I'm from Friuli and when I visited my Sicilian friend in Palermo I had the biggest culture shocks of my life. Southern and even Central Italy really felt like a completely different country to me, even more than the Uk and Germany, where I lived for a while. For many things I felt way more at ease in Germany. Italy is definitely so diverse and interesting.

The thing about the grocery stores for me is funny. I am Italian and live in Belgium and when I am back to Italy I am amazed by the supermarkets and the quantity and variety (and quality I must say) of products compared to Belgium!

Hey Katie, It's funny how you're suprised by 5G. I live in Germany and I'm always surprised about how well the networks work in Italy. I've got pretty good reception even in small villages in Calabrian mountains. That's far superior to lots of places in Germany.Also 5G was more common there compared to Germany. Italy overtook many European countries in digitalisation, including Germany. I've read an article about it not too long ago. Also in terms of contactless paying, Italy is way ahead. I was about to move to Italy as well, before the Pandemic was hitting. I got Italian roots too, and also got family there. I'd really like to explore more of Italy in the future, and i think the proper way to do that, is by moving. Hi! Greetings from thr italian speaking Switzerland and congrats for your channel! The first thing I noticed when I went to the US the first time and that shocked me were all those people sleeping on the sidewalks. I remember almost stepping over an old couple (could have been my grand parents) that were sleeping hugged outside the subway. I felt so bad for them that this ruined my day in NYC. In San Francisco I really liked all the small talks with people I didn't know. It's not something I was used to in Switzerland. Another thing is the size of pretty much everything, from coffee, to stores, sidewalks and of course... to cars. I rented what for me was a huge SUV and was asked why I didn't want a "full size" SUV instead (like my car was a half sized one?). I loved it btw, it was bigger than my flat in Europe :)
I just came back waiting for my work visa, it is SO STRANGE COMING BACK. Wide roads and like you said sidewalks, completely agree on coffee (I only had a half of a small when I got back), polite driving, overhearing english everywhere is overwhelming, quick service at stores and government stuff, MINDBLOWING BEING BACK
Totally agree about the coffee. My husband and I finally made it to Italy last August and I absolutely loved the coffee culture. We had our first Italian coffees at a gas station! We were blown away that we could get espresso in real china cups at a gas station. We got back to the US and I immediately ordered a moka pot. I do have to add sugar to it though, even though I can drink american coffee black. I really miss Italy and hope to go back. Love your channel. I'm trying to learn Italian, but just don't know if I'll ever get it.
Yes, a bit of sugar with the Italian coffee is absolutely delightful :) And I love your observation about even the cups you can get your coffee in at a gas station (and the quality of the coffee)!! Italians take their coffee culture very seriously, indeed :) Have you tried gas station pizza yet? Again, it blows most pizza in the States outta the water!
Thanks Katie! Another reverse culture shock (from my son, a resident of Venezia for the past 2 years) - US has entire aisles in the grocery store dedicated to chips and cereals. He agrees with you about the ease of communication. Since he's lived on the island/lagoon of Venice, he also is getting re-used to cars everywhere.
Hello Katie! 5G network also exists in Italy. Arguably it's not everywhere, but it's getting there. It's just that probably your Italian subscription doesn't include it, because there are dedicated offers to have that.
Absolutely - Try Fastweb or Wind Tre. They have 5G in Trani. TIM and Vodafone don't seem to yet. Italy is pretty well covered by 5G and getting better by the week.
Love the video but i do have to disagree on 5g. Just came to Italy from the US after 6 months and I had your feeling but in reverse. US cellular service seemed to me so old and inefficient ,especially to the average cost of a us cellular membership account which can easily go beyond 50 to 60 dollars a month. And I wasn’t living in some lost small town in the Midwest but in SF, the so called tech Mecca. In comparison in Italy internet and 5G service even if not equallly distributed throughout the whole country is still very widely spread and much cheaper to access. For instance I just concluded a phone membership with the Italian national operator ( not exactly the cheapest option ) for 12 euros and that gives me 70 go by month. To have an equivalent offer with the same options in the us and a comparable quality of service, you’d probably need to spend at least 70 dollars.

