Give for the furtherance of the Kingdom of God. Give because Jesus gave His all.
Give because we are stewards of all God has graciously given us. But I always ask God, "Shall I give here Lord?" He will tell you where to give.
I love how the Amplified version puts it.. this man was commended for his preparation.. he knew he was wrong and knew there would be consequences.. so he in advance made preparations.
In a way, like the Shrewd servant.. let's do something about the impeding doom that shall befall the earth.. that is honour God with our decisions now, so that when we are no more, like the shrewd servant being welcomed by his master's debtors we will also be welcomed into God's eternal Kingdom 🙏
After this, I watched "Does Jesus Commend Dishonesty in Luke 16?" by Desiring God, and it cemented my understanding. I can't believe I've been so blind to it until now! What a work in progress I am - so slow to do the right thing. 😢
Amen. I decided to listen to several perspectives on this Parable after having my my mind discombobulated by it for the umpteenth time, and refusing to just just skim past it this time. It's not the chimera that I had let it become after all. The Word always makes perfect sense and is usually not complicated to understand or explain.

Thanks! To answer my question, I guess a good steward wouldn't serve a lord that would require usury. He is not good, and unjust, but can only be a good steward if he serves a good master. Serving Jesus Christ.
Replying to the very many comments I see on the topic of tithing, this is why we do it. In the book of Hebrews chapter 7, the bible talks of Abraham and Melchizedek. Now we know that Abraham was not under the law-- the law hadn't even been given then. The bible tells us of how Abraham gave a tenth of his plunder to Melchizedek. After the law came, the priesthood was appointed to Levi and his descendants who the people of the OT gave their tithes too-- that is the Old covenant tithing people refer to. However, we know that Jesus is not a priest according to the order of Levi but according to the order of Melchizedek, the King of peace who reigns forever. This king, unlike Levi, did not die. The Old covenant is the lesser and now a greater covenant has come, if the first tithe was given to Melchizedek who cannot die and Jesus is a priest in the order of Melchizedek, it means his rule will never pass away.The Old covenant is passed so we don't submit tithes to the priests in the order of Levi but to the High priest, Jesus who is in the order of Melchizedek. We pay our tithes under a new covenant. Amazing is the fact that the bible says that even Levi technically paid tithe to Melchizedek (through whose order we have a new covenant).

I see a lot of you condemning tithing because Jesus didn't emphasize on it in the NT, that's just absurd because HE said I didn't come to abolish the law but modify it. Jesus was never seen honoring his parents in the NT but do we throw that commandment away because its from the OT? We are wise by His spirit and we should discern spiritual laws from worldly doctrines and as the message version of LUKE 16 clearly states, we should use our common sense most times.
Tithing is a relic of the Mosaic laws. It was never in money but in food crops.
Let everyone begin to give what they can afford and by any form of compulsion or manipulation which is what has happened and is still happening in many of our churches!

He didn't come to modify the law, but to fulfill the law, in other words to complete all the righteousness the Old Testament foretold and to complete all the righteousness the Old Testament required. He is the only one that can do that, He is perfect.
Universally accepted as the most difficult parable of Jesus but it’s really simple and straightforward. It’s all about being honest and trustworthy as seen on the last part of the parable. Why then Jesus say to follow the shrewd manager as an example, it’s an irony if you want to end up together with the “sons of this age” in eternity then do so. But Eternal habitation refers here is not Heaven but Hell.
Nah bro. It's about not making people do the feasts outside of Jerusalem like the Masianics do. The unjust Steward realized he was scattering the sheep by casting stumbling blocks and then only teaches the 10 commandments.
This is the second time I heard the late RC Sproul teach and endorse Tithing for the NT believers and quote Malachi which in context is for the Jews being part of the Law and I must say I am disappointed he digressed from the correct teaching about giving which Apostle taught clearly on 2 Cor. 9:6-7. It came to me as a shock that Malachi 3 and 2 Cor 9;6-7 were taught simultaneously bec they obviously are at variance to each other - Tithing is compulsory while Paul taught not to give under compulsion. Jesus was rebuking the Pharisees who are under the Law when he mentioned tithing, it was not an endorsement for NT believers. RC Sproul was no perfect teacher as I thought he was.🤔
Many people get confused about what Jesus did on the cross regarding the Law. Jesus did not redeem us from the Law, but as it is written, "He redeemed us from the curse of the Law having become a curse for us.' Jesus also said, "For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, nor the least stroke of a pen, will by no means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. To us, the main law that has been accomplished is the blood sacrifice law which Jesus fulfilled.The oral laws such as the actions of Cain, and of Abram to Mechizedek, were well known, but God gave them to Moses to give to the people as written instructions due to people's, [and that includes us] rebellion and resistance to our sustainer's laws of love. But the stingy givers add to this by arguing against being a cheerful giver from a loving heart; and yet grace still abounds. Imagine if their boss paid them like they pay the Lord: they would cry, 'Foul foul'.
First of all, there are no perfect teachers outside of Jesus Christ. But secondly, to say that two scriptures are at variance with one another is, I believe, a misunderstanding of what Scripture is. Our Bible has one Author: God. And God does not disagree with Himself or change. When He spoke through Malachi to let the people know they were robbing Him by holding back their finances (tithes and offerings, not just tithes), that wasn’t just a teaching for them at that time. It applies to us as well. And that’s what RC was teaching here too. If we aren’t willing to serve God with every aspect of our lives, we’re robbing Him. He’s worthy of our money, our time, our worship, and our praise.
Also, I see a lot of people saying that tithing was done away with in the New Testament, but I would ask for a chapter and verse for that.

