out for it’s salaries. I was shocked years ago during the minimum wage debate to find out Barbados minimum wage was almost equal to that of the rich US; what a shame.