Love this video. As someone now living in USA that has been to Italy (and Europe) many times, it really tickled me and made us laugh. Especially the BIG coffee take away cups (coffee in USA leaves much to be desired) and the HUGE supermarkets! OMG it's crazy how much we can consume in the USA.
Always interesting to see your videos and hear about your experiences. Especially about reversed culture shock. I am a German, that immigrated to the U.S.in the 80's. Since then I lived a total of 16 years in the US, the rest in Europe. Now I have spend the last 7 years in Spain (again) and I have a hard time seeing me going back to the U.S. Due to the huge culture shock/difference. Wonder how you or others may feel after having lived outside the US for many years.

I moved to Portugal this past Monday. I am feeling some of these points as the culture here is similar to Italy (e.g. running more than one errand in a day). I cannot wait to get over to southern Italy. Thank you for opening up a new part of Europe to me.

Having the narrow sidewalks makes you develop amazing skills when walking with the umbrella under the rain, i can dodge other people with umbrellas walking and without getting wet :) Also the moka you have is top notch. Bialetti is the best and i love how in time they expanded and they basically sell everything now not just mokas
5g is a thing almost everywhere, also in the small city i live! :) About supersize grocery stores, i should say that i rather go with quality instead of quantity... ;)
Love, love your videos Katie. Hoping to go back to Italy soon and actually stay in Trani as a base for exploring Puglia. Love Italy and Europe. Been many times. But many American supermarkets have very end fresh food. Also, frankly, as Kate says, it is simply less time consuming in US. Not only more efficient but also better sense of customer service. I’m obviously generalizing, but some Europeans don’t really get the politeness and need of helpful customer service. And I don’t travel typically to European touristy areas. Mostly find shops in European neighborhoods where there are mostly locals. Unfortunately in many of these non touristy European shops the spirt of kind and helpful customer service is lacking . And yes, I do always try and speak the local language; admittedly not very good….
You can go back to where you have been, not to whom you have been... If travelling or living abroad is not changing you a bit... You are doing wrong! Love your videos, keep them coming and have a wonderful year!
Wow…sono d’accordo! Although I speak Italian, my experience was in Austria..and I agree. We (Americans) don’t appreciate or fully comprehend how much space we have and waste. Huge and often under-utilized if not empty parking lots where there were trees and deer. Why do we develop such huge expanses. We need to learn to get along with less space..we could. Coffee…I love it..and more when it is real coffee. Our watered-down version is ok but less satisfying. Supermarkets where I get lost. English? You need more time. I got to the point that I did not need to pay attention in German and could easily slip back in the conversation. I do have to work at my Italian, especially watching movies etc. I do ok in one on one conversations. I miss certain foods, for sure. Yes, slow down and enjoy the activity! Ora ho nostalgia. I think once one leaves home and lives (not vacations) elsewhere, embracing the culture, one cannot ever really return home. My wife and I love Puglia! Siamo stati a Lecce due settimane! 4:40 I come from Bergamo, small town known for having two centers, even for us it's really common to have 5G, it's pretty much the one you find most easily together with the 4G+
We are Americans and this last year we purchased a home in Puglia. Your video was so accurate!!! We love it there and are grateful for having the privilege of experiencing the differences. However, my greatest disappointment was in what they call biscotti! Every time I sample one, it is like eating a softer sugar cookie. No detected almond flavor. I was given a recipe in the U.S. which is fabulous and it forced me to make my own in Italy when I'm there. I realize olive oil is used instead of butter, but so does my recipe, so that's not it. Any answers as to why the biscotti sucks???
Literally I don't understand anything of what you wrote. 🤣 Make an example about a biscotti you've eaten in Italy. Why do you expected the almond flavor be common? It is used in certain kind of "paste" but not much in biscotti. And no, olive oil is not used instead of butter. When we make cakes or biscotti we do user butter. I think you have or had the wrong expectations. By the way, biscotti doesn't sucks at all. 🤣