I otherwise love RC Sproul, but I don’t follow; is he saying Christians are required to tithe or not?? Because he’s kind of said both things in this message.
He is saying that the more you Love & Trust God, the less it bothers you to give. He is just using the word "tithe", here anyway, as a tenth, or a minimum standard, cuz he said about all of your giving to various things (church, people,tithes, offerings) etc adding up to 10% or more.
The more we trust & rely on God's providence, the more we give😉

The key in understanding this parable is the correct meaning of “Eternal Habitation” most if not all thinks this is Heaven but try to put Hell instead and it all makes sense because everyone in the parable are Unjust. It’s a warning not an endorsement.

This parable is confusing when you take it by itself. Jesus did not start speaking at the beginning of ch 16, it started at the beginning of ch15 and the stage was set in 15:1-2, followed by 3 parables about "just stewards" (Jesus) caring for the lost...THEN is contrasts to the Pharisees who were supposed to be caring for Israel but were now losing that role. The natural reaction should have been analogous to what the steward did - find a way to be a blessing to the people as a last ditch effort to gain favor in enternity...but the Pharisees thought Jesus was talking about money...

@@caleb3960 My experience with "pastors" (50 years and in para church ministry and professional representation) is that they focus on $'s in Malachi to the exclusion of divorce. You ask him why he does not condemn divorce in his "sermons." Two things pastors refuse is divorce and gambling. That is the truth.
John MacArthur, God's Plan for Giving (tape series) 2001:
Two kinds of giving are taught consistently throughout Scripture: giving to the government (always compulsory) and giving to God (always voluntary). The issue has been greatly confused, however, by some who misunderstand the nature of the Old Testament tithes. Tithes were not primarily gifts to God, but taxes for funding the national budget in Israel. Because Israel was a theocracy, the Levitical priests acted as the civil government. So, the Levite's tithe (Leviticus 27:30-33) was a precursor to today's income tax, as was a second annual tithe required by God to fund a national festival (Deuteronomy 14:22-29). Smaller taxes were also imposed on the people by the law (Leviticus 19:9-10; Exodus 23:10-11). So, the total giving required of the Israelites was not 10 percent, but well over 20 percent. All that money was used to operate the nation. All giving apart from that required to run the government was purely voluntary (cf. Exodus 25:2; 1 Chronicles 29:9). Each person gave whatever was in his heart to give; no percentage or amount was specified. New Testament believers are never commanded to tithe. Matthew 22:15-22 and Romans 13:1-7 tell us about the only required giving in the church age, which is the paying of taxes to the government. Interestingly enough, we in America presently pay between 20 and 30 percent of our income to the government--a figure very similar to the requirement under the theocracy of Israel. The guideline for our giving to God and His work is found in 2 Corinthians 9:6-7: "Now this I say, he who sows sparingly shall also reap sparingly; and he who sows bountifully shall also reap bountifully. Let each one do just as he has purposed in his heart; not grudgingly or under compulsion; for God loves a cheerful giver."

Tithing is under the Old Testament Law and Christians are not commanded or required to tithe, but we are to give freely and not forcibly. My point was that those of you who do tithe should be giving 23% of your total income and, if you aren't giving 23%, you are robbing God (Christ).

