The gender gap in reading

  • In most parts of the world, girls outperform boys in reading and one of the reasons is that girls have been found to have more natural aptitude and an interest in reading than boys. But assessments in sub-Saharan Africa have found that the trend is reversed in some countries in the region and factors such as inadequate school sanitation; domestic and care-giving responsibilities; and harassment and bullying at school contribute to the shifting trend. Dr Pearl Kyei is a lecturer in the Regional Institute for Population Studies at the University of Ghana, who conducted a study and examined data from 15 African countries in the continent.