I moved back to the States after having lived in Europe for 20 years, 10 of which in Italy (and 5 of those in Puglia). It's incredible how hard it is to find some of the most common things at the supermarket in Europe. I wanted to make Tiramisu and I had to go to 5 different stores before I found the right ladyfingers! At least there are some nice Italian specialty stores around where I can get my fix, but it's still very challenging! Oh, and I totally gave up on espresso :( I've had a couple of OK ones here but most of them were pretty meh.
This is an important difference from a person who is native in english and all the other in the world: "extra thinking, extra part of my brain really working hard to comunicate". This is the normality for the other peoples: if you go outside of your country you know you have to use that extra part of your brain. This is my favourite part of comunication: I don't have a good pronunciation I'm not fluent or a good english but I love to use that part of my brain to comunicate with other peoples.
I’m late to this video (and the channel) but when we returned to the US after six years in Ireland my brain froze up in the local QFC. There was too much choice on things I didn’t care about, and too little on foods I like (for example, potatoes. If you liv3 in Ireland long enough you learn to love all the varieties of potatoes). It took me a few months before I adapted back.
Hi! 5g Is definitely a thing in big and medium cities (at least as far as the North of Italy is concerned), but I can understand your concerns..when I return in my town (15k inhabitants in the very North near Swiss, about 1,5 h from Milan) 5g is absolutely unknown..and if you step a little bit further between the mountains.. welcome 3g (if you're lucky to have network coverage😅). It depends on the size of the investment per population: phone companies often don't even buy network rights between mountains, except for the first former state-owned phone company -now on the free market-, if they don't have the return, so the more you move to smaller towns, the less network speed you will have 🙂
A couple of observations. First, there are about 100 5g sites here in Italy. Obviously, except for Roma, most are in the industrial north. I live in a small town in the Sibillini Park area. Any kind of reception is spotty, here, but that is the nature of living in the mountains. I had the same experience at the food museums that they call grocery stores in the US. I went to a Wegmanns in the Boston area and it was two mall floors. The area dedicated just to prepared foods was bigger then the largest ipermercati here in Italy. Those are the biggest grocery stores we have. I do miss the food variety in the US and the sense that old recipes are just a base for new experimentation. But, of course, the vegetables here in Italy are much fresher and tastier than those huge radiated things they call produce in the US.
Depends where you live in the US, my friend. The produce in California and Florida is as good as anywhere in the world. You can go to the thousands of farmers markets in those states and get produce that is fresher and tastier than anything you've ever tasted.
I haven’t been back to the US in over 3 and a half years. I’m hoping to go back before my 4 year mark but, I am so anxious about it! Enjoy your time there! Please eat some Panera Bread or Chick-fil-a for me! 😂
Thanks for sharing. In Italy, in order to access the 5G network almost all providers ask you to have a 5G-enabled data plan, which costs more than a 4G equivalent. The coverage is not so spread but main cities have it (eg. Bari in south). For coffee I suggest you to find a store of the Italian brand of which George Clooney was the testimonial. Their recent machines have the ability to make espresso or "lungo" by reading barcodes on the capsules.
5G, yes Genoa and glass-fiber in the apt. Vincotto seems to be a pugliese thing, thanks for the tipp, sounds really good! Post-office: I only go there by appointment. You'll get that online or by app. Maybe at your place too?
I'm a Brit in Spain and despite being an hour from Barcelona where they have 5G, I can still ride to places close to my village where there is zero coverage of any kind! Errands here too can take all day and being able to just tick one thing off the list is always a blessing. I haven't been to the UK for nearly 5 years now but I'm always paralyzed by the choice and availability in supermarkets when I visit. The downside being insufficient space in my luggage to take things back!
Hi Katie, yes there is 5G in Italy, with all the main carriers. You have to check with your operator (go in a shop) and ask to activate the option on your bundle, and you will have also 5G in Italy ;)