This parable of the shrewed manager is faulty!
This parable is found only in Luke Gospels, but not in Matthew's, Mark's and John's.
In Luke 1:1-3, Luke told us that he investigated Jesus, so as to write an account for the benefit of Theopolis.
So he scouted for information - eye-witness reports, and interviewed people who claimed knowledge.
Note that Luke arrived on the scene long after the actual eye-witnessess had died.
Clearly, someone narrated to Luke the parable of the shrewd manager, together with inaccuracies handed down from one to the next.
Now, pertaining to the doctrine "all scriptures are God inspired" (2Tim 3:16) - this is not true.
God's Scriptures are in the Bible, but not everything in the Bible is scripture.
The Holy Spirit will lead the disciples of Jesus, bringing them to the knowledge of truth.
So much for salvation through grace. Sproul said you can possibly not go to heaven if you don't tithe. See, 21:14 (time) on the recording. How about Deuteronomy 14:22-27. Moreover, Acts 15 does not lay this burden on the gentiles. The title was to support the temple and the levites who did not have an inheritance except from a percentage of the inheritance of the tribes. I was in a new church last month and the press for giving was made and I was ready to give until I found it was for t-shirts and mugs with church logos and for the up coming easter egg baskets and easter egg hunt. My wallet retreated. Sproul I am glad I stopped giving to your ministry many years ago when I understood what you taught. How about infant baptism? He also doubted his election in a video at the end of his life -- look it up. So much for the doctrine of election being believed by him.

It's funny how people will use RC's teachings for so many things; say that he is such a great theologian, yet the minute it effects their pocket book he is horribly wrong. You get a similar reaction when preaching on the fact that carnal christian's don't exist. Everyone loves Jesus until it's time to pay or you don't get to have your "guiltless sins." Funny how that works.
Dr. R.C. Sproul is not infallible. He's wrong about tithing. 2 Corinthians says Christians are to give freely, not forcibly. You need to read your Bible and obey God (Christ), not R.C. Sproul.

However, you seem to be putting the cart before the horse here as RC is espousing (biblically, might I add) that you must search yourself introspectively and consider the authentic state of your relationship with God if you’re genuinely unwilling to give up your means, lifestyle, or even your time to His service and the work of the Church - which is a principle part of His work. If you’re in a position to do so and contentedly refuse, then you better ask yourself what’s really going on in your heart; you’re actively withholding your worldly means from the work of the Church that we’re commanded to engage in with the great commission. Tithing was an Old Testament tax and like all civil and cerimonial laws were fullfilled by Christ, Sproul himself said (quoting Calvin) that no theologian is ever more than 75% right.
Yeah, it comes down to loving your money more than God. We don’t give to buy our way into heaven, we do it because it’s what our Father asked us to do. If you wouldn’t give your earthly father guff when he asked you to take out the trash or cut the grass, don’t question what Jesus told us we should be doing: feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, healing the sick, visiting the imprisoned and mending the broken. He told Peter, “feed my lambs”, he didn’t say, “if you have money left over after making the payment on your Mercedesand booking your cruise, maybe throw a $20 bill in the offering plate from your $2,000 paycheck. If you made $200 this week, that $20 is a lot of money. If you made $2,000 it’s like handing a penny to a starving widow…because that’s where the tithe ends up after keeping the lights on and the pipes from freezing. I’m an elder, and I have seen where our offerings go…the reality is that the bills of the congregation have to get paid, but the first 10% is for the Deacons to distribute as benevolences. If we have to dip into the memorial fund and purchase the Bob Johnson Memorial Tank of Heating Oil, that’s what we have to do…so if we’re not making our ends meet as a congregation because the congregation isn’t willing to support feeding the homeless, but pull up in a brand new car, the doors of the sanctuary will eventually close, and there’s no way around that. The mission dies when people choose not to fund it. I’ve had to attend the closing of a congregation, and it was attended by the children of the departed elders and deacons who grew up in the church, but DIDN’T ATTEND AS ADULTS! Why? Because football, relaxing days on the River, visiting with kinfolk and spending time in bed on Sunday morning came first, and worshipping God didn’t seem to matter. This is why my denomination (the RCA) is literally dying.
Great biblical teaching by the late Dr. R.C. Sproul. However, tithing is not for today. Malachi is referring to the Jews who were not tithing. The New Testament encourages Christians to give freely, not forcibly. Thanks for sharing.

Tithe, sabbath, (Saturday )hired labor preacher, (mercenary) are not for the doctrine to the church of the Our Lord Jesus Christ. Gospel is the feeling (love)of Jesus Christ to us, and it doesn't match with money.... We don't know for sure why, but always are of the hired hands preachers who love to preach ( oppress the church) about tithe. Lets preach only for love to love and lets do another things out of gospel to get salary.
Hahaha scared of Luke 16? It's about dumb pastors that scatter the lost sheep by teaching for doctrine the commandments of men. They are awakened by the holy Spirit and repent. Then they realize they only need to teach the 10 commandments, not the feasts that can only be done on the proper calendar in the land, and not Christmas and Easter and tithing and making graven images. Just the 10 commandments. I am an unjust Steward.