Using a Fiat in USA! Bravi ragazzi ahahah, yes 5G is up to now in the principals cities, for example for TIM (Roma, Milano, Torino and Napoli) but depends on network operator of course.
As an italian who lives in Milan, I think a similar cultural shocks could occur if you move from a small city in the South like Trani to a big more “modern” one like Milan. There’s a huge difference from a “metropoli” and a small city in the “provincia” I think everywhere in the world, more than two big cities of different countries, like, to say, Milan and Paris or London and Berlin
After living in Sicily for nearly 3 years our reverse culture shock was definitely a thing. We too were amazed at the choices in the grocery stores. How fast everything happened and drum roll Huge book stores. Great video.
OK Italy is famous for its infinite queue at public counters... BUT nowadays only elders just go there and stand in line, waiting hours for their turn to arrive. Every public exercize (such as Poste, banks, municipal offices) have their website or smartphone app where you can book an appointment at the date and time you prefer

There is nothing to show. The quality of food here is atrocious and primarily provided by corporate entities. The food is never fresh and ridden with unnatural ingredients and preservatives. After all, the the main goal here profit ($$$$$). Perishables aren't conducive to such lofty aspirations.
Yes, we have 5G in Milan and also WiFi6. 😊 Also, living in a small town in southern Italy you'll probably experience as big a culture shock if you visit Rome or Milan.

yes sidewalks are larger in new york than in trani. that's for sure. but large shops... or grocery stores... aren't something that i find particularly interesting. i prefer small shops. try finding quality stuff in large shops. the more you have of something the crappier it is. it's a general rule of life.
I live in a small italian town in the middle of the industrial triangle (TO-MI-GE) and having 4G on the cellphones is a "standard" with any cellphone operator. My husband's with Tim and he switches from 4 to 5 G sometimes during navigation. My home wii-fii was upgraded to 5G recently (charge free - the company decided to upgrade without extra charges) and I can't tell the difference. I guess it's becouse we don't do gaming on-line. There are a lot of people that are converting to optic fiber. The lines are very stable and in 1,5 year of schooling on line and 2 computers running contemporary we had overload issues with home line only 2 times, but then kids would use their cell phone as a hot-spot and never miss a lesson. So I had this line for the past 6 years, limitless navigation, now it's 5G at the mdic price of 30€ per month, so no way I'm changing it!
Yes... but all of these things, are true because you live in a little village like Trani. If you live in city like Milano, or also Bologna, Firenze... a lot of difference like those, doesn't exist. Probably if you lived in a town like Brunswick Georgia, you'll not find a groucery!

The last one really surprised me. As an Italian who has lived here and there, I get it, but it took me a while to realise it. It is actually true! As a Milanese I never considered that fare le commissioni, running errands, is so so difficult on an average in Italy. Good lord, I live and breath for my commissioni! (Btw, I have 5G, it popped up when I got a newer phone. It didn’t really change anything compared to previous 4G).
Concerning the 5G connection I does not agree 😂 I’ve emigrate to Canada and here it’s so expensive and the connection is far away to be so diffused as in Italy; what I understood is that this problem is similar to US. Things change in big cities, ok even in America you have good connection but when you exit from the big cities not, can you confirm? In Milan you have always good connection. I didn’t tested 5G widely in Milan but, as you said, here we have tight and narrow streets, 5G needs to see the antenna of you phone in order to work properly then in America should be better. PS-in the south of Italy you need to have the right provider, probably in Trani is Vodafone, but in Fasano (the town of my mother) is Tim
I’m attending university in Ferrara and the 5G coverage is fine. But in my tiny little hometown in the south of Italy (Otranto) It’s not a thing yet unfortunately :(

A bit strange I say this as an Italian from the city where you live. You are making a comparison between a HUGE American city, and a SMALL city in southern Italy. Trani has 54 thousand inhabitants. So is normal that burocracy slow, market are little etc.etc. The reverse shock then you would also have it between a huge American city, and a tiny city in the American province. What I mean is that it is normal that there is no 5G, or that the sidewalks are small. I was in a small town in the States and there were the same problems. Culture shock as a comparison should be made, for example, between MILAN and NEW YORK to make sense. nice video anyway.
We do already have 5g in Italy but the overall coverage is limited due to already assigned frequencies to the TV broadcasting services that are going to be released soon. The release deadline was postponed due to pandemic, it should be done within the 1Q of 2022, then some of the biggest mobile operators I'm pretty sure they are ready to turn on the full 5g service since months.
I live in Cagliari (Sardinia) and we have 5g here 😊 also, it’s true that an oz of espresso contains more caffeine than an oz of your coffee but an american coffee is made of several oz where an espresso is a little more than one oz (30/40 ml), so you end up drinking a lot more caffeine drinking american coffee 😂
After a year linving there you didn't realize that you are in a small town of south Italy and not all Italy is as you describe. If you try to live in centrals US states compared to N.Y.C or L.A. the result could be the same.

Geographical position impact human comunities in different ways and conditions their development, just like other factors, but we rarely consider some.
The thing about the grocery stores for me is funny. I am Italian and live in Belgium and when I am back to Italy I am amazed by the supermarkets and the quantity and variety (and quality I must say) of products compared to Belgium!

Hey Katie, It's funny how you're suprised by 5G. I live in Germany and I'm always surprised about how well the networks work in Italy. I've got pretty good reception even in small villages in Calabrian mountains. That's far superior to lots of places in Germany.Also 5G was more common there compared to Germany. Italy overtook many European countries in digitalisation, including Germany. I've read an article about it not too long ago. Also in terms of contactless paying, Italy is way ahead. I was about to move to Italy as well, before the Pandemic was hitting. I got Italian roots too, and also got family there. I'd really like to explore more of Italy in the future, and i think the proper way to do that, is by moving.
Anyway, keep up the good work with your channel, you really have the passion for it 😀

Hi! Greetings from thr italian speaking Switzerland and congrats for your channel! The first thing I noticed when I went to the US the first time and that shocked me were all those people sleeping on the sidewalks. I remember almost stepping over an old couple (could have been my grand parents) that were sleeping hugged outside the subway. I felt so bad for them that this ruined my day in NYC. In San Francisco I really liked all the small talks with people I didn't know. It's not something I was used to in Switzerland. Another thing is the size of pretty much everything, from coffee, to stores, sidewalks and of course... to cars. I rented what for me was a huge SUV and was asked why I didn't want a "full size" SUV instead (like my car was a half sized one?). I loved it btw, it was bigger than my flat in Europe :)
I just came back waiting for my work visa, it is SO STRANGE COMING BACK. Wide roads and like you said sidewalks, completely agree on coffee (I only had a half of a small when I got back), polite driving, overhearing english everywhere is overwhelming, quick service at stores and government stuff, MINDBLOWING BEING BACK

Totally agree about the coffee. My husband and I finally made it to Italy last August and I absolutely loved the coffee culture. We had our first Italian coffees at a gas station! We were blown away that we could get espresso in real china cups at a gas station. We got back to the US and I immediately ordered a moka pot. I do have to add sugar to it though, even though I can drink american coffee black. I really miss Italy and hope to go back. Love your channel. I'm trying to learn Italian, but just don't know if I'll ever get it.

Thanks Katie! Another reverse culture shock (from my son, a resident of Venezia for the past 2 years) - US has entire aisles in the grocery store dedicated to chips and cereals. He agrees with you about the ease of communication. Since he's lived on the island/lagoon of Venice, he also is getting re-used to cars everywhere.

Hello Katie! 5G network also exists in Italy. Arguably it's not everywhere, but it's getting there. It's just that probably your Italian subscription doesn't include it, because there are dedicated offers to have that.
Absolutely - Try Fastweb or Wind Tre. They have 5G in Trani. TIM and Vodafone don't seem to yet.
Italy is pretty well covered by 5G and getting better by the week.
Love the video but i do have to disagree on 5g. Just came to Italy from the US after 6 months and I had your feeling but in reverse. US cellular service seemed to me so old and inefficient ,especially to the average cost of a us cellular membership account which can easily go beyond 50 to 60 dollars a month. And I wasn’t living in some lost small town in the Midwest but in SF, the so called tech Mecca. In comparison in Italy internet and 5G service even if not equallly distributed throughout the whole country is still very widely spread and much cheaper to access. For instance I just concluded a phone membership with the Italian national operator ( not exactly the cheapest option ) for 12 euros and that gives me 70 go by month. To have an equivalent offer with the same options in the us and a comparable quality of service, you’d probably need to spend at least 70 dollars.
It probably depends more on the phone company than anything else.

Love this video. As someone now living in USA that has been to Italy (and Europe) many times, it really tickled me and made us laugh. Especially the BIG coffee take away cups (coffee in USA leaves much to be desired) and the HUGE supermarkets! OMG it's crazy how much we can consume in the USA.

Always interesting to see your videos and hear about your experiences. Especially about reversed culture shock. I am a German, that immigrated to the U.S.in the 80's. Since then I lived a total of 16 years in the US, the rest in Europe. Now I have spend the last 7 years in Spain (again) and I have a hard time seeing me going back to the U.S. Due to the huge culture shock/difference. Wonder how you or others may feel after having lived outside the US for many years.

I moved to Portugal this past Monday. I am feeling some of these points as the culture here is similar to Italy (e.g. running more than one errand in a day). I cannot wait to get over to southern Italy. Thank you for opening up a new part of Europe to me.

Having the narrow sidewalks makes you develop amazing skills when walking with the umbrella under the rain, i can dodge other people with umbrellas walking and without getting wet :) Also the moka you have is top notch. Bialetti is the best and i love how in time they expanded and they basically sell everything now not just mokas
5g is a thing almost everywhere, also in the small city i live! :) About supersize grocery stores, i should say that i rather go with quality instead of quantity... ;)

Love Italy and Europe. Been many times. But many American supermarkets have very end fresh food. Also, frankly, as Kate says, it is simply less time consuming in US. Not only more efficient but also better sense of customer service. I’m obviously generalizing, but some Europeans don’t really get the politeness and need of helpful customer service. And I don’t travel typically to European touristy areas. Mostly find shops in European neighborhoods where there are mostly locals. Unfortunately in many of these non touristy European shops the spirt of kind and helpful customer service is lacking . And yes, I do always try and speak the local language; admittedly not very good….
You can go back to where you have been, not to whom you have been...
If travelling or living abroad is not changing you a bit... You are doing wrong!

5G is common in big cities and especially in the north. Here in Milan and surroundings is quite normal now, even if it's still a new technology.

Wow…sono d’accordo! Although I speak Italian, my experience was in Austria..and I agree. We (Americans) don’t appreciate or fully comprehend how much space we have and waste. Huge and often under-utilized if not empty parking lots where there were trees and deer. Why do we develop such huge expanses. We need to learn to get along with less space..we could. Coffee…I love it..and more when it is real coffee. Our watered-down version is ok but less satisfying. Supermarkets where I get lost. English? You need more time. I got to the point that I did not need to pay attention in German and could easily slip back in the conversation. I do have to work at my Italian, especially watching movies etc. I do ok in one on one conversations. I miss certain foods, for sure. Yes, slow down and enjoy the activity! Ora ho nostalgia. I think once one leaves home and lives (not vacations) elsewhere, embracing the culture, one cannot ever really return home. My wife and I love Puglia! Siamo stati a Lecce due settimane! We are Americans and this last year we purchased a home in Puglia. Your video was so accurate!!! We love it there and are grateful for having the privilege of experiencing the differences. However, my greatest disappointment was in what they call biscotti! Every time I sample one, it is like eating a softer sugar cookie. No detected almond flavor. I was given a recipe in the U.S. which is fabulous and it forced me to make my own in Italy when I'm there. I realize olive oil is used instead of butter, but so does my recipe, so that's not it. Any answers as to why the biscotti sucks???

It is used in certain kind of "paste" but not much in biscotti.

I moved back to the States after having lived in Europe for 20 years, 10 of which in Italy (and 5 of those in Puglia). It's incredible how hard it is to find some of the most common things at the supermarket in Europe. I wanted to make Tiramisu and I had to go to 5 different stores before I found the right ladyfingers! At least there are some nice Italian specialty stores around where I can get my fix, but it's still very challenging! Oh, and I totally gave up on espresso :( I've had a couple of OK ones here but most of them were pretty meh.

This is an important difference from a person who is native in english and all the other in the world: "extra thinking, extra part of my brain really working hard to comunicate". This is the normality for the other peoples: if you go outside of your country you know you have to use that extra part of your brain. This is my favourite part of comunication: I don't have a good pronunciation I'm not fluent or a good english but I love to use that part of my brain to comunicate with other peoples.

I’m late to this video (and the channel) but when we returned to the US after six years in Ireland my brain froze up in the local QFC. There was too much choice on things I didn’t care about, and too little on foods I like (for example, potatoes. If you liv3 in Ireland long enough you learn to love all the varieties of potatoes). It took me a few months before I adapted back.

Hi! 5g Is definitely a thing in big and medium cities (at least as far as the North of Italy is concerned), but I can understand your concerns..when I return in my town (15k inhabitants in the very North near Swiss, about 1,5 h from Milan) 5g is absolutely unknown..and if you step a little bit further between the mountains.. welcome 3g (if you're lucky to have network coverage😅). It depends on the size of the investment per population: phone companies often don't even buy network rights between mountains, except for the first former state-owned phone company -now on the free market-, if they don't have the return, so the more you move to smaller towns, the less network speed you will have 🙂
You can Google Italy 5g coverage map. Looks like different per carrier. I saw some dots in bari but not sure about trani. Great video as always
A couple of observations. First, there are about 100 5g sites here in Italy. Obviously, except for Roma, most are in the industrial north.
I live in a small town in the Sibillini Park area. Any kind of reception is spotty, here, but that is the nature of living in the mountains.
I had the same experience at the food museums that they call grocery stores in the US. I went to a Wegmanns in the Boston area and it was two mall floors. The area dedicated just to prepared foods was bigger then the largest ipermercati here in Italy. Those are the biggest grocery stores we have.
I do miss the food variety in the US and the sense that old recipes are just a base for new experimentation. But, of course, the vegetables here in Italy are much fresher and tastier than those huge radiated things they call produce in the US.
Depends where you live in the US, my friend. The produce in California and Florida is as good as anywhere in the world. You can go to the thousands of farmers markets in those states and get produce that is fresher and tastier than anything you've ever tasted.

Thanks for sharing. In Italy, in order to access the 5G network almost all providers ask you to have a 5G-enabled data plan, which costs more than a 4G equivalent. The coverage is not so spread but main cities have it (eg. Bari in south). For coffee I suggest you to find a store of the Italian brand of which George Clooney was the testimonial. Their recent machines have the ability to make espresso or "lungo" by reading barcodes on the capsules.

In italy 4G is basically everywhere but 5G is available for the moment in the biggest cities

I'm a Brit in Spain and despite being an hour from Barcelona where they have 5G, I can still ride to places close to my village where there is zero coverage of any kind! Errands here too can take all day and being able to just tick one thing off the list is always a blessing. I haven't been to the UK for nearly 5 years now but I'm always paralyzed by the choice and availability in supermarkets when I visit. The downside being insufficient space in my luggage to take things back!
Hi Katie, yes there is 5G in Italy, with all the main carriers. You have to check with your operator (go in a shop) and ask to activate the option on your bundle, and you will have also 5G in Italy ;)

As an italian who lives in Milan, I think a similar cultural shocks could occur if you move from a small city in the South like Trani to a big more “modern” one like Milan. There’s a huge difference from a “metropoli” and a small city in the “provincia” I think everywhere in the world, more than two big cities of different countries, like, to say, Milan and Paris or London and Berlin
I need to move there. I’m not made for hustle culture and excess so I feel like Italy would be perfect for my lifestyle.
After living in Sicily for nearly 3 years our reverse culture shock was definitely a thing. We too were amazed at the choices in the grocery stores. How fast everything happened and drum roll Huge book stores. Great video.

OK Italy is famous for its infinite queue at public counters... BUT nowadays only elders just go there and stand in line, waiting hours for their turn to arrive. Every public exercize (such as Poste, banks, municipal offices) have their website or smartphone app where you can book an appointment at the date and time you prefer

There is nothing to show. The quality of food here is atrocious and primarily provided by corporate entities. The food is never fresh and ridden with unnatural ingredients and preservatives. After all, the the main goal here profit ($$$$$). Perishables aren't conducive to such lofty aspirations.
And by the way, freshly baked daily bread and pastries? Forget it! Frozen or prepackaged is all you can hope for!

yes sidewalks are larger in new york than in trani. that's for sure. but large shops... or grocery stores... aren't something that i find particularly interesting. i prefer small shops. try finding quality stuff in large shops. the more you have of something the crappier it is. it's a general rule of life.
I live in a small italian town in the middle of the industrial triangle (TO-MI-GE) and having 4G on the cellphones is a "standard" with any cellphone operator. My husband's with Tim and he switches from 4 to 5 G sometimes during navigation. My home wii-fii was upgraded to 5G recently (charge free - the company decided to upgrade without extra charges) and I can't tell the difference. I guess it's becouse we don't do gaming on-line. There are a lot of people that are converting to optic fiber. The lines are very stable and in 1,5 year of schooling on line and 2 computers running contemporary we had overload issues with home line only 2 times, but then kids would use their cell phone as a hot-spot and never miss a lesson. So I had this line for the past 6 years, limitless navigation, now it's 5G at the mdic price of 30€ per month, so no way I'm changing it!
Yes... but all of these things, are true because you live in a little village like Trani. If you live in city like Milano, or also Bologna, Firenze... a lot of difference like those, doesn't exist. Probably if you lived in a town like Brunswick Georgia, you'll not find a groucery!

The last one really surprised me. As an Italian who has lived here and there, I get it, but it took me a while to realise it. It is actually true! As a Milanese I never considered that fare le commissioni, running errands, is so so difficult on an average in Italy. Good lord, I live and breath for my commissioni! (Btw, I have 5G, it popped up when I got a newer phone. It didn’t really change anything compared to previous 4G).
Concerning the 5G connection I does not agree 😂 I’ve emigrate to Canada and here it’s so expensive and the connection is far away to be so diffused as in Italy; what I understood is that this problem is similar to US. Things change in big cities, ok even in America you have good connection but when you exit from the big cities not, can you confirm? In Milan you have always good connection. I didn’t tested 5G widely in Milan but, as you said, here we have tight and narrow streets, 5G needs to see the antenna of you phone in order to work properly then in America should be better. PS-in the south of Italy you need to have the right provider, probably in Trani is Vodafone, but in Fasano (the town of my mother) is Tim
a cell 5g coverage i very small so you likely have it in big cities (also in US) so I am ot sure you will have it, even at the end of the subway
I’m attending university in Ferrara and the 5G coverage is fine. But in my tiny little hometown in the south of Italy (Otranto) It’s not a thing yet unfortunately :(

A bit strange I say this as an Italian from the city where you live.
You are making a comparison between a HUGE American city, and a SMALL city in southern Italy.
Trani has 54 thousand inhabitants. So is normal that burocracy slow, market are little etc.etc.
The reverse shock then you would also have it between a huge American city, and a tiny city in the American province.
What I mean is that it is normal that there is no 5G, or that the sidewalks are small.
I was in a small town in the States and there were the same problems.
Culture shock as a comparison should be made, for example, between MILAN and NEW YORK to make sense. nice video anyway.
We do already have 5g in Italy but the overall coverage is limited due to already assigned frequencies to the TV broadcasting services that are going to be released soon. The release deadline was postponed due to pandemic, it should be done within the 1Q of 2022, then some of the biggest mobile operators I'm pretty sure they are ready to turn on the full 5g service since months.
I live in Cagliari (Sardinia) and we have 5g here 😊 also, it’s true that an oz of espresso contains more caffeine than an oz of your coffee but an american coffee is made of several oz where an espresso is a little more than one oz (30/40 ml), so you end up drinking a lot more caffeine drinking american coffee 😂

After a year linving there you didn't realize that you are in a small town of south Italy and not all Italy is as you describe. If you try to live in centrals US states compared to N.Y.C or L.A. the result could be the same.
Funny, i just got here after watching a video from "Not just bikes" chanel, a video about car centric cities, and among other bad things was the lack of sidewalks or sidewalks ending whit the sign "End of Sidewalk" .SO i am confused, you guys have sidewalks or not? xd
